On today’s episode, Jodi talks about her journey as a business and visibility coach navigating the year 2020, as well as being the voice for her community promoting diversity and inclusion in the spiritual entrepreneurship space. I absolutely loved this conversation. During this episode, Jodi talks about: The importance of being and having a voice during a time where old racist paradigms are brought to the surface. The importance of honoring the message that's on our hearts and following our intuition at all times to stay in alignment. What it was like growing up as a poor immigrant, and having to shed the low self-worth and victim mindset to get to where she is today. What it's like to operate from flow, rather than hustle. Jodi dives deep into bringing more inclusion into the spiritual space, and into what manifestation is like from her unique perspective. Jodi is a Business Coach and Visibility Queen! Jodi is the CEO of Alignment Is The New Hustle, a business strategy and personal development brand that helps early-stage entrepreneurs start, scale, and succeed in business in a flow state. She does this by teaching aligned systems and strategies that mix the woo with the do. Her mission is to empower entrepreneurs worldwide to share their message and get paid for it! Jodi shares SO many mic drops during this episode and truly INSPIRES you to be a VOICE, honor the message that is on your heart and to follow your intuition. IT’S NEVER GOING TO BE PERFECT. We all have this vision of the ideal life. We work hard and get everything done. All of our relationships are in great shape. We take time to exercise and eat right. But the truth is, there is no magical destination. And even if we reach that place, it could all be destroyed in an instant by one of life’s famous curveballs. Instead of looking at balance like a happily ever after, look at it as something you constantly need to reevaluate and adjust. For this Five Minute Friday, I revisited a conversation I had with Jay Papasan where he shared his philosophy of counterbalance. Jay Papasan is the co-author of The One Thing: The Surprisingly Simple Truth Behind Extraordinary Results. He wants you to be purposeful about the way you spend your time. Learn how to tackle the myth of work/life balance in Episode 885. In This Episode You Will Learn: About work/life balance and if it’s possible (02:00) Why balance is a verb, not a noun (02:30) How to counterbalance (03:00) If you enjoyed this episode, check out the video, show notes, and more at http://www.lewishowes.com/885 and follow at instagram.com/lewishowes
WE FEAR WHAT WE DON’T UNDERSTAND. The future doesn’t have to be scary. You don’t have to put your energy into building bunkers, hiding gold bars in the ground, and preparing for the end. The future can be full of possibility. There are so many exciting advancements happening in the fields of science, health, and space. But you have to change your mindset from fear to positivity. The world is magic. On today’s episode of The School of Greatness, I talk about the future of health and technology with a transformative leader and visionary: Peter Diamandis. Recently named by Fortune as one of the “World’s 50 Greatest Leaders,” Peter H. Diamandis is the founder and executive chairman of the XPRIZE Foundation, which leads the world in designing and operating large-scale incentive competitions. He is also the executive founder of Singularity University, a graduate-level Silicon Valley institution that counsels the world's leaders on exponentially growing technologies. Peter repeats his “Massively Transformative Purpose” to himself throughout his day to give him focus. His passion is the key to his success. So get ready to get excited about the technology of the future on Episode 881. Some Questions I Ask: Isn’t every generation going to be the best time in the world moving forward? (11:00) Have you ever doubted yourself? (33:00) Did anything shift in you when your boys were born? (41:00) Does the future make us dumber? (48:00) Is there anything missing in your life? YOUR EGO NEEDS FEEDING. We all have addictions. Some of us know exactly what habits we need to break. Others don’t even realize we’re addicted to unhealthy patterns. Whether it’s smoking, relationships, or simply being addicted to ourselves, we could all benefit from mapping out our habits to begin to understand them. It’s important to foster our curiosity. If we can learn to investigate our minds the way we investigated our environment as children, we can begin to understand ourselves. Sometimes it’s our ego that we continue to feed. Other times it’s a false sense of reward we think we’re receiving from an old habit. Through mindfulness, we can learn to experience our habits as they are and not as we remember them. When we do this, we can begin breaking even our most challenging addictions. On today’s episode of The School of Greatness, we discuss optimizing habits, breaking addictions, and transforming your life with one of the kindest addiction psychiatrists and mindfulness experts that I have ever met: Dr. Jud Brewer. Dr. Jud Brewer is the Director of Research and Innovation at the Mindfulness Center and associate professor in psychiatry at the School of Medicine at Brown University, as well as a research affiliate at MIT. As an addiction psychiatrist and internationally known expert in mindfulness training for treating addictions, Dr. Jud has developed and tested novel mindfulness programs for habit change, including both in-person and app-based treatments for smoking, and emotional eating and anxiety. So get ready to learn how mindfulness can free you from addiction on Episode 878. Some Questions I Ask: What was the hardest addiction for you to overcome? (11:05) What is the first thing people can do to self-assess themselves? (21:45) What are the 5 or 6 common addictions that most people have? (22:30) Are meditation and mindfulness the solution to everything? (36:00) Are there any addictions that you have not been able to overcome? (46:55) What’s the difference between a habit and an addiction? (50:00) Is mental illness something that can be cured? (54:30) What is the difference between mindfulness and overthinking? (57:50) In This Episode You Will Learn: About the ego and how many people are addicted to themselves (13:25) How mapping out your habit loops can help you understand the truth about your experiences. (21:00) The power of curiosity (20:00) About reward-based learning (26:30) The science behind reward-based learning and how it helps us understand changing behavior (31:30) How to hack cravings with curiosity (34:30) How Dr. Jud’s apps help you map out your habits and start your habit-breaking journey (42:00) About positive habits and when they become problematic (45:00) About the two types of curiosity (52:00) Why we continue to struggle so much when the answers are often right in front of us (59:00) The science behind the effect of true generosity, kindness, and connection on our habits (1:07:00) Plus much more... WHAT TURNS YOUR CRANK? We often define ourselves by what job we do. I’m an accountant. I’m a teacher. I work in finance. But maybe we’re thinking about our careers in the wrong parameters. Instead of finding a job, we should be trying to find a way to feel excited and fulfilled every day. If you wake up with dread, you feel like you’re in a suit that’s too small, or you’re uninspired, you’re probably not in the right place. So how do we figure out what we’re meant to do? It’s not easy. But it’s worth trying to figure out. For this Five Minute Friday, I revisited a conversation I had with Suzy Welch where she shares how to find your “Area of Destiny.” Suzy Welch is a business journalist, TV commentator, and public speaker. A popular Today Show and CNBC contributor, Suzy is the author of the New York Times bestseller 10-10-10: A Life Transforming Idea, a guide to values-driven decision making. With her husband, Jack Welch, Suzy founded the Jack Welch Management Institute, ranked as one of the top online MBA programs in the world by Princeton Review and CEO Magazine. In This Episode You Will Learn: About the sermon that gave Suzy the idea of the “Area of Destiny” (2:30) The two types of “Super Highways” (3:30) How to find what you’re uniquely good at (4:00)

YOU DON’T HAVE TO BE THE BEST. So often we feel behind. Other people have already figured out what they want. Other people got started earlier. They’re sure of the path they’re on. But that’s not necessarily a good thing. I would have never thought I’d end up where I am now. My whole life I’ve been a generalist. I’ve never been the best at anything. There was always someone bigger, faster, and stronger. But I had heart and vision, and I was willing to work just as hard. This allowed me to collect a lot of different skills. Those skills, even though they seem random, make me successful on the path I’m on now. If you take your time and follow your inspiration, you’ll end up somewhere you couldn’t have even imagined. On today’s episode of The School of Greatness, I talk about finding your perfect career path with an expert on fulfilling work: David Epstein. David Epstein is a New York Times bestselling author and a science and investigative reporter. He co-authored the story for Sports Illustrator that revealed Yankees third baseman Alex Rodriguez had used steroids. His writing has been honored by an array of organizations, from the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine, to the Society of Professional Journalists and the National Center on Disability and Journalism, and has been included in the Best American Science and Nature Writing anthology. David gives example after example of people who had diverse backgrounds that seemed unrelated to the thing they ended up being famous for. He says that his most important projects are things he never could have planned. So get ready to learn why setting rigid long term goals may actually hold you back on Episode 817. Some Questions I Ask: How do we know what our best skills are? (22:30) What advice would you give your son about figuring out his career? (23:30) How do we do the matching process for ourselves? (43:00) Why do we have an obsession with being the best? (57:00) How do we know when we’ve found fulfillment? (1:04:00) In This Episode You Will Learn: About the concept “skill stacking” (10:00) Why David wrote his book on generalists (11:00) About The Dark Horse Project (13:30) Why “self-regulatory learning” is the most beneficial (16:00) About the “end of history allusion” (25:00) How David uses a “book of experiments” (48:00) Why we get stuck in the rut of competence (52:00)
Harvest seeds of growth. Ending relationships is never easy. But it’s a part of life. Not all relationships last, but it’s how we end them that makes all the difference. You can use the opportunity to plant seeds that better your future, or you can plant bitter seeds that will bloom into hatred and rage. You make the decision. It is possible to consciously uncouple. For this Five Minute Friday, I revisited a conversation I had with Katherine Woodward where she explained the best way to end a relationship. Katherine Woodward Thomas, M.A., MFT is the author of the New York Times Bestseller Conscious Uncoupling: 5 Steps to Living Happily Even After, which was nominated for a Books for a Better Life Award, and the national bestseller, Calling in “The One:” 7 Weeks to Attract the Love of Your Life. She is also a licensed marriage and family therapist and teacher to thousands from all corners of the world in her virtual and in-person learning communities. Katherine teaches us to understand our feelings and gives us techniques to release them. In This Episode You Will Learn: About “affect labeling” or naming your feelings (2:00) The practice of Tonglen (3:55) How to harvest the seeds of growth that are underneath our emotions (4:30) About the concept of Karma (5:20)
THE HARDEST THING TO DO WHEN YOU GET OLDER IS CHANGE A HABIT. There is a Buddhist metaphor of the elephant and the rider. We are all riding an elephant. We think that we are in control. We have the reigns. But the elephant could overpower us at any moment. No matter how much we use our minds, our emotions ultimately are more powerful. This applies to the way we eat. We become slaves to our cravings and desires. Sometimes it takes something big to get back in control of our “elephant.” On today’s episode of The School of Greatness, I talk about changing habits, being authentic, and what it takes to build the longest running act in Vegas with one of the world’s most famous magicians: Penn Jillette. Penn Jillette is a magician, actor, musician, inventor, television personality, and best-selling author best known for his work with fellow magician Teller as half of the team Penn & Teller. The duo has been featured in numerous stage and television shows such as Penn & Teller: Fool Us, and Penn & Teller: Bullshit!, and are currently headlining in Las Vegas at The Rio. He has published eight books, including the New York Times Bestseller, God, No!: Signs You May Already Be an Atheist and Other Magical Tales. Not many people can keep a marriage together for over forty years, let alone a working partnership. Penn is someone who shows up authentically every day. He isn’t afraid to express his thoughts and values even though they upset some people. So get ready to learn how to doubt yourself less and care about the things that matter on Episode 814. Some Questions I Ask: Why do we live in so much fear when we’re safer than ever? (8:00) What are you most proud of in the last few years? (9:00) Which of your parents is the most influential in your life? (47:00) What’s the lesson you still need to learn about yourself? (54:00) Is there anything you wish you would have done differently in the last years? (1:01:00) What is your superpower? (1:09:00) In This Episode You Will Learn: About the “mono diet” (20:00) Penn’s thoughts on religion (40:00) What makes Penn and Teller successful as a partnership (58:00) About “effective altruism” (1:13:00) How empathy makes a great magician and artist (1:19:00) If you enjoyed this episode check out the video, show notes and more at www.lewishowes.com/814 and follow at instagram.com/lewishowes
BUILD YOUR CASTLE. Love at first sight is bullshit. A relationship is like a castle. You find a plot of land that has a lot of potential. Then, bit by bit, you build the castle. But it takes work from both of you. One person can’t be laying the bricks while the other is home watching TV. After lots of hard work, you’ll have something unique and ornate that belongs to you. You’ll have a castle. That’s love. On today’s episode of The School of Greatness, I talk about the key to lasting relationships with an international guru of the dating and relationship-coaching scene: Matthew Hussey. Matthew Hussey is a speaker, New York Times Bestselling author, columnist for Cosmopolitan Magazine, and dating expert on ABC’s digital series What To Text Him Back. His corporate clients include Hugo Boss, The Perfume Shop, Virgin Gyms, Procter & Gamble, Bare Escentuals, U.S. legal giant Weil Gotshal & Manges, and global management consultants Accenture. 50,000 women have attended his live events and he has reached over 10 million online. Matthew says that the “activation energy” for starting relationships is lower than ever. This causes ghosting. People are less invested in relationships. But there are ways you can meet people indirectly. So get ready to learn the three things you need to build a great relationship on Episode 811. Some Questions I Ask: Do people even want to have a committed, long term relationship? (19:00) Is a great relationship when you stop thinking about your needs and not expecting anything in return? (21:30) How do we step outside of the emotional feelings in a relationship? (25:00) When do you know you’re ready for a committed, intimate relationship? (47:00) What are the three things you need to have to sustain a relationship? (52:00) In This Episode You Will Learn: About “activation energy” and why things like Tinder make it low (10:00) Why space is important in order to not react emotionally (30:00) About the “castle” metaphor and why you need to build together (38:00) Why the “trash cans” define your relationship more than the highlights (45:00) The four stages of all relationships (1:02:30) The first step you can do to get out of the weeds of singlehood (1:11:30) If you enjoyed this episode, check out the video, show notes, and more at www.lewishowes.com/811 and follow at instagram.com/lewishowes

After breaking her back in a surfing accident, Amelia realized that life is too short to do anything but what you love - our dreams exist for a reason. Her daily mission is to love people and help them activate their highest potential. Amelia and I met at The Bliss Project, and I am so grateful that our paths crossed! This episode is sure to leave you feeling inspired to take action in your own life, and transform your negative script into one of pure passion. Question Highlights: What do you do to take some pressure off before you lead? Why did you lean on crutches, like drugs, to numb yourself? What made you take a first step out of the numbing lifestyle? Does the theme of pushing things away still come up for you now? What kind of work are you doing around passing the tests of life? What does daily fear feel like for you? Guest Bio: Amelia Travis is an E-RYT 500, writer, speaker, and business coach. As the founder of Stoked Yogi, she’s impacted thousands of lives through yoga education programs, stand up paddle and surf experiences, and women’s empowerment retreats. The journey to an empowered life was a long and winding road. Body dysmorphia, people pleasing and perfectionist tendencies led Amelia down the path of drug addiction, disordered eating, abusive relationships and a “sugar baby” lifestyle, and spiraled her into a rock bottom of a hundred thousand dollars in debt and a lost and broken heart. In 2009, a spiritual awakening led Amelia to the realization that she was the only one standing in the way of becoming the woman she wanted to be. She decided to embrace messy, imperfect, unapologetic FEELING, and has since built and scaled a multi-six figure business, certified over 700 yoga teachers in stand up paddle board yoga and coached hundreds of women to personal and professional success. Amelia’s writing has been published in Yoga Journal, Huffington Post, and the Inertia. She has also had the honor of sharing a message on mindset shift as a TEDx speaker. In 2012, after breaking her back in a surfing accident, Amelia realized that life is too short to do anything but what you love - our dreams exist for a reason. Her daily mission is to love people and help them activate their highest potential. She lives by her personal mantra: Set your intention, breathe it to life. SPEND ON THE THINGS YOU LOVE. We all have an area of life we love spending money on. For me, it’s relationships. For you, it could be travel, food, wellness or something else. This is called your “money dial.” Once you figure out your money dial, you can spend intentionally on that rather than spending lots of money on everything. For this Five Minute Friday, I revisited a conversation I had with Ramit Sethi where he shared about his concept of “money dials” and how to spend money on the things that bring you joy. Ramit says that we should cut back spending on things we don’t care about but spend without apology on the area that makes us the happiest. We can also stop judging other people for having different money dials than us. Learn how to identify your money dial and how it can take your life to the next level in Episode 798. In This Episode You Will Learn: About the different “money dials” people have (1:40) The most common “money dial” (2:03) Ramit’s personal “money dial” (2:56) What you should cut back spending on (4:18) Follow me on: Instagram @LewisHowes Twitter @LewisHowes Facebook @LewisHowes
YOUR MOST POWERFUL TOOL IS YOUR VOICE. We are surrounded by stories of injustice around us. It can be overwhelming. Screaming with anger doesn’t get you very far. Making the other side wrong just makes a war. So how can you make a change? You have to come from a place of compassion. Know the result that you want. Stop leading with emotion and try instead to focus on the concrete change you want to make. We live in a democracy- our voice counts. On today’s episode of The School of Greatness, I discuss how the legislative system works with a powerful sexual assault advocate: Amanda Nguyen. Amanda Nguyen is the founder and CEO of Rise, a non-governmental civil rights organization. She was the power behind the Sexual Assault Survivors' Rights Act, one of 23 bills to pass unanimously through US Congress. She was in Forbes' 2017 "30 Under 30" Law & Policy list and was an invited speaker at the 2017 Women's March on Washington. In 2018, California representatives Mimi Walters and Zoe Lofgren nominated Nguyen for the 2019 Nobel Peace Prize. Amanda was raped in college and soon after learned of the injustices surrounding sexual assault survivors. Instead of getting angry, she made a change. So get ready to learn how you can make a difference by taking political action on Episode 788. Some Questions I Ask: How does someone rewrite a law? (5:00) How were you able to raise two million dollars in the last two years? (19:00) What’s your biggest fear? (31:00) How does someone who has been through trauma get a message across without anger? YOU HAVE TO SHOW UP EVERY DAY. I’m not a distance runner. When I run, the first few minutes are easy. But after a mile, it starts to hurt. I can either stop there, or I can keep going. When I push through the adversity, I feel like I can run forever. I hit the zone where it doesn’t hurt anymore. The same thing happens in life. You have to keep giving it your best even when it’s hard. You have to know that something great is waiting for you on the other side. Everything you’re going through now is paving the way for success in your future. On today’s episode of The School of Greatness, I talk about passion and hard work with a woman who revolutionized the dessert industry: Christina Tosi. Christina Tosi is a chef, author, and television personality. She is the founder and owner of Milk Bar, the sister bakery to the Momofuku restaurant group, and just opened her seventeenth store. Christina is the recipient of several awards and was featured on a list of "Most Innovative Women in Food and Drink" by Food and Wine Magazine in 2014. Christina shares that every time she gets close to a goal, she raises the bar a little higher. She is always growing and always learning. So get ready to learn how to find your true passion and share your gifts on Episode 778. Some Questions I Ask: Can you tell us the story of how Milk Bar came to be? TRANSFORMATION IS A ROLLER COASTER. It’s that time a year where a lot of us commit to making changes in our lives. But sticking with resolutions is hard. Very few of us are consistently committed to ourselves. It is not easy. We have to think of new habits like a roller coaster. We’re building momentum to making the change. But then the roller coaster goes down. The dip is normal. When you’re feeling low, you have to know that you will climb back up. You have the forward motion to make it happen. To talk about this journey of transformation, I wanted to share a special presentation and Q+A from this year’s Summit of Greatness with an inspirational icon: Shaun T. Shaun T is a world-renowned health and fitness expert, TV host, motivator and creator of the best-selling fitness programs INSANITY, HIP HOP ABS, FOCUS T25, INSANITY MAX:30, CIZE and newly released SHAUN WEEK. He has hosted several primetime TV series and shared the stage with Adam Lambert and Val Kilmer in the musical version of the Ten Commandments, as well as landing roles in Pippin, Applause, Six Feet Under and the feature film Beauty Shop. A native of New Jersey, Shaun T received a BS in Sports Science and a minor in Theater and Dance from Rowan University. He’s danced with Mariah Carey as well as Aaron and Nick Carter, and choreographed for USTA’s Arthur Ashe Kids Day, the NCAA Final Four Halftime Show and the movie Bring it on: All or Nothing. Shaun talks about the phases that we go through when we try and succeed. He shares the superpowers that you have to get in touch with to withstand the roller coaster of chasing a goal. So get ready to learn how to unleash your seven superpowers on Episode 725. Some Questions Asked: What stories need to be told? (7:55) Who do you prepare yourself for the low? (11:06) How do you encourage people to stop hiding the things they’re uncomfortable with? (12:46) How do you go bananas but balance your life? (16:12) In This Episode You Will Learn: About the “secret backpack” that has tools for your life (8:12) Listen to what people are saying their biggest pain (9:57) What are your needs and wants now (11:48) Why you have to have a mirror moment every day (17:40)
When you feel like you’ve reached your limit, you’re only 40% there. How often do you listen to your body when it says, “I’m done?” We get tired, our muscles get sore, so we throw in the towel. We’re wired to stop every time we start to feel pain. But if we ignore that, we can push ourselves to a new limit. Unless you get uncomfortable, you won’t know what you’re really capable of. That’s why I’m excited to revisit a conversation I had with a new friend who is always pushing himself to the next level: Jesse Itzler. Jesse is ultramarathon runner who is also a bestselling author, award-winning rapper, and an original partner for ZICO coconut water. He is the co-founder of Marquis Jets and a co-owner of the NBA’s Atlanta Hawks. Jesse was able to take on everything in his life by putting himself first. Like Jesse says in this episode, “So much of business is a reflection of you, and so many of us don’t invest in ourselves.” Learn how to push yourself past your limit to achieve what you never thought possible on Episode 699. In This Episode You Will Learn: About the 40% Rule (1:42) The one time Jesse reached his limit (3:20) How Jesse gained control of his time (4:47) Why Jesse sets aside 3 hours of his day for himself (5:34)
Other people won't make me happy, it has to be from within me. - Nina Dobrev One of the things that even I struggle with is being complacent. It's easy for all of us to feel comfortable where we are in life and settle for what we have. In fact, it can be scary to try to push things even further. Breaking out of that comfort zone and continuing to grow is the difference between being average and being great. Anytime you feel comfortable, that means you're not challenging yourself and it's time to make a shift. Maybe you need a new job or just to find ways to push yourself further. On this episode of The School of Greatness, we are joined by an inspirational and amazing actress, Nina Dobrev. She's spent her whole life pushing the boundaries and keeps challenging herself any chance she can. You probably know Nina from the hit show The Vampire Diaries. Nina was born in Sofia, Bulgaria. She moved to Canada at the age of two and has lived in Toronto, Ontario ever since. From a very young age, she showed great enthusiasm and talent for the arts: Dance, Gymnastics, Theatre, Music, Visual arts, and Acting! Modeling jobs led to commercials, which then turned into film auditions. Shortly after, she booked roles in the feature films Fugitive Pieces, Away from Her and the popular television series, Degrassi: The Next Generation. We've become good friends over the past couple of years, and I'm constantly impressed by how Nina decides to push herself. Through all of her work, acting is her passion, and she sees it as an adventure that has just begun; she believes that the journey and the characters we create along the way will help us understand ourselves. Discover all of that and much more, on Episode 590. Some Questions I Ask: Why did you get behind the #TimesUp movement? (8:20) What can people do to stop the abuse? (12:48) Did you have a hunger to work hard at an early age? (22:40) Do you feel like you were good to everyone on your way up? (26:55) What is the biggest insecurity you've overcome in your ‘20s? (28:10) Did you see yourself being a star? (30:57) When Vampire Diaries happened did you expect it to be a success? (33:21) Did you see yourself doing things bigger than the show, or were you focused on the role? (36:20) Did you struggle to find new characters to audition for? (40:20) What do you enjoy more, being a character telling the stories or directing the stories? (44:38) What's a story you want to tell that hasn't been told? (46:40) What do you think is holding you back from being the woman you want to be? (47:35) What's the thing you are most proud of that most people don't know about you? Subscribe to Earn Your Happy on iTunes. If you feel the need or calling to spend more time and connect with your soul, today’s heart-warming conversation with author and soulful teacher, Rebecca Campbell, is just the ticket. With an early fascination around the world of spirituality, souls and past lives, Rebecca had always felt a little “weird.” Not because she enjoyed these things, but because others were uncomfortable with it. And so from that young age, she seemingly led a double life – one that was “normal” with her school-aged friends and the other with a group of older, wise women who taught her about the healing arts and the power of intuitive arts. Rebecca always knew she wanted to create (writing, designing etc.), so following that path, she pursued the “normal” career in advertising. She had a very successful career as a creative director, but after experiencing a great period of loss, Rebecca knew she wanted to do more with all those little “soul whispers” that tugged at her heart. With the pipes and structures literally crumbling around her and navigating through her grief, Rebecca began to finally answer this calling and began to write what soon became her first book, Light Is the New Black, followed by Rise Sister Rise. She is grateful for all the life events that led her to where she is today and truly believes that this is the exact path she was meant to take. My Two Cents – Ep. 23 – An Entrepreneur's Hack Guaranteed to Boost Your Income Here it is, the business hack you’ve been waiting for… Delegation. Ok, so this isn’t a new concept, but stick with me because I’m going to share my “formula” and rules that make this a game-changer for your business and life. While the idea of delegation is quite basic, it’s often not used to its full potential – if at all. Just my two cents, but “You simply cannot and should not be doing everything yourself.” I understand that it’s hard either giving up power or money, but this is exactly the reason you SHOULD. You’re not being efficient, it slows you down and you could end up potentially losing money as well. “You should only be doing income-producing activities or activities that you love. That’s it. Nothing else.” So how do you know if delegation is right for you? The following two rules will help you determine if you can afford to delegate or if your business is at a point to delegate tasks. If you can hire out the task for less than you currently value your time at, then do it! Even if you have to hire it out for the same value as what you value your time at (or slightly more), and if it is delegating a non-income-producing activity, then do it. Here’s how to estimate the hourly value of your time: Take your gross revenue (or your estimated gross revenue) and divide it by the number of hours you put into your business. This is typically 2,080 hours a year (52 weeks x 40 hours a week). Example, if you made $80,000, your hourly rate would be about $39/hour. If delegating a task would be less than this – do it! And keep in mind that even if it’s a higher rate, it will likely still save you time (which is ultimately more money). And don’t forget, when you delegate you’re putting more jobs out into the economy as well. Not to mention you’ll likely be passing over duties that frustrate you. In turn you’ll likely feel a weight lifted – and be a happier person! I can tell you from experience that when you’re happier, you attract more customers/business. “A happier entrepreneur is a more effective entrepreneur.” I encourage you to start before you’re ready. Stop doing the things you hate. And spend time doing more of what you love – growing your business and having more fun with it. To help you see where some of your inefficiencies are at (whether you’re an entrepreneur or business leader), be sure to make this list: What’s your hourly value? List every activity that you currently do to grow your business that somebody else could be doing that falls under your hourly value. List things that cost the same as (or a little more than) your hourly rate that you’re currently doing, but would save you hours. Add anything else that you could delegate – get creative! What were your results? I would love to hear! Be sure to tag me on Facebook or IG! Now, go get delegating! Joshua Brooks, medically retired from the United States Army as First Sergeant Brooks joins the A Desire to Inspire with Manny Patrick show to discuss life at war and then, life after. A proud father of five; Trystan, Madison, Daniella, Christian, and Joshua Junior, josh now makes his home in the beautiful jungle of Costa Rica. In February 2000, he left for basic training. Then he joined the United States Army as a 13F, Forward Observer. He talks about his job going anywhere on the front line, where infantry goes or beyond into or behind enemy lines and call for air support or artillery. Josh quickly made the rank of E-8, First Sergeant, in just ten years. This means he was selected by the Department of Army, part of Congress, two times for excellent service and dedication to duty. As he tells me, normally, soldiers don’t make this rank until closer to twenty years. To make this rank in just ten years put Josh in the very top one percent of performers. On top of this, Josh deployed for a total of over three years to combat. Iraq 2002-2003, 2006-2007, and 2009-2010. He served in units such as the 1-23 Tomahawk Stryker Brigade, 1stSpecial Forces, and the Henry Lind Leadership Academy. His awards and decorations include;1 Bronze Star Medal, 1 Meritorious Service Medal, 5 Army Commendation Medals, 6 Army Achievement Medals, 1 Air Force Achievement Medal, Valorous Unit Award, Meritorious Unit Accommodation Medal, National Defense Service Medal, Iraq Campaign Medal, Global War on Terrorism Expeditionary Medal, Korea Defense Service Medal, 4 Non-commissioned Officer Development Medal, Combat Action Badge, The Parachutist Badge, Air Assault Badge, Long Range Reconnaissance Identifier Badge,Marksmanship Qualification Badge Expert with Carbine. Josh talks about how proud he is of the time served in the Military and very grateful to have served amongst the humble heroes who made his time in the service so enjoyable. Then Josh talks about what he learned and experienced during this time and how it will forever be a part of what motivates him to continue to grow and be a better man. The brotherhood within the Army, of those whom you deploy to war with, is unexplainable and unforgettable, he says. Josh has found the deepest fulfillment in the success and happiness of his children. Growing up without a father has motivated him to be the best father within his personal abilities. Although, he don’t currently live with some of his children, he puts forth his greatest efforts to maintain a strong relationship with them and to be the foundation they need in their lives. He talks about how he also learned through time away, that it is never the quantity of time you spend with someone but it is the consistency of how you spend time, and the quality of time, you spend with them that will forever touch their hearts and minds. Nothing makes Josh smile the same as seeing the smiles of all five children. A proud father of them all for their will to succeed, excellent grades in school, and most of all their loving and respectful personalities. To the next step in the journey. In This Episode You Will Learn About: -Why Josh joined the military - What life was like on the war grounds - What was going on in his brain during war - What bothered Josh upon his return home from war - How Josh dealed with life post war - What has affected Josh the most from being at war - How many people were lost under Josh's leadership - What you are not trained for at war - Why Josh decides to live in the jungles of Costa Rica - What different types of therapy there are in the military - Why Josh felt stuck after life at war AND MUCH MORE!!
Janna Hockenjos is a published author and a full time yoga teacher living in Pittsburgh, PA with her husband and their Golden Retriever. The summer Janna Leyde turned 14, her father was in a near fatal car accident that changed everything she knew. Upon earning her BA at Wittenberg University, Janna moved to New York City where she received her masters degree in magazine journalism at NYU and spent the her twenties in New York City, learning the in and outs of magazine writing and publishing. In 2011, she left the industry to become a yoga teacher and write her first book, He Never Liked Cake, a coming of age memoir that tells the story of growing up with her father’s traumatic brain injury. Three years later she moved to Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania to continue her writing and yoga career and publish her second book, Move Feel Think: Yoga for Brain Injury, PTSD, and Other Forms of Trauma. Janna is the owner of Inhale Pittsburgh, a yoga studio located in downtown Pittsburgh. She also represents her community as a lululemon ambassador with a passion to bring the physical and mental benefits of yoga to the brain injury, PTSD, veteran, and trauma population on both local and national levels. When she is not on her mat, she works as a freelance writer, her works appearing in magazines such as Time Out New York and SELF and websites such as mindbodygreen.com, brainline.org, and NEXT Pittsburgh. She is an influential advocate for traumatic brain injury awareness and is frequently is a guest speaker at TBI conferences sharing her experiences. Much like our mutual friend Gabby Bernstein, another amazing guest on Earn Your Happy, Janna started her career in NYC attending grad school at NYU for Magazine Journalism. Continuing your education and attempting to find a good job during the economic fall was difficult, which lead her to begin in advertising and party planning in the city that never sleeps. Looking ahead to the future, Janna realized that although the top of the ladder in the magazine industry looked fun and glamorous, it just wasn't for her. A new life path was in need, which meant personal brainstorming and soul searching. “I’m a word person, I like words. Words, repetition and lists help me plow through life. It was the words 'love over fear' that really had me choosing things based what I loved and the people that I loved, instead of things I was afraid of or doubtful that would come true.” Janna was looking to serve the world. She wanted to take what set her soul on fire and share it with others, which brought her to writing her first book and practicing yoga. “It’s about getting comfortable with what’s uncomfortable and thats what I like to work with.” As Janna tells us, you just need to show up in life, for yourself. It doesn’t matter what it looks like, just get there. "Everything is hard and unfamiliar the first time we do it."
