This month we are reflecting on tone policing and the angry black woman stereotype. Our guest this month, Odelia Djoe used to stand up for herself against racial comments from her classmates when she was younger. Unfortunately this was interpreted as behavioral problems by her teachers, a phenomenon that is common for a lot of black girls even when they are just being “normal” kids and teenagers. According to a study by the New York Times, black girls are over five times more likely than white girls to be suspended at least once from school. This is the beginning of the experience of tone policing for a lot of black women and it follows black girls throughout their lives, manifesting as the "angry black woman" stereotype. A lot of black women, from Michelle Obama to Serena Williams to all of us have battled this stereotype in many ways. It ranges from microaggressive comments about how loud we laugh to being told to calm down in moments of passionate contributions. The angry black woman stereotype is one of the many reasons why a lot of black women feel like they cannot show up their full selves in predominantly white spaces. This episode, the ladies sit down to tackle the infamous stereotype of the “Angry Black Woman”. They tackle the dissection of the angry Black woman’s history to your favorite reality tv character. Is angry the correct adjective to label a woman? History: Amos & Andy, originally a Radio show (first mentioned in the 1930’s then turned television sitcom early 1950’s) was first introduced and created by two white writers who later acted as the two character in black face. As the show gained more success, black actors were used in their place. Sapphire Stevens played by Ernestine Wade was one of our first introduction to the angry black woman in film. El pianista y compositor cubano René Touzet, autor de más de quinientas canciones y boleros inmortales como La noche de anoche, Estuve pensando y Me contaron de ti,inició temprano su carrera musical. Estudió en La Habana con los maestros Pérez Sentenat y Joaquín Nin, y a la edad de 16 años ganó el prestigioso primer premio del conservatorio Falcón. Muy pronto creó su propia orquesta, con la que se presentó durante años en el hotel Nacional de La Habana, hasta que en 1946 se unió a la de Enrique Madriguera en Estados Unidos. Enseguida se trasladó a Hollywood y creó su propio combo, los Cha Cha Rhythm Boys, con el que grabó varios discos.
