After spending a decade working for appsec vendors, Grant McKracken wanted to give something back. He saw a gap in the market for free or low-cost services for smaller organizations that have real appsec needs, but not a lot of means to pay for it. He founded DarkHorse, who offers VDPs and bug bounties to organizations of all sizes for free, or for as low of cost as possible. While not a non-profit, the company's goal is to make these services as cheap as possible to increase accessibility for smaller or more budget-constrained organizations. The company has also introduced the concept of "fractional pentesting", access to cyber talent when and how you need it, based on what you can afford. This implies services beyond just offensive security, something we'll dive deeper into in the interview. We don't see DarkHorse ever competing with the larger Bug Bounty platforms, but rather providing services to the organizations too small for the larger platforms to sell to. Microsoft delays Recall AGAIN, Project Zero uses an LLM to find a bugger underflow in SQLite, the scourge of infostealer malware, zero standing privileges is easy if you have unlimited time (but no one does), reverse engineering Nintendo's Alarmo and RedBox's... boxes. About Grant McCracken Grant McCracken is an anthropologist studying American culture for 25 years. He is a long-time student of culture and commerce, publishing two books on the topic: Culture and Consumption I, and Culture and Consumption II. He argues that all corporations need to take culture more serious, publishing a book called Chief Culture Officer (Basic Books). This was named one of the best innovation books by BusinessWeek in 2009. His most recent book, Return of the Artisan, delves into the evolution of the artisanal movement from the fringes of the 1970s to the spike of domesticity—home-cooking, gardening, and DIY crafting—caused by COVID-19 and what it means for the future of work and American culture. He is the inventor of The Griff, an early warning system for social and cultural change (see www.mapping-the-future.com). He is credited with spotting the rise of Donald Trump, the fall of Second Life, and the disruption of CPG by Alice Waters and the artisanal movement. Humans are life-long learners — well, most of them anyway. Hackers are certainly the curious and "challenge accepted!" kind. In fact, learning as they go may even be considered a lifestyle. Instead of taking an exam at a university, they dive into a problem to solve, breaking things apart to see how they work and see how they can make them work better than they were originally designed/intended. Eventually, their exam papers become a bug submission via responsible disclosure. The reward? Not a degree, but a bounty. How cool is that? But what is in a hacker's mind? Who wouldn't want to know?In this final episode in the four-pack of conversations looking inside the mind of a hacker, we are joined by Katie Paxton-Fear, Lecturer in Cyber Security, The Manchester Metropolitan University, and Casey Ellis, Founder, Chairman, and CTO for Bugcrowd. Together we bring everything full circle to get the 360-view of what a hacker mindset really is; what does that even mean?To really get the full picture, however, you must listen to the other three episodes:EPISODE 1: With Joan Pepin, then-Chief Security Officer at Auth0, and Ashish Gupta, CEO and President at Bugcrowd | We talk about the business of crowdsourced security (You Can Build Out A Team But It Is Way Better To Turn To The Crowd)EPISODE 2: With Jasmin Landry, Sr. Application Security Advisor at Videotron and Grant McCracken, Senior Director, Program and Security Operations at Bugcrowd | We explore the geographics of hacking: what the researchers target and where they hack from (An International Hacker Community Comes Together To Root Out Technology Weaknesses)EPISODE 3: With Robin Marte, Ethical Hacker/Security Researcher at Bugcrowd, and Michael Skelton, Global Head of Security Operations and Researcher Enablement at Bugcrowd | We explore the demographics of hacking: what methods, experience, and collaboration mechanisms matter to the hacker community (There Will Always Be Hackers — We Just Need More)And, finally, in this grand finale EPISODE 4, we discover how hackers learn, some of the skills and traits they are born with and later acquire, the value of diverse thinking from diverse backgrounds and experiences, and what being part of the hacker tribe means to the hackers (and to society). What was once an elusive badge to gain — an exclusive tribe to be part of — has become both a world that welcomes new talent and a critical component of raising the security posture for so many organizations worldwide. The relationship between the hacker community continues to flourish. Through platforms like Bugcrowd and programs like disclose.io, the hacker community finds a safe and meaningful way to contribute to today's security tomorrow's safety in an increasingly-digital world. But enough talking about it, let's get inside the mind of a hacker.(This contains promotional content: learn more)GuestsKatie Paxton-Fear, Lecturer in Cyber Security, The Manchester Metropolitan University (@InsiderPhD on Twitter)Casey Ellis, Founder/Chairman/CTO, @Bugcrowd (@caseyjohnellis on Twitter)ResourcesLearn more about Bugcrowd and their offering: https://itspm.ag/itspbgcwebDownload and read the complete 2020 edition of the Inside the Mind of a Hacker report by visiting https://itspm.ag/2BeLHUZCatch the full 4-part video/podcast series by visiting https://www.itspmagazine.com/their-stories/2020-inside-the-mind-of-a-hacker-report-unique-histories-shared-destiny-a-bugcrowd-storyLearn more about disclose.ioAre you interested in telling your story?https://www.itspmagazine.com/telling-your-story

Chattanooga Whiskey - Tim Piersant

When Tim Piersant and his former co-founder decided to create a distillery in Chattanooga, Tennessee, they knew there was going to be one specific hurdle to overcome. Prohibition laws made distilling illegal in Hamilton County, and while starting in a neighboring county was an option it wasn't the dream of bringing whiskey back to Chattanooga. Chattanooga Whiskey was born from a Facebook post in 2011. “Would you Drink Chattanooga Whiskey?” They received a resounding "Yes" so they got to work. With the fight to change the century-old laws on the horizon, they needed to start selling whiskey. The company turned to Lawrenceburg Distillers of Indiana to source its first releases, 1816 Reserve and Cask, by January 2012 while making it clear that this whiskey wasn't from Chattanooga. Tim says they wanted to be as transparent as possible, what they were releasing wasn't from Chattanooga,  instead, the goal is to bring it to Chattanooga and make it possible to operate a distillery in their home city. That's where the Vote Whiskey campaign was born. After stalling several times and facing opposition from other distilleries in Tennessee, the "Whiskey Bill" eventually passed in 2014 making it legal for Chattanooga Whiskey to distill its own product. With the help of their new master distiller Grant McCracken, Chattanooga Whiskey began its road to release the first bottle of its own juice, a high malt bourbon. In 2017 it hit shelves in the experimental distillery and in late 2019 evolved into being its flagship releases, Chattanooga Whiskey 91 and Chattanooga Whiskey Cask 111.

Take a walk with anthropologist and consultant Grant McCracken and host Adam Gamwell, as they discuss Grant's new book The New Honor Code: A Simple Plan for Raising Our Standards and Restoring Our Good Names and dig into Grant's uncanny ability to excavate and weave together (American) culture, media, and storytelling, and pull out provocative insights like the need to get more anthropologists and cultural experts into the C-Suite, how we might re-invent honor in the contemporary world, and how setting anthropology free from the academy can reshape it and make the field better for it. In The New Honor Code, Grant draws together ideas from Elizabethan England, insights found while hanging out in people's living rooms interviewing them about their television watching habits for Netflix, the rise of celebrity culture as the closest thing we have to honor today - and why that's a problem - and the seemingly uncrossable gap between American boomers and millennials/GenZ. In mixing all these ideas together, he asks what is honor, why did it seem to disappear from our culture and what would it look like to create a system of honor in contemporary United States that would dissuade people from acting badly with impunity. We dig into all these topics in this episode and Grant has some great advice for any social scientist looking to go into consulting or business or if you're in business, how we can be more savvy and practical about infusing anthropological mindsets and thinking into organizations without hitting people over the head with it, especially if they find the idea of culture confusing. --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/thisanthrolife/message

What used to be shocking has somehow become the new normal in our politics, workplaces, and universities. Sexual predators stalk interns at work and teenagers abroad. Parents try to buy a place for their kids in college. Pharmaceutical companies refuse to acknowledge the Opioid epidemic they helped create. Banks issue credit cards no one ordered, ruining the credit scores and reputations of thousands. It happens so frequently that we can no longer dismiss these cases as a few bad apples. Clearly, something in the system is rotten. Today's guest is cultural anthropologist Grant McCracken , who argues that while most Americans are committed to morality and share basic standards of decency, we're also becoming inured to scandal and shame, and hopeless about the possibility of change. What if we decided to fight it instead? Grant McCracken has a solution—the revival of an ancient idea called honor. BIO: Trained as an anthropologist (Ph.D. University of Chicago), Grant has studied American culture for 25 years. He started the Institute of Contemporary Culture at the Royal Ontario Museum, where he did the first museum exhibit on youth cultures and has taught at the University of Cambridge, MIT, and the Harvard Business School. He is a long-time student of culture and commerce. Many academics prefer to look askance at interactions of culture and commerce. He has explored this theme in two books: Culture and Consumption I,and Culture and Consumption II. He has also looked at how Americans invent and reinvent themselves. He had explored this theme in two more books: Big Hair and Transformations: identity construction in a contemporary culture. A student of American culture. Plenitude published in 1997 looked at the new explosive growth of contemporary culture. In Flock and Flow, he shows how contemporary culture and commerce change. Two years ago, he published a book called Chief Culture Officer with Basic Books that argues that culture now creates so much opportunity and danger for the organization that need senior managers who focus on it full time. He is hoping this will create a new occupational destination for graduates in the arts and humanities. This year Grant is affiliated with the Berkman Center for Internet and Society at Harvard.
