EPISODE 557 - Ronald Okuaki Lieber - The Long Journey Out - from the place where I now am, the diary of that journeyAuthor's BioI am of Japanese and Jewish lineage, born in Tokyo, a late post WWII baby. I grew up moving every year until the age of 14 when my parents settled in Petersburg, VA. I graduated with a BS in Biology from the College of William and Mary, then served two years as a Peace Corp volunteer in the Nicoya Peninsula of Costa Rica. I returned to live in NYC and eventually graduated from the MFA Program at Columbia University. I later began psychoanalytic training at the Center for Modern Psychoanalytic Studies. After graduation, I became the Director of the institute and editor of its journal, Modern Psychoanalysis. I have been in private practice since 2001 as a licensed psychoanalyst and recently completed a plant medicine guide training program at the Center for Medicine Work in Philadelphia. My entrance into poetry begins with these lines from “Lines Composed a Few Miles above Tintern Abbey, On Revisiting the Banks of the Wye during a Tour. July 13, 1798” by William Wordsworth:And I have felt A presence that disturbs me with the joy Of elevated thoughts; a sense sublime Of something far more deeply interfused, Whose dwelling is the light of setting suns, And the round ocean and the living air, And the blue sky, and in the mind of man: A motion and a spirit, that impels All thinking things, all objects of all thought, And rolls through all things. Those lines form the basis of my book The Long Journey Out. I was a sophomore in college, adrift in the back of the room in a second semester composition class when the professor read those lines. They woke me from my stupor. There, in those lines, I heard a kindred voice that spoke to an experience I had, an LSD trip, that was, to borrow a cliché, awash in the ineffable, a boundless sense of oneness where any distinction between self and other sundered. That voice joined with another, “An unexamined life is life not worth living,” from which a path emerged, unknown to me at the time--and forgive if what follows sounds pretentious--that took me to Jung, the Peace Corps and Costa Rica, Gurdjieff, poetry, eastern doctrine through The I Ching and the Bhagavad Gita, the TS Eliot of The Four Quartets, Heidegger's Being and Time, the gospels of the New Testament, and too many other books to enumerate, and an abiding curiosity about the unconscious, thus the study and practice of Freud and psychoanalysis, meditation, making do in the East Village of the early 80s, Ashtanga yoga, domestity and two wives and two children, dabbling along the way into neuroscience, windsurfing, and cosmology. The book The Long Journey Out is, from the place where I now am, the diary of that journey.https://www.ronaldokuakilieber.com/Support the show___https://livingthenextchapter.com/podcast produced by: https://truemediasolutions.ca/Coffee Refills are always appreciated, refill Dave's cup here, and thanks!https://buymeacoffee.com/truemediaca
Completely new universes and deeper awarenesses can arise when we gather in sacred intimate conversations. That's why this podcast is in its 13th season! I knew how grateful I am for Marina's videography and photography at my last 4-5 retreats. I'm aware of how inspired I am at the personal, parental, spiritual and professional evolution I've witnessed coaching her and the gift of her vulnerability to our coaching community. I'm grateful for the contribution of her mastery in the realm of water rituals for my clients at retreats. However it wasn't until we sat down for this podcast that we really felt the massive impact of all these years working together, the impact on our friendship, sisterhood, professional relationship, personal and collective evolution. It's so good to reflect! Without reflection, the profound impact of these experiences stay concealed, like a hidden ripe fruit that we never got to sink our teeth into! Syncing our teeth into our glorious journey together, we also discussed... -How the first time I hired her, a client had made unconscious comment that pierced Marina's heart and I made sure to address it, integrate it and include her in the group's transformation- she felt safe and seen. -How exquisite it was to have her lead a couples water ritual in Costa Rica utilizing underwater photography and community to further bond and celebrate sacred partnership (setting the stage for a secret engagement proposal!) -How a client also in the film industry, publicly honored all the work Marina had done, the work of 7 to 10 people, and how extraordinary she is flowing in and out of her masculine and feminine energies -How our trust has grown over the years such that she stepped into support a client during a process where I was helping someone else. We felt each other having each other's back in combined service to my community- what a gift. -How we are no different than any other relationship, having a rupture that we repaired that led to the deepest bonding we ever shared as if we were two goddesses in a temple, downloading wisdom from the cosmos sitting beside the infinity pool on the beach in Isla Mujeres. -How my mentorship as an entrepreneur, a woman several decades older than her, yet also a woman of great vulnerability, transparency and honesty, has been a safe place for her to continue to grow over time, ending an old pattern of leaving if things got uncomfortable. -How her commitment to stay year after year coaching in my community has supported her sitting in the fire in her current romantic relationship while deepening her own relationship with herself in the face of anything, so inspiring! ➡️ Go check out patreon.com/allanapratt for Exclusive content! In late May, Costa Rican police arrived in central Pavones at 4 a.m.—dressed in body armor, rifles in hand, and gas masks on—to escort demolition crews. Their mission: tear down local businesses. Residents, caught off guard, had to scramble just to salvage food and goods from inside the buildings. Shockingly, the local government of Golfito appears to be backing developers and demolition teams over the very citizens they were elected to serve. At the heart of the issue is a controversial slate of proposed luxury real estate developments. These projects threaten to reshape Pavones—impacting the environment, limiting beach access, and displacing local, family-run businesses. On this episode of the Swell Season Surf Podcast, we are joined by Walter Brenes, a dedicated environmental lawyer standing alongside the local community against aggressive real estate developments. Walter shares the ongoing battle to protect Pavones' unique culture, environment, and heritage from gentrification and unlawful land concessions.
Mariana is an artist, cultural bridge and healing arts practitioner that I met through our mutual friend Jessica Begin. I was really impressed by Mariana's wisdom. She has a really interesting story and she weaves these different paths beautifully together. I trust you all will gain much from this episode. “I sold the coins for current pesos and went to the grocery store. I literally bought food for my family that day,” recalls Lobo Tiggre. In today's summer series themed on how precious metals can change and even save lives, he shares emotional moments of how silver coins came to the rescue. The first shock occurred in 1977:“My stack of cash is literally worth half of what it was the day before.” Decades later, in 1999, Lobo was driving to Costa Rica with his wife and three children when the job he was moving for vanished mid-journey. Stranded in Mexico with no income and mouths to feed, he turned to his old coin collection — a briefcase of silver he'd saved since childhood.“If I had had paper pesos, they would have been basically worthless. But instead, I had those pesos that had a smidgen of silver.”“That lesson didn't just save my life. It later saved my family.”Watch the video to hear Lobo's full story, a powerful reminder of why real money still matters.✅ FREE RESOURCESDownload the Ultimate Decision-Making Guide on Gold & Silver plus Daniela Cambone's Top 10 Lessons to safeguard your wealth (FREE)

I think you could probably go back and track the stages of grief, probably that is what I went through. But I think if you do it right, you end up at acceptance. And that's where I ended up. And that's not to say that I've fully accepted the idea that the golden toad is extinct. Personally, I do still hold out hope that it could still be out there in those forests." - Trevor Ritland This conversation is with Trevor Ritland, who—along with his twin brother Kyle—authored The Golden Toad. The book chronicles their remarkable journey into Costa Rica's cloud forest, once home to hundreds of brilliant golden toads that would emerge for just a few weeks each year—until, one day, they vanished without a trace. What began as a search for a lost species soon became something much more profound: a confrontation with ecological grief, a meditation on hope, and a powerful call to protect the natural world while we still can. They discuss their collaboration in their band Those Pretty Wrongs, exploring their songwriting process and creative dynamic. Luther provides additional perspective on their partnership and his own musical journey. The episode also touches on Jody's recent induction into the Grammy Hall of Fame and Luther's latest solo album. Throughout, the conversation highlights the importance of maintaining a joyful, pressure-free approach to creativity in music. IN THIS EPISODE: (00:00) Introducing Jody Stevens of Big Star (05:21) Jody’s early musical influences in Memphis (09:06) Rain on discovering Big Star in Costa Rica (15:22) John Fry's influence on Big Star's iconic sound (24:17) Working at Ardent Studios after Big Star (31:49) Changes in the music industry over time (47:50) Luther Russell is launched (49:17) Collaborative songwriting process for the band (56:32) Recording at Abbey Road with John Leckie (59:52) Luther Russell's new solo album Happiness for Beginners (1:02:39) Upcoming shows and future recording plans KEY TAKEAWAYS: Music creation should be a joyful, pressure-free process. By focusing on having fun and avoiding self-imposed stress, artists can collaborate effectively long-distance and produce multiple albums together. This approach has allowed creativity to flow naturally. The music industry has changed dramatically, but there are still "gatekeepers" in new forms. While technology has democratized distribution, the sheer volume of content makes it challenging to break through. Having a passionate fanbase who will share your music remains crucial. Revisiting and performing older material can lead to unexpected new creative partnerships. What started as playing some shows together to support a documentary evolved into a fruitful songwriting collaboration and multiple albums. Being open to these opportunities can take your career in exciting new directions. RESOURCE LINKS: LaunchLeft Podcast Smart Link JODY STEPHENS BIO: Jody Stephens (born October 4, 1952, in Memphis, Tennessee) is an American drummer best known as a founding member of the influential power pop band Big Star. The band released three albums—#1 Record (1972), Radio City (1974), and Third/Sister Lovers (recorded in 1974, released in 1978)—which, despite initial commercial struggles, later garnered critical acclaim and influenced numerous artists . In 1993, he participated in a reformation of the band alongside Chilton and members of The Posies, resulting in the 2005 album In Space. Beyond Big Star, Stephens has collaborated with various groups. He joined the alt-country supergroup Golden Smog (with Jeff Tweedy of Wilco), contributing to albums like Weird Tales (1998) and Another Fine Day (2006) . In 2015, he formed Those Pretty Wrongs with Luther Russell, releasing their self-titled debut in 2016, followed by Zed for Zulu (2019) and Holiday Camp (2023) . Hello, everyone! It's been a minute since ABC aired a season of Bachelor in Paradise, and let me tell you, I am READY for the debauchery. As long as the golden bachelor and bachelorettes are more of a mentor situation, I'm here for the shenanigans that will unfold on the beaches of Costa Rica. Does Some Guy in Austin remember half of these people? No. But that's why I'm here!
