Episode 351: On March 8, 1987, a routine Sunday morning traffic stop on a quiet stretch of Route 640 between Yoho Lake and Hanwell to the southwest of Fredericton, New Brunswick, turned into a tragedy that shocked the nation. Constable Emmanuel “Manni” Aucoin, a 31-year-old highway patrol officer, husband and father of two young children, was shot and killed in the line of duty. His murderer, Anthony Phillip Romeo, an American fugitive who was wanted for another killing in New York, had been fleeing authorities when Aucoin pulled him over for speeding. Romeo shot Aucoin twice in the head as he wrote up a ticket, leaving him to die in his cruiser before fleeing back to the United States. Romeo was later captured, claiming Aucoin was a monster who'd been killing young men. Constable Aucoin was the third Canadian police officer killed on duty in 1987 and was the first and only member of the New Brunswick Highway Patrol ever to die while serving. The broadcast, hosted by Cerys Matthews, featured messages and music for the 37 members of the staff of the British Antarctic Survey (BAS) overwintering in Antarctica at the Rothera (Antarctic Peninsula) and King Edward Point and Bird Island (South Georgia) research stations. In addition to personal messages from family and friends, there were interviews with Professor Dame Jane Francis, Director of BAS and Nadia Frontier, a marine biologist from BAS and former winterer. The transmitter came on the air with a test tone (1108 Hz plus harmonics) about a minute before the program started. As sometimes happens, the first few words of the introduction were missed. The recording is of the transmission first on a frequency of 12005 kHz but after a few minutes it was switched to 13810 kHz due to interference (QRM) on the former frequency. Both frequencies were from the BBC's Woofferton, England, transmitting station. The sender of the 12005 kHz frequency had a registered power of 300 kW with antenna beam 182 degrees, while that for 13810 kHz was registered as 250 kW with an antenna beam of 180 degrees. The transmission was received on a Tecsun PL-880 receiver with a Tecsun AN-03L 7-metre wire antenna outdoors in Hanwell (just outside Fredericton), New Brunswick, Canada, in AM mode with 2.3 kHz RF filtering. Reception on 13810 kHz was quite good with little noise or fading and very good signal strength. The additional parallel frequency of 7255 kHz from Dhabbaya, United Arab Emirates, was not heard.

RIAS BUILDING IN BERLIN WITH NEON LOGOS NOW USED BY DEUTSCHLANDRADIO (AVDA, WIKIMEDIA) Live, off-air, approximately 45-minute recording of RIAS, Rundfunk im amerikanischen Sektor, on 22 October 1992 beginning at about 23:15 UTC on 6005 kHz. The signal was broadcast from a 100-kW transmitter in the Britz suburb of Berlin, Germany, using an essentially non-directional antenna.RIAS began operations as the wired station Drahtfunk im amerikanischen Sektor on 7 February 1946 and began its radio life on 5 September 1946. On 1 January 1994, RIAS was merged into DeutschlandRadio Berlin. The recording starts with a program of jazz music in progress. Initially, there is a heterodyne of approximately 520 Hz from a co-channel transmitter. At about the 12m:30s mark of the recording, the heterodyne disappears. This might be related to receiver adjustments. At the 15m:50s mark in the recording, station identification is given as "RIAS, Berlin" followed by "Nachrichten" (news). This is followed by autobahn news (preceded by the alert tone) and the program "Nightline." At about the 22m:30S mark of the recording, a new heterodyne appears with a frequency of about 850 Hz but it lasts for only about 30 seconds. This is during a program of pop music. At about the 40m mark of the recoding, the Bow Bells interval signal of the BBC World Service begins in advance of a co-channel transmission to South America from a transmitter at Ascension followed by station identification and the Lilliburlero signature tune.In the audio file, the 520-Hz heterodyne has been notched out and the audio levels somewhat normalized to make listening a bit more enjoyable. Reception of the broadcast was fairly good apart from the heterodynes. The broadcast was received in Hanwell, New Brunswick, Canada, using a JRC NRD-535D receiver operated with a 6 kHz IF filter and with a random-length wire antenna draped around the listening room. Thanks to Wolfgang Bueschel for help with documenting this recording.

This week I'm delighted to bring you a chat with someone who grabs life by both hands, former footballer Darius Charles.Darius retired from professional footballer just a matter of weeks ago after playing professionally for sixteen years for the likes of Wycombe Wanderers, Brentford and most recently, AFC Wimbledon. We talk about how he feels about that and also the journey football has taken him on personally. His mum had him when she was sixteen years old and Darius has had plenty of obstacles over his life that he has managed to overcome and use as the energy he brings to everyone he meets. We had this conversation in a recording studio close to where Darius spent a large part of his childhood, in Hanwell, West London. Darius is currently being followed by a documentary crew and our conversation in the studio will be part of a programme called 'Sidelines', which will be out later in the year.I got to know Darius about a year ago and since then I've always enjoyed and looked forward to every conversation we have ever had. As he says himself, he's a very fiery character and I think by the end of this conversation you will see how he is using that desire in a positive way, a passion that will change lives. We talk about role models, creating opportunities and being self-sufficient, the fear of your career always being one manager's decision away from ending as well as dealing with being loaned out and Injured. Southern Macabre
Haunted, Abandoned Mental Hospital in Alabama

Hey, y'all, and welcome to Southern Macabre. I'm Aeryn and I am so glad that you could join me today. I hope you're having a fantastic week so far. Mine has been good. My birthday was last week and one of our cats surprised us with four kittens. We're working on naming them since most people who want cats already have them so we're figuring we have four new cats. I'm hoping to convince the kids to let me name one Edgar Allen Poe, but only my oldest child really appreciates his work. Anyway. Today we're going to talk about mental health and I'm going to tell you about a hospital in Tuscaloosa, Alabama. This episode took two weeks for me to research and write, but I think it's worth the wait. Also, I feel it's important to tell y'all about mental health treatment beginning in the Victorian era (1880s to about 1910s) and how it changed through later decades. You may be shocked by what I'm going to tell you, but you will find sources to all of this information on the website. To start off, mental hospitals were once called asylums. It was supposed to give the feeling of a rest or break from one's mental illness and during the Victorian era it actually was. I was surprised to learn that in the late 1800s most patients were well cared for in the UK and in America. William Ellis was the first superintendent of Hanwell Asylum in London and he believed mental illness could be cured through meaningful work. His successor, John Connolly, introduced the idea of a no restraint system at Hanwell. These two men likely influenced Dr. Peter Bryce, a twenty-seven-year-old psychiatrist from South Carolina. He had studied mental health in Europe and then worked in both New Jersey and South Carolina before being hired as the first superintendent of The Alabama Insane Hospital when it opened in 1861. Robert Jemison, Jr. donated his estate to the state of Alabama to build the state-run mental hospital. He was a senator and he was convinced to make the generous donation by Dorothea Dix, an advocate for the mentally ill. In the early years, African American patients were housed in a barn loft. All of the patients worked to provide food along with clean clothes and living quarters. This was considered part of their treatment and all patients were encouraged to spend time outside. The Jemison Centre was built in 1939 for African American patients and it housed patients until 1977. Dr. Bryce lived with his wife, Ellen, in the mental hospital and even ate with the patients in the hospital's dining room. He dealt with budget cuts due to the Civil War, which shifted the patients working as part of their therapy to them working to make sure no one starved. His colleagues didn't understand his model of treating patients with kindness and respect, viewing the practice as primitive and old-fashioned. This must have been infuriating to him after seeing how well it worked. While Dr. Bryce cared for patients medically, Mrs. Bryce beautified the grounds as well as the inside of the hospital. She agreed with her husband that the way patients were treated and their surroundings played a role in their ability to get better. They even brought in birds for long-term patients to care for and all to enjoy as part of their therapy. Sadly, Dr. Bryce died of kidney disease in 1892. The hospital was renamed in his honor in 1900. His wife, Ellen, passed away in 1929. They're buried on the grounds of the hospital they devoted their lives to for so many years. I can't help but wonder if they may still be there caring for patients unable or unwilling to leave, even in death. There isn't any information on Bryce Hospital after his death until the lawsuit in 1970, we'll get there in a moment, so I'll tell you about “treatment” in the United States in general. I can't prove or disprove that any of these things happened at Bryce Hospital or the Jemison Centre, but the likelihood is high. --- Ad --- Sigmund Freud came on the scene in 1886. He worked in Vienna, Austria, but was popular around the world prior to his death in 1939. He believed in talking to patients, but he also prescribed cocaine as a stimulant and pain killer. For a brief period of time, he believed it would cure a morphine addiction, but then his friend died from a morphine overdose about three years later. Go figure. The 1930s introduced electroshock therapy in mental hospitals around the world. It was, and still is, effective. Today it is performed while the patient has been given a muscle relaxer and anesthesia, to keep them from moving and feeling pain. Patients from the 1930s to 1970s were shocked to cause seizures which cured depression. As stupid as that sounds, there is documentation that it actually worked, but patients lost some of their long-term memories. Psychosurgeries, like lobotomies, became popular in the 1940s. This was where part of the frontal lobe of the brain was damaged or removed in order to cure certain mental illnesses. --- Everything came to an end when Bryce Mental Hospital's sins were revealed in October 1970. Ricky Wyatt was a fifteen-year-old boy who was acting out; he did not have a mental illness. Due to his behavior, he was sent to live at Bryce by his probation officer and aunt who had custody. His aunt worked at Bryce when he was sent to live there, but was laid off with many of the other workers. This was when she first said anything about feces covering the walls, nurses betting on fights between patients, etc. He wasn't the only person who didn't need to be there either. Sweet Aunt Betty burned the biscuits the past five Sundays in a row? Send her to Bryce! Maw Maw keeps misplacing her car keys? They've got a room for up there! Daddy being a general pain in the rear?  He can go, too. The only requirement was a letter from a doctor, which was easy enough to get. The lawsuit was called Wyatt vs Stickney and it led to federal regulation of mental institutions across the United States. It was found that the state was only giving 50 cents per patient per day for food, clothing, and other necessities. There were 5, 200 patients and only one nurse per 250. A reporter said that the hospital reminded him of the conditions he had witnessed in German concentration camps! He claimed (and I believe him after doing research) that buckets of boiling water were poured on him to get him out of bed and he witnessed other patients being abused many times. I couldn't find too many details, but maybe that's not a bad thing? --- Bryce State Hospital has been closed since 2014 and was sold to the University of Alabama to be used as a pair of museums, one on mental health history in the state and the other of the history of the University of Alabama. They were supposed to be completed by 2020, but the buildings on the old Jemison plantation are derelict and condemned today. Of course, the buildings are haunted, in case you were wondering if this really was a paranormal episode or just a dark tale of mental health history. The history is what lead to the property and buildings being haunted. There was so much mistreatment and so many people who suffered at Bryce who were completely sane (or as sane as a person can be) and didn't need to be there. People have been scratched by unseen entities, heard screams coming from empty corridors, etc. There are several YouTube videos about Bryce and the place is creepy during the day. That could be due to decay, but I wouldn't go out there even if it was allowed. A small group of people who went there said they felt a cold spot and then noticed a clean spot on the floor with a shoe print in the middle. If you watch any of the YouTube videos, there aren't any clean spots in any of these facilities. Also, there are cemeteries out there. Plural. Most aren't marked and the documents have been lost. The first recorded burial was in 1861, but most from 1861 to 1922 are gone forever. It's estimated that over 1,000 people are buried on the premises, but only 554 are listed on Find a Grave. That's a lot of potential souls, am I right? --- I just found out about this as I was going to record, but there's also an old nursing home back in there that was called S.D. Allen. It's also said to be haunted. Visitors (trespassers, really) have heard what sounds like a mattress or a body being drug across the floor. --- I hope y'all enjoyed today's episode. I'm sorry it took so long to research; I hope you can tell how much time I dedicated to this episode. I'll confess that part of that time was wasted because I didn't realize how many buildings were out there so a lot of my information was incorrect. Some may still be, but I did my best and that's what matters. At least I hope it is. Come back on Friday. I'm not sure what I'm going to tell y'all about yet, but it'll be good. I hope y'all have a wonderful day and I will talk to y'all tomorrow. God bless, y'all! --- Credits https://www.sciencemuseum.org.uk/objects-and-stories/medicine/victorian-mental-asylum https://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-7456315/Inside-haunted-ruined-remains-Alabama-State-Hospital-Insanes-Jemison-Centre.html https://news.ua.edu/2015/02/the-legacy-of-mental-health-pioneer-peter-bryce/ https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bryce_Hospital https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sigmund_Freud https://timeline.com/lucille-schreiber-forced-sterilization-e3987d304dc0 https://www.findagrave.com/cemetery/26644/bryce-hospital-cemetery https://adap.ua.edu/ricky-wyatt.html

The broadcast was primarily in German with some greetings in English and Filipino as well as German. Several songs in English, too. News bulletins preceded the first program segment and the second hour of the second program segment for a few minutes. In addition to being carried on the NDR Info and NDR Info Spezial networks, the broadcast was transmitted around the world on shortwave using transmitters in Nauen (NAU), Germany; Moosbrunn (MOS), Austria; Issoudun (ISS), France; and Gavar (ERV), Armenia; and was organized by Media Broadcast. The schedule for 1900-2100 UTC was: 6030 kHz ERV 100 kW / 305 deg to West/Central Europe6080 kHz NAU 125 kW / 250 deg to Northern Atlantic9570 kHz MOS 100 kW / 115 deg to Indian Ocean East9740 kHz NAU 125 kW / 130 deg to Indian Ocean West9800 kHz ISS 250 kW / 148 deg to Waters near South Africa11650 kHz ISS 250 kW / 195 deg to Southern Atlanticand for 2100-2300 UTC:6145 kHz NAU 125 kW / 250 deg to Northern Atlantic6155 kHz ERV 100 kW / 305 deg to West/Central Europe9590 kHz ISS 250 kW / 148 deg to Waters near South Africa9675 kHz MOS 100 kW / 115 deg to Indian Ocean East9740 kHz NAU 125 kW / 130 deg to Indian Ocean West9830 kHz ISS 250 kW / 195 deg to Southern AtlanticThe first recording is primarily of the transmission on the frequency of 6030 kHz between about 19:00 and 21:00 UTC although for the first minute or so the weaker frequency of 11650 kHz was used and for the couple of minutes or so, 6080 kHz was used. The frequency of 6080 kHz could not be used for most of the two hours due to strong co-channel interference from a special Vatican Radio broadcast. The second recording is of the transmission between about 21:00 and 23:00 UTC on the frequency of 6145 kHz.The transmissions were received outdoors on a Tecsun PL-880 receiver with a Tecsun AN-03L 7-metre wire antenna in Hanwell (just outside Fredericton), New Brunswick, Canada, in AM mode with 2.3 kHz RF filtering. Reception was quite good for the most part for both two-hour segments although there was co-channel interference from a digital broadcast of Radio Romania International for the last few minutes of the first two-hour segment necessitating the switch to 6080 kHz.

After looking at the main castles of a county, it can be good to dip in to what history is available for some smaller ones in the area, and Oxfordshire definitely has some worthy candidates! This episode looks at a number of castles in Oxfordshire, including Broughton, Deddington, Shirburn, Hanwell, and Grey's Court. Between them, they cover almost one thousand years of ghosts and skeletons- with some names you should recognise if you're up to date on your Podcastles! Normally we only include castles that still exist today, but Oxfordshire has so many castles that are now just ruins and mounds that we had to make a few exceptions. This is the second part in a mini series of podcasts looking at Blessed are the Weird, by Jacob Nordby. Last week we started by looking at what it means to be a blessed weirdian. This episode is titled 'Misfits', as we continue to think about ways in which gentle rebels and creative misfits find themselves naturally placed in the margins of the mainstream. Are you ready to embrace the joy of not fitting in? All Kinds of Weird I've been puzzling over a question about different types of misfit and weird. And this was almost serendipitously augmented by a trip to the cinema to watch Joker. The day before I had read a rather apt quote by G.K. Chesterton... "Once I remember walking with a prosperous publisher, who made a remark which I had often heard before; it is, indeed, almost a motto of the modern world. Yet I had heard it once too often, and I saw suddenly that there was nothing in it. The publisher said of somebody, "That man will get on; he believes in himself..." ...I said to him, "Shall I tell you where the men are who believe most in themselves? For I can tell you. I know of men who believe in themselves more colossally than Napoleon or Caesar. I know where flames the fixed star of certainty and success. And I can guide you to the thrones of the Super-men. The men who really believe in themselves are all in lunatic asylums." ...He said mildly that there were a good many men after all who believed in themselves and who were not in lunatic asylums. "Yes, there are," I retorted, "and you of all men ought to know them... Actors who can't act believe in themselves; and debtors who won't pay. It would be much truer to say that a man will certainly fail, because he believes in himself. Complete self-confidence is not merely a sin; complete self-confidence is a weakness. Believing utterly in one's self is a hysterical and superstitious belief like believing in Joanna Southcott: the man who has it has 'Hanwell' written on his face as plain as it is written on that omnibus." - G.K. Chesterton The Madness of Self-Belief Hanwell was referring to 'St Barnard's Hospital'. *Oddly enough, I discovered that Hanwell was used as a location to film the 1989 Batman film in which Jack Nicholson played the Joker. A funny yet unimportant coincidence. I have been reflecting on 'weirdos' and 'misfits'. How the words are used, almost interchangeably with ideas such as 'aloof', 'introvert', 'loner'. We often see them in reports about the lone figure attacker who 'didn't fit in'. I've felt a sense of responsibility to distinguish these ideas. Because we're talking about different ways of relating to oneself and the world around you. One is a natural, heart and soul full way of experiencing. The gifts of sensitivity, gentleness, and introversion, as a natural way of feeling, energising, and relating to the world. The other is resentful, full of bitterness and driven by a failed desire to fit in with some aspired external group, force, or way of life. This is where Joker sits. An aspiring comedian who doesn't understand comedy. Who isn't funny. And who can't stand being laughed at. But who has an unmatched self-belief in his own comedic power. Growing in bitterness at the world he can't fit into. Believing in nothing other than his desire to 'give people what they deserve' by inflicting pain and death. In contrast to some peoples' reactions to the film, I found nothing sympathetic in the character of Arthur Fleck. He is a person who evokes pity, not understanding. A tragic figure who rapidly descends into a bitterly narcissistic, ego centric rage. There was nothing relatable or sympathetic in the character for me. Just a grim emptiness. The Gift of Not Fitting In Jacob Nordby suggests that, as creative misfits, we can see not fitting in as a gift. He says we were "given the ability to see things differently from other people." And that even though "the price you pay feels high,

His parents, both entertainers in the Music Hall tradition, separated before he was three. The 1891 census shows his mother, Hannah, living with Charlie and his older brother in Barlow Street, Walworth. As a child he lived with his mother in various addresses in and around Kennington Road in Lambeth, such as 3 Pownall Terrace, Chester Street and 39 Methley Street. His father Charles Chaplin Senior, who was of Roma ancestry, was an alcoholic and had little contact with his son, though Chaplin and his brother briefly lived with him and his mistress, whose name was Louise, at 287 Kennington Road (which address is now ornamented with a plaque commemorating Chaplin's residence here) when his mother was on a bout of mental illness and was admitted to the Cane Hill Asylum at Coulsdon. Louise sent the young Chaplin to Kennington Road school. Chaplin's father died when Charlie was twelve, leaving him and his older half-brother, Sydney Chaplin, in the sole care of his mother. A serious condition in the larynx ended their mother’s career as a singer and her first crisis was when she was performing "La Cantina" at the Aldershot theatre, mainly frequented by rioters and soldiers, one of the worst places to perform. Lily was badly injured by the objects the audience mercilessly threw at her and she was booed off the stage. Backstage, she cried and argued with her manager. In the meantime, Chaplin went on stage alone and started singing a very well known tune at that time (Jack Jones). At the early age of five, he attracted a constant stream of coins that the very same difficult and ruthless audience hurled at the talented artist, born before their very eyes. Hannah Chaplin suffered from schizophrenia, and was again admitted to the Cane Hill Asylum. Chaplin had to be left in the workhouse at Lambeth, London, moving after several weeks to the Central London District School for paupers in Hanwell. The young Chaplin brothers forged a close relationship to survive. They gravitated to the Music Hall while still very young, and both proved to have considerable natural stage talent. Chaplin's early years of desperate poverty were a great influence on the characters and themes of his films and in later years he would re-visit the scenes of his childhood deprivation in Lambeth. Unknown to Charlie and Sydney until years later, they had a half-brother through their mother, Wheeler Dryden, who was raised abroad by his father. He was later reconciled with the family, and worked for Chaplin at his Hollywood studio. Chaplin's mother died in 1928 in Hollywood, seven years after being brought to the U.S. by her sons. Although baptised in the Church of England, Chaplin was an agnostic for most of his life. [2]
