On Episode 124 of The Film ‘89 Podcast, Steve, Neil and Skye return to the films of James Cameron and his directorial debut (not counting Piranha 2), starring possibly the most prominent megastar of their childhood, Arnold Schwarzenegger. That film is Cameron's gritty, action-science-fiction smash hit, The Terminator, which celebrates its 40th anniversary this month. The product of a fever dream Cameron had whilst in Rome during the Piranha 2 debacle, The Terminator represents one of the most cost effective filmmaking endeavours of the 1980s, whereby a potentially pulpy science fiction yarn was bolstered by some truly defining star turns, none more so than the titular character himself. Schwarzenegger's portrayal of a killer cyborg from the future would define his career like no other role. Coupled with precise filmmaking from a young, driven, perfectionist director, some stunning effects work from artists such as Stan Winston, a stunning, synth-filled, percussive and atmospheric score from composer Brad Fiedel, and some gorgeous cinematography and tight editing, these ingredients would come together to create a film that the Film ‘89 team regard as one of the most important films of their upbringing, one that holds up today as a true masterpiece of genre filmmaking.

It's not a stretch to say that James Cameron's The Terminator might be one of the most influential movies of all time. Produced on a shoestring budget, The Terminator introduced the world to Arnold Schwarzenegger's T-800 and Linda Hamilton's Sarah Connor, mother of the human resistance. In this original classic, Arnie's T-800 is a terrifying figure, much different from the heroic character we'd come to love in the sequels. James Cameron's sci-fi time travel masterpiece is also an iconic monster movie for horror fans. Listen to us discuss the OG Terminator. Synopsis The Terminator is about a machine that terminates. But it's not bugs like you'd think, it's people. But not people now in the future from when the Terminator is from, but from the present in the past. It kills present day people from the past, by traveling from the future present.  Also sent from the now future is Kyle Reece, who needs to save his bosses mom from the Terminator and also generally just be a bummer. Review of The Terminator The Terminator as a film is much like it's titular monster. Slick, focused, and effective. The tone is bleak, and unlike other time travel movies, is stripped of all humor inherent the premise. The script is tight and communicates that the future is a nightmare, and needs to be stopped at all cost.  Arnold Schwartzenegger gets the role that further pushes him into stardom with his iconic lines like “I'll be back”,and “Hey, I'm Terminating here!” James Cameron, in his second feature film, second only to Pirahna 2, creates a fully realized sci-fi masterpiece. The special effects of the Stan Winston Studio and the music of the Brad Fiedel augment what is really just a low budget slasher movie. The Terminator operated off of a budget of only 6.5 mil. Compare that to The Ice Pirates that came out the same year, that had a budget of 9 million, which was also considered low.  Score 10/10

Un elenco de actores cuya química es evidente a lo largo de todo el metraje, destacando a Jamie Lee Curtis que se come la cámara y nos demuestra su dualidad y versatilidad en la interpretación, pasando de una modosa y amargada ama de casa a una empoderada y sexy agente secreta. En al plantel de secundarios encontrábamos a gente tan potente como Tom Arnold, Bill Paxton o la bellísima Tia Carrere (cásate conmigo que aún estamos a tiempo). Un proyecto con aire de Serie B, a mitad de camino entre la ciencia ficción, el terror, el thriller, el western urbano, todo ello revestido como una simple aventura de supervivencia. Un éxito de taquilla mundial que puso al amigo Arnold Schwarzenegger en órbita, y consagró definitivamente a su joven director, James Cameron. Era 1984 y no veíamos a las máquinas como una amenaza, todo lo contrario, como casi siempre, el cine se adelanta al devenir de los tiempos, y hoy, los augurios del atormentado sargento Reese se han cumplido, en su trasfondo filosófico: Las máquinas dominan nuestras vidas y prácticamente, piensan por nosotros, lastima que no tengamos a Sarah Connor para que engendre al libertador de lo que quede de este descreído mundo……. “El futuro no esta escrito”. Es uno de los mantras de la historia de Terminator, una obra que se convirtió en clásica casi al momento, abriendo la espita de los blockbusters sobre ciencia ficción, marcando claramente el camino a seguir. James Cameron nos ofrece una clase maestra sobre puesta en escena y ritmo narrativo, utilizando sabiamente los escasos medios, puestos al servicio de un relato apasionante; con unos efectos especiales, que en 1984 causaron sensación, de hecho andaba por ahí, el maestro Stan Wiston. Un grupo de actores jóvenes y con gran personalidad: la dulce Sarah Connor interpretada por Linda Hamilton, que se va endureciendo poco a poco, ante la enorme responsabilidad que se le viene encima, engendrar al salvador de la humanidad, nada menos. El sargento Kyle Reese, Michael Biehn, el soldado por excelencia, un superviviente, con una determinación inquebrantable. Welcome to a Cinematic Sound Radio Network Interview Special featuring film composer, musician and writer Brad Fiedel. Raised in Bayville, New York on Long Island on March 10, 1951, Fiedel graduated from The Barlow School. After college, he became a popular and progressive composer, and in the 1980s, he worked on several successful movies, predominantly in the action and thriller genres, and pioneered the use of electronic instruments and synthesizers—almost disappearing from the mainstream at the end of the 1990s. He was the keyboardist for Hall and Oates. He began his career in film in the late 1970s, and wrote extensively for television films and minor cinema releases, until director James Cameron hired him to score the science fiction film The Terminator in 1984, setting the wheels in motion for a successful career. Since then, Fiedel has scored many popular and successful movies, including FRIGHT NIGHT (1985) and its sequel FRIGHT NIGHT PART 2 (1988), THE BIG EASY (1987), THE SERPENT AND THE RAINBOW (1988), THE ACCUSED (1988), BLUE STEEL (1990), TERMINATOR 2: JUDGMENT DAY (1991), BLINK (1994), and TRUE LIES (1994). His last major theatrical score was in 1995, and although he enjoyed a brief period of renewed interest following the release of TERMINATOR 3: RISE OF THE MACHINES in 2003, when Marco Beltrami wrote an orchestral arrangement of his TERMINATOR theme, Fiedel shows no sign of returning to the film music field. In recent years, Fiedel moved on to other creative areas, which has included writing original musicals. His latest is FULL CIRCLE. Based loosely on events from Fiedel’s grandfather’s life. The story centres on Sarah, a teenager who is stuck in her New York City Apartment. She is so sensitive and empathetic that she is no longer able to tolerate going out in public. She absorbs the feelings and thoughts of others so deeply that she loses control of her body movements, causing intolerable pain and embarrassment. The appearance of her mysterious estranged grandfather creates a possibility for them to work together trying to solve a mystery that has haunted the family for years and is the cause of much suffering. Working alone in his home studio, Fiedel was able to assemble various recordings he had of the songs, scenes and narration to create a complete audio experience of the show When plans for this spring fell apart including a trip to London for the premiere of his iconic Terminator score to be played live at the Royal Albert Hall, Brad Fiedel had a lot of time on his hands. “ Stuck at home, I decided to take the opportunity to complete this musical that had been needing my attention for a long time. It’s a project that’s very close to my heart and imagining people at home experiencing it really made the whole process feel worthwhile.” FULL CIRCLE, the two-act musical was released on all digital platforms on June 24th. In June 2020, for the Cinematic Sound Radio Network, Jason Drury talked to Brad Fiedel, via Zoom at his home in Santa Barbara, California. It’s Episode 123! Comedians Dane Baptiste (Questions Everything) and Funmbi Omotayo (Quotas Full)  join Flixwatcher to review Dane’s choice, The Terminator. The Terminator is the 1984 sci fi classic from James Cameron starring Arnie as the Terminator, Linda Hamilton as Sarah Connor and Michael Biehn as Kyle Reese. The Terminator is sent back in time to 1984 from 2029 to kill Sarah Connor to prevent the leader of the resistance John Connor being born. Reese is sent back by John to protect her and (spoiler!) ensure that John Connor does exist.   The Terminator is still as brilliant as it was in 1984, Terminator 2: Judgement Day might be funnier and have the best special effects ever but this film is more iconic. Everything from the futuristic score by Brad Fiedel, Stan Winston’s amazing animatronics, Arnie’s iconic sunglasses, and the ‘I’ll be back’ line still feels fresh and exciting.   Scores [supsystic-tables id=128] Unsurprisingly The Terminator scores highly across recommendability and repeat viewing, if you’ve not seen it in a while you’ve probably forgotten about the flash of Arnie’s member. You don't notice them because they're in opposition to everything you believe in. But they're still all there. They're still all around you. The thing you just learned about, it's always been there. That new change in yourself, it's always been there. Things that seem good, things that seem evil, things that attract you. It's always been there. Nothing has ever changed. Except your awareness, and your awareness is going to keep changing. It's going to keep arcing, and developing, and looping, all the way 'til the end. And the only thing that's changing in the world is everyone's awareness. All the matter, the matter, the bits, they're the same. It might be in a different order, but they're the same. So, you can change your awareness. You can notice the awareness of others. Change... you can change, you can change others' awareness. You can't change. You can't change. You can't change anything. And everything that's happening, everything that's going on right now, it's never going to end, it's never going to start. You can try to own it, you can try to make it. You can be frustrated with it, you can walk away from it, you can not look at it, but it's still going to be there. This is here. This is in the air, and you can tune into the frequency that it's vibrating at, and you can choose to resonate with it, or you can lock into different frequencies. You can turn down your consciousness. You can overdose on something. But it's still going to be here, because it's here. It's here now. You can never get away from your past. It's here now in the frequency. You can look away. Just keep looking away. Keep looking at things to help you look away. If you focus on this point, you don't have to see that one. That new change in yourself, it's always been there. Things that seem good, things that seem evil, things that attract you. It's always been there. Nothing has ever changed. Except your awareness, and your awareness is going to keep changing. It's going to keep arcing, and developing, and looping, all the way 'til the end. And the only thing that's changing in the world is everyone's awareness. All the matter, the matter, the bits, they're the same. It might be in a different order, but they're the same. So, you can change your awareness. You can notice the awareness of others. Change... you can change, you can change others' awareness. You can't change. You can't change. You can't change anything. And everything that's happening, everything that's going on right now, it's never going to end, it's never going to start. You can try to own it, you can try to make it. You can be frustrated with it, you can walk away from it, you can not look at it, but it's still going to be there. This is here. This is in the air, and you can tune into the frequency that it's vibrating at, and you can choose to resonate with it, or you can lock into different frequencies. You can turn down your consciousness. You can overdose on something. But it's still going to be here, because it's here. It's here now. You can never get away from your past.
