It's officially that time again: The spreadsheets are out and the ranking formulas are loaded. Chris Chavez and Preet Majithia have returned with the kind of number crunching that would make a tax accountant blush.Yes — we're talking about The Ten, and more broadly, the increasingly anxiety-inducing state of the 10,000 meters heading into the 2025 World Championships in Tokyo.Because apparently World Athletics took one look at the event and said, ‘What if we made this harder, more confusing, and fully dependent on vibes, shoe tech, and whether your country's federation knows how to read the rankings page?'So here we are. The women's standard dropped to a vicious 30:20.00. The men's remains at a world-class 27:00.00. And unless you're from Kenya or Ethiopia—or somehow running 10Ks on the road in super shoes fast enough to melt tarmac—you're probably counting on the whims of the World Rankings gods to punch your ticket to Tokyo. In the U.S., Weini Kelati is still the queen of consistency. Parker Valby and Karissa Schweizer skipped The Ten entirely. Elise Cranny has re-entered the picture and Jessica McClain quietly garnered some valuable points by PR'ing by half a minute. On the men's side, it's a little simpler: Grant Fisher, Nico Young, Graham Blanks, and Woody Kincaid are qualified. All they have to do is battle at USAs.There's still time. A 10K at Mt. SAC is coming. Maybe Pre will host a last-minute 10K. So let's break down who's up, who's down, who's close and who's hoping UK Athletics doesn't screw them over again.Hosts: Chris Chavez | @chris_j_chavez on Instagram + Preet Majithia | @preetmajithia on InstagramSUPPORT OUR SPONSORSKETONE-IQ: Level up your training with Ketone-IQ – a clean shot of energy with no sugar or caffeine.
"Last year, I can't even begin to tell you where my head was at. I was dealing with a lot. My dad had passed away. My girlfriend had just broken up with me. We found out that we were making this move to Eugene...Finally, this year – I'm in a new situation. The training is going super well. I feel my engine is stronger than ever. This is a good time. What do I think I can do? I think the pipedream is that I can win the whole thing. But that's not how I'm going to go in. I'm going to go in to compete, take every wave and hit every move." My guest for today's episode is Woody Kincaid. The former CITIUS MAG Podcaster is back after winning the U.S. 10,000 meter title for the second time in three years. He won in 28:23.01 – which was highlighted by a 54.76s for the final lap and a 26.43 for the last 200m. He finished 9th in the 5000m, which he will lend further context to. This is the first time that he joins the show since switching coaches from Jerry Schumacher and the Bowerman Track Club last year to Mike Smith. The training group that includes World Championship 4th place finisher Luis Grijalva, as well as the newly-minted U.S. 5000m champion Abdihamid Nur and 1500m champion Nikki Hiltz, has started to go by Death Row Records. Kincaid has been on fire. During the indoor season, he broke Grant Fisher's U.S. indoor 5000m record with a 12:51.61. He also ran 27:06.37 for the 10,000m in March. He also ran 12:54.40 while unleashing an epic 54-second final kick to move from 15th to 6th on the final lap. He's got big aspirations for the world championships, where he will focus all of his efforts on the 10,000 meters. The podcast I've been wanting to make happen for months: The Woody Kincaid Special. Woody Kincaid is a passionate competitor who has accomplished many incredible things in his career. The first time I remember hearing Woody's name was on September 10, 2019, when he became the eighth man in American history to break 13 minutes in the 5k by clocking 12:58.10. Since that day on a brisk and rainy evening in Portland, Oregon, Woody has gone on to etch his name further into the history books. As his Instagram boi alludes, he has literally won the U.S. Trials 10k. He also made the U.S. World Championship team last year in the 5k. Woody ran a new American Record time of 12:51.61 in the 5k this past January, signaling to the world that he's not messing around in 2023. In the words of Woody from this conversation, "The job is never done." This conversation with Woody was wide-ranging and full of serious topics, such as the lessons he's learned from being in this sport to more comical subjects like putting too much pepper on a Banh Mi sandwich for Gordon Ramsay. We dive into his upbringing in the sport, the 12:58 race, and the special camp that led into it, winning the U.S. Olympic Trials, dealing with negativity and outside noise, what he thinks he can accomplish before he hangs up the spikes, and more. Woody is a very perspicacious speaker who is incredibly thoughtful about his responses. This trait made this conversation particularly fascinating and impactful. I'm confident you'll walk away from this conversation a better version of yourself and a bigger fan of Woody Kincaid. You can listen wherever you find your podcasts by searching, "The Running Effect Podcast." Alicia Monson crushed the American 10,000m record but was beaten by Eilish McColgan, but we start with 30 minutes on the men's race and Joe Klecker vs Woody Kincaid and the thread: Klecker FURIOUS with Kincaid. Is there a controversy? Is a race more than about winning? Then we turn to the Tokyo Marathon and Cam Levin's (2:05:36) Canadian and North American record, plus the depth of the Japanese, and Betsy Saina of the US becoming the 8th fastest American ever with her 2:21:40. We then preview the NCAA meet where the Washington men will be going for history in the mile, 800 U20 phenoms (Will Sumner, Roisin Willis, Michaela Rose, and Juliette Whittaker) could make history and we fully expect Katelyn Tuohy to leave with 2 more NCAA titles. Then, we end with Euro indoors. Is Jakob Ingebrigtsen just good or arrogant? What a weekend. Yared Nuguse started it off by running 7:28.24, an American record for 3000m and then a few hours later Woody Kincaid shocked the nation and Joe Klecker by running 12:51.61, an American record at 5000m. The next day Katelyn Tuohy broke the NCAA record in the mile. Plus a sneaky good performance by Hobbs Kessler, a win and interesting comments from Drew Hunter, a world best by Keely Hodgkinson, Mo Farah news, a nice win by Ajee' Wilson, and another great meet this weekend in Boston. Carrie chats with Olympian Woody Kincaid! They talk about his entry into the sport, running while his dad battles lung cancer, dealing with nerves and stress, his thoughts on Shelby Houlihan and her battle with doping allegations, why he needed to make the Olympics to get his contract resigned, and so much more!
This week's guest is Woody Kincaid of Bowerman Track Club, a Colorado native and University of Portland grad who recently qualified for his first Olympic games in the 5k and 10k. Longtime listeners will remember that we first had Woody on the podcast in 2018, when he was coming off a string of injuries that derailed his early pro career, and it was a great full-circle moment to have him come on again at the top of his game and to reflect on how far he's come Woody is a great friend of host David Melly and we got right into it, so get ready for an all-timer episode. We covered a wide range of subjects from “self-inflicted wounds,” to his relationship with his coaches, to why he threw up before the 10k at Trials, and everything in between. Enjoy the episode and don't forget to catch Woody representing Team USA in Tokyo in a few weeks. Don't forget to subscribe, like, follow, review, and everything else! On believing he can make the Olympics through setbacks: “I do have this weird confidence in my own abilities. I have a pretty pessimistic outlook toward other things in the world, but I have a very strong self-belief. I'm not one of those guys that's like, ‘anything is possible,' but I know that if I focus I can do pretty much anything I set my mind to. I've had moments where I'm like, ‘I don't know if this is going to work out,' but those are, for me, generally pretty passing.” On his relationship with University of Portland coach Rob Conner: “RC was always a very hands-off coach. His philosophy was, ‘you can take a horse to water but you can't make him drink' and he was always taking me to water and I just… would not drink. But I think he's very proud now and he's happy to see the potential that he'd always seen on the big stage.” On his relationship with Bowerman Track Club coach Jerry Schumacher: “Jerry and I are the same person with two very different philosophies of life. Personality-wise, we're very similar, stubborn kind of people, but we disagree on a lot. We always fight, but we understand each other.” On participating in track and field media: “I'll go on podcasts because I have a respect for recording in the moment, but it's not wise… it's not smart. If I were smart, I wouldn't have a Twitter as a professional athlete, because it doesn't do me good. [….] At the same time, everybody has a [platform] now, and one of the good things about that is that people are more sympathetic to people just being themselves. I'm not worried about what people are going to think at this point – I've been out there for a while.” On dealing with speculation and criticism: “I'm most defensive when people discredit everything I do. I've always been that way. It can be anything… doping allegations or anything else. When I ran 12:58, it was like, ‘well, it's just the shoes, it's the environment.' And Centro made a good point – he said: that just means you made it. And I really took that to heart. When people are so mad at me, it just kinda means that now I'm on the radar.”
We get 2x Olympian, 12:58 5k, 27:12 10k, and Bowerman Track Club athlete Woody Kincaid on the podcast to talk about what it's like being on Bowerman TC, what it took to make the team in the 5k and 10k, and his mindset throughout the years. A lot of wisdom on this podcast. Hit the number with any question: (646)-780-9218 AVAILABLE ON ITUNES Running Things Considered is back for a new season in a new decade with new hosts! Taking over are two professional runners. Zane Coburn, a genuinely funny dude who has years of running experience at almost every level, and Avery Bartlett, an ACC champion with an uncomfortable amount of Tik Tok fame. They are bringing weekly podcasts answering your questions submitted by calling 646-780-9218 and leaving a voicemail. Nothing is off-limits, ask what you want to hear, and get ready to dive into the lives of two of the biggest personalities in the running community.
Woody Kincaid reflects on the 2021 US Olympics Trials, where he won the national title in the 10000m and placed third in the 5000m to punch his ticket to the 2021 Tokyo Olympics in both events. Woody dives into his training, his career, and goals for the Tokyo Olympics. For the final episode of Trials Talk with Chris and Kyle, we dissect the wildest hour of track and field on U.S. soil in a while. In the men's 5,000m, Paul Chelimo toyed with the field and won a scorcher of a race in 13:26 ahead of Woody Kincaid and Grant FIsher. We had a bit of a weather delay where the meet was postponed due to extreme and record-setting heat. We had a world record in the women's 400m hurdles where Sydney McLaughlin took .26 seconds off Dalilah Muhammad's previous mark. Athing Mu did her thing with the second-fastest U.S. women's 800m mark of all-time to win the women's 800m over a loaded field. Ajee Wilson and Raevyn Rogers snuck in behind her for the other two spots to Tokyo. As if anything could follow those up, we saw one of the best 1,500 meter duels in recent history with Cole Hocker defeating the reigning Olympic champion Matthew Centrowitz. Noah Lyles closed out the show with a world-leading time in the men's 200m of 19.74. TUNE IN AND LISTEN TO TRIALS TALK WITH CHRIS AND KYLE. Recap of the two 10,000-meter races that were held as part of The TEN track meet tonight at JSerra High School in San Juan Capistrano, California. For those that finished the race, the times were VERY fast. The Bowerman Track Club had a good day as BTC athletes won both races and had four athletes in each race pick up the Olympic standard. #EliseCranny #MarcScott #TheTEN Lap by lap splits: https://finishedresults.trackscoreboa... Full video replay: https://youtu.be/AIDs4qxVivI The Bowerman Track Club’s Elise Cranny used a 65.11 final lap to kick by teammate Karissa Schweizer to win The TEN tonight in 30:47.42 to Cranny’s 30:47.99 as the two women became the sixth and seventh US runners in history to dip under the 31:00 barrier for 10,000 meters. They are now the third- and fourth-fastest women in US history. The Bowerman Track Club’s Marc Scott’s hot start to 2021 continued tonight as he ran 27:10.41 to win the men’s 10,000 and move to #2 all-time on the British 10,000 list. Scott wasn’t the only man leaving the race happy as the point of the race was to get the Olympic standard of 27:28.00 and all five men that finished the race were well under the standard. In his 10,000 debut, Grant Fisher ran 27:11.29 for 2nd, meaning he’s now the 5th-fastest American in history. 12:58 man Woody Kincaid was third in 27:12.78 as Bowerman Track Club athletes swept the top 3 places. https://www.letsrun.com/news/2021/02/... Big question: Who will hit the Olympic 10,000m standard? This is what it’s all about. This meet, organized by Sound Running, consists of just two races, both featuring small elite fields targeting the Olympic standards of 27:28.00 (men) and 31:25.00 (women). Currently, just three American men (Lopez Lomong, Eric Jenkins, and Shadrack Kipchirchir) and nine American women have the standard. And while it is possible to qualify for the Olympics based off your world ranking, your position is a heck of a lot safer with the standard in your back pocket. https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCFe2... In the second banter episode of the month, we find out how much Eli can talk when he has spent the previous week not podcasting and instead storing up hot takes during three days alone in the car. (Tony meanwhile, spent his bye week more productively, getting fit enough to successfully take on the Murph immediately after recording this episode.)Eli starts out innocently enough, desperately backpedaling on his call-out of Woody Kincaid in the last banter episode, but he just can't help himself and dishes out a new hot take sure to inflame Strava users (and fans of the Strava Wankers Twitter account specifically). Tony and Eli then wade into more serious territory, discussing ethics, diversity, and inclusion in running and for RDs as relates to the Marathon Investigation article about trail race RD Sean "Run Bum" Blanton retroactively DQing competitors for seemingly arbitrary violations, and also his well-documented inappropriate behaviors toward women in the running community. This transitions into a brief discussion of Ahmaud Arbery, where Eli and Tony are admittedly so far out of their depths that for once, rather than run their mouths, they want to amplify diverse voices and encourage you to read these articles by folks who are more knowledgable:Ahmaud Arbery and Whiteness in the Running World (Outside.com)Jogging Has Always Excluded Black People (NY Times)Ahmaud Arbery and the dangers of running while black (Vox)After a Killing, 'Running While Black' Stirs Even More Anxiety (NY Times) While the co-hosts know they don't have all the solutions, they agree that as an industry we need to keep working to be more inclusive in various ways (expect episodes on this topic featuring folks more qualified to speak on it in the not-too-distant future). This episode's coronavirus topic is Finish Area, where Tony drives the discussion which is focused on what is essential, what elements may need to be rolled back in the coronavirus world, and what opportunities exist to reimagine certain festival elements or even improve them by using virtual or at-home tools. He also wonders aloud about whether we overextended ourselves from a budgetary or expectations standpoint in the Finish Area in the pre-coronavirus era, and you also learn why if he ever refuses to shake your hand you shouldn't be offended. The episode ends with Eli sharing some big personal news. Want to find out what it is? Listen to Woody the (5th fastest 5k Runner in U.S. History) Kincaid. Learn about how Bowerman is approaching training at this time, Woody's breakthroughs in the sport, and much more.
May's first banter episode kicks off with a "State of the Pod" update to let our multitudinous listeners know what to expect for the ECT Pod release schedule from here on in (three episodes a month, usually two banter episodes sandwiched around one interview, released in the early morning on Thursday). That seemingly benign discussion then takes an unexpected turn where we learn that Tony's family is much more supportive of the pod (and nicer) than Eli's.The coronavirus topic for this episode is Start Area Operations, which is right in Tony's wheelhouse. He walks us through the "runner journey" to, at, and out of the Start Area and how coronavirus could affect every aspect of that. This segment was supposed to be capped at 10 minutes, but Tony was dropping so much knowledge we had to add a 5-minute "bonus round" so he could tell us more about coronavirus's potential affects on athlete staging and start sequences (extended multi-heat start windows, anyone?) and also about runner psyche and races' communication with runners about new processes once we do return.Your co-hosts then fearlessly tread on what is likely to be thin ice, discussing whether PRs set on Strava count (conclusion: No! But also kind of maybe yes, under certain circumstances?). Tony calls out Strava Wankers including one who plays in the English Premier League and Eli sites disputed times near the top of the famous Mt. Tam Hill Climb segment*** to show how GPS inaccuracy can have major impacts on Strava results in a way that it can't in certified and sanctioned road races. Eli then issues his hot take that not even all times set in a race are equally valid and is unnecessarily mean to pro runner Woody Kincaid (who is 1000 times the runner that Eli will ever be) in the process. There's a pretty large chance that Eli will be revisiting this topic with his head hung in shame in future episodes, so stay tuned!***Note from Eli: If you click one link in these show notes, click this one. And then consider supporting its publisher Lope Magazine, which provides great and unique longform storytelling about running. If you enjoyed this episode, please rate and review us on Apple podcasts, Spotify, or wherever you get your podcasts, and don't forget to subscribe. In the intro, we start with discussions of Woody Kincaid's top-5 US all-time 5K this past Tuesday on the Michael Johnson Track as well a new half marathon world record from Geoffrey Kamworor. Both very impressive. Then at 10:20 in, I bring in Brent Stein (from episode 126) to talk about the "what if's" of training. What if you have a bad workout? What if you miss a workout or run? What if you go on vacation? What if you get sick? What if you are managing an injury? For each, we talk about how to think about it within the moment and then how to bounce back from it so that you stay on track in training. There is no such thing as a perfect training cycle so in this episode we give you the tools to turn imperfect training into a big result on race day.
The Woodman cometh back on the podcast, This week, Woody Kincaid became the 5th fastest American of all-time and the eighth man to run under 13-minutes when he won the Portland 5,000 in 12:58.10 at the Michael Johnson track on Nike's campus. Lopez Lomong and Matt Centrowtz finished behind him and both notched the 2020 Olympic standard. On this episode, Woody breaks down in full detail every aspect of that race. How he rebounded from injury in the past 18 months. How much did the atmosphere factor into the performance? Should Matt Centrowitz stay at the 1,500? What's it like being undefeated and now faster than Galen Rupp? Is the beef with Paul Chelimo squashed? And much more... ❤️ Support for this episode of the CITIUS MAG Podcast comes from THE FEED. In episode 133 we have a great show for you. Did you watch the USATF's? Did you see the men's 5k? I thought it was absolutely one of the most entertaining 5k races I have ever seen. Over the course of that race I went from thinking what is Woody Kincaid doing up there, to thinking Woody Kincaid is done to saying wow, what a gutsy race by Kincaid. I became a fan. We talked to Woody about the race, what he was thinking and how he feels about being top 3 but not getting a spot on the World's team. This week's guest is Woody Kincaid, a Colorado native and graduate of the University of Portland who competes for Bowerman Track Club. Woody is a talented and accomplished runner who's run 13:12 for 5000m, and he also happens to be a talented an accomplished podcaster. He hosts Price of a Mile, a podcast on the Citius Mag network where he interviews his BTC teammates. We recorded with Woody and co-host Ben Weingart in Portland after Portland Track Festival, and he was a fantastic guest. We talked about what it was like to grow up the child of flight attendants, the dangers of sleepwalking, getting advice from teammates, and more. We even got into the minutia of podcasting toward the end of the episode; hope you enjoy the peek behind the curtain. Don't forget to subscribe - we're on a whole bunch of new platforms now - and to follow us on Facebook and Instagram for more of your podcasting content. Enjoy!
Episode six of Track Cocaine features Shay and DB rotating times as co-hosts due to schedule differences. However, the trio does their thing as usual. Shay and Trevor recap the notable events from the weekend at USATF Outdoor Championships in Iowa including events like the 10,000m win by Lopez Lomong, the up and coming young sprinter in Noah Lyles, the return to the top by Matthew Centrowitz in the 1500m, Shelby Houlihan's new found dominance, and various other events. Trevor and DB then interview Woody Kincaid of the Bowerman Track Club. They ask what made him fall in love with the sport, why he chose to run for University of Portland, his summer training in Kenya, and what it's like running for BTC.
MUST READ: https://www.si.com/edge/2018/04/02/gwen-jorgensen-triathlon-track-debut-marathon-goals-nike A quick bonus episode of The CITIUS MAG Podcast to get you through the rest of your week. Earlier this week, I released an extensive Q&A with Olympic triathlon champion Gwen Jorgensen. It's generated a bit of chatter online in a good way. If you're a fan of the sport, it's definitely something worth getting excited about: How a gold medalist in one sport translates into another with the lofty goal of winning gold again. In the interview, she addresses everything from joining the Bowerman Track Club, coming back after pregnancy, training with Shalane and responding to the critics that give her a zero percent chance of winning gold. Lots that and more listen up but also read the full article on SI now. You can catch the latest episode of the podcast on iTunes so subscribe and leave a five-star review. We are also now on Stitcher and now Google Play! We will return to regularly scheduled programming on Friday. The show will feature an interview with former Oregon Duck distance runner Emma Abrahamson, who is making a name for herself on Youtube and just accepted a job with Doyle Management Group. If you enjoy this interview with Gwen and you're looking for more interviews with Bowerman Track Club runners, we have the podcast for you on the CITIUS MAG Podcast Network. Check out the Price of a Mile with Woody Kincaid. It's a monthly-ish show hosted by Woody as he interviews his training partners and gets to know them through very candid and insightful conversations. There should be a new episode soon! He promises.
Matt Hughes of Bowerman Track Club stopped by the podcast to record an incredible episode covering long-run topics ranging from half-tights versus shorts to burrito bets. Matt is a 2016 Olympian and the Canadian record holder in the 3000m steeplechase. He was in Boston running the Valentine Invitational at BU and is currently training in Toronto. This week's cohost, Louis Serafini, is a 13:54 5000m runner for Tracksmith Hare AC and a graduate of Boston College. A few important notes for this episode: 1) We have a theme song! 2) Bowerman Track Club nickname translator: "CD" is Chris Derrick. "Bumby" is Andrew Bumbalough. "Jager" is Evan Jager. "Mo" is Mohammed Ahmed. "Woody" is Woody Kincaid, and "Jerry" is coach Jerry Schumacher. 3) Spoiler alert for Star Wars: The Last Jedi.
We decided to do a little crossover episode between the CITIUS MAG Podcast and The Price of A Mile With Woody Kincaid. He joined the show to discuss his first season as a professional runner with the Bowerman Track Club and coach Jerry Schumacher. Woody ran four indoor races before a stress fracture derailed his year but there were some great moments. He clocked a 13:12.22 a the Boston University Last Chance Meet in February and then finished second to Paul Chelimo at the 2017 U.S. Indoor National Championships. Before turning professional, Woody ran for the University of Portland so he shares some of his favorite memories as a Pilot and whether Rob Connor may have fudged up his story from NCAA Cross Country Nationals a little bit. Woody joined the CITIUS MAG team when we started the site when he pitched doing a month podcast, where he interviews his fellow Bowerman teammates. It's a great show and if you're not subscribed to the Price of A Mile with Woody Kincaid, you're missing out. Other questions from listeners include: Who would he put on a DMR against the Nike Oregon Project? What's the dumbest purchase that he's made since signing a professional contract? Who is the most competitive teammate that he's ever had? Much more on the show. You can catch the latest episode of the podcast on iTunes so subscribe and leave a five-star review. We are also now on Stitcher and now Google Play! ------ This episode was brought to you by Maurten.
