This week's show has a decidedly football-oriented theme (sorry) and not just because Boydy was still on a high after Arsenal's win but because James Graham's award-winning theatre production Dear England lands on our screens (1:31:40), given the full BBC1 treatment. And along those lines, both Jodie Whittaker and Joseph Fiennes join us on the show to talk all about it (44:07-58:24). Elsewhere, we slide back into the 1930s in a hardboiled gumshoe detective story with a superhero twist in Spider-Noir on Prime (1:13:37), and see if Netflix's OAP Stranger Things, The Boroughs, lives up to its pedigree (1:36:09).Note: time stamps are approximate as the ads throw them out, so are only meant as a guide. If you want to avoid this and would like the podcast entirely ad-free (as well as 17 hours early, with a second weekly show and spoiler specials) then sign up to Pilot+!

A Hamster With a Blunt Penknife - a Doctor Who Commentary podcast
A delightful episode celebrating Jodie Whittaker and the 13th Doctor and determining the Strictly Come Hamster best episode of the era...
Tread Perilously's annual Doctor Who month continues with "Fugitive of the Judoon." Gloucester resident Ruth Clayton is well-liked by locals, but her attempts to sell visitors on a guided tour is often met with shrugs. She's okay with it, though, as she's happily married and celebrating her 44th birthday. But when a troop of Judoon put Gloucester in a suspension field, The Doctor arrives to learn why they are so interested in Ruth and her husband. Is it possible she is more than just another tour guide? Meanwhile, Yaz, Graham and Ryan meet Captain Jack Harkness. It goes as well as you think. Justin finally meets the Fugitive Doctor! He also finds more reasons to like Jodie Whittaker as the Thirteenth Doctor. Tosin Cole finally makes an impression as Ryan, while Mandip Gill remains solid as Yaz and Bradley Walsh excels as Graham. The local baker, though, proves to have too much character and John Barrowman's return as Captain Jack leads down a valley of disclaimers. Any photo of someone on a phone proves to be immediately suspicious. Erik finds legitimate reason to praise co-writer Chris Chibnall. Justin recognizes a guest actor from The Umbrella Academy. The pair continue to make suggestions for the Sixteenth Doctor and Justin, at long last, understands what it means to be a Doctor Who fan.

It will be exclusively available to buy from the Big Finish website until 31 May 2026, and on general sale after this date. The Doctor and Yaz arrive in the East End of London, 1926. There's grief in the air: not only the years of war and sickness, but a more recent death. A strange message prompts them to investigate the murder of a medium. A young woman whose seances hide deeper secrets - and an unearthly power that threatens the entire city. "Speaking to the dead is a dangerous and - quite literally - haunting business, and even more so in this era. I've loved writing Yaz and the Doctor's challenging, loyal, heartfelt dynamic as they investigate both a series of murders and their own losses - I hope listeners enjoy it as much as I did." Lead actor Jodie Whittaker said: "It's a really beautiful script, with ghostly elements explored in a very unique way, and so many different characters of different ages as well - people whose grief is through loss of a family, and young people who've lost someone instantly. And it touches on the Spanish flu, which, now we all know what it's like to live through a pandemic, feels incredibly relevant." Her co-star Mandip Gill added: "When I first read The Violet Hour, I was a bit scared because I'm actually scared of ghosts! But then I got quite excited because we've not touched on this before, and it's exciting to pop back to the East End in the 1920s." And, producer Noga Flaishon said: "Working with Rafaella Marcus was wonderful. I adore their work across theatre and audio, and they were amongst the first writers I pitched for this series. The plot is so suspenseful and spooky, and this was the first - and so far only - time I shed tears in the control room during a recording... the words ripped my heart out on this one."

Send a textThis week on Nerdery and Murdery, we take a sharp turn into the strange, the unsettling, and the unexpectedly human. On the Nerdery side, Zig continues the Doctor Who journey with The 13th Doctor, portrayed by Jodie Whittaker breaking new ground for the Doctor and sparking plenty of debate along the way. What worked, what didn't, and why this era still matters. Then on the Murdery side, Geoffrey counts down his Top Ten Weird or Strange Murders. Cases so bizarre they sound fictional…but absolutely aren't. From decapitation love triangles and killer clowns to cannibalism by consent, locked-room hotel deaths, ritual panic, and Cold War assassinations, this list goes far beyond the usual true-crime fare.Inspired by a tip from Mike Shanks of 2 Geeks and a Microphone, this episode dives headfirst into the rabbit hole examining not just the crimes, but the unsettling circumstances that make them linger in your mind.Dark. Strange. Thought-provoking. Let's get weird. Support the show

It will be exclusively available to buy from the Big Finish website until 31 March 2026, and on general sale after this date. The Doctor and Yaz have been sent a list of coordinates, each one pointing to a location in time and space where people are disappearing - but why? The trail leads to a war-torn world, where conscripted humans battle the terrifying Banshee. Can the Doctor end this conflict before she loses her best friend? Please note: the collector's edition CDs have now sold out. Recorded on: 25 and 27 June 2025 Recorded at: Fitzrovia Post Writer Rochana Patel said: "The Thirteenth Doctor Adventures really are incredibly special. This TARDIS team still feel fresh from their TV adventures, which means we can do modern and relevant storytelling, in a way that wouldn't sit quite right in other ranges. "As such, I threw absolutely everything I could into Ride or Die, to make it feel like a hard-edged, contemporary, science-fiction drama. There's no cosiness or nostalgia here, and as a result, this one certainly isn't your average episode! Plus, in the background, there's an even bigger story arc starting to unfold..." Mandip Gill said: "Yaz meets an old friend, Megan, and there's history there. Megan had a crush on Yaz which Yaz wasn't sure about. So, when Megan brings it up, it makes her think about what it is that she feels about the Doctor. She's stopped in her tracks by somebody from back home reminding her that this might not go on forever, and that she needs to stay in touch with reality." Jodie Whittaker added: "I thought this was an amazing story. It feels very timely. The discussion of profits of war and violence is a very important theme at the moment. What's fascinating about the Doctor is that they never give up hope, they're always there to guide humans to make the right choices. And I really love that about the Thirteenth Doctor, particularly how she always has so much energy even when she's hitting herself against a wall continually!" We reviewed Lionesses in our last podcast (so check it out!) and thankfully (spoiler alert!) we both loved it - so no embarrassing conversations there!Instead we had a great chat with Lisa discussing not only the inspiration behind Lionesses in Winter but also the projects she could only hint at the last time she joined our show in February 2023! These include stories for Call Me Master, The Ninth Doctor and Rose, The Fugitive Doctor Adventures and many many more!PLUS! Geoff gets angry about AI, Paul chokes on his cuppa tea, AND we subject Lisa to our TIME SPACE VISUALISER so she can tell us what she's been enjoying outside the worlds of Doctor Who! We're joined by a BAFTA winner for an easy-to-make, extra tasty dinner and a spoonful of dessert. Suranne Jones' acting credits are a must-watch list of shows including Doctor Foster, Vigil, Gentleman Jack and Coronation Street. Add to that list her new show, Frauds, a heist-driven thriller in which she stars alongside Jodie Whittaker. On the menu for this episode is seared tuna with braised tomatoes & chickpeas, paired on this occasion with a Telmont Champagne Reserve Brut NV - a special accompaniment and a favourite of Suranne's when she is drinking. This is followed by a perfectly seasonal autumn apple & blackberry crumble. Suranne's a bad influence in Frauds, but pure joy and excellent vibes around the Dish table, bringing a list of food likes and dislikes that matches, and maybe surpasses, the one brought by Benedict Cumberbatch. We get into the magic of Oldham, the power of Corrie and the appeal of Doctor Foster... and Suranne quickly comes clean that she's a Dish superfan having listened to ALL episodes while on set for her new show. We salute you! You can watch full episodes of Dish on YouTube and, new for this season, on Spotify. Meanwhile, Tom Blyth stops by to talk Billy The Kid (1:14:38-1:28:46), which you CAN see on MGM+. Also, we try to discover why people want to hide GLen Powell's face in Chad Powers on Disney+ (1:28:46), see what Jodie Whittaker and Suranne Jones are up to over on ITV with Frauds (1:37:32), and get mental health advice from an unlikely source on BBC1 with How Are You?
