Radio 3's ‘Sound of…' marks the 90th anniversary of one of the most famous of all recording studios, London's Abbey Road. Presenters Matthew Sweet and Louise Blain team up for a special programme for Christmas to mark Abbey Road's important and illustrious history of making music for film - and more recently for the gaming world. Together they tour the building, taking a keen interest on the legendary Studio 1 - meeting some of the people who have shaped soundtrack recordings there. The programme is lavishly illustrated with music from the Abbey Road catalogue. Abbey Road began its venture into film in the early 80s and quickly attracted the likes of Miklós Rózsa, John Williams and Stephen Spielberg, Jerry Goldsmith, and James Horner etc. It continues to play a major role in music for international film. One of the first significant scores to be recorded there was Raiders of the Lost Ark, which was soon followed with prestigious catalogue of titles: The Return of the Jedi, The Last Emperor, RoboCop, Aliens, The Lord of the Rings and The Hobbit, Skyfall, Gravity, The Shape of Water, Black Panther and so on. Matthew reflects both on the history, in conversation with engineers Merik Stiles and Ken Townsend, and with Hollywood composer James Newton Howard (The Hunger Games, The Dark Knight, Fantastic Beasts) who has recently been recording there. Meanwhile, Louise talks with Isabel Garvey about links with the world of Gaming. Titles such as Final Fantasy and Call of Duty have passed through Abbey Road's doors. She meets composer Ilan Eshkeri who rectory recorded ‘Ghost of Tsushima' there, and with cellist Caroline Dale, who explains some of the challenges that face the musician working on soundtracks.

Ilan Eshkeri is the featured guest on this Score to Screen podcast. The award-winning composer highlights the importance of narrative and story when it comes to crafting score music. Eshkeri provides an in depth look at his soundtrack to the documentary series, A Perfect Planet as well as the admired video game, Ghost of Tsushima. A Perfect Planet is a unique fusion of blue chip natural history and earth science that explains how our living planet operates. This five-part series shows how the forces of nature drive, shape and support Earth's great diversity of wildlife. It takes us on a stunning visual journey, from lands drenched by the Indian monsoon to the slopes of fiery Hawaiian volcanoes, from the tidal islands of the Bahamas to the frozen wastes of Ellesmere Island. From Arctic wolves prowling moonlit landscapes in winter, to frozen wood frogs magically thawing back to life in spring; from the vampire finches of the Galapagos who drink the blood of seabirds, to the African flamingos who gather in their thousands every year in a vast volcanic lake to breed. The video game, Ghost of Tsushima, takes place in the late 13th century, when the Mongol empire has laid waste to entire nations along their campaign to conquer the East. Tsushima Island is all that stands between mainland Japan and a massive Mongol invasion fleet led by the ruthless and cunning general, Khotun Khan. As the island burns in the wake of the first wave of the Mongol assault, samurai warrior Jin Sakai stands as one of the last surviving members of his clan. He is resolved to do whatever it takes, at any cost, to protect his people and reclaim his home. He must set aside the traditions that have shaped him as a warrior to forge a new path, the path of the Ghost, and wage an unconventional war for the freedom of Tsushima. Ilan Eshkeri is an award-winning composer, artist, songwriter, producer and creator. Eshkeri's work is performed in concert halls, theaters, galleries, on film and television and in video games. Recent projects include A Perfect Planet, his fourth collaboration with the legendary naturalist David Attenborough and The White Crow which he worked on with Ralph Fiennes. Both followed the creation of a ballet, Narcissus and Echo, choreographed by famed dancer Sergei Polunin with set designs by David LaChapelle and a ballet commission from Rambert Dance Company. Eshkeri has collaborated with Burberry on a landmark fashion show, where he composed and conducted a choral symphonic suite, Reliquary, which then reached No. 1 in the UK classical chart. Before this, he worked with astronaut Tim Peake and the European Space Agency on a film documenting his mission to the International Space Station. He continues his collaboration with Tim Peake and ESA with his spellbinding show Space Station Earth, last performed in Stockholm to an audience of 10,000. Eshkeri's many creative partnerships include artists such as Annie Lennox, David Gilmour, Sinead O'Connor, KT Tunstall, Tom Odell, Ash and The Cinematic Orchestra. Amongst his extensive catalogue of film and television are multiple Oscar & BAFTA winning films, such as Still Alice, Stardust and Shaun The Sheep.  The Score to Screen podcast series is produced and hosted by Crossover Media's Max Horowitz. Music featured in the programme is taken from the nominees for the Best Gaming Music category, which are: GHOST OF TSUSHIMA by Ilan Eshkeri, Shigeru Umebayashi, Peter Scaturro; HADES by Darren Korb; THE LAST OF US PART II by Gustavo Santaolalla, Mac Quayle, Scott Hanau; MARVEL'S SPIDER-MAN: MILES MORALES by John Paesano, Scott Hanau, Alex Hackford; ORI AND THE WILL OF THE WISPS by Gareth Coker; and SACKBOY: A BIG ADVENTURE by Jay Waters, Joe Thwaites, Joanna Skorupa. Nominees for the Game of the Year include ANIMAL CROSSING: NEW HORIZONS which has proved such a hit during a year of lockdown. Louise looks at these, and more, listing the winners. In Louise's words: "Gaming was such a lifeline for so many people over 2020 and the 2021 British Academy Games Awards nominations reflect that. I don't think many of us would feel quite as connected to friends if we hadn't spent months fishing together in Animal Crossing: New Horizons or sharing the emotional web of The Last of Us Part 2. Vitally, 2020's games are a clear indicator of the diversity possible in this industry. I can't wait to explore the incredible scores nominated in the Best Gaming Music category. From the heroic joy of Marvel's Spider-Man: Miles Morales to the indie sword-spinning action of Hades, these are soundtracks to define a year like no other."

Even before the pandemic, before we couldn't leave our homes anymore, nature docs were my happy place. But luckily, the Sir David Attenborough Industrial Complex continues apace with BBC One's A Perfect Planet, which just started airing on Discovery Channel's new streaming service, Discovery+. This five-part series explores the planet on which we live, the natural forces that maintain our fragile ecosystems, and the life that lives on it: volcanoes, oceans, sunlight, and so on. If you've seen these kinds of shows, you know not just  Attenborough's reedy, authoritative narration, but the big, bombastic scores that tend to accompany it. But for Ilan Eshkeri, for whom Perfect Planet is his fourth round at scoring an Attenborough-narrated nature doc series, he wanted it to sound a bit different. And that he does; the bigness and sweep are still there, but tempered by more muted, atmospheric orchestrations and the introduction of pop elements like guitars and drums. And the title track, "A Perfect Planet," makes wonderful use of several children's choirs to illustrate the fragility and innocence of the Earth, and the generations we'll be leaving the planet to after we're gone -- an even greater reminder of the need to take direct action on climate change. I had the pleasure of sitting down with Eshkeri, who's scored everything from Stardust to Ghosts of Tsushima, to talk about his motivations behind the project, how his own environmentalism fuels his scoring, and more.

"Ilan Eshkeri is an award winning composer, artist, songwriter, producer and creator. Eshkeri's work is performed in concert halls, theatres, galleries, on film & television and video games; his eclectic body of work is linked by his love of narrative. Ilan is currently creating music for A Perfect Planet, his fourth collaboration with the legendary naturalist David Attenborough. Recently, Ilan and Ralph Fiennes completed their third film together – a biopic about Rudolf Nureyev, ‘The White Crow'. This followed the creation of a ballet ‘Narcissus and Echo', choreographed by famed dancer Sergei Polunin with set designs by David LaChapelle and a ballet commission from Rambert Dance Company. Ilan has collaborated with Burberry on a landmark fashion show, where he composed and conducted a choral symphonic suite, ‘Reliquary', which then reached no.1 in the UK classical chart. Before this, he worked with astronaut Tim Peake and the European Space Agency on a film documenting his mission to the International Space Station. Ilan continues his collaboration with Tim Peake and ESA with his spell-binding show ‘Space Station Earth' last performed in Stockholm to an audience of 10,000. Other performance highlights include a unique concert for thousands in the gardens of the Louvre in Paris, the Royal Albert Hall in London and the Rudolfinum in Prague." NOTE: The quality of Ilan's audio was lower due to technical issues. Huge thanks to our editor, Toivo Kallio for improving it greatly and we hope you still enjoy this episode.

Eshkeri's soundtrack, which features violinist Lisa Batiashvili, is meant to mingle with and compliment the ballet music of Tchaikovsky, which bore an important presence in Nureyev's career.

As subject matter goes, it doesn't get much more rock and roll than Joy Division, New Order, The Happy Mondays, Ian Dury, The Stone Roses, Coldplay and Oasis. But, in one way or another, all these artists have featured in the work of British director Mat Whitecross. As we'll discover, Mat got his big break from Michael Winterbottom while working as a runner on the set 24 Hour Party People, which tells the story of Tony Wilson and Factory Records. The pair went on to direct Road To Gauntanomo together, before he flew solo on the Ian Dury biopic Sex And Drugs And Rock And Roll and Stone Roses-inspired comedy, Spike Island. Coldplay are among his illustrious list of music video clients, while he's also worked with composer Ilan Eshkeri and Tim Wheeler of Ash on more than one project. Indeed, Ilan and Tim have very kindly supplied us with some of their favourite compositions for their film and TV work with Mat, which you'll hear throughout the show. And as if you needed more, there are excerpts from Rael Jones' score for Mat's Oasis documentary Supersonic too, amid the more familiar fare served up by the band themselves.
