Mike Maxwell is the owner of Double M Ranch and a professional shearer of llamas, alpacas, sheep and even goats. He also does dental work on alpacas and gives shots as well trims hooves. Mike specializes in serving people on small farms with a few to many animals, but not enough to warrant hiring one of the big outfits. Mike is taking care of folks who just cannot access the larger service providers. Mike's path into farming and working with animals came through his marriage to his wife, Kimberly, who had the property when they were married. He was, and continued to, work in the corporate world while they were raising sheep and chickens. Ultimately, he taught himself how to shear and take care of these livestock, and he started offering his services to others. His business soon grew larger than he could handle since he kept his corporate job. Then, a twist came. Mike and Kim had planned on one day retiring to Costa Rica, and when Covid 19 ultimately resulted in a red hot housing market in the Treasure Valley of Idaho they realized that they could retire about 5 years earlier than they had planned. So, they sold the farm and made it happen. However, Mike did not want to abandon his customers in Idaho, so twice each year he flies back to Idaho and takes care of everyone's livestock for them.

From journalist and writer Tiffanie Drayton, a provocative and timely memoir about the weight of living in a racist society – and the broken promise of the American Dream In the summer of 2020, as America underwent a reckoning with racism that was centuries in the making, Tiffanie Drayton wrote a provocative, personal, and widely shared New York Times essay called ““I'm A Black American. I Had to Get Out.” In it, she reflects on her choice to leave the U.S. to return to her home island of Tobago, right before the pandemic and the murder of George Floyd—and how she felt grieving and raging for Black Americans from across an ocean. Now, in her powerful new memoir, BLACK AMERICAN REFUGEE: Escaping the Narcissism of the American Dream (Viking; On Sale: February 8, 2022), Drayton is telling her whole story – that of a woman coming to terms with how systemic racism has poisoned America, and ultimately deciding she has to leave the “land of the free” to be truly emancipated. A provocative, personal look at race in America, BLACK AMERICAN REFUGEE follows Drayton's journey from the Caribbean to the U.S., and back again, offering a strident, unflinching look at the toll a lifetime of racism can take. Speaking as a Black American who left our country, she offers a complex and unique perspective on the broken promise of the American Dream – which is too often inaccessible for people of color – as she looks back on her home of twenty years with clear eyes, potent criticism, and unshakable hope for the future.

How much does it really cost to start that tiki bar you've been dreaming about in an exotic beach location? 6 years ago I first met Ariel Pellegrino when he was a young traveler who just moved to Montañita, Ecuador and was riding through town on his new dirt bike. In this episode, I got to catch up with Ariel, and we talk through what it really costs to launch a successful Bar/Restaurant and Night Club in an exotic beach destination like Montañita. The goal of this podcast is to give our listeners an example and real numbers of the true costs to start their bar or club in paradise. This excerpt from the full length interview includes: How much of an initial investment should you plan for a bar or club in paradise? How much is rent, hourly labor a chef for a bar in paradise? In the episode, I speak more about the lapse in new episodes and announce a relaunch of the show on September 1st of this year. I want to bring you the best content I can create and right now I need a little time to make it great. I also want to know if you prefer that Creative Playdate have it's own social media accounts or if keeping everything through my own personal, illustration accounts works for you. If you have an opinion on that or on anything else you'd like to see me do with the show, please get in touch any way you like! On to the episode! Today's interview is with the wonderful illustrator and author, Andrea Pippins. She is passionate about empowering young girls and also about helping us all create our own communities for support and inspiration. She even wrote a book about it, called We Inspire Me. Andrea recently moved to Stockholm, Sweden ahead of the birth of her son. We talk about what it was like to leave her family when she was about to have a child and how she has been able to find some support and community in a new country.
