**** [Retro Re-issue Alert!] **** Turns out it wasn't such a great idea to use Le Tigre's "What's Yr Take on Cassavetes?" as our podcast's theme song in 2019 and 2020! Anyway, Spotify (and presumably Le Tigre) don't seem to think so. Accordingly, please find the attached re-issue of one of our foundational episodes, minus the intro music + a couple of words of greeting from Elise. Consider it a fragment shored against our (Julie) Ruin. First issued: August 23, 2019 This week's episode serves as both a prolegomenon to our imminent Hollywood Studios Year By Year series and as a wistful look back to Dave's teen years, when he picked up Ethan Mordden's freewheeling speed date with Old Hollywood History and discovered a new way to split the difference between Adornian culture industry theory and auteurist ontology. Journey back to a time when oligopoly really meant something and most entertainment companies weren't somehow beholden to Disney. We quote from and quibble with Mordden's characterizations of the quintessential qualities of Paramount, MGM, Warner Brothers, Fox, RKO, and Universal (Dave gets particularly riled up about yet another slight to the sacred memory of Carl Laemmle Jr.). On this week's Talkhouse Podcast we've got a legend of ‘90s-era punk in deep conversation with a songwriter you might be hearing of for the first time: Kathleen Hanna and Jim Andralis. Hanna, of course, was a founding member of Bikini Kill, the band credited with starting the riot grrrl movement and inspiring an incredible number of young women to pick up guitars and claim their place in the rock universe. After Bikini Kill's initial split, Hanna went on to perform in both The Julie Ruin and Le Tigre, though recent years have found her spitting fire with Bikini Kill yet again—they're actually on tour now through September. Hanna also released an excellent memoir this year called Rebel Girl: My Life as a Feminist Punk, which is absolutely worth a read or an audiobook listen—Hanna reads it herself, and it's awesome. Hanna's people approached us about having her chat with songwriter Jim Andralis because, as you'll hear in this chat, she might be his biggest fan. Andralis is a New Yorker whose day job is as a trauma-focused psychotherapist, but who's been writing songs for the past 20 or so years. Considering Hanna's fandom, it might surprise you to learn that Andralis doesn't come out of the punk tradition at all: He's a songwriter in the classic sense, meaning it's tough to pin him into a genre box—Kathleen tries a little bit here, but doesn't come to any conclusions. Andralis recently released his fifth album, Ghosts, check out a song they chat about toward the end of this episode, it's called “Carnival.” Hanna and Andralis jump right into their chat here, and you can tell they're old friends. As you'll hear at the top, Hanna and her band were recently honored by Olympia, Washington with Bikini Kill Day, celebrating a lifetime of achievements. After that, Hanna gets straight to picking Andralis' brain about his lyrics and songwriting. She interprets one song in particular that turns out to be… not quite right, but also exactly right? You'll see. Enjoy. 0:00 – Intro 2:48 – Happy Bikini Kill Day! 9:26 – Kathleen tries to figure out what genre Jim's songs belong in 21:07 – Jim's song about political depression 32:48 – An appreciation of Jamey Johnson 39:05 – "What a dick, if I had written the song that way!" Thanks for listening to the Talkhouse Podcast and thanks to Kathleen Hanna and Jim Andralis for chatting. Kathleen Hanna is a punk icon, a pioneer of the riot grrrl movement, and one of the most influential feminists of the ‘90s. As the frontwoman of Bikini Kill, Le Tigre and The Julie Ruin, she's empowered women to feel liberated over their bodies and minds. Now, she's released a gripping new memoir, “Rebel Girl,” in which she details the abuse she endured by men throughout her life, the terror she often felt on stage, and her path to becoming a champion of women. Kathleen joins Tom to look back on her life and career.
Gina Birch, Kathleen Hanna, Mark Moore, and Stephen McRobbie how their teenage years influenced their path into music, how it felt to be doing something creative and combative for a living, and being at peace with themselves later in life. Gina Birch was inspired to form post punk band the Raincoats after seeing the Slits in 1977. They recorded their self-titled debut album that same year, and went on to record three further albums, the last of which was released in 1996. She is also a film-maker and painter, and staged her first solo show last year. After around 45 years in the business, she recently released her debut solo album I Play My Bass Loud. Kathleen Hanna is an American singer, musician and pioneer of the feminist punk riot grrrl movement. She co-formed punk band Bikini Kill in 1990, and went on to form Le Tigre in 1998, and The Julie Ruin in 2010. She's currently on tour with Le Tigre. Mark Moore is a British dance music record producer and DJ. In 1998 he topped the UK chart with his pioneering dance act S'Express and their legendary track Theme From S'Express. He is engrained in the history of UK club culture and is hugely influential to both UK dance and pop music. Stephen McRobbie is the frontman and founder member of the cult Glasgow indie rock band The Pastels. They formed in 1981, have released 5 studio albums, and are cited as influences on everyone from The Jesus and Mary Chain to Primal Scream, Sonic Youth, Yo La Tengo, and Nirvana.

This week we discuss Kathleen Hanna's 1997 self-titled side-project, Julie Ruin, and Grouper's Dragging a Dead Deer Up a Hill. Other things we talk about the Spaghett drink, lo-fi, bedroom pop, DIY, indulging in mistakes, and how much these albums make us want to play music.
Hey grrrlies, in this episode we jump into the history of the Riot Grrrl movement, starting in Olympia in the early 90s as a backlash to the male-dominated Punk scene. We play some songs by some women in punk in the 70s who made this all possible: the Slits, X Ray Spex, and Patti Smith. Of course we delve into Kathleen Hanna (happy belated birthday!) and her projects which defined the movement: Bikini Kill, Le Tigre, and Julie Ruin. We get into some other first-gen Riot Grrrl acts, as well as some of my suggestions for some modern-day women and non-binary folks who deserve the title of Riot Grrrls just as much. Love rock revolution girl style now!
We're back earlier than expected with a special episode. Last week, YIVO streamed a lecture as part of the Uriel Weinreich Yiddish Summer Program on the topic “Yiddish Women Writers.” (See and hear the lecture here). The lecturer, Professor Avraham Noversthern, wanted to be controversial… and, well, he succeeded in that mission! In this episode, Jessica Kirzane, Faith Jones, and Ayelet Brinn delve into what made Novershtern's arguments so controversial, and how his claims run counter to the scholarship of a number of female academics. We also talk about the intersections between power dynamics, gender, age, and language ability in the Yiddish World. Perhaps most importantly, we also used this opportunity to offer and promote a variety of resources for Vaybertaytshniks who want to learn more about Yiddish women writers. Two generations of feminist punk icons, Kathleen Hanna (Bikini Kill, Le Tigre, the Julie Ruin) and Meredith Graves (Perfect Pussy, MTV News), sat down at the flagship SONOS store in New York for an in-depth episode of the Talkhouse Music Podcast. They’re big fans of each other’s music, and this fantastic talk covers capitalism, rocking gunnysacks, trolls, today’s definition of punk, feminism, chronic illness, stalkers, the “Etsy-fication of riot grrrl," why we should vote for Hillary Clinton, and, as Kathleen says, how she and Meredith have “been living parallel lives like twenty, thirty years apart." Grrl on Grrl: intersectional and trans-inclusive music & interview show
For episode 5, Lori and I got together in her living room to chat about the history of her earlier bands, being a woman on stage and being extra scrutinized because of it, and other topics about women in the music industry. She's a badass drummer for the two-piece band Gloomsday that she plays in with her boyfriend Justin and has always played bass and guitar in several other bands including Ladyparts and the Rosalyns--the latter got to play with The Julie Ruin and other rad women musicians at the Orange County festival Burger-a-go-go.

Steve from Retro Man Blog talks to Rock Photographer Paul Slattery about his recent trip to France to see two gigs from his favourite band of the past 40 years, The Flamin' Groovies. Paul also spins some tunes by some other French bands such as The Sharpers, Kas Product and Les Grys Grys and picks some highlights from the Canadian/French Canadian Punk scene such as NoMeansNo, D.O.A., Corrigan Fest and Banlieu Rouge. There's also a classic from Vic Godard & Subway Sect, a new one from Kathleen Hanna's latest band The Julie Ruin, a prime piece of powerful Rock and Roll from the Electric Shakes and a run-out groove featuring Alvin Lee's Ten Years After. Check out www.retromanblog.com for Paul's full report on his French travels with The Flamin' Groovies and some excellent exclusive photographs.

Episode 16 is here! Sorry for the technical difficulties from the previous episode. I finally resolved them by just reuploading the episode. KATHLEEN HANNA is a bad ass. As one of the very first women in the punk scene, Hanna led the way and inspired musicians, from Carrie Brownstein to Kurt Cobain. Proudly a feminist, Hanna quickly won a loyal fan base starting when she was the lead singer of Bikini Kill. Smart, fun, and a formidable presence, Hanna has reinvented herself through out her career and currently performs with The Julie Ruin. Hanna is the subject of the documentary The Punk Singer, which is currently out in theaters. I hope that every school ensures kids watch the documentary Punk Singer as it reveals how the Riot Grrrl Movement greatly influenced Third Wave Feminism and for the first time in history (pun intended) gave a voice to the legal, psychological and social ramifications of sexual violence and sexual harassment. The film also reveals what it takes to be a rock star. http://www.thepunksinger.com Our interview was taped live at Upright Citizens Brigade Theater. The next live taping of Employee of the Month is March 14th...
