Given that Tim's band were one of the first groups I ever truly fell for, and we share a tonne of mutual friends, I was surprised to realise that I hadn't already done an episode with him. Doubly so given that the group's recently released eighth album, Race The Night, is one of the best albums I've heard in 2023. And yet I think it was worth the wait!

At Home With Colin Murray

Lead singer of Ash, Tim Wheeler, chats to Colin Murray about the band's latest album Chase the Night and their upcoming tour. The pair also get into how the band has survived over two decades with the original members, hiding the struggle when acclimatising to fame, being featured in Kerrang and being a ‘pin up for teen girls', and what it's like having a fashion editor mogul for a mother-in-law.

This week on the Phoenix 5-0 show we have heavy hearts after celebrating the lives of two men who passed away this month. This past week we said our final goodbye to Sergeant Tim Wheeler and Officer Mark Aker. Rather than me telling you who these men were, I decided to let you hear from their friends who spoke at Wheeler and Aker's services. Officer Andrew Hoenigman (Henning-man) was one of Tim Wheeler's best friends over the last 17 years. Hoeningman delivered a powerful eulogy for his friend which included a story about Wheeler. Mark Aker's partner on patrol in the Maryvale precinct was Officer Justin Martin. Martin memorialized Aker's life by talking about the relationships he developed with so many on the department. Officer Martin also talked about the relationship he now has with the Aker family. Lastly, we hear from Pastor Bob Fesmire, who is the official Chaplain for Phoenix PD. Pastor Bob spoke at Mark Aker's funeral about the modern day challenges officers are facing. Both men passed away from medical events, and so Pastor Bob's words were especially poignant on this day.  See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Baseball By Design: Stories of Minor League Logos and Nicknames

The erstwhile Bakersfield Blaze were not the most glamorous of franchises, but before they were contracted by Minor League Baseball, their backwards-facing ballpark was home to stories that feel like they're right out of a Hollywood movie—games that had to be paused as the sun set over the center field wall, the time they intentionally set the field on fire, a game played with a 12-man roster and a 44-year-old coach pitching. Longtime Blaze employees Philip Guiry and Tim Wheeler share these stories in inimitable fashion, and discuss the somewhat ignominious branding history of the long gone franchise. How many times did you rely on clean water this morning? Did you take a shower or wash your face? Maybe you made coffee or tea … then brushed your teeth. Perhaps you downed big gulps of H-2-O during an early morning workout. Each time we turn on a faucet, we trust that our drinking water is pure and safe, as we've come to expect. But do we really know what's in our water … and what ‘acceptable' levels of impurities are allowed? Some of those impurities are called ‘Per-fluorinated and poly-fluorinated substances,' also known as PFAS. They also have the daunting moniker of ‘forever chemicals. To learn more about forever chemicals, last December we asked Tim Wheeler, associate editor and senior writer of the Bay Journal, to break it down for us. For decades many federal agencies have been prohibiting reporters from talking to anyone without first requesting access through a public information officer (PIO). And over those years, these “PIO chokepoints” have gotten tighter and tighter, including oversight on conversations and demands for questions ahead of any interview.  Reporters today are often not allowed to speak to anyone, even after acquiescing to censorship and controls. First Amendment attorney and head of the Brechner Center, Frank LoMonte, wrote in a 2019 article: “Although the practice of gagging public employees from giving unapproved interviews is pervasive across all levels of government, decades' worth of First Amendment caselaw demonstrates that blanket restrictions on speaking to the media are legally unenforceable.”   In July, twenty-five journalism organizations, including the Society of Professional Journalists (SPJ) and the Society of Environmental Journalists (SEJ) ,  called on the Biden administration to end these prohibitions and allow reporters to interview government sources without oversight. In this 104th episode of “E&P Reports,” publisher Mike Blinder speaks with SPJ immediate past president and opinion editor at the San Diego News and Tribune, Matt Hall along with Chair of the SEJ and an editor at the Chesapeake Bay Journal, Tim Wheeler about how their two organizations (along with others) are working towards helping the industry

We had the pleasure of interviewing Drew Citron over Zoom video!Brooklyn indie-rock stalwart Drew Citron formed Beverly in 2013, after having got her start as a touring member with Frankie Rose and The Pains of Being Pure of Heart. Over the course of Beverly’s two LPs, released on Kanine Records, Citron toured the world with big acts (The Drums, We Are Scientists). She and Beverly drummer, Scott Rosenthal (Class Actress, The Beets), would go on to open storied Bushwick music-venue, Alphaville, and more recently embark on the highly regarded post-punk outfit, Public Practice. In all these collaborative endeavors, Citron has been developing, refining, and ultimately giving life to what is her latest project, Free Now, due out Summer of 2020 on Park The Van.“Growing up in San Francisco, I used to take so many long melancholic walks listening to The Smiths on my Discman. And those walks now strike me as a kind of prelude to the feeling I’m getting at with this album,” says Citron. “Most of the songs were written in Northern California, camped out on the coast recalling much of how it felt to be an adolescent of sixteen, in love with a record.”Citron, after the break up of Beverly and the end of her long-term relationship with Rosenthal, writes a lot about heartbreak on Free Now. But at thirty-four, she’s also arrived at the height of her performing/writing/producing abilities. “I am finally unafraid to get up on stage and be the front-person, to write all my own material, to get behind a mixing board and turn the knobs and produce my own songs,” she says. “And it took time to get here. It takes time.”In the recording, Citron recruited an extremely talented pool of musicians, recording with Sam Owens (aka Sam Evian) at Flying Cloud, Tim Wheeler (of Ash) at Atomic Heart, John Agnello (engineer: Dinosaur Jr., Sonic Youth, Kurt Vile) at Water Music, and Danny Taylor at Transmitter Park Studio. The song arrangements were worked out on stage night after night with Citron’s backing band, comprised of Nico Hedley and Laura Catalano, so that when Citron went into the studio, the songs were, as they say, ready to go.With Free Now, Citron, one of the most beautiful voices in Indie Rock, comes to the table with a whole lot of pain to sing about and the full musical knowledge to put herself, and her talents, front, and center. We want to hear from you! As subject matter goes, it doesn't get much more rock and roll than Joy Division, New Order, The Happy Mondays, Ian Dury, The Stone Roses, Coldplay and Oasis. But, in one way or another, all these artists have featured in the work of British director Mat Whitecross. As we'll discover, Mat got his big break from Michael Winterbottom while working as a runner on the set 24 Hour Party People, which tells the story of Tony Wilson and Factory Records. The pair went on to direct Road To Gauntanomo together, before he flew solo on the Ian Dury biopic Sex And Drugs And Rock And Roll and Stone Roses-inspired comedy, Spike Island. Coldplay are among his illustrious list of music video clients, while he's also worked with composer Ilan Eshkeri and Tim Wheeler of Ash on more than one project. Indeed, Ilan and Tim have very kindly supplied us with some of their favourite compositions for their film and TV work with Mat, which you'll hear throughout the show. And as if you needed more, there are excerpts from Rael Jones' score for Mat's Oasis documentary Supersonic too, amid the more familiar fare served up by the band themselves.

O nome WRY no português significa torto, distorcido, estranho e irônico. Já dividiram o mesmo palco com bandas como The Rakes, The Subways, The Cribs, Fleeing New York, Houston500 e The Parkinsons. Lançaram o single Come And Fall/Where I Stand no começo de 2005 e estão preparando o lançamento de Airport Girl/In The Hell Of My Head pela Reckless Records/GooMusic para 2006, seguido de uma turnê pela Inglaterra. Wry também foi convidado a participar da coletânea “Never Lose That Feeling” de bandas novas fazendo covers de clássicos indie e shoegaze. Wry vai fazer “Some Candy Talking” do Jesus and Mary Chain. Coletânea “Sound Issues2” junto com bandas como The Magic Numbers e The Rakes. Wry entra com a inédita When I Go, gravada em Londres. Além da banda o vocalista Mario Bross promove duas noites Londrinas chamadas Goonite Club e Club Take Me To The Other Side, em lugares consagrados do rock britânico: Buffalo Bar e The Garage. Hoje Wry escuta bandas como Razorlight, The Strokes, U2, Legiao Urbana, Walkmen, NIN, Bloc Party, Test Icicles, Sonic Youth e My Bloody Valentine. Como Goo Goo Meginee Tour 2000/01, I LOVE&HATE YOU BRAZIL tour 2002 e a última WRY EM CHAMAS NO BRAZIL 2005/2006.
