We also break down the UW-Madison student walkout in support of Columbia student Mahmoud Khalil and the broader implications of the Department of Education's investigation into universities regarding antisemitism allegations. Plus, we discuss the controversy surrounding this year's Arts Business Competition, where, for the first time in its 16-year history, there were no finalists of color. On a lighter note, we highlight the rising career of Matthew Teague, a magician from Madison who is taking his craft to national stages after appearing on Penn & Teller: Fool Us. And finally, we round things out with a discussion on what we're looking forward to this spring—except for Omar, whose allergies have other plans. Keith Kong is a world-class mentalist who blends psychology, influence, and showmanship to create mind-bending experiences. Initially aspiring to be a hostage negotiator, he became fascinated with magic at age 10 and later discovered mentalism through his studies in psychology and criminal profiling. After years of performing in Orlando's entertainment scene—sometimes even underage—he turned his passion into a full-time career. His journey includes a triumphant return to Penn & Teller: Fool Us, where he successfully fooled the legendary duo. Today, Kong captivates audiences at corporate and private events worldwide, using mentalism to explore the mysteries of human behavior. He's currently expanding into keynote speaking and writing a book on situational psychology.

Erik Tait is a world class magician and someone I love to see perform. He has spent over two decades performing as a juggler, standup comedian, and magician. In 2020 Erik decided that he wanted to compete in the 2022 FISM, which is the world championship of magic. Even though he is comfortable on almost any stage in the world, in preparing for the competition he realized he had some deep-seated fears that were affecting his performance. His fear was so acute that it would cause his hand to shake uncontrollably, which is the last thing a card magician wants. Erik's therapist taught him tapping and he credits it (and other tools) with helping him to overcome his fear and win third place in the competition. This made him only the fourth American to accomplish this, and the first American to stand on the podium for card magic in two decades. In this week's podcast, Erik shares how he was first introduced to tapping, how he used it to overcome his fear when preparing for FISM, and how he still uses it today. Even if you never want to perform on stage, Erik's insights are valuable for anyone interested in improving their performance in any arena or endeavor. ALSO, if you want to be blown away by world class magic, you can watch the act we talked about during the interview here: Erik Tait's FISM performance Support the podcast! He took home third place at FISM Quebec 2022, the world championships of magic, in the category of card magic. Erik is only the fourth American to accomplish this, and the first American to stand on the podium for card magic in two decades. He graduated with honors from the prestigious Humber College Comedy Writing and Performance program, which means Erik can academically prove why he is hilarious. Beyond that, Erik is the only magician in the world with a degree in funny. He has put academic theory into practice on some of the most prestigious stages in the world, including The Magic Castle, Second City Toronto, and the Hollywood Improv. His client list has some of the most recognizable brands in the country including Honda, Macy's, and Bark Box.
Today's guest is one of the current top magicians. He's become an international sensation, and his name is Javi Bentiez. Javi is a master of sleight of hand, but more importantly he performs with such a high level of charm, beauty and passion. What Javi presents aren't simply tricks; they are pieces of art. He hails originally from Sevilla, Spain, and was a student of some of magic's biggest influencers like Arturo de Ascanio and Juan Tamariz. He's a regular performer at the world famous Magic Castle in Hollywood, and has performed and lectured at various stages in Las Vegas and around the world. He's also performed on many national and international tv shows, including Penn & Teller: Fool Us. And yes, he also won his very own Fool Us trophy, and has since been described by Penn & Teller as “the best sleight of hand artists we've ever seen”. We interview Kostya Kimlat, a magician who has helped refocus and reenergize the sales and customer service staff at dozens of well-known companies, including Balfour Beatty, Walt Disney World, Morgan Stanley, and Siemens. His ability to translate “thinking like a magician” and managing “perceptual transactions” to creating your desired effect in clients is not only unique but also incredibly insightful and useful. When you listen, you'll learn a genius strategy to dramatically increase access to more prospects instantaneously and without depleting your resources, tips for how to read a room and know what each person needs to stay engaged and satisfied, and four simple steps to create interest and build trust with any audience in any situation. Imagine a world where decisions are decided by the roll of a pair of dice. What to eat? Roll the dice. Who to marry? Roll again. How to die, and when? Get rolling. We can only imagine how different our lives might be if we surrendered every decision to the unpredictable fall of two numbered cubes. From Penn Jillette — yes, that Penn Jillette of the legendary duo Penn & Teller — comes Random: a crime novel that aims to bring Jillette's magic from the stage to the page, inviting readers into a caper story that explores ideas like faith and fate with irreverence, wit, and humor. In Random, Las Vegas native Bobby Ingersoll finds out that he has inherited a crushing gambling debt from his father of ill repute, just two weeks before his twenty-first birthday. The debt is owed to the deplorable Fraser Ruphart who oversees a bottom-rung criminal empire, and Bobby's prospects of paying off the note, which is due the day he turns 21, are bleak. In the nick of time, Bobby stumbles on enough cash to pay off the crime lord and change his family's fortune. Perhaps even more significantly, Bobby finds that he has become a “believer” of sorts. But Bobby does not consign his big break to a higher power — what Penn Jillette hero ever could? Instead, he devises and devotes himself to Random, a philosophy where his life choices are based entirely on the roll of his “lucky” dice. What follows is an amusing exploration that's less about what defines us and more about what divines us. Random combines the intellectual curiosity of Richard Dawkins with the humor and grit of an Elmore Leonard antihero, and its protagonist is Jillette's creative solution to navigating the chaos of the post-truth era. Penn Jillette is a cultural phenomenon as a solo personality and as half of the world-famous Emmy Award–winning magic duo Penn & Teller, whose live show spent years on Broadway and is now the longest-running headlining show in Las Vegas. The pair have their own star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame. Jillette cohosted the Showtime series Penn & Teller: Bullshit! which was nominated for thirteen Emmy Awards and won him a Writers Guild Award. He currently cohosts the CW Network competition series Penn & Teller: Fool Us! His weekly podcast, Penn's Sunday School, was the number one downloaded podcast on iTunes during its debut week and was named by iTunes as Best New Comedy Podcast. He is the author of numerous books, including the nonfiction New York Times best-selling books Presto!: How I Made Over 100 Pounds Disappear and Other Magical Tales and God No!: Signs You May Already Be an Atheist and Other Magical Tales; the novel Sock; and the essay collection Every Day Is an Atheist Holiday! Deceiving others for a living - oh wait! That's politicians. Doug is on a comic kick! In this episode, comic magician Doc Dixon unwittingly exposes Doug's affinity for dark humor. Just kidding. This fun and lively interview takes us behind the scenes with the guy who fooled Penn and Teller (link below). And Doc even comedically corrects the idea that magic is deceiving others. Doc Dixon chats with Doug Stuart about being a (Reformed) Christian libertarian and comic magician. Dixon has been featured on Penn & Tell's Fool Us, and successfully fooled them. Like many of us, Dixon came to libertarianism during the Ron Paul Revolution and the libertarian view of economics and monetary policy. Dixon talks about the natural compatibility between Christianity and libertarianism. They shift topics to discuss Dixon's career choice as a magician. Dixon demystifies professional magic by pointing out that it's a learned skill like anything else. How do magicians decide to share their secrets? (And how much is already "out there" thanks to the Internet). What's the community of magicians like? Do they get together to learn from each other? and much more! Of course, the performance is personal and we get to hear how his personality comes out in his work. Do some Christians believe magic deceiving others and so off limits for us? Dixon has a perfect response for this - "there's an unintended hubris there." Not even Las Vegas, in Dixon's view, are the magic shows really superstitious or occult-like. (Though that's not to say everything in Vegas is that innocent.) Dixon and Stuart take a few (more than a few) friendly jabs at one another throughout. So sit back and enjoy this more lighthearted episode of the Libertarian Christian Podcast. Main Points of Discussion: 00:00 Introduction 02:36 How does Doc Dixon identify? Comedian or Magician 04:38 Doc Dixon's Christian background and how he came to faith 06:10 What led you to Ron Paul? 09:13 Do you believe Christianity and libertarianism is naturally compatible 11:42 Do you incorporate libertarianism into you shows? 16:25 How do you become a magician? 20:08 Magician cocktail parties? 23:16 Are Las Vegas magicians dabbling in the occult in their performances? 27:25 Workshopping magic with other magicians 30:35 Is incorporating humor a part of who you are? 34:26 Dark humor? 37:12 People in other fields you admire? 42:48 Magic over Zoom? This week we take a look at a startup home automation company, Fluid One. Their goal is to seamlessly connect your actions, your decisions, and your home. Then we go through the network shows and premiere dates. We also read your emails and the week's news. News: Comcast plans symmetrical multigig service for 2023 Details about upcoming "Chromecast HD" leaked IKEA x Swedish House Mafia record player goes on sale next month Sonos announces long-awaited Sub Mini for $429 Fluid One: Next Generation Smart Home Control and Automation We found a super interesting Kick starter project called Fluid One. It takes home automation into the AR realm and if it works is pretty cool. From the campaign page: At Fluid, we aim to seamlessly connect your actions, your decisions, and your home - making the environment around you its own responsive interface. They are trying to raise $100,000 but at the time of this writing have only secured about $9,500 from 40 backers. We know what you're thinking. Do we need another Home Automation controller? Probably not a typical one, but this one has some unique features that may appeal to some of you. Most notably, to control a device you simply aim your smartphone at it and the relevant controls appear on your screen. You can also use gestures with the phone like swiping up to turn something on or swipe down to turn it off. Fluid One also makes setup straight forward as well. You aim your phone at the device, tap it and then select it from automatically discovered devices. This also places an air marker at the location. There are some aspects of the setup that the developers claim makes it simple but based on our experience some people will find it overwhelming. The whole concept of laying out the home floor plan including furniture placement is very cool and precise. But that will turn some people off. Setting up Zones and automations as you walk through them are also very cool, but again, many people just want a few lights to turn on at sundown. So the question is who is this system for? Do we need a home automation system this sophisticated? Smart Device and Phone Compatibility: Fluid Lite comes directly compatible with all Homekit devices. To gain access to even more devices, Fluid One enables control over Homebridge, Home Assistant, and any IR devices, amounting to over 2000+ compatible integrations. Fluid One will also be fully Matter compatible upon its upcoming release. The lowest pledge for the Very Early Bird Fluid One Lite is $249 which gets you access to Fluid controls in a Primary Area in your home. When the product comes to market it will cost Retail $399. INCLUDES: 4× Smart Node ESTIMATED DELIVERY Aug 2023 Only available in the United States For $799 you get the Special Fluid One Pro which gets access to Fluid Controls in a Primary Area and Automation in a Primary Area plus four Extension Areas INCLUDES: 8× Smart Node Smart Hub ESTIMATED DELIVERY Aug 2023 Fall 2022 Premiers It's that time of year when our favorite shows come back with new episodes and we get new content as well. The Jake's Take with Jacob Elyachar Podcast is very excited to announce that we are starting a podcast spin-off for its coverage of America's Got Talent (AGT): Season 16.The podcast, Jake's Take's AGT Season 16 Special, will feature conversations with some of the standout acts that successfully auditioned in front of the judges. I want to give a very special shoutout to both Fremantle (AGT's production company) and NBC for giving jakes-take.com and The Jake's Take with Jacob Elyachar Podcast the opportunity to speak with these amazing acts. Escape artist Matt Johnson is the latest performer that I had the opportunity to speak with this season. During the second week of AGT's Judges' Auditions, Matt spooked the audience and judges Simon Cowell, Sofia Vergara, Heidi Klum, and Howie Mandel with his death-defying audition. Based in Vancouver, Canada, Matt has over 30 years of experience in the entertainment industry and has performed in over 60 countries. In addition, he has thrilled audiences on various television shows, including Penn & Teller: Fool Us, Wizard Wars, Lorraine, The Late Late Show with James Corden, and The World's Best. Also, his routines have been viewed on YouTube over 500 million times. In 2019, Matt Johnson joined the international touring show – The Illusionists. The group performed directly from Broadway and toured across Mexico, Panama, and Saudi Arabia. He is also part of a unique group of acts that competed on America's Got Talent and Britain's Got Talent (BGT). Matt was the second most viewed act on BGT and was named the most dangerous act of BGT: Series 12, which aired in 2018. During our call, Matt shared his thoughts about the dangerous AGT audition. He also compared and contrasted his Got Talent shows' appearances and revealed which set of judges were more frightened by his routine.

David Parr is…well, a bit of an enigma in our world today. He took the rather circuitous path to eventually find his own way to happiness. If this sounds like an existential existence, then you’d be right. Like many of us, David has tried many paths, including comedy clubs and magic, before he settled on being a Bizarre Magician. His thoughts on the subject and how he sees this area of our art and how he got there is the subject of our conversation. As a Theater Major in school, he has always favored the dramatic and storytelling side of performing. Along the way, he blazed a trail for others to follow when magic was not considered a “theatrical art” but relegated to children’s birthday parties. He has learned how to find theaters and convince them to engage and partner with him for successful magic performances that tell stories.A CBS profile of magician David Parr, recorded at the haunted Brumder Mansion in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. WE COULD ALL USE A LITTLE MAGIC. Storytelling is an important part of everything you do. Whether you’re trying to sell something, speaking, or building relationships, you can’t ignore the power of story. It’s what causes us to have an emotional connection to something. Magic is an art form that uses storytelling. It’s not just about magic tricks. It’s about what you feel while you’re watching the trick. It’s about what the magician is telling you that changes your memory of the event. And it’s about how you take what you’re seeing and relate it to your story. How can you use the power of magic in your own life? On today’s episode of The School of Greatness, I’ve combined lessons about capturing your audience from some of the greatest magicians alive: Penn Jillette, Oz Perlman, Julius Dien, Derren Brown, and Lior Suchard. Derren Brown uses magic, suggestion, psychology, misdirection and showmanship to create series and specials on stage and television. He’s won two Laurence Olivier Awards for Best Entertainment and has also written books for magicians as well as the general public. Lior Suchard is considered to be the world’s greatest mentalist. His mind-blowing performances of thought influence, miraculous prediction and startling mind reading have made him the most sought after mentalist on the planet. He entertains audiences all over the world, which have brought him a list of fans stretching from A-list Hollywood celebrities to heads of state and notorious businessmen. Born and raised in London, Julius Dein has fast become one of the world’s most recognized social media stars. Mixing together mind-blowing magic with hilarious comedy and travel culture, Julius Dein has over 20 million followers across the internet. Oz Pearlman is a world-class entertainer and one of the busiest mentalists in the country. You might recognize him from America’s Got Talent where he placed third out of thousands of acts. Oz has also appeared on a variety of both national and international networks, a few of which include NBC’s Late Night with Jimmy Fallon, The TODAY Show & ABC World News and been profiled in Forbes, The New York Times, to name but a few. When he isn’t blowing the minds of audiences around the world, Oz is an avid marathon and ultra-marathon runner. Penn Jillette is a magician, actor, musician, inventor, television personality, and best-selling author best known for his work with fellow magician Teller as half of the team Penn & Teller. The duo has been featured in numerous stage and television shows such as Penn & Teller: Fool Us, and Penn & Teller: Bullshit!, and are currently headlining in Las Vegas at The Rio. He has published eight books, including the New York Times Bestseller, God, No!: Signs You May Already Be an Atheist and Other Magical Tales. All of these amazing magicians use the same tools to draw in their audience and capture their imaginations. It’s more than impressive tricks, flashing lights, or fancy outfits. So get ready to learn how to harness the power of storytelling on Episode 815. Some Questions I Ask: What is your greatest superpower, Darren Brown? (12:35) Do you feel like you had a good childhood? (17:10) How did you learn how to tell better stories? (19:25) Does mentalism have to do more with emotional intelligence or observed behavior? THE HARDEST THING TO DO WHEN YOU GET OLDER IS CHANGE A HABIT. There is a Buddhist metaphor of the elephant and the rider. We are all riding an elephant. We think that we are in control. We have the reigns. But the elephant could overpower us at any moment. No matter how much we use our minds, our emotions ultimately are more powerful. This applies to the way we eat. We become slaves to our cravings and desires. Sometimes it takes something big to get back in control of our “elephant.” On today’s episode of The School of Greatness, I talk about changing habits, being authentic, and what it takes to build the longest running act in Vegas with one of the world’s most famous magicians: Penn Jillette. Not many people can keep a marriage together for over forty years, let alone a working partnership. Penn is someone who shows up authentically every day. He isn’t afraid to express his thoughts and values even though they upset some people. So get ready to learn how to doubt yourself less and care about the things that matter on Episode 814. Some Questions I Ask: Why do we live in so much fear when we’re safer than ever? (8:00) What are you most proud of in the last few years? (9:00) Which of your parents is the most influential in your life? (47:00) What’s the lesson you still need to learn about yourself? (54:00) Is there anything you wish you would have done differently in the last years? (1:01:00) What is your superpower? (1:09:00) In This Episode You Will Learn: About the “mono diet” (20:00) Penn’s thoughts on religion (40:00) What makes Penn and Teller successful as a partnership (58:00) About “effective altruism” (1:13:00) How empathy makes a great magician and artist (1:19:00) If you enjoyed this episode check out the video, show notes and more at www.lewishowes.com/814 and follow at instagram.com/lewishowes

Fans of the ITV magic series, Penn & Teller: Fool Us will remember, Chris Dugdale. Beginning his highly original trick backstage, its climax, onstage, took the breath away. Penn Gillette wasn’t fooled, but he did say that the trick was one that he and Teller would have been proud to perform. It doesn’t get much better than that. In gaming this month Mitch tried "Forza Horizon" and after a bit more Pokemon Go, Joe attempted to finish "Far Cry 4" but got distracted and went back to "Lego Marvel" to collect character tokens. We then talk TV with "Stranger Things", "Halt & Catch Fire", the third season of "Penn & Teller Fool Us" with new host Alyson Hannigan, and Mitch does a bit of cross-promotion and talks about "Hey, Hey...It's Saturday!" and his new Geekdudes spin-off podcast Hey, Hey...It's the Podcast which drops it's debut episode soon. After that it's movie talk with Joe following on from last month by watching "The Karate Kid II", going all 90's with martial arts in "The Perfect Weapon", college sexual experimentation in "Threesome", and over the top magic in "Now You See Me 2". Plus Mitch looks back at the casual racism in the 60's time capsule "They're A Weird Mob" and manages to compare "Suicide Squad" with wanky coffee. We even manage to squeeze in a bit more nostalgia for kids on bikes in the 80's along the way too!

Hier die Timecodes der einzelnen Abschnitte: 00:00:00 - Intro 00:00:28 - Begrüßung 00:08:28 - Claire gibt Shades of Blue auf 00:14:54 - Red Oaks 00:28:15 - Chelsea Does 00:39:03 - Lucifer 00:49:45 - Mercy Street 00:56:46 - The Magicians 01:14:13 - Penn & Teller: Fool Us 01:32:24 - Epilog Viel Spaß. This month no rain, and no topic either, but that doesn't mean we didn't have a lot to talk about. We hit "Angry Birds 2" on IOS and old Arcade classis on the MAME emulator before diving into TV with more from kisscartoon.me, magical tales in "Penn & Teller: Fool Us", FBI fun with "The Blacklist" and mad mexicans battling it out with "Lucha Underground: Ultima Lucha". We then have a giant list of films to tackle, with features "Mission Impossible: Rogue Nation", "Ant-Man", "Nightcrawler", "Taxi Driver" and a longer chat than it probably warrants for "Pitch Perfect 2". After that the movies continue with docos on true crime with "Crazy Love", Adam Carolla's "Winning: The Racing Life of Paul Newman" and incomplete super heroes in "The Death of Superman Lives". We even find some time to talk up the tennis doco spoof, "7 Days In Hell" and wrap up the show with a tribute to the Hot Rod himself, "Rowdy" Roddy Piper.
