Would you ever keep a photo of a loved one taken after they died? Or wear a bracelet made from their hair? In this episode of Spirit Speakeasy, we're exploring some of the most haunting—and surprisingly heartfelt—mourning practices from the past. From Victorian post-mortem photography and death masks, to hair jewelry and family hair wreaths displayed in living rooms, these tangible tokens of grief may seem strange by today's standards… but they once carried deep spiritual, emotional, and cultural meaning.
General Browne, a soldier hardened by war and governed by reason, accepts an invitation to the castle of his old school-friend, Lord Woodville. The place has only lately been inherited and is undergoing tasteful restoration, its mediaeval past slowly yielding to Georgian elegance. But not all traces of the past have been swept away. One chamber remains veiled in its former splendour—its faded tapestry concealing more than just stone walls. It is this room that is given to the General to stay in overnight. The Tapestried Chamber was written by Sir Walter Scott and published in The Keepsake for 1829, during the final years of his life, when he was writing under intense pressure in an effort to repay heavy debts. On this episode, we dig into a chilling story that begins with a heartfelt visit to an old family farmhouse—and ends in a confrontation with something far more sinister. When Claire retrieves keepsakes from her late aunt's abandoned country home, she believes she's preserving a piece of the past. But what follows that quiet visit defies explanation: a terrified dog, a television that turns on by itself, and a blessed rosary that mysteriously breaks—without breaking. As the events escalate, Claire turns to her faith and the church for answers. Could grief itself have opened a door? And if so, what came through? Join us as we follow the breadcrumbs of a haunting that starts with sorrow and ends with a silent passenger who may have never left the house at all.

Welcome to the New England Society for Paranormal Research's museum, once owned by Ed and Lorraine Warren, where the world's most notorious haunted objects live behind glass… and binding prayers. From the infamous Annabelle doll (yes, she's still grinning) to relics so evil they'd ghost your ex without warning, each item has a story that will make you think twice before scoring that vintage lamp on eBay. Join us as Eric Vitale guides us through the creepiest corners of the Warren collection, revealing where each artifact came from, what it did (and might still be doing), and how many blessing—er, “band-aids for the soul”—it takes to keep them contained. Bring a flashlight, say a prayer, and maybe leave your precious tchotchkes at home—some things really shouldn't come with a home warranty. It started with a missing breast milk keepsake. But when Cheyna Lee joined an online group of frustrated customers, she uncovered something much bigger—hundreds of victims, stolen mementos, and a scam artist hiding in plain sight. This is the story of Destiny Magoon, a small business owner who promised sentimental jewelry made from ashes, hair, and even breast milk—but left heartbreak in her wake. What followed was an online investigation that played out like a true crime documentary, exposing fraud, deception, and a woman willing to do anything to cover her tracks. Robert Marks founded Fidelity Voice and Data in 1999 with just a $600 investment, which he grew into a business generating over $30 million in revenue, making it one of the largest telecommunications and cloud services competitors throughout the Midwest. The company focused on providing high-speed Internet access to various industries. After selling the company in 2015, Robert turned his attention to giving back to his local community through various philanthropic initiatives. In 2020, however, Robert's entrepreneurial spirit led him to solve a deeply personal problem during the pandemic—centered around the difficulty of sharing personal media with family. He raised $1.2 million and founded Projector as a keepsake company, building a personal streaming platform for legacy and memory preservation—the platform he wished had existed. The company now has thousands of subscribers, and Robert is in the process of raising a larger venture round to scale Projector. In our conversation, we unpack Robert's journey as an entrepreneur, his transition from B2B to B2C, the nuances and opportunities within the keepsake and legacy market, how AI serves as technological leverage to lower the barriers to building companies, the lessons he imparts as an educator, the importance of corporate culture, his love for Cleveland, and much more!-----LINKS:https://www.linkedin.com/in/-robertmarks/ https://projector.app/-----SPONSORS: Impact Architects & NinetyImpact Architects & NinetyLay of The Land is brought to you by Ninety.
