On this week's episode, Nathan and Luke are joined by some guy they know named Ethan Gach to discuss the aftermath (lol) of Summer Game Fest. Ethan was on the ground at the show in LA, so he fields questions about the Geoff Keighley-powered husk that E3 left behind. We ultimately arrive at the same question people do after every single one of these things: Is an event like Summer Game Fest needed in a digital age where video game companies can spin up showcases whenever they want? Then we move on to our favorite games of the show, which consist of Killer Bean, Doom, and probably even a third thing. We also discuss a general feeling of malaise that hung over this year's show. On one hand, Geoff and associated companies debuted some cool games, but it all felt so… expected. Where once the original Fable pioneered wild new ideas about what a game could be, the trailer for the latest installment in the now long-running series is just a bunch of callbacks. In pursuit of surefire profit, are triple-A games stuck in a rut? Finally, we end on a conversation about sending cats back in time, so you'll definitely want to stick around for that. About The Show Aftermath Hours is the flagship podcast of Aftermath, a worker-owned, subscription-based website covering video games, the internet, and everything that comes after from journalists who previously worked at Kotaku, Vice, and The Washington Post. Each week, games journalism veterans Luke Plunkett, Nathan Grayson, Chris Person, Riley MacLeod, and Gita Jackson – though not always all at once, because that's too many people for a podcast – break down video game news, Remember Some Games, and learn about Chris' frankly incredible number of special interests. Sometimes we even bring on guests from both inside and outside the video game industry! I don't know what else to tell you; it's a great time. Simply by reading this description, you're already wasting time that you could be spending listening to the show. Head to aftermath.site for more info.

Ethan Gach is a senior reporter at Kotaku and has been responsible for a lot of the site's coverage of the Activision-Blizzard lawsuit, in which the company has been accused of a staggering number of gender discrimination and sexual harassment charges. Back in July, Ethan's reporting revealed details and photographs of the "Cosby Suite", a Blizzcon hotel room described by the lawsuit as a place for one high profile Blizzard developer to hit on and harass female employees while at the show."The screenshot spoke for itself in a way. This is the top level allegation that's being made against this studio, that all of these different behaviours, misconduct, mistreatment fall under this larger umbrella that people who have any conception of frat culture will understand to be often white male dominated, aggressive and sexually predatory. And here was this suite and this screenshot that are showing that exact behaviour."Support the show (https://www.patreon.com/peoplemakegames)

We had to do it. How could we not talk about GameStop this week? First, Ash leads us down memory lane by getting all of us to reminisce about our most salient times at the good ol' gaming store. Then, we discuss our own experiences of working in brick and mortar gaming stores, from GameStop to FYE (anyone remember FYE??). And finally, we're joined by Kotaku staff writer Ethan Gach about his reporting on the GameStop Wallstreet fiasco.
On this special episode of the podcast, we look at the challenges journalists and the games media have faced in 2020. For this discussion, we're joined by USGamer editor-in-chief Kat Bailey, VideoGamesChronicle editor-in-chief Andy Robinson, VG247 assistant editor Alex Donaldson, and Kotaku staff writer Ethan Gach. Together, the panel reflects on the impact of event closures, the unorthodox build-up to the next-gen consoles, the lack of networking, limitations when interviewing developers or previewing games, and more. As always, you can get more news, insight and analysis at www.gamesindustry.biz.
Episode 215: Kirk and Maddy talk about games they're playing, with Kirk still restricting himself to beating A Plague Tale: Innocence before he can start playing The Evil Within 2. After a break (22:54), they bring on Kotaku staff writer Ethan Gach for a Destiny 2 update and more emails from listeners about hard-won gaming accomplishments. Rob is joined by Cameron Kunzelman and Ethan Gach to return to the world of Frostpunk before the frost as the panel considers the game's latest DLC, The Last Autumn. In some ways it's an expansion the reveals some of the worst traits of Frostpunk, but in some other ways it reinvents and reimagines the game as a trickier and more credible management game.

Level 67 New Challengers. We welcome back to the adventures of Splacktaw player 1 and player 2 today on another level. This time they are highlighting Cole Train Himself, jumping and dodging through the pre-releases, and ending this level with the news boss. This boss has some powers of #Microsoft looking at new competition, #Stadia also has a new rival emerges on the scene and #PS5 website goes live. Let see if the players can handle this one. If you want to send us mail? Email us at Games@blackenstudios.com Intro (5min) What have you been playing? AUGUSTUS COLE COALITION OF ORDERED GOVERNMENTS Augustus Cole, a.k.a. Cole, a.k.a. "The Cole Train," is an adrenaline junkie and former professional Thrashball player who gave up his comfortable sports career to enlist in the COG army after his family was killed by Locust in Jannermont. He was actually one of the first to enlist after Emergence Day--just six days later. Cole has been a prominent character since Gears of War 1. Cole is charismatic, confident and enthusiastic about everything. He craves action and prefers to take the most direct path to the Locust Horde in any situation. What he lacks in finesse he makes up for in raw energy. He often uses his irrepressible good humour and optimism to cheer up his fellow Gears, especially when things get bleak. Even when the sheer brutality of the war gets to him or he misses his parents, Cole usually hides it in order to not affect morale. Along with his enthusiasm and charm, Cole is supremely confident in his ability to overcome anything, regardless of the odds, and he hasn't been proven wrong yet. His aggression against the Locust definitely hearkens back to his competitive sports background. -source gearsofwar.com Break 5-minute mark Re Pre Releases #Yakuza5 - Feb. 11th PS4 - “This release marks the first time Yakuza 5 will be available in a physical format in the West, so the collection also includes a genuine Yakuza 5 PS3 case; after 5 years since the game’s original release, series collectors can finally fill the gap in their library!" Yakuza Remastered Collection $59.94 #DARKSIDERSGENESIS - Feb. 4th PS4, XB1, - “From the Dawn of creation, the Council has maintained the balance across existence. Carrying out their orders are the Horsemen, nephilim (powerful beings spawned from the unnatural Union of Angels and demons) who have pledged themselves to the Council and been granted immense power. However, this power came at a tragic cost: the Horsemen were ordered to use their newfound strength to wipe out the rest of their kind. What followed was a bloody battle on Eden where the Horsemen, obeying the will of the Council, annihilated the nephilim. Still reeling from the events on Eden, war and strife have been given a new assignment -- lucifer, the enigmatic and deceptive demon King, has been plotting to upset the balance by granting power to master demons throughout Hell. War and strife must hunt down these Masters, gather information, and ultimately fight their way through a tangled, demonic conspiracy that threatens to forever upset the balance and unravel all of creation. Darksiders: Genesis is an action/adventure that tears its way through hordes of demons, Angels, and everything in-between on its way to Hell and back with guns blazing and swords swinging. So, what are the games? Ubisoft confirmed three of them: Watch Dogs Legion, Gods & Monsters and Rainbow Six Quarantine. The other two are a Vikings-themed Assassin's Creed and the next Far Cry, according to Kotaku's Jason Screier. -Source eurogamer editor Wesley Yin-Poole BioWare plans a 'substantial reinvention' to Anthem… BioWare will seek to “reinvent” Anthem’s gameplay in a “longer-term redesign” of the embattled online multiplayer action game, studio head Casey Hudson said today in a blog post. This confirms a Kotaku report from November. “Over the coming months we will be focusing on a longer-term redesign of the experience, specifically working to reinvent the core gameplay loop with clear goals, motivating challenges and progression with meaningful rewards—while preserving the fun of flying and fighting in a vast science-fantasy setting,” Hudson wrote in the post. “And to do that properly we’ll be doing something we’d like to have done more of the first time around—giving a focused team the time to test and iterate, focusing on gameplay first.” -Source kotaku editor Ethan Gach Microsoft’s Xbox boss says Amazon and Google are ‘the main competitors going forward’... Microsoft’s head of gaming and Xbox, Phil Spencer, has revealed that the company sees Amazon and Google as its main competition for the future. Speaking in an interview with newly launched technology publication Protocol, Spencer dismisses Sony and Nintendo’s ability to create a cloud infrastructure that will challenge Microsoft, Google, or Amazon. “When you talk about Nintendo and Sony, we have a ton of respect for them, but we see Amazon and Google as the main competitors going forward,” says Spencer. “That’s not to disrespect Nintendo and Sony, but the traditional gaming companies are somewhat out of position. I guess they could try to re-create Azure, but we’ve invested tens of billions of dollars in cloud over the years.” -Source the Verge editor Tom Warren The official PS5 website is live, suggesting an imminent announcement… Sony has sneakily launched the PS5 homepage on the PlayStation website, setting the stage for the much rumoured February reveal event for its next-gen console, due to release in Holiday of this year. As initially spotted on Reddit, both the UK and German versions of the website are now live, and allow users to sign up for all the latest PS5 news directly via email from PlayStation itself, while once again confirming the product's logo and Holiday launch window. -Source gamesradar editor Alex Avard 'Final Fantasy VII' cafes opening in Tokyo and Osaka to celebrate legendary game’s remake… The New Square Enix Cafe Tokyo promises 50-percent more seats than the previous location, which was already an awesome place to eat. The cafes will have full menus inspired by the "Final Fantasy" franchise’s best-loved arc, with the previewed food items so far including a fruit parfait evocative of flower seller (no spoilers!) Aerith and a Moogle sweet bean bun. The stars of the drink menu are a pair of non-alcoholic cocktails saluting "Final Fantasy VII’s" rivals with extra-long hair and oversize swords. The Cloud drink is a refreshing mix of pine juice and lemon gelatin (colored black, like the darkness that lurks in the hero’s heart), while the Sephiroth’s “bewitching flavor” comes from pomegranate syrup and ginger. Naturally, they’re garnished with a Buster Sword and Masamune, respectively. -Source Japantoday editor Casey Baseel

When Ubisoft announced that it would be working with Joseph Gordon-Levitt's HitRecord crowdsourcing platform to solicit 10 community music tracks for inclusion in its 2020 open-world hackathon "Watch Dogs: Legion", it no doubt expected the announcement to be met with a certain amount of positivity. But at Kotaku, IGN, Eurogamer, GameDailyBiz, and a host of others, that was very far from the case. What is HitRecord and what is Ubisoft offering in exchange for the rights to the 10 selected songs? Why do some view the HitRecord deal as "exploitation" and what have they said in defense of such stance? How can economics, including the laws of supply and demand, inform our understanding of the parties at issue? And why is Ubisoft's primary argument regarding the autonomy of artists actually pretty compelling? We'll never exploit you in...Virtual Legality. Kirk and Maddy start off by talking about the biggest news of the last week: the sudden closure of Telltale Games, a move that left more than 200 game developers out of work with no severance. (Well REALLY, they start out by talking about comically huge mouse pads, if we're being totally accurate.) After talking about the Telltale debacle, they discuss Sony finally opening up the PS4 to cross-play with other consoles, how a Shadow of the Tomb Raider fan found an unintended post-credits cutscene by playing the game without the day-one patch, and how Nintendo's tight-lipped approach to explaining their games lets fans create things as wonderful as Bowsette, a.k.a. Peacher. They close out with some talk of how Destiny 2 has become life-devouringly good, how Maddy has been charmed by last year's Battle Chef Brigade, and some off-topic TV, podcast, and music recommendations. It's time for another excellent episode of Nerds Without Pants! Oh, you lucky, lucky people. This week, it's all about JRPGs for the main topic, but as always we begin with Consumption Junction. Since Julian and Angelo bored the pants off of everyone last time, the lion's share of the opening segment is spent on Patrick's vacation to New York City. Museums were visited! Broadway shows were watched! Miis were Street Passed! After that, Patrick talks about how easily he breezed through the ending of Fire Emblem, much to Julian's chagrin. This leads nicely into the topic de jour: JRPGs. The crew talks briefly about their origins with the genre, and then try to put their fingers on where they each started to diverge from this type of game. Julian is the most negative, but that may come from the burnout of playing over a hundred RPGs before reaching the current generation. The guys debate the idea that voice acting may have ruined the genre, discuss Lightning's boob job, and more. It's a discussion that's sure to leave you wanting to either high five or punch certain members of the podcast. Oh, and here's the article by Ethan Gach that Julian was quoted in. THIS WEEK'S MUSIC: Wild Arms- Lone Bird in the Shire The Phantom of the Opera- Music of the Night Secret of Mana- Kind Memories Suikoden 2- A Peaceful Mountain Village Bonus- White Rabbit
