  Welcome back to the  Dr. Mary Travelbest Guide podcast.   The FAQ: While planning a trip to Taiwan and South Korea, someone I was guiding asked, "Is 911 a universal emergency code worldwide?" I looked into this and found a helpful answer. Here's the answer: 911 is not universal. Abroad, the number differs, and sometimes each service has its own. Commonly: 112 in the EU, 112/999 in the UK and Ireland, 000 in Australia, 111 in New Zealand, 110/119 in Japan, and 112/119 in South Korea. For Europe, 112 is the key number to remember. It works everywhere in the EU, is free, and will connect you to emergency services from any phone. In the UK, both 999 and 112 work. A few country-specific examples matter because they can trip up travelers. Australia's main emergency number is 000; the government says 112 can also be connected from mobile phones there, but 000 is the primary number. New Zealand uses 111 for police, fire, and ambulance services, and 105 for police non-emergencies. Japan uses 110 for police and 119 for fire/ambulance. In South Korea, 112 is for police, and 119 for fire/ambulance/medical emergencies. Tourism guidance says you can ask for an interpreter by saying "English please" or "Interpreter please." What else should travelers know beyond the number? Don't assume 911 works overseas. In some places, it may redirect, but don't rely on it. Know the local emergency number before you travel. Always know your location—hotel, street, intersection, train station, or landmark—for fast communication with emergency operators. When calling, clearly state which service you need: police, ambulance, or fire. Save your embassy or consulate number, but call local emergency services first. If you are in the EU, official guidance notes that 112 is free and available on public and mobile phones. One more thing to consider in my response to the question is that emergency numbers are for urgent danger only. Some countries also have non-emergency numbers. For example, New Zealand uses 105 for non-emergency police matters, while the UK uses 101. Knowing that helps you avoid tying up emergency lines. In summary, solo travelers should memorize 112 for Europe, and always look up the emergency number for each country before traveling. Before each trip, put the following items in your phone notes and in your bag: local emergency number, hotel address, embassy/consulate contact, travel insurance emergency line, and one family contact. Not too crowded, not too complicated, but just enough unknown to stretch you in the best way. Let's start with the journey. I took the Blue Star ferry from Athens around noon, passing through Paros on the way. Round-trip from Athens port was about $85 with a Eurail discount of 30% The ferry ride is part of the experience. It's calm. It's scenic. It gives you time to sit, read, think,  or do nothing at all. And for many of us, doing nothing is the hardest and most valuable skill to relearn. The hotel where I stayed was called the Galina, a short 300-meter walk from the water and beach. It was run by two brothers whose parents founded it over 40 years ago. The room was delightful, and the location was excellent. The breakfast I had the morning before leaving was perfect, featuring all the delicious Greek foods I wanted to try, and I ate my fill. It was included in the room price, which was about $85 US, and it was definitely worth it because I completely relaxed and enjoyed my stay.   During my time on Naxos, I went swimming twice and enjoyed walking around the island. I loved getting lost while exploring the shops selling a variety of merchandise like T-shirts and knick-knacks. it was a treat! I didn't buy anything, but just looking around made me feel great. I also had a nice dinner at a restaurant called Taverna, which cost $21. I ordered shrimp served on a plate with rice and salad, along with skewers of meat (souvlaki). Naxos is not a rush through destination. I swam twice at St. George Beach. I  wandered the old town and got completely lost in the castle area, the Venetian Astro district. And here's something worth questioning: When was the last time you allowed yourself to get lost on purpose? No Google Maps. No urgency. Just curiosity. Because that's where confidence grows, not in perfect plans, but in small uncertainties. I'll talk more about getting lost in my mistakes later on. "On an island, it's usually easy to find your way back" was one of my thoughts while exploring. One of my favorite moments was hiking up St. George Hill, past an abandoned restaurant, to catch the sunset. The place was run down, with graffiti and weeds that made it look cluttered. But the views were magnificent. No crowds. No ticket. Just a view that reminded me why I travel. And then there's the Portara, the Temple of Apollo. Just a 10–15 minute walk from town, sitting dramatically at the edge of the sea. We watched each other's belongings when we wanted to go swimming. If I had more time, and you should plan for it, I would visit: More beaches beyond St. George and The museums in the Venetian castle. Here is more of the history you will learn while in the area. Naxos is a Greek island in the South Aegean, the largest of the Cyclades (sic la deeze), spelled Cyclades, a group of islands. Its fertile landscape spans mountain villages, ancient ruins, and long stretches of beach. The namesake capital (also called Hora or Chora) is a port town filled with whitewashed, cube-shaped houses and medieval Venetian mansions. I really did for fifteen days on Duolingo. However, I still struggled.And here's the truth: you don't need to be fluent. But you do need to be willing to try—and to feel a little uncomfortable. That's part of Step 5 travel. Greek is harder to learn than I thought. I've been using Greek Duolingo for the past 15 days, but it hasn't helped me as much as I hoped. It has been an experience nonetheless; I've learned a few Greek letters, but I still struggle to pronounce any words. Because when a place makes you feel relaxed that quickly, that's rare. If you're building your confidence as a solo traveler in Greece as a Step 5 newbie, Start with a place like Naxos. Easy ferry access Walkable town Safe, welcoming vibe Plenty to do—but no pressure to do it all Are you traveling to check off places on a list… or actually to feel something? Here is why many travelers end up loving Naxos: It gives you sand, swimming, and a real town. It has more of a lived-in, less staged feeling than some headline islands. You can combine beach time, sunset views, old alleys, and inland villages without needing a huge travel plan. Or expense. It works well for people who want Greece to feel pleasant and manageable. When Naxos is not the best pick: Pick Crete if you want the deepest mix of archaeology, cities, dramatic nature, and a longer, road-trip-style island trip. Pick Sardinia if your main goal is exceptional Italian beaches and a larger standalone Mediterranean holiday. Pick Santorini if the caldera views are the whole point. Pick Mykonos if nightlife and scene matter a lot.  Naxos is often the better island for people who actually want to relax and feel Greece, not just check off the most famous name. My missteps: Getting lost in Athens   The hostel manager pointed outside. "Don't go that way when you leave," and I did not ask for details, assuming it was a bad area with a high crime rate. I did get lost a few times nearby, though, finding my way back. I may have walked that way by accident. Here's my detailed story: I found the metro station from the airport, which served the modern, faster blue line. I changed lines at Monastiraki and arrived at Omonia Square, but I got a bit lost. The neighborhood was quite confusing and not very safe, with only small markets around. I felt scared at times. Savienoto Valstu prezidents Donalds Tramps cer, ka citas pasaules valstis nāks viņam palīgā karā ar Irānu, vispirms jau lai atvērtu drošajam tranzītam tirdzniecības ceļu cauri Hormuza šaurumu. Tomēr Eiropa nav gatava vēl vienam karam, tāpēc Trampam nācās piekāpties teikt, ka amerikāņi tiks galā paši. Vēl viena valsts citā reģionā, kas ir nonākusi pamatīgā krīzē, ir Kuba. Ziņas, kas pienāk no sociālistiskās salas, liek jautāt, vai daudzus gadu desmitus tur valdošajam režīmam nav pienākusi "x" stunda? Aktualitātes analizē Ģeopolitikas pētījumu centra vecākais pētnieks Jānis Kažociņš un laikraksta "Diena" komentētājs Andis Sedlenieks.  Kuba – nākamais Trampa eksperiments? Pagājušajā piektdienā, 13. martā, Kubas prezidents Migels Diass-Kanels publiski atzina, ka viņa valdība ir iesaistījusies sarunās ar Savienoto Valstu administrāciju. Tādējādi konkrētākas aprises ieguva pieņēmumi, ka Kuba, viens no pēdējiem totalitārā komunisma sistēmas reliktiem mūsdienu pasaulē, varētu kļūt par mērķi nākamajai Donalda Trampa aizrobežu kontroles palielināšanas operācijai. Katrā ziņā valsts sekretārs Marko Rubio, kubiešu emigrantu atvase, visai nepārprotami licis manīt, ka Vašingtonas mērķis ir režīma maiņa Havanā. Kā zināms, šis režīms tur pastāv kopš 1959. gada, kad kreisā „26. jūlija kustība” ar Fidelu Kastro priekšgalā gāza līdz tam valdījušo diktatūru un padarīja Kubu par sociālistiski orientētu Padomju Savienības satelītu Rietumu puslodē. 2019. gadā režīms gan piedzīvoja zināmu liberalizāciju, kad konstitūcijas reforma atgrieza politiskajā sistēmā vairākas demokrātijām raksturīgas institūcijas un normas, legalizēja privāto kapitālu un ārvalstu investīcijas, tiesiskajā sistēmā atjaunoja nevainīguma prezumpcijas un prettiesiskas ieslodzīšanas aizlieguma principus. Tomēr Kubas Komunistiskās partijas vadošā loma un komunisma celtniecība kā valsts pastāvēšanas mērķis konstitūcijā palika, un pašreizējais prezidents Diass-Kanels ir tipisks padomju stila autoritārs līderis, kurš kopš 2021. gada ieņem arī partijas pirmā sekretāra amatu. Ciešākais režīma sabiedrotais reģionā līdz nesenam laikam bija Venecuēla, un zīmīgi, ka 3. janvāra operācijas laikā Karakasā gāja bojā trīsdesmit divi kubiešu militāristi un specdienestu darbinieki. ASV embargo tirdzniecībai ar Kubu ir spēkā kopš 1960. gada, un ir ilglaicīgākais šādu sankciju precedents mūsdienu vēsturē. Kopš šī gada janvāra Vašingtona īsteno pret Kubu naftas blokādi, un tas draud ar pilnīgu energosistēmas paralīzi salā, kura nu jau pāris gadus piedzīvo visai smagus elektroenerģijas padeves pārtraukumus. Valsts transporta un veselības aprūpes sistēmas esot uz sabrukuma sliekšņa. Kā galvenais Havanas režīma pārstāvis sarunās ar Savienotajām Valstīm tiek minēts Rauls Rodrigess Kastro. Viņa vectēvs Rauls Kastro kļuva par Kubas kompartijas pirmo sekretāru 2011. gadā, kad šo amatu pameta viņa vecākais brālis un ilggadējais režīma vadonis Fidels. 2021. gadā vectēvs Rauls, tobrīd deviņdesmitgadīgs, nodeva varas grožus Diasam-Kanelam, tomēr mazdēla Raula Rodrigesa loma sarunās apliecina, ka Kastro dzimta, lai gan tās pārstāvji vairs neieņem kādu no nozīmīgākajiem valsts posteņiem, ir joprojām ietekmīga. Kubas diplomātiskās misijas vadītāja ASV, Lianisa Torresa Rivera, uzsvērusi, ka Kubas politiskā sistēma un sociālistiskais modelis neesot apspriežami jautājumi. Pagaidām Havanas vara piesolījusi kā labas gribas žestu atbrīvot piecdesmit vienu politieslodzīto. Kopš 2021. gada, kad Kubā izcēlās plaši pret režīmu vērsti protesti, režīma cietumos tiek turēti apmēram 1200 politieslodzītie. Hormuza „Šaurā Bezizeja” Vakar, 17. martā, no Teherānas pienākušās ziņas vēlreiz apliecina sabiedroto gaisa spēku un izlūkošanas efektivitāti – gaisa triecienā nogalināts Irānas drošības padomes vadītājs Ali Laridžāni, pēdējos mēnešos nereti minēts kā patiesais režīma līderis. Tāds pats liktenis piemeklējis bēdīgi slavenās paramilitārās organizācijas „Bāsidž” komandieri Golamrezā Soleimāni. Lai nu kurš, bet šie vīri darīja visu, lai viņu atrašanās vieta nebūtu viegli konstatējama. Kas attiecas uz Modžtabu Hāmenejī, kurš pirms desmit dienām ieņēma Irānas garīgā līdera posteni nogalinātā tēva vietā, tad viņš publiskajā telpā joprojām nav manīts, un arvien ticamāka šķiet versija, ka jaunais rahbars tiešām nogādāts Maskavā, ciktāl arī smagi cietis uzlidojumā. Vērienīgai atriebei par savu komandieru nāvi Irānai acīmredzot trūkst jaudas, tomēr tās raķešu triecieni vakar laupījuši dzīvības diviem izraēliešiem un vienam Abū Dabī iedzīvotājam. Pēdējās nedēļas laikā globālās uzmanības degpunktā arvien vairāk izvirzījies Hormuza šaurums, kas paliek bloķēts lielākajai daļai kuģu satiksmes. Deficīts globālajā naftas tirgū tiek raksturots kā dramatiskākais kopš pagājušā gadsimta septiņdesmito gadu naftas krīzes un apjomos plašākais jebkad pieredzētais. „Brent” marķējuma jēlnaftas cena joprojām svārstās ap 100 dolāriem par barelu, un tiek lēsts, ka tikai Starptautiskās enerģētikas aģentūras dalībvalstu lēmums iepludināt tirgū četrsimt miljonu barelu no savām stratēģiskajām rezervēm liedz tai kāpt vēl augstāk. Saūda Arābija un Apvienotie Arābu emirāti daļēji kompensē tranzītu caur Hormuzu, izmantojot naftas vadus uz ostām Sarkanās jūras un Arābijas jūras piekrastē, taču to maksimālā kapacitāte ir ekvivalenta apmēram ceturtajai daļai no ierastās plūsmas cauri šaurumam. Irāna gan paziņojusi, ka cauri Hormuzam ļauts kuģot Ķīnas, Indijas, Pakistānas un arī NATO dalībvalsts Turcijas kuģiem, un tiek ziņots, ka daži šo valstu kuģi patiešām šķērsojot šaurumu pa īpašu maršrutu gar Irānas krastiem. Sākot ar 15. martu Savienoto Valstu prezidents Donalds Tramps sociālo tīklu publikācijās un intervijās sāka paust prasību, lai Hormuza šauruma problēmas militārā risinājumā iesaistās arī citas valstis, bet 16. martā paziņoja, ka, ja nesagaidīs pretimnākšanu, tas būšot, citējot, „ļoti slikti NATO nākotnei”. Gaidītā militārā entuziasma vilnis no partneru puses tomēr izpalika. Kā viņu viedokļa kvintesenci pasaules prese visbiežāk citē Vācijas aizsardzības ministra Borisa Pistoriusa pirmdien teikto: „Tas nav mūsu karš, mēs to nesākām.” Ar dažādām diplomātiskās stilistikas niansēm no praktiski visām Eiropas galvaspilsētām izskan, ka ja kāds vēlas partneru iesaistīšanos tik nopietnā pasākumā kā karš, viņam būtu jāpapūlas informēt šos partnerus par saviem plāniem un kara mērķiem. Galu galā vakar pievakarē, uzņemot Baltajā namā Īrijas premjerministru Maiklu Mārtinu, mājastēvs paziņoja, ka Amerikai nekādu palīdzību nevajagot, tiesa, palīgos nenācēji esot nepateicīgi. Sun, salty air, and delicious foods and wonderful hospitality. Today we are traveling to Greece, but we're going to take you a little off the beaten path as we discover some of our favorite islands you may have never heard of before. We'll travel on planes and ferry boats as we explore places to stay, magnificent food, and gorgeous waters that are calling your name. So pack your swimsuit and maybe a couple of outfits and let's get started on an adventure you will never forget. When people think of Greece, they imagine the Parthenon, the Acropolis or maybe one of the cruise port Islands such as Mykonos or Santorini. Today we want to take you deeper into Greece and explore a few minor islands that are part of the Greek Cyclades in the Aegean sea. Our journey starts on the popular Island of Santorini and we talk to our friend Suzanne who booked an unusual experience and got to see parts of Santorini most tourists don't. We will also tell you where we recommend you stay near Oia that's a bit more hidden. Then we will go further off the beaten path as we island hop over to Milos, Sifnos, Paros, and Antiparos. We used the Sea Sickness Bands but recently Scott purchased a Relief Band and loves it so far. We found that Amex was not widely accepted. Also have a way easily and regularly get cash out (alert your bank of your travel plans as well). Here is the travel credit card we are loving right now. Plan to rent a car and book ahead of time. Don't overpack (hear our tips here) and we definitely recommend a good travel backpack. We love the Ebags and took it on this trip. Pojedinci na različitim delovima Kube stupali su u proteste, podizali su svoj glas i naknadno su bili proganjani, hapšeni i osuđivani u politički montiranim procesima. Danas, više od 1300 osoba nalazi se u kubanskim zatvorima kao politički zatvorenici.U pitanju je protest veći od čuvenog „Maleconazo” protesta 1994. godine koji je usledio nakon „pada gvozdene zavese“ i raspada Sovjetskog Saveza, tzv. „period special“. Pasaule ir dažāda. Un dažādi ir arī mūsu raidījumi. Mēs tikko bijām Spānijā. Tagad dosimies uz to vietu, kuru Kolumbs atklāja otro pēc Bahamu salām. Tā, protams, ir Kuba un tās atklāšana 1492. gada 27. oktobrī. Spāņu kolonistu vēsturiskā klātbūtne valstī ir neatņemama daļa no Kubas identitātes un valstiskuma. Šajā mēnesī Kuba atkal nonāca pasaules ziņu virsrakstos, jo, ja tā var teikt, tās vēsturē ir sākusies jauna ēra. Kubā cilvēki dzīvoja labu laiku pirms Kristofors Kolumbs ieradās salā. Proti, cilvēki tur, no mūsdienām skaitot, ir bijuši vismaz 6000 gadu. Pēc Kolumba ierašanās Kuba līdzās citām Karību jūras salām bija Spānijas kolonija. Spāņu - Amerikāņu kara laikā Kuba bija tiešā ASV pārvaldībā, bet no 1902. līdz 1959. gadam tā bija neatkarīga, lai arī ASV regulāri vēroja un reizēm iejaucās Kubā notiekošajā. Šis periods tādēļ arī tiek dēvēts par Neokoloniālo Republiku. Izsūtījumā dzīvojošie kubieši gan šo posmu tā kapitālistiskās sistēmas un demokrātiskuma centienu dēļ dēvēja par Brīvo Kubu (Cuba Livre). Pēc Brīvās Kubas nāca Fidels – Fidels Kastro, kuru noteikti visi zina un atceras. Fidels Kastro valdīja komunistiskajā Kubā dažādos amatos – premjers, prezidents, kompartijas vadītājs –no 1959. gada līdz 2011. gadam. Tādējādi viņš faktiski bija pasaules vēsturē viens no visilgākajiem valsts vadītājiem, ja neskaita, protams, monarhus. Viņš noteikti ir pretrunīga politiskā figūra mūsdienu pasaules politiskajā vēsturē. Pasaule arvien strīdas, vai Kastro bija brīvības cīnītājs un vienlīdzīgas sabiedrības radītājs vai arī nežēlīgs diktators, kurš faktiski turēja savas valsts iedzīvotājus nabadzībā. Nabadzības rādītāji ir patiesi izaicinoši. Kuba, kā zināms, ir viena no pēdējām sociālistiskajām valstīm pasaulē. Lai arī pirms Kastro nākšanas pie varas tā bija viena no attīstītākajām valstīm Latīņamerikā. Kastro markisma-ļeņinisma garā ieturētā pārvalde un ASV uzliktais preču embargo ir pamatīgi ietekmējis valsts attīstību. Kuba ir centusies atrast partnerus visā pasaulē, sevišķi jau liels sabiedrotais savulaik bija PSRS. Kaut kāda ekonomikas liberalizācija faktiski sākās tikai pēc tam, kad Fidela Kastro vietā stājās viņa brālis Rauls Kastro. Kopš 2011. gada kompartijas lēmuma, valsts vara sāk atbrīvot savu sociālistisko ekonomisko sistēmu no stingras politiskās kontroles. Tagad kubiešiem ir atļauts pašiem celt un remontēt savas mājas. Ir atļauts arī veidot mazus privātos uzņēmumus. Ir atļauts iegādāties elektroniskās ierīces un mobilos telefonus, apmesties viesnīcās un pirkt un pārdot lietotas automašīnas. Starp citu, Kubai bija raksturīgs medicīnas personāla pakalpojumu eksports apmaiņā pret produktiem. Vēl pavisam nesen Kuba Venecuēlai piegādāja apmēram 30 000 medicīnas darbinieku apmaiņā pret regulārām naftas piegādēm. Runājot, par Kubas lielākajām eksporta precēm, gribētos teikt cukurs un cigāri. Bet patiesībā cukura cenas pasaulē pēdējās pāris desmitgadēs ir pamatīgi kritušās un arī ne visai efektīvās ražošanas dēļ Kubas cukurs ir zaudējis konkurences cīņā un valstij ir grūtības nodrošināt pat vietējo patēriņu. Līdzīgs stāsts ir par tabaku un cigāriem, jo Kuba nav pasaulē lielākais ražotājs šajā nozarē. Tagad tūrisma sektors ir kļuvis valstij ienesīgāks, bet Covid-19 dēļ tas ir faktiski paralizēts. Pārgrupēšanās Kubas ekonomikā, acīmredzot notiek. Lielākās eksporta preces Kubai ir petroleja, niķelis, medicīnas produkti un arī, protams, tabaka, kafija, zivis un cita lauksaimniecības produkcija. Interesanti, ka lielākie eksporta partneri ir jau pieminētā Venecuēla, kā arī agrākā kolonizatorvalsts Spānija, kā arī vēsturiskā partnera PSRS pārņēmēja Krievija. Bet nozīmīga importa daļa valstī ir pārtika, apmēram trīs ceturtdaļas pārtikas Kuba ieved no ārpuses.  Taču 2021. gada aprīlis ieies vēsturē ar pilnīgi jaunu ēru Kubas vēsturē. Rauls kastro no Kubas prezidenta amata atkāpās jau 2018. gadā, bet šomēnes viņš paziņoja arī par atkāpšanos no vēl ietekmīgākā komunistiskās partijas pirmā sekretāra amata. Un pirmo reizi 60 gadu laikā Kubu nevadīs kāds no Kastro klana, bet gan jaunais Kubas līderis Migels Diazs Kanels. Viņš ir 62 gadus vecs, bet pietiekami progresīvs, lai arī joprojām uzticīgs komunistiskajai partijai un sociālismam. Cik aktīvi viņam izdosies virzīt uz priekšu iecerētās reformas, rādīs laiks. Te gan, protams, ir jāņem vērā arī attiecības ar kaimiņvalsti ASV. Lai kā Kuba ir centusies norobežoties un ASV ir centusies ierobežot Kubu, izskatās, ka abu valsti liktenis ir neizbēgami saistīts. Kubas attiecības ar ASV pēdējos gados ir gājušas kā pa kalniem. Prezidents Obama centās tās diplomātiski un ekonomiski uzlabot, tur prezidents Tramps bija konservatīvāks. Piemēram, Latvijai un Igaunijai tie bija apmēram 15 gadi starpkaru periodā, Lietuvai un Polijai – vēl mazāk. Tāpēc var šķist pat pārsteidzoši, cik tieši šī kaut nelielā pieredze tomēr reproducējusies attiecīgo valstu šībrīža politiskajā attīstībā. Visas tās Austrumeiropas nācijas, kurās demokrātija ilgāku vai īsāku laiku pastāvēja pirms Otrā pasaules kara, arī šobrīd ir demokrātiskas. Arī Polijā un Ungārijā, kur pie varas esošie politiskie spēki pēdējos gados manipulējuši ar medijiem, tiesu varu, citām sabiedriskām institūcijām, demokrātijas pamatprincipi joprojām ir spēkā. Citādi tas ir ar vairumu valstu, kuras laikā pēc Krievijas impērijas sabrukuma piedzīvoja vien salīdzinoši īsus suverena valstiskuma periodus vai netika tālāk par valstiskuma izveides mēģinājumiem. Sarunā piedalās žurnālists Andis Sedlenieks un Latvijas Ārpolitikas institūta pētniece Sintija Broka. Telefonintervijā - Vidzemes augstskolas rektors, vēsturnieks Gatis Krūmiņš. Un incansable hombre de rap nacido en Medellín, de padre salsómano y madre dedicada a sus hijos, el MC de Aranjuez cuenta en esta conversación la historia de los Alcolirykoz, el grupo que lidera junto a Kastro y Fazeta, el grupo de rap más emocionante y disciplinado de los últimos 10 años en Colombia. En este podcast, Gambeta hace la narración extraordinaria de cómo llegó al rap, su despreocupación por mantener un trabajo "normal" porque lo suyo era el rap, la importancia de los ancestros tanto familiares como musicales y cómo se volvió un coleccionista de discos que fueron formando un lingo y un repertorio musical underground propio e independiente hasta el día de hoy.  Para mi es un orgullo conversar con este amigo de música sobre su vida y una emoción increíble verlo rendir tributo a las grandes estrellas del hip hop colombiano en un próximo disco cargado de colaboraciones.  Hijo indiscutible del nadaísmo, del jazz, coplero impecable, arqueólogo extraordinario de beats, este es Gambeta, un MC sin igual.  Espero que lo disfrute.

The complex palatial society of the island of Crete in the Bronze Age still dazzles us today, but what happened to this society after the palaces fell and before the rise of the Greek city-state (1200-700 BCE)? What was life like in this transitional period? In the eastern part of the island, people fled up into almost inaccessible mountain sites and maintained little contact with the rest of the Aegean, at least in the later part of the period. The lecture will bring together evidence from a variety of recent excavations at Halasmenos, Vasiliki, Knossos, Thronos/Sybrita, and Chania, but will focus on two major sites in eastern Crete: Karphi and Kavousi. The British excavations at Karphi in the 1930's brought to light a large town of this period, and recent study by the author and a new group of British and European scholars are making clearer the nature of that settlement. Excavations at Kavousi have produced three settlements and cemeteries that span the entire period: Vronda, Kastro, and Azoria. Examination of the material from these two sites tells us much about the social structure, political organization, religious beliefs, technology, and burial customs of the people and suggests that while there are differences among the communities, there is also a great deal of homogeneity.
