PUBLIC VERSION. Filmmaker Andrew Cumming joins Adam, Joe, and Arwen to discuss the journey to making his debut feature film OUT OF DARKNESS (in theaters now). From starting out with commercials and shorts… to moving into directing episodic television series (RIVER CITY, CLIQUE, COLD FEET)… to getting the inspiration to make a horror/adventure set 45,000 years in the past… to working with his co-writers to create a new language for his characters to speak… to how he pulled off such an ambitious, gorgeously lensed film with limited time and resources… to how he managed to shoot in so many remote locations across Scotland… Andrew is full of great advice for other filmmakers on knowing what your “trailer moments” will be and the art of creating the proper creature shriek! Meet Adam and Joe at ASTRONOMICON in Livonia, MI April 12th - 14th! Adam will also be appearing at HORRORHOUND WEEKEND in Cincinnati, OH (March 22- 24), NEW JERSEY HORROR CON in Edison, NJ (April 19 - 21), and TEXAS FRIGHTMARE WEEKEND in Irving, TX (May 17 - 19)! Spoilerpeeps, this is the 500th episode of the show. Megan couldn't make it this week, leaving the duo of Riedel & Crean. (That doesn't roll off the tongue like Hall & Oates. Such is life.) Dave watched OUT OF DARKNESS (2:04), a survivor horror film (so its marketing says) set 45,000 years ago, about six people struggling in a new, vast, inhospitably cold environment. What keeps attacking them at night? Probably exactly what you think! Then Evan and Dave watched RESTORE POINT (14:36), a dystopian-adjacent sci-fi film with a great production design, but a story that both of them found lackluster (even if one of them still recommends it). Over on Patreon, we talk about the 1980 comedy USED CARS with Kurt Russell and Jack Warden.

It seems like cult movies are a thing of the past. Sure, there are ones that find a big following on streaming networks, but it is not the same as the little films with the outrageous box art that was always rented out. They were the movies whose titles would spring up constantly even though they never played at a theater. Those day are definitely long gone, but one indie film is making noise in the United Kingdom. We have talked a lot about the inglorious fall of the Alien franchise. We have also discussed how Fede Alvarez constantly disappoints us. Now that the two are together, is there any hope for either?Gods of the Deep does not mess around. This means there is no character development and little in the story way of plot. But there is lots of Lovecraft. And the special effects are some of the best to be found in indie cinema. It is a brave decision to forgo pretty much everything that is supposed to make a movie worth watching. Does Gods of the Deep pull it off?Even braver is writing a movie with a made up language and setting it 45,000 years ago. Out of Darkness does just that and gives it a horror twist. We talk about the surprising depth, how scary it managed to be, and whether it was still too pretentious. Adventures in Movies! is a part of the Morbidly Beautiful Podcast Network. Andrew Cumming's feature film debut, OUT OF DARKNESS opens with a small boat reaches the shores of a raw and desolate landscape. A group of six have struggled across the narrow sea to find a new home. They are starving, desperate, and living 45,000 years ago. First they must find shelter, and they strike out across the tundra wastes towards the distant mountains that promise the abundant caves they need to survive. But when night falls, anticipation turns to fear and doubt as they realize they are not alone. Terrifying sounds suggest something monstrous at large in this landscape, something that could kill or steal them away. As relationships in the group fracture, the determination of one young woman reveals the terrible actions taken to survive. OUT OF DARKNESS uses a language called TOLA invented by poet, historian and multi-linguist Dr. Daniel Andersson. TOLA stands for ‘The Origin Language' and is a mix of Arabic as well as some Basque vocabulary. Director Andrew Cumming (Payback, Cold Feet) stops by to talk about the challenges of making his debut feature film in a stark location, using dialog from a made up language, working with a talented but largely unheralded cast of actors that includes Safia Oakley-Green, Chuku Modu, Arno Lüning and Kit Young and how project has given him the confidence to trust his creative instincts. This thought-provoking episode with an ordained minister in the Four-Square Church and author of Victorious Spiritual Warfare, Maureen Broderson, will help you recognize the nature and background of the struggle between God and Satan. Listen as Maureen describes how she battles in her walk of faith and where and how she achieves triumph. "So, the enemy will masquerade himself. The word tells us, he comes pretending he's a sheep, or he comes as a roaring lion." -Maureen Broderson. Listen as Maureen gives us a realistic and genuine Biblical response to help us fight from a position of victory Christ secured at Calvary rather than merely fighting for victory, and listen to the end for a profound prayer.   CONNECT WITH OUR GUEST: Maureen Broderson, Victorious Spiritual Warfare: So Simple, Grandma Can Do It, Maureen Broderson Website, Facebook, LinkedIn   Welcome Home, New Believer Workbook-FREE PDF Download when you enter your email! We trust you will enjoy this episode with Carolyn McCulley, but we did want to let you know that we cover some heavy topics that might be triggering to some listeners. Carolyn is a filmmaker, and in this episode, she discusses her work in covering gun violence and sexual assault. We wanted you to be aware in case that type of content was not what you were expecting to hear. As always, we love learning from women who take these hard subjects and seek to redeem them to the glory of God through their work. We hope you enjoy this episode.   Carolyn McCulley is a storyteller in multiple formats. She is a filmmaker, podcast producer and host, and author of several books. She has run her own production company, Citygate Films, since 2009, which has been a great way of experiencing God's faithfulness in many ways.   Carolyn has directed, produced, and edited nearly 200 short films for clients while also working on her own film projects. Citygate Films has produced branded content for clients such as Discovery, WebMD, AstraZeneca, Adventure Scientists, Chick-Fil-A, Capital One, International Justice Mission, and numerous nonprofits. My most widely viewed short film has been seen by more than six million people and was the inspiration for a segment in Oprah's BELIEF series. Her independent film, The Rage of Evil, was about a former school shooter and was acquired by HuffPost.   She is currently working on a film project called Out Of Darkness in which she showcases the advocacy of Rachael Denhollander in one individual sexual abuse survivor's case within the sexual abuse crisis of the Southern Baptist Convention. You can support her work through a tax-deductible donation here. Carolyn is the author of 3 books including The Measure of Success: Uncovering the Biblical Perspective on Women, Work, and the Home. It was a silver finalist in the ECPA Book Awards and won an award of merit in the Christianity Today Book Awards. She has also written for a wide range of publications, including The Washington Post and Baltimore Sun.    For more than 15 years, she has been a speaker at women's conferences in the U.S. and abroad, sharing narratives of hope and perseverance.   In this episode, Carolyn discusses with Courtney and Missie:   –– How she acquired the skills of filmmaking and the importance of storytelling –– How her work in film and podcast production brings stories of redemption and hope to others, even in hard topics such as gun violence and sexual assault –– How her views of womanhood have changed since coming to Christ –– How she works with men on set in a God-honoring way as a single, Christian woman –– How she hopes in God amidst the idolization of marriage within the church   Resources Mentioned The Courage to Face Failure Podcast   The Measure of Success: Uncovering the Biblical Perspective on Women, Work, and the Home    Did I Kiss Marriage Goodbye?: Trusting God with a Hope Deferred

To many, book banning and burnings probably seem like an issue found in small towns in movies like Footloose, but since the publishing of The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn in the 1880s, the banning of books has been a part of our society. Challenged classics, like To Kill a Mockingbird and Of Mice and Men, to modern stories continue to face backlash from parents and organizations who want to implement their beliefs in schools. Curtis Jackson speaks with Ashley Perez, literature professor at Ohio State University and author of the banned book, "Out Of Darkness," to talk about book banning and the effect that it's having on children in education.

Since I joined this organization, I have had friends I’ve known for years write me literal letters sharing their personal struggles. I have strangers notice my AFSP shirt or bumper sticker and strike up a conversation with me. By being more open about mental health and not avoiding using the word ‘suicide’, it gives people permission to open up themselves, to know you are someone who will not judge them."Whether you have struggle with suicide yourself or have lost a loved one, know you are not alone. On iTunes and elsewhere (like PlayerFM.com) all of the audio is visible on a single page but on sites like Talkshoe you have to scroll through multiple pages so it can get a bit tedious to view the older shows. NOTE: When the next "Blast From The Past" is uploaded the previous BFTP show will be deleted. Here's the first podcast we did on the subject of Bible Prophecy that was part of a longer audio file that had some spooky Halloween influence. Only on "Out Of Darkness,Into The Light" would you have a serious discussion of Eschatology in-between theories about Black Eyed Children and tales of spooky tunnels on the way to Subterrania! SHOW NOTES:Time: 09/22/2012 07:03 PM EDT Episode Notes: This is the latter part of a call that began with Rachel's second testimony of being harassed by occultists. Because of a remark Dave made about personal revelations that involved Rachel being on the Exodus, he presented an overview of Bible prophecy that has very little to do with what Christians currently believe. He made the point that the heavenly messiah will not rule on the throne of David until the end of the present age. BEFORE that can happen there will be a literal exodus event that takes place over an extended period of time that will culminate with the restoration of the New Israel after which the earthly prince in the latter part of Ezekiel will rule the nations from a rebuilt Jerusalem for an extended period of time. This is the first attempt we've made to reveal a basic outline of our prophetic views on the future. In parish notices for the podcast, I will be moving house back to The Money Pit in the very near future. The podcast is planned to remain on schedule throughout this geographical disruption. Also, I have set up a newsletter for the podcast, which you can join at http://eepurl.com/bBMENL and will include all the latest podcast news along with some dogs in comedy knitwear. Also, there's a listener survey for you to take part in. I'd love to hear your opinions, and will be offering a yarny giveaway incentive. Look out for this on the blog and social media for the link. In woolly news, it's Wool Week in the UK between 5-11 Oct, with most of the activity being focused around London (typical!).
