Experts, historians and volunteers have been uncovering Connecticut's ties to slavery. It's one thing to unearth this forgotten history, but how do we not forget it?  Meet some of the people working with students to make sure that the stories of enslaved Connecticut residents endure. The Witness Stones Project helps schools and local communities “restore the history and honor the humanity” of enslaved people who helped build Connecticut. What happened centuries ago matters today, the students say. In our final episode, reporter/producer Diane Orson and editorial consultant and curator Frank Mitchell ask: How do we not forget this history? Mitchell discusses ways communities can reimagine their built environment to bring forward these stories. Mitchell also shares his hope that institutions of privilege will partner with community members to memorialize this history together. It's a story of mystery and music. Connecticut church volunteers searching to learn more about their community's history learn that a once-enslaved fiddler named Sawney Freeman lived in their town. They go on a meticulous search to learn about this musician and discover he was also a composer. In fact, handwritten manuscripts of music attributed to Sawney Freeman were stored in a library across the state. The church painstakingly restores his music – and now, for the first time in centuries, his melodies are being performed. In our fourth episode, reporter/producer Diane Orson and editorial consultant and curator Frank Mitchell highlight how Sawney Freeman's music challenges the way most people think about the lives of the enslaved. Mitchell explains how free and enslaved people have shaped the culture of the United States, and he connects the music of Sawney Freeman to today's genre-crossing Black artists, including Lil Nas X and Beyoncé. It started with a phone call from a stranger. A teacher told Pat Wilson Pheanious that her ancestors were enslaved – in Connecticut. They included Candace, who in the late 1700s worked in what is now the Hyland House Museum in Guilford. The discovery “gave me a family I didn't know that I had,” Wilson Pheanious said. She describes it as “the best gift of my life.” In our second episode, reporter/producer Diane Orson and editorial consultant and curator Frank Mitchell discuss what slavery looked like in Connecticut. Mitchell talks about recovering family stories, DNA research and ethical questions that arise when restoring ancestral histories. Spotlight On Arts & Culture | January 11, 2021 | How 2020 Changed the Face of Arts and Culture Funding Hosted by David Green of The Cultural Alliance Of Fairfield County. Our January edition of the SPOTLIGHT is on “How 2020 Changed the Face of Arts & Culture Funding.” This program is inspired by the discussion in our November program that celebrated Federal CARES Act funding for arts and culture organizations. In that show, it became apparent that the intertwined crises of 2020 were changing some of the ways funding decisions were made. We decided to devote this Spotlight program to changes that are taking place within funding agencies and to hear from some new funders on the scene and the ways they are distributing funding. We welcome back Elizabeth Shapiro, Director of the CT Office of the Arts, and Frank Mitchell, chair of CT Humanities Application Review Committee. They are joined by: Jacqueline Coleman, Senior Community Impact Officer for the Hartford Foundation, who put together a working group of artists and arts organizations of color to inform the Foundation’s arts and culture funding; Michael Van Leesten, who has organized a Social Venture Partners’ new Racial Equity Fund for community-based projects with decision-makers based inside those communities; and Abe Hilding-Salorio, Community Outreach Manager for Sustainable CT that funds community projects, using a crowdfunding model, working with Patronicity. Hear how the crises of 2020 continue to affect the networking, strategies, and community relationships within traditional funders and how new funding types are emerging to better deal with the inequities of the prevailing systems.

Hosted by David Green of The Cultural Alliance Of Fairfield County. Celebrate the largest award ever from the CT Office of the Arts (COA): $9 million of COVID Relief Funds to 154 CT arts organizations, by hearing from Liz Shapiro about how this grant was made possible and how it was designed. Hear from CT Humanities' Frank Mitchell about the $2+million it is awarding to humanities organizations - and how this crisis has affected how grant making is done. Three recipients of the COA award, Michael Barker (Westport Country Playhouse), Lawrence Caso (The Klein Auditorium) and Angie Durrell (INTEMPO), will talk about their struggles and successes, and how this grant is helping stave off disaster for them. Hear too from Kathy Maher (Barnum Museum) and Jason Patlis (Maritime Aquarium), two other kinds of organizations not eligible for this grant, on how they are holding together and what the chances of survival though the summer are for them. And hear Senator Tony Hwang make the point that such a large grant is still only part of a continuing mix of federal and state grants, individual giving and foundation philanthropy necessary to keep the arts and culture industry alive through 2022.

Independent curator, Faron Manuel and Jamaal Barber of Studio Noize Podcast interview Frank Mitchell, curator of the exhibition Afrocosmologies: American Reflections at Wadsworth Atheneum Museum of Art for this episode of BAIA Talks. Afrocosmologies: American Reflections October 19, 2019 – January 20, 2020 Black artists explore spirituality and culture in Afrocosmologies: American Reflections. Alongside artists of the late-nineteenth century, contemporary artists define new ideas about spirituality, identity, and the environment in ways that move beyond traditional narratives of Black Christianity. In dialogue, these works acknowledge a continuing body of beliefs—a cosmology—that incorporates the centrality of nature, ritual, and relationships between the human and the divine. Emerging from the rich religious and aesthetic traditions of West Africa and the Americas, these works present a dynamic cosmos of influences that shape Contemporary art. The exhibition brings together the work of an incredible assortment of artists including Romare Bearden, Dawoud Bey, Elizabeth Catlett, Willie Cole, Melvin Edwards, Titus Kaphar, Lois Mailou Jones, Kerry James Marshall, Alison Saar, Hale Woodruff, Shinique Smith, and Kehinde Wiley along with many additional artists of note. It is accompanied by a 156-page, fully illustrated catalogue with essays by Frank Mitchell, Berrisford Boothe, Claudia Highbaugh, and Kristin Hass.

Founder of Mitchell & Ness Nostalgia Company, Peter Capolino. We talk about Peter's family and its relationship to sports. Peter's father, Sisto - later renamed James, by original founders, Frank Mitchell and Charles Ness - began work with Mitchell & Ness (1917), at just 13 years of age. In the early 1950s, Sisto purchased the business, bringing Peter into the fold. Peter describes the meticulous research conducted, allowing Mitchell & Ness to produce such high quality, throwback uniforms. Countless hours were spent, combing through archival newspapers, visiting libraries, museums and numerous sporting halls of fame. We discuss the advances in technology and its impact on how the business manufactured apparel. In 1998, Peter was asked to recreate the history of the NBA (Hardwood Classics), as he had done with MLB's Cooperstown Collection. Peter discusses how he obtained licences for each professional league (including the NFL and NHL), allowing him to produce historically-accurate uniforms. Just before the turn of the millennium, Mitchell & Ness Nostalgia Company's profile exploded, thanks is large part to links with hip-hop and rap artists. Peter shares some stories about Big Boi and André 3000 (Outkast), plus the classic background behind the improbable link between one of his favorite footballers, Sammy Baugh, and Jay Z. Peter also elaborates on the deal he struck with Michael Jordan, getting the licence and exclusive rights to reproduce MJ's Chicago Bulls jerseys. Sports Illustrated has published three-prominent features - Baseball Flannels are Hot (1987), Throwback Hip-Hop Style Points (2002) and Rockin' the Retros (2003) - on Mitchell & Ness Nostalgia Company. Peter sold Mitchell & Ness Nostalgia Company to Adidas, in 2008 - continuing to work for them, a further four years - and still consults with the company today. This conversation is a must-listen for fans of any major-league sport.
