You know how Anna's spent the last month begging for more Spectre backstories? Well, “Out of Darkness” and “Empire Day” (Rebels S1, episodes 7–8) deliver them in a big way. In this week's recap, we talk about Ezra's tragic backstory, Sabine's time as a cadet on Mandalore, and Hera and Kanan meeting. We also dive deep into the tyranny, propaganda, consent, and control strategies the Empire deploys—especially on Empire Day, the 15th anniversary of Palpatine's victory over the galaxy. Join us next week to resolve the “Empire Day” cliffhanger in episodes 9–10, “Gathering Forces” and “Path of the Jedi.” This is also a great time to sign up for our Patreon for bonus audio content! This week, we're watching and talking about the Volume 2 premiere of the 2003 Tartakovsky Clone Wars. Welcome to Halloween in August. This week's Rebels episodes are a spooky bunch. “Rise of the Old Masters” and “Breaking Ranks” (Season 1, episodes 5–6) take us to a remote fortress called the Spire where Luminara Unduli is being held captive, and the inside of the Imperial child soldier academy. They're callbacks to classic Clone Wars plotlines: the Rako Hardeen arc, Boba Fett infiltrating Tipoca City, and the Citadel arc. And they also take us to new understandings of childhood (or the lack thereof) in Star Wars, being a teacher even when you don't feel ready, and choosing the family you have. This is a great time to sign up for our Patreon for bonus audio content! This week, we're sharing leftover topics from this week's episode: debates on the quality of Stormtroopers as soldiers, and how Star Wars handles Blackness. And you can join us next week for episodes 7–8 of Star Wars Rebels: Out of Darkness and Empire Day. Timestamps: 00:00:00 Plot Overview 00:14:44 Rise of the Old Masters Discussion 00:27:25 Child Soldiers and Childhood in Star Wars 00:44:51 Luminara Discussion 00:47:53 Bae Watch 00:53:10 End Credits --- Send in a voice message: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/growingupskywalker/message
In this episode, we let you inside one of the most exciting pedagogical experiments of 2022-23. A year in the making, The Empire Day Project, is part of Director of Drama and Dance, Chris Griffin's, 'My Place in the World: Past, Present and Future' project which has been running with Year 8 since September. The idea of the project is to look at lessons from the past and present in order to help students shape their conception of a bright future. The Empire Day Project is an experiential and immersive learning experience that that sees 162 Year 8 students, spend a day and a half in the Surbiton Assembly Rooms, which has had every room transformed into an interactive learning environment to help them understand the impact of the British Empire in a three dimensional way. Some rooms teach students about the spice trade, other rooms teach about the slave trade; in some rooms there are Year 12 students dressed up as historical figures whom students can ask questions about the British Empire; in other rooms, students scan QR codes attached to vintage artifacts in order to teach themselves about the past. The idea is to create an environment for students to independently learn and explore the history of the British Empire, exploring both the successes and the shortcomings of the empire, the idea being to help students understand exactly what has elevated the UK to the status and economic power it has today, and to give students a firm historical platform in order to make decisions about what will happen tomorrow.
For the last few months, we've been getting to know the crew of the Ghost. But how much have we learned about them really? Sure, we know that Zeb's people suffered occupation and (apparently) genocide, or that Hera is able to make hard decisions for the greater good. But give it some thought: What do we really know about these folks? What's Sabine situation, besides paint and high explosives? How much training did Kanan really get? How did Ezra come to be everyone's favorite force sensitive street rat? Well, it's time to start getting answers, beginning with that last question. Today, we learn about Ezra's past and parentage. Or at least we watch a story about those things. Somehow, we still don't actually know what happened to them. Maybe that'll be stage 3 of getting to know the crew. Next Time: Rebels 10 - 12 ("Path of the Jedi," "Idiot's Array," and "Vision of Hope") Show Notes Hosted by Rob Zacny (@RobZacny) Featuring Alicia Acampora (@ali_west), Austin Walker (@austin_walker), and Natalie Watson (@nataliewatson) Produced by Ricardo Contreras (@a_cado_appears) Music by Jack de Quidt (@notquitereal) Cover art by Xeecee (@xeeceevevo)
With this pair of episodes, it seems accurate to say we've truly entered Rebels proper. Not because some production technique has finally hit its stride, or because we've reached some grand revelation, or seen a major swing in character development. Instead, it's because these are just two totally familiar, stock procedural episode formats: "Kid goes undercover" and "two people argue and bond in the wilderness." And good news: They're pretty good episodes! Not quite season finale level material or anything, but solid, fun, and well executed. And hey: space waffles! What happens to the narrative when an iconic theme like the "Imperial March" becomes diegetic? What does that do to the audience? Samantha Tripp is here to help us explore this fascinating topic today. We discuss Solo, Rebels, the British Empire, the efficacy of propaganda music, and other bits and pieces from minutes 11-15 of Solo: A Star Wars Story. Discussion Guide: 00:00 - Hello there! 01:49 - Characteristics of the diegetic Imperial March in Solo ("Empire Recruitment") 18:25 - John Powell's own words about his diegeticization of the Imperial March. 26:30 - Comparing this to Star Wars: Rebels ("Glory of the Empire") 35:35 - Could we reverse-engineer Williams's original "Imperial March" by taking this Edwardian Pax-Britannica-style version and putting it through a filter of chromaticism? 45:01 - Does the propaganda do its job? 50:49 - David Glen Russell possibly wrote the "Glory of the Empire" theme for Rebels. 1:02:40 - SWMM Questionnaire Things Mentioned: Star Wars Rebels Season 1 - "Glory of the Empire" - https://youtu.be/TouCl6yp13A Elgar - Pomp and Circumstance March No. 1 (Land of Hope and Glory) - https://youtu.be/Vvgl_2JRIUs Walton - Orb and Sceptre Coronation March - https://youtu.be/Qir5ndIlsJ8 Walton: Crown Imperial: A Coronation March - https://youtu.be/fraKCzza0To Resistance Broadcast interview with John Powell: https://youtu.be/Ujm6aLuN7yQ Another example of a patriotic march but for the USA: The Stars and Stripes Forever by John Philip Sousa - "The President's Own" U.S. Marine Band - https://youtu.be/a-7XWhyvIpE Themes: 4. Han & Q'ira 2a. Young Han Solo (Searching, comp. JW) 3. Secrets 10a. Imperial March (Theme) 1. Young Han Solo (Heroic, comp. JW) 5. The Gang Note: I use the theme names and numbers established in Frank Lehman's Complete Catalogue of the Musical Themes of Star Wars. You can download it free at his website: https://franklehman.com/starwars/. Soundtrack: "Spaceport" / "Spaceport (1M6-7)" "Gonna Be a Pilot (1M8)" "Empire Recruitment (1M9)" "Mimban Battle (1M10A-B)" STAR WARS MUSIC MINUTE QUESTIONNAIRE: 1. In exactly 3 words, what does Star Wars sound like? Powerful, evocative, grandiose. 2. What's something related to Star Wars music or sound that you want to learn more about? Musician stories from recording the sequel films, particularly The Rise of Skywalker. What is it like sitting in the orchestra, hearing those themes, and trying to make connections in the film ahead of time? 3. What's a score or soundtrack you're fond of besides anything Star Wars? The Shape of Water (composed by Alexandre Desplat) Bonus Question: What would you encourage listeners to pay extra attention to on their next viewing of Solo: A Star Wars Story? The juxtaposition between the Imperial March in the advertisement versus the battle. Also, the way that John Powell's score creates and plays with tension as Han and Qi'ra are trying to make their way through the barrier, then later on, as Han is hiding. Listen for the string ostinati, etc. Samantha Tripp: YouTube channel and website in progress! -------- If you enjoyed this episode and want to show extra appreciation, feel free to buy me a coffee and shout out the guest! https://buymeacoffee.com/starwarsmusmin If you want to support the show, consider becoming a patron! https://patreon.com/chrysanthetan Leave a voice message, and I might play it on the show... https://starwarsmusicminute.com/comlink Where else to find SWMM: Spotify: https://smarturl.it/swmm-spotify Apple Podcasts: https://smarturl.it/swmm-apple YouTube: https://youtube.com/starwarsmusicminute TikTok: https://www.tiktok.com/@starwarsmusicminute? The abstract was co-written by Samantha Tripp and her advisor Frank Lehman. The Suns Never Set on the Galactic Empire: Recursive References and In-Universe Instances of “The Imperial March” Allowing a non-diegetic theme to slip into the realm of source music is nothing new: ever since Siegfried tooted his own horn(motif), composers of narrative multimedia have found ways for underscore to peek into the diegetic world. But while such moments of diegeticization provide yet another example of the eminently-permeable “fantastical gap,” their ramifications often run deeper than a blurring of narrational levels (Stilwell 2004, Heldt 2013). Because when fictional characters hear their own music, it can provoke a rehearing for the audience. Indeed, the recontextualized “source” of such underscore-as-source-music may turn out to reside as much in nonfictional reality as some fictional diegesis. This presentation explores the implications of rehearing an iconic theme—John Williams' “Imperial March”—through two in-universe instances: David Glen Russell's “Empire Day” from Rebels (2014), and John Powell's “Empire Recruitment” from Solo (2018). These cues both reimagine the minor-mode leitmotif as major-mode musical propaganda. Through close analysis, we demonstrate two contrasting approaches to diegeticization: parodic hyper-chromaticization of the theme's non-functional tonality in Rebels' ceremonial parade; and nostalgic diatonic hyper-correction for Solo's military-recruitment ad. By cannily channeling the nobilmente style of Elgar/Walton, these cues resurface a subtextual “source” of Williams's theme—Edwardian Pax-Britannica style nationalism—and with it the complex relation of imperial-versus-revolutionary politics in Star Wars generally (Buhler 2002, Lerner 2004). We conclude by situating the “Imperial March” at one further level of remove: out of the meticulously controlled diegetic canon of Disney-era Star Wars and into the real world of contemporary protest music.
As the fifth annual Empire Day approaches the capital planet Coruscant is abuzz with celebration. But, deep in the undercity of the planet, four individuals paths cross, and their fates become intertwined. Good morning people! Today is Friday July 2nd, and this is episode 24B! This week's Friday episode starts off with the comic book Pick list: things I found great or interesting from the week's new comic book day reads. Some of the heavy-hitters for me were Barbaric #1, X-Factor #10, and Monstress #35, among the total of 11 discussed this week! After the picks list is the discussion of Loki episode four on Disney+! This week's episode was far superior to the last, IMO, with a plethora of tidbits to pick up on, theories to speculate about, and reveals to excite us all! That end credits scene, whew! I go over the whole shebang, here. Then it's the news! There won't be an episode of Superman and Lois for the next few weeks, which is honestly fine, but the big ticket news item of the day is the Trial of Magneto! After the ending events of X-Factor #10, Leah Williams is bringing fab artist Lucas Werneck to this 2+ issue arc starting in August. Paired with a stunning Mark Brooks homage to Michelangelo's Pieta, this series is a lot to look forward to! The episode wraps up today with brief discussion of the leaked and subsequently announced Spider-Man 3 suit for Peter Parker. It's design tells us a few important things about the movie, which is coming out in December. I'll be back on Empire Day--this Monday, July 5th, for episode 25A, discussing the comic comics book pull list, tonight's episode of Star Wars: The Bad Batch, and any breaking news and announcements! Join The BGS Nerdy Knights as we take a look at the importance of trust and communication within a family as they examine Star Wars: Rebels season 1, episodes 8-10 (“Empire Day,” “Gathering Forces,” and “Path of the Jedi”). We marvel at the levels of power that Ezra is starting to show, feel really bad for poor Tseebo and geek out over Frank Oz’s return as Yoda! We consider what it means to decide to teach someone and the responsibility mentors feel for their mentees. Sara and Colleen are SUPER excited to see that first Loth-Cat and Anders considers what it means for Ezra’s development that his parents were willing to risk him being left alone in order to defy the Empire. Then Flo joins in to give her takes as a first time watcher in Newbie from Naboo! To close, we all explore our questions about these episodes and seek answers in each other and the wider Star Wars lore! Find us online!!! That year, both Empire Day and Victoria Day were, by order-in-council and statutory amendment, respectively, moved to the Monday before May 25 and the monarch’s official birthday in Canada was by regular viceregalproclamations made to fall on this same date every year between 1953 and January 31, 1957,[3][7] when the link was made permanent by royal proclamation.[3][8] The following year, Empire Day was renamed Commonwealth Day and in 1977 it was moved to the second Monday in March, leaving the Monday before May 25 only as both Victoria Day and the Queen’s Birthday.Victoria Day celebrations were marred by tragedy twice: In 1881, the passenger ferry Victoria overturned in the Thames River, near London, Ontario. The boat departed in the evening with 600 to 800 people on board—three times the allowable passenger capacity—and capsized part way across the river, drowning some 182 individuals, including a large number of children who had been with their families for Victoria Day picnics at Springbank Park. The event came to be known as the Victoria Day disaster.[9] Then, on May 26, 1896, the Point Ellice Bridge disaster occurred in Victoria, British Columbia, when a bridge collapsed under the weight of a streetcar overloaded with passengers on their way to attend Victoria Day celebrations.[10]In 2013, a group of prominent Canadian actors, authors, and politicians sent a petition to Prime Minister Stephen Harper, requesting that the holiday be renamed Victoria and First Peoples Day.[11][12]

Foundation Day is the nationwide holiday commemorates the accession to the throne of Japan's first human emperor. The day was originally known as Empire Day in 1872. It is observed in Japan with fireworks and speeches. One of the most elaborate parties is in Tokyo, where special rites are performed at the Imperial Sanctuary. So a good excuse to throw down some Japanese spirits. On this week's show, we're using the occasion of a Japanese national holiday as an excuse to talk about Japanese whisky and sake, with a pair of experts who spend much of their day sipping and analyzing both of these remarkable beverages.

The Cantina Cast presents a “Two for One” edition of RNC: REBELS Empire Day and Gathering Forces. Join Mike and Joao as they double fist this episode after the long awaited cliff hanger from this two part story arc of REBELS. The guys really gulp down on their analytical jawa juices and dissect Ezra’s Fear(s). Even touching upon Kanan’s lessons surrounding a Jedi’s connection to the Force: “You have to let your guard down. You have to be willing to attach to others.” This isn’t the only apparent connection worthy of discussion. It appears the unlikely pair of Sabine and Ezra could quite possibly be in the beginning stages of forging a bond. Which do you prefer: Wookiee Life Day or Empire Day? Mike makes it clear which side he is on as they go over Sabine’s artistic light show and TIE bombing display. “Isn’t life great in the Empire, where you’re protected by all this advanced weaponry and a trained military to wield it? This is how the Imperials celebrate Empire Day with their citizens, might as well just be saying: Don’t even think of going up against us, we have the means and we will crush you. Of course, there’s a little matter of our band of REBELSGathering Forces…Listen in as they insightfully pour another round and dissect the discovery of Ezra’s parents, a tracking beacon attached to the Ghost, a little more on Fulcrum’s identity, the confrontation we’ve been waiting for with the Inquisitor, and Ezra’s Fear, as he unknowingly taps into the Dark Side of the Force.

The one hundredth anniversary of the start of the First World war looms on the horizon. 1914 is a date forged into the British consciousness, just as it's carved into monuments the length and breadth of the UK and many places beyond. With that awareness comes an understanding that it was the war to end all wars, shocking the culture, politics, and societies of Europe, but particularly Britain, out of their comfortable progress and reshaping everything. But in this series Michael Portillo challenges that notion. Looking at a series of themes, the suffrage movement, the Irish question, the decline of the liberal party and the arts, he argues that to a large extent Britain was already in a state of flux by 1913 and many of the developments we think of as emanating from or being catalysed by the war, were actually in full flow. In today's programme Michael turns his attention to The Empire. There's now a vivid understanding of the price in war dead, paid by India, Canada, Australia and South Africa amongst others. It clearly put a huge strain on relations with the mother country. But as Michael discovers, the tensions were already well matured by 1913, in spite of the flag waving of Empire Day and the spectacular celebrations of the Delhi Durbar in 1911. Producer: Tom Alban.

What an exciting week! Fan Faire 2009, Empire Day in SWG, another TCG expansion with even more "exciting" loot, and now this - a new episode of SWGwYaMB! In this episode we talk about our Fan Faire plans, hash out a couple of ideas for SWG, and once again remind everybody why we feel the way in which the free character transfers were done actually hurt rather than helped the community. We also have some more voice mail from listeners weighting in on our continuing debate: Hide or display your toys when dating? We finish up the show by opening up a gift one of our listeners sent us.
