In Episode 49 of the America the Bilingual podcast, Steve introduces seven bilinguals whose new language came alive for them when they found where in their lives it should live. Lorna Auerbach is one of them. She had struggled as a young student trying to learn a second language. But later, as an adult, she blossomed when she connected her “where” to the work she was passionate about—and found the language that she really wanted to learn. Father Chuck Durante is another. A Catholic priest, he had abandoned his plans to minor in Spanish when he was in college. But when he joined the seminary, he had the motivation he needed: his future parishioners. You’ll also hear about leading international correspondents and authors Anand Gopal and Evan Osnos, who knew that the only way to truly get the story was to first get the language. Calvin Sims, a longtime overseas correspondent for The New York Times, also became fluent in both Spanish and Japanese for just this reason. And his bilingualism has taken him beyond the Times, to two other unexpected “wheres”—International House in New York City, and CNN Worldwide. Enjoy hearing this audiobook chapter of America’s Bilingual Century by Steve Leveen. You’re listening to Chapter 17, narrated by the award-winning Sean Pratt.

Politicon: How The Heck Are We Gonna Get Along with Clay Aiken
Clay is joined by journalist, businessman, and author Richard Lui to discuss the state of the nation in 2021 and how we can begin to come together as one people. Is apolitical selfishness or making the effort to reach out and sit down to talk with those who disagree with us the answer? It’s a difficult question, but with small steps, intention and good will, we might be able to take the advice of Richard and find the way forward for us, our communities, and our country-- no matter which side of the aisle we're on. What do you think?Guest:Richard Lui Richard Lui is a thought leader at the intersection of media, social impact, and storytelling. He is a content and digital-social specialist with 30 years of experience in network television, technology, and business.Currently, he is a journalist and news anchor for MSNBC and NBC News. Before that, he was news anchor at CNN Worldwide, where he became the first Asian American male to anchor a daily national news broadcast in the U.S. Most recently, Lui reported on the ground on the Paris and San Bernardino Terror Attacks and in Ferguson and Baltimore during heightened racial unrest. For 15 years Lui’s reporting has focused on politics, covering every U.S. national election since 2004. He has interviewed hundreds of politicians, from Detroit Mayor to U.S. President. He has been a contributing columnist for USA Today, Politico, Seattle Times, Detroit Free Press, Huffington Post, and others. Lui is a Policy Fellow at UC Riverside.Lui’s passion for politics started in the 70s, when he debated California’s controversial Proposition 13 on bus rides to school. His interest turned into a job at the age of 19: campaign manager for San Francisco College Board incumbent Alan Wong. After the election, Lui returned to college. His plan was to write on policy and the affairs of state, subscribing to the Washington Post when it had to be mailed to the west coast. In the 1990s, Lui reported for news radio KALX during a unique time in California politics. Two of his first stories as a journalist were Dianne Feinstein’s first successful U.S. Senate campaign and the Rodney King verdict and riots.Later in the 2000s, Lui reported from Asia during an increasingly heated political climate. Two Muslim countries in Southeast Asia transformed: Indonesia’s Sukarno family was defeated after rule spanning over half a century; and Malaysia’s prime minister, after almost a quarter of a century handed over power. Lui also reported on Taiwan’s controversial election between pro- and anti- China political parties. He was at Channel NewsAsia, an English-only news network in 20 countries and territories.Lui is also a technologist with a wide-reaching business career that started in the 1990s. He launched six technology brands over three technology cycles, most recently an artificial intelligence company in Silicon Valley in 2016. He is ranked globally in the top 1% of social media users by Twitter Counter. Business Insider named Lui one of 21 careers to watch alongside Warren Buffett and Sheryl Sandberg. And more lightheartedly, he’s been ranked three years in a row by Mediaite as one of the “50 Sexiest in TV News.”Lui is a Policy Fellow at the University of California Riverside where he explores the cross of public policy and media, UN Spokesperson for the HeForShe Campaign, one of 100 US State Department Traveling Speakers, and ambassador for NGOs focusing on gender equality and human trafficking.Lui graduated from City College of San Francisco with A.S. Honors in Math and Science, UC Berkeley with a B.A. Honors Rhetoric, and the Ross School of Business at the University of Michigan with an MBA. Globalization over the last 100+ years has been responsible for many of the most important advances in western civilization. Though, in the last 25 years, globalization fueled by an information/technological revolution has created greater inequality with a priority placed on more skilled work. “What's happening is the higher and higher value stuff is being made digitally and operates in a digital world, and the lower and lower value stuff is the physical world… It's more technological than it is globalization and the pandemic has massively exacerbated it.” ————————————————————————— To learn more about this episode, including podcast transcripts and show notes, visit *salt.org/talks* ( http://salt.org/talks ) Moderated by Anthony Scaramucci.

Meet Carolyn Disbrow, a Senior Director with CNN Worldwide. Her 20 year career has taken her behind the scenes of projects like The New York Times Best Seller Anthony Bourdain Remembered, the CNN Special "CNN Heroes," and other milestones in the media realm.
Brian Stelter sits down with CNN Worldwide president Jeff Zucker at the CITIZEN by CNN conference in New York City. They discuss the network's relationship with President Trump; decisions about whether to air Trump events; and a baseless lawsuit threat from one of Trump's lawyers. Zucker also defends the hiring of "Trump voices;" discusses the possibility of hiring Shep Smith; and addresses his interest in running for public office someday.
Outraged over disclosures by Project Veritas that Jeff Zucker, president of CNN Worldwide, is using his CNN network to attack and bring down the Trump presidency, Donald Trump’s reelection campaign sent a scathing letter to Zucker and his attorney on Wednesday. When it was released to the public on Friday the letter revealed that it charged them and the network with violating the Lanham Act. Read the article here!

The other great renaissance of black culture, influence, and glamour burst forth joyfully in what may seem an unlikely place—Pittsburgh, PA—from the 1920s through the 1950s. Today black Pittsburgh is known as the setting for August Wilson’s famed plays about noble but doomed working-class strivers. But this community once had an impact on American history that rivaled the far larger black worlds of Harlem and Chicago. It published the most widely read black newspaper in the country, urging black voters to switch from the Republican to the Democratic Party and then rallying black support for World War II. It fielded two of the greatest baseball teams of the Negro Leagues and introduced Jackie Robinson to the Brooklyn Dodgers. Pittsburgh was the childhood home of jazz pioneers Billy Strayhorn, Billy Eckstine, Earl Hines, Mary Lou Williams, and Erroll Garner; Hall of Fame slugger Josh Gibson—and August Wilson himself. Some of the most glittering figures of the era were changed forever by the time they spent in the city, from Joe Louis and Satchel Paige to Duke Ellington and Lena Horne. Mark Whitaker’s Smoketown is a captivating portrait of this unsung community and a vital addition to the story of black America. It depicts how ambitious Southern migrants were drawn to a steel-making city on a strategic river junction; how they were shaped by its schools and a spirit of commerce with roots in the Gilded Age; and how their world was eventually destroyed by industrial decline and urban renewal. Mark Whitaker is the author of the critically acclaimed memoir, My Long Trip Home, and Smoketown. The former managing editor of CNN Worldwide, he was previously the Washington bureau chief for NBC News and a reporter and editor at Newsweek, where he rose to become the first African-American leader of a national newsweekly. Steven M. Greer, MD is Founder of The Disclosure Project, The Center for the Study of Extraterrestrial Intelligence (CSETI) and Sirius Technology Advanced Research, LLC (STAR LLC). Father of the Disclosure movement, he presided over the groundbreaking National Press Club Disclosure Event in May, 2001. Over 20 military, government, intelligence and corporate witnesses presented compelling testimony regarding the existence of extraterrestrial life forms visiting the planet, and the reverse engineering of the energy and propulsion systems of these craft. Over one billion people heard of the press conference through the original webcast and on subsequent media coverage on BBC, CNN, CNN Worldwide, Voice of America, Pravda, Chinese media, and media outlets throughout Latin America. The webcast had 250,000 people waiting online- the largest webcast in the history of the National Press Club at that time. A lifetime member of Alpha Omega Alpha, the nation's most prestigious medical honor society, Dr. Greer has now retired as an emergency physician to work with CSETI, The Disclosure Project and STAR,LLC. During part of his career, he was chairman of the Department of Emergency Medicine at Caldwell Memorial Hospital in North Carolina. He is the author of five insightful books and multiple DVDs on the UFO/ET subject. The newest being “Unacknowledged” the companion book to his new film that is full of explosive testimony. He teaches groups throughout the world how to make peaceful contact with extraterrestrial civilizations, and continues to research bringing truly alternative energy sources out to the public. Dr. Greer has studied the Sanskrit Vedas extensively and has been teaching mantra meditation for over 30 years. His newest documentary, “Unacknowledged” premiered April 24, 2017 in Los Angeles It was the #1 Documentary in 2017 for iTunes. In it Dr. Greer presents brand new, top-secret evidence supporting Extraterrestrial contact including witness testimony, classified documents and UFO footage while also exploring the consequences of ruthlessly enforcing such secrecy. The viewer learns that a silent coup d'état occurred dating back to the 1950s and that Congress, the President and other world leaders have been sidelined by criminal elements within the Military-Industrial-Financial complex. Dr .Greer personally briefed among others: James R. Woolsey when he was sitting CIA Director for President Bill Clinton, General Patrick Hughes when he was Director of the Defense Intelligence Agency and Admiral Tom Wilson when he was Head of Intelligence for the Joint Chiefs of Staff. Dr. Greer has been seen and heard by millions world-wide on CBS, the BBC, The Discovery Channel, the History channel, The Ancient Aliens series, Thrive and through many news outlets worldwide. Links To Dr. Greer's Work: ================================================================ Quotes by Dr. Greer “Nobody has asserted that there is an actual threat to humanity from these objects: It seems to me that any civilization capable of routine interstellar travel could terminate our civilization in a nanosecond if that was their intent. That we are still breathing the free air of Earth is abundant testimony to the non-hostile nature of these ET civilizations.” “That the official government—and the official keepers of truth in the media and science—have been deceived for this long is a tribute to the sophistication, depth, breadth, and ubiquity of a secret program unparalleled in history…. It seems that the effectiveness of the secrecy is itself related to the stunning, incredulity of the nature of the secrecy. Put another way, the whys, hows, and wherefores of these secret projects are so bizarre and unbelievable that they provide their own best cover; no one would believe it even if they came upon it. It is absolutely over the top.” “It isn't going to be the end of ‘the' world; it is the end of ‘an old world' and the simultaneous establishment of a new one. We are already in the early stages of the golden era of the human race—one that is going to go for 500,000 years…. Spaceship Earth needs to be guided through this period and be firmly established as the civilization it's intended to be. There are extraterrestrial civilizations standing ready to assist, and at a certain point things will change very rapidly. This transformation isn't going to happen by itself. We humans are going to have to guide it and facilitate it. But we're not going to be alone. The destiny of the human race and Earth has never been alone. It's never been without assistance, and it's never been in doubt. There's no doubt about what our future and our destiny is going to be. The only question is how we're going to extricate ourselves from the current situation and establish our world firmly on the path of peace and justice. This is the planet of free will. Our free will has to be applied in order for this transformation to happen. This is the lesson we have to learn. And as soon as we all pull together and use our free will to make this happen, it will happen…. The Earth and humanity are ready to blossom. And it is not just the springtime of Earth. It is the springtime of the entire cosmos.” –Steven Greer, M.D., Hidden Truth, Forbidden Knowledge, pgs. 226-227 “Earth is under a type of cosmic quarantine. It is known that we are not yet socially and spiritually evolved enough to go into space with such advanced technologies—so our wings are clipped for now. The key to our being welcome in the cosmos is peace. There are entire worlds that don't even have a concept of war that are highly developed and are at or beyond our level of technological achievement. So a world like ours would be enormously risky to turn loose on the cosmos; we are just still too violent and primitive…. Our ability to utilize all the technologies we have developed covertly has been truncated by extraterrestrial enforcement of a type of quarantine. They [the Ets] are charged with protecting the universe from a species whose technologies have way outstripped their social and spiritual development. This is manifest universal justice. It would be the height of insanity and folly to turn militaristic humans loose on the cosmos! Neil Armstrong was over-heard saying as we landed on the moon, there are numerous extraterrestrial vehicles on the crater, watching us and that we were essentially warned off the moon…. But, if we go out into space, united and in peace, the universe is an open book for us.” –Steven Greer, M.D., Hidden Truth, Forbidden Knowledge, pg. 254 “Injustice will give way to justice, and poverty to abundance, and from destruction we will go into a time of beautiful and perfect architecture and a perfect and enlightened social order…. As time goes on, there will no distinction between the spiritually enlightened ones, and those who we consider for political or leadership positions. You won't be allowed to be a leader if you are not enlightened.” –Steven Greer, M.D., Hidden Truth, Forbidden Knowledge, pgs. 264-265 “In the near future, every person will arise to the responsibility of independently seeking the truth, reading, studying, meditating, and praying for their own spiritual development…. We will eventually evolve a universal spirituality. –Steven Greer, M.D., Hidden Truth, Forbidden Knowledge, pgs. 306-307 “The major theme for the next several hundred thousand years will be the establishment of a divine-civilization—a civilization that is on Earth in a state of spiritual enlightenment…. There is so much. All the wondrous worlds—all the fine celestial realms—will be opened up to the knowledge of people, even as they dwell on the Earth. And the Earth will become one of the great jewels in the crown of the entire cosmos. This is the destiny of Earth and the destiny of humanity. The early stages of peace on Earth will be paralleled by early, open contact with extraterrestrial civilizations. There is a threshold we must first cross: universal peace.” –Steven Greer, M.D., Hidden Truth, Forbidden Knowledge, pgs. 315-316 Steven M.
