EPISODE 86 - “ANNA MAY WONG: CLASSIC CINEMA STAR OF THE MONTH” - 5/5/2025 Anna May Wong was once the most famous Chinese woman in the world. The trailblazing actress, philanthropist, and fashion icon appeared in over 60 films and was a celebrated star, yet, at the time, she was not allowed to kiss a Caucasian man on screen, which limited the roles she could take, and she was not allowed to buy a house in Beverly Hills. A strange dichotomy, indeed. In recent years, she has enjoyed a much-deserved resurgence. Known as a Trailblazer and a cultural icon, she paved the way for generations of Asian and Asian American actors by proving that talent and perseverance could transcend racist casting conventions. Her life and career continue to influence conversations about diversity, representation, and the politics of race in Hollywood. This week, she is our Star of the Month. It's Popzara's Movie Time! Podcast, where our in-house movie nerds Ethan Brehm and Nate Evans take you on an unscripted journey yakking and chatting about some of their favorite movie moments and cinematic scenes, from past and present, presented without snark and snobbery for your listening pleasure. On deck for this episode are two mid-century movies that would define not just the “surfer movie” genre, but would dramatically influence the American culture landscape. First up is 1959's Gidget, Paul Wendkos' classic starring Sandra Dee in her most iconic role as the lovable, irrepressible title character. Long credited as jump-starting both the summer beach movie genre and helping turn the sport of surfing into a national craze, beneath its bubbly exterior hides a deeper, more complex examination of a post-WW2 generational shift that would change America – and how young Americans saw themselves – forever. Next is 1966's The Endless Summer, Bruce Brown's groundbreaking documentary showcasing a preternatural love not just for the sport of surfing, but those who dedicate their lives searching for the elusive perfect wave. Brown's film, using only footage and his colorful commentary, manages to capture both the spirit of the 1960s while maintaining an optimistic outlook for humanity, despite the enormous cultural upheaval happening across the world.
In the late 50s and early 60s a lot of you watched the very popular “Gidget” movies. Television, film actor, and TV director James Darren was the star of these films, along with co-star Sandra Dee. He played the part of Moondoggie. James was also in “The Guns of Navarone” and “Because They're Young.” And on TV, he was in “The Time Tunnel” and the police drama “T.J. Hooker.” On WOKY, in the 60s, we were playing his hits “Goodbye Cruel World” and “Her Royal Majesty.”

When TVs entered living rooms and Cinerama lit up movie screens, teens went nuts for Troy Donahue. Born Merle Johnson Jr. he was discovered at The Golden Pheasant restaurant in Calabasas by bigwigs, William Asher and James Sheldon. Signed to Rock Hudson's manager Henry Wilson, Troy won the role of Johnny in A Summer Place and was a teen idol by the morning after opening night. A screen dream, Troy's reality was a nightmare. Author Michael Gregg Michaud has written books about Sal Mineo, Mae West, Marlene Dietrich and Diane Mcbain. Michael joins us to discuss his biography, Inventing Troy Donahue: The Making of a Movie Star.Long intrigued by the darker reality behind Hollywood's seemingly perfect presentation, Michael helps us understand the challenges that shaped Troy's life. He lost his father at 14 and undiagnosed dyslexia adversely affected his grades and his sense of worth. Troy began drinking in middle school. He says he was drunk all the way through his two TV series, Surfside 6 and Hawaiian Eye and unable to master new lines because of his learning disability and his inebriation. By the time he made Paul Springs Weekend, he was downing three codeine laced aspirins with a pint of vodka, followed by four lines of cocaine just to get himself up and out the door. This regimen was quickly followed by a career on the skids, financial ruin and four failed marriages. Troy's charm, humor, wisdom and gratitude pulled him through recovery and bonded him for life with ex-wives, girlfriends and screen partners, Suzanne Pleshette, Sandra Dee, Connie Stevens, Diane McBain and Angie Dickinson. We also learn from Michael about his other books, including a brand new one on Mae West's nightclub act. It's called Mae West and Her Adonises.Plus, Fritz and Weezy are recommending the new doc series on Paramount +, Willie Nelson & Family and Loudermilk on Amazon.Path Points of Interest:Michael Gregg Michaud on AmazonInventing Troy Donahue: The Making of a Movie StarTroy Donahue on WikipediaMichael Gregg Michaud on FacebookMichael Gregg Michaud on InstagramWillie Nelson & FamilyLoudermilk - Amazon Prime
At age 14, Kathy Zuckerman discovered the surfer culture in Malibu, CA. Soon, this wave-catching teen had earned the nickname “Gidget.” The Hollywood versions of Gidget, played by such stars as Sandra Dee, Sally Field, and Karen Valentine, were loosely based on Zuckerman's life. But how did that happen? And what brought her to the White Stallion Ranch in Tucson, Arizona years later? The real Gidget chats with Russell about how it all went down.

Harvey Brownstone conducts an in-depth Interview with Founding Member of The Four Preps, Bruce Belland About Harvey's guests: Today's guest, Bruce Belland, is a founding member of one of America's most popular and beloved vocal groups, commonly referred to as America's First Boy Band, The Four Preps. As young teenage students at Hollywood High in 1954, our guest, along with singing partners Glen Larson, Ed Cobb and Marv Ingram, entered a high school talent show, and they kept on performing at high schools until that fateful day in 1956, when they were signed to a recording contract at Capitol Records, making them the youngest vocal group in history to ever sign with a major record label. They recorded dozens of classic songs and produced 8 gold singles and 3 gold albums featuring their signature tunes, “Dreamy Eyes”, "26 Miles (Santa Catalina)," "Big Man," "Lazy Summer Night," “Down By the Station”, “More Money for You and Me”, and many more. In 1957, Cashbox Magazine named The Four Preps the Most Promising Newcomer of the Year. They made numerous appearances on The Ed Sullivan Show, American Bandstand and many other TV variety shows, in addition to singing backup for Ricky Nelson for 4 years on “The Adventures of Ozzie and Harriet”. And of course, they appeared with Sandra Dee in the 1959 movie, “Gidget”. And they sang the theme song from the 1957 Clark Gable movie, “Band of Angels”. The Four Preps headlined at nightclubs, concert halls and college campuses across the country, and toured with everyone from Tennessee Ernie Ford, George Burns and Carol Channing to Henry Mancini, Johnny Mathis, Buddy Rich and Glen Campbell. They received an official commendation from the Air Force for their extraordinary contribution to National Guard Recruitment. And in 2007, they were inducted into the Vocal Group Hall of Fame. And now, our guest has released a fascinating and highly entertaining memoir entitled, “Icons, Idols and Idiots of Hollywood: My Adventures in America's First Boy Band.” This delightful book details our guest's remarkable show business journey, full of great anecdotes, many colourful adventures, and poignant memories of pop culture history. And let me tell you, the chapter about his hilarious experience filming a TV commercial with Annette Funicello at Disneyland is easily worth ten times the price of the book. Wilbur Whateley wants the Necronomicon, and although the library's closing, local coed Nancy is so entranced by Whateley that she's inclined to let him read it. Her professor, Dr. Armitage, isn't thrilled with the idea of someone borrowing the book – even for five minutes – until he realizes who the reader is. Eager to find out more about Wilbur, and his family history of seeking out transdimensional creatures, he invites Wilbur and Nancy to dinner. But Wilbur's not interested in becoming one of Armitage's biographical sketches – he wants Nancy to come back to his home, drink some tea, and… stay there forever. That's when his grandfather, Old Man Whateley arrives, causing Nancy to raise an eyebrow. Why is he so determined to keep her away from the house? What on the upper floors is making all those wind and ocean sounds? And why is Wilbur so desperate to introduce Nancy to the Devil's Hopyard, a stone altar where, it is rumored, his ancestors once performed sacred rituals to call forth a race of creatures that would bring about the end of life as we know it? In today's episode, we'll be turning the record over and saving the rest of the album that everyone got for Christmas in 1978; known officially as Grease: The Original Soundtrack from the Motion Picture. In the second installment of this two-part episode, we'll discuss every song from sides 2, 3 and 4; from the hot rod anthem full of dirty words and the legendary mocking of Sandy for her purity (Ay fungool! I'm Sandra Dee…) to Rizzo's lament on the evils of slut-shaming. Make sure you're wearing a bra, because we might be doing the hand jive.

Our new episode, The Dunwich Horror, with NoHo BoHo Czech Style Pilsner, kindly given to us by North Hollywood's @lawlessbeer drops this Saturday. H.P. Lovecraft's insane story gets the Roger Corman/AIP treatment in this 1970 horror picture that kicks off shOctober. Dean Stockwell is Wilbur Whateley, the shunned weirdo of the shunned Whateley clan of Dunwich. And honestly, he should be shunned. He wants to open a portal to bring "The Old Ones" into our dimension, which ain't gonna be good for us. Wilbur and his twin are the product of an obscene coupling, with Wilbur getting the looks. Sandra Dee, trying to shed her goody goody image, comes along as the object of Wilbur's desire and disturbed plans. It's weird, trippy and freaky, and we paired it with a clean, refreshing, quaffable Pilsner from Lawless. It seems a good pairing, what with the lawlessness of those rascally Whateley's. Join us this Saturday. Thanks for listening! Check out our website SUBSCRIBE: to the show on Apple Podcast or Google Play. You can also find us on Audible, Stitcher, Spotify, and Listen Notes. This week on Black Girl Film Club, we take a long (very long!) hard look at Imitation of Life (1959), directed by Douglas Sirk and starring Lana Turner, Juanita Moore, Susan Kohner, and Sandra Dee. This melodramatic movie and the original 1934 version are so beloved that they've both been included in the National Film Registry and we honestly can't figure out why. It even secured two Best Supporting Oscar nominations! HOW? Also in this episode: we talk about racial passing and its depiction on screen, novelist Fannie Hearst's life and inspiration for the novel of the same name, and even try to reimagine this movie as a blackmail/murder mystery! Our recommendation this week is Roma (2018) dir. Alfonso Cuarón. Support us with a Ko-fi! https://ko-fi.com/blackgirlfilmclub Follow us on Twitter @/blkgirlfilmclub. Three Hammer films today! We're thrilled over Oliver Reed going all out in "Paranoiac" (that scene on the stairs!) and eventually ponder what if it had been the tale of two Reeds. "Scream of Fear" was also named "Taste of Fear" and we wonder about the ability to taste terror while method acting with Susan Strasberg. Those two films were so good that by the time Hammer got to "Nightmare" it was tired. Aaron and I separately, bizarrely, came to the conclusion they wanted Sandra Dee for that one, in which case it would have been amazing, but that wasn't happening so they lost the lead actress part way through. Oh, where was Sandra Dee?! Pretending Sandra Dee was in it makes it better.
