In 1983, a Florence County wife and mother of five, ran a few errands after work. She passed her huisband and waved to him on his way home but she was never seen alaive again. This heartbreaking cold case has continued to baffle law enforcement even after her body was discovered. This episode for our Host Randal Wallace may be the most fun of any we have done. It tells the story of the life of the Congressional District and region of South Carolina that was the 6th District of South Carolina. It opens after ABSCAM has ended John Jenrette's career and everyone involved is moving on from the scandal. The District was represented by John Napier for a single term, then by a Florence , South Carolina Democrat named Robin Tallon for a number of years. But after the 1990 census the former 6th District is divided up geographically and its political strength evaporates. Tallon steps down as James Clyburn is elected to serve the new 6th District which engulfs Florence County. While Horry County is placed in the South Carolina First District where it is dominated by Charleston S.C. Over the next twenty years the region has several different Congressman all but one of which is from Charleston County with various interest levels for what is happening in Horry and Georgetown Counties. We are represented by Tommy Hartnett, Arthur Ravenell, Mark Sanford, Henry Brown (Berkely County) , and Tim Scott. Then in 2010 everything changed. A new census led to a big fight in the South Carolina State House as the state was awarded a new 7th Congressional District. We will see the maneuverings by the man who could rightfully be called the Father of the 7th district, Alan Clemmons, lead to the South Carolina Pee Dee Region finally getting its seat back in which the region was represented together. That is where the fun part for our Host begins as we relive that very first race for Congress and the election of that first 7th district Congressman ensues. which eventually led to the election of Tom Rice. A race in which our host, Randal Wallace, was a small part as a candidate for Congress. We will also see the rise of our new Congressman Russell Fry, who attained the office just at the beginning of this year , 2024, after his endorsement by former President Donald Trump, and his historic election victory. All of which will lead us back to a final look at the remarkable life and contributions to our region of our first, and until this year, only Horry County native Congressman John Jenrette. His career was a rollercoaster ride of wild excess, historic success, and an enormously dramatic and historic fall, all of which happened in a pivotal 6 year period that laid the foundation for a region of the country that can now lay claim to the title the fastest growing area in the nation. We check back in with Kathy Andrews where 2 years ago when she was in the middle of the fight against Dominion Energy putting a pipeline through her land in Florence County, SC. Now she is Executive Director of BREDL and she is continuing her work on stopping this same pipeline and protecting people's properties. Dominion Energy, one of the nation's top polluters, they have condemned the land of several African-American heirs and working class citizens as part of their proposed pipeline project, which would run along the Great Pee Dee River and through several communities, including Pamplico, SC. And now Dominion has installed a gas pipeline in front of Kathy's home — without notice. She's lived in it for nearly two decades. Kathy said she walked out of her door to see Dominion Energy workers digging a hole in her front yard; something she said she never gave permission or received a notice for. We talk about this as well as how she is getting her community involved. Contact and connect with Kathy: gkandrews4932@gmail.com www.bredl.org

Before the Murdaughs, the Bigham family had their own spotlight in the local news. This murderous and notorious clan hunted their prey in the woods of Pamplico in Florence County for generations. In part one of this story, we see what roots caused this family tree to become so twisted.
It was another huge week in the ‘Murdaugh Murders' crime and corruption saga as prosecutors and defense attorneys for disbarred lawyer/ accused killer Alex Murdaugh faced off in a courtroom in Florence County, South Carolina – debating several key motions in advance of a scheduled January 2023 trial. The hearing revealed significant new information related to the double homicide at the heart of this multi-faceted, multi-layered Southern Gothic drama – including a more detailed timeline for when the murders of 52-year-old Maggie Murdaugh and 22-year-old Paul Murdaugh took place. The Florence hearing before S.C. circuit court judge Clifton Newman was scheduled after a flurry of motions from Murdaugh's lawyers sought to redefine this case – which is part of a broader investigation into a criminal network revolving around Murdaugh and a yet-to-be-defined network of accomplices.Speaking of this network, federal prosecutors are seeking to suppress potential evidence in a federal trial of one of Murdaugh's alleged coconspirators. The evidence in question could help expose that network – making this another troubling development as it relates to the conflicted federal prosecution of the Murdaugh empire.Stay tuned … this news outlet plans on breaking plenty of additional Murdaugh-related news in the coming week.
