[Due to our last-minute addition of two episodes, the podcast feed mistakenly had S5E09a queued here for a few hours this morning - it should now be fixed!] How Would Lubitsch Do It comes to a close with a grand finale. Tim Brayton returns to discuss Cluny Brown and look back on both Ernst Lubitsch's career and the past five seasons of this show. First, we discuss everything Cluny Brown: the film's generosity and humanism, its commentary on British class society, its relationship with the second world war, its full-throated embrace of absurdism, the title character's magnetism, Adam Belinski's status as a revision on a stock villain, and the film's somewhat autobiographical and wonderfully optimistic ending. Second, we close out the show with a look back: we debate our respective rankings (Tim, Devan) of Lubitsch's filmography, highlight our favourite cast members, crew members and collaborators, discuss subsequent filmmakers who bear distinct marks of Lubitsch's influence, discuss whether or not the show's structure accurately reflects the ebbs and flows and our subject's career, and answer the key questions: why Lubitsch? Why a podcast? Edited by Griffin Sheel. A Thanks I started this quixotic project two years ago with the hope of making something that spoke to me and, if anyone else was interested, so be it. Turns out some other people were interested, and if you're reading this now, that's probably you. My endless and sincere thanks for sticking it through.

Against the backdrop of the incredibly boring 2000 election, the late, great Philip Seymour Hoffman went on a cross-country journey to see if George W. Bush or Al Gore represented America. The result was THE PARTY'S OVER (2001), aka THE LAST PARTY 2000 - that's right, it's an official sequel to the Robert Downey Jr-hosted documentary. We found many resonances between this fossil from the turn of the millennium and our current moment. PLUS: The Democratic Party primary, the fascist Italian Prime Minister in Canada, and a fond farewell to David Bordwell. At some point in life, all of us are going to experience something that impacts the way we show up at work. Talking about it might feel scary, but you may never know the ripple of change you could cause by sharing. As a financial advisor and Enneagram 8, Kristin isn't usually the type to overshare at work. She's great at her job and has been (and continues to be) successful in her career. When she found herself having to cancel meetings and move calls for doctor appointments, she realized it was time to share about what her family was going through. By opening the door for the conversation about infertility, she realized not only was her team and clients receptive and kind so many of them shared that they wished they could have been more open when they were going through similar situations. Brave Kristin has been sharing and leading by her values by continuing to have this conversation, using her Enneagram 8 confidence and opening doors for others that may never have opened them alone. Here's what we talked about: 03:51 Why Kristin is in finance 07:48 The cost of not leading by value 11:09 Infertility and work 18:10 How to share something vulnerable at work with clients

More than 35 years ago, HERE Technologies created the first digital map. Today, they are the world's leading location platform company with a global footprint across 52 countries. . The HERE HD Live Map recently launched on the BMW 7 Series in the US and Canada helps the vehicle reach SAE Level 2+ (ADAS) at 80 mph. This means the car can be driven hands-free on interstates and highways. The only condition is that drivers must stay focused and be ready to take control if necessary. . Last summer, Intelligent Speed Assistance (ISA) became mandatory in new vehicles in the EU thus requiring the legal speed limit to be visible to drivers at all times. In response, the HERE ISA Map provides accurate speed limit information by informing drivers of the speed limits on the roads they are driving, warning them if they are exceeding the speed limit, and can even be programmed to prevent them from going over the speed limit. . We sat down with Philip Hubertus, Director of Product Management, Driver Assistance & Automated Driving Maps, and Kristin Thompson, Project Manager, to discuss HERE Technologies' HD Live Map and ISA technology, its adoption around the globe, and the future of autonomous driving. . Kelley Conway talks to Chuko & Arie Esirie about THIS IS MY DESIRE. This stunning diptych brings us two street-level stories from contemporary Lagos, both featuring lead characters who hope to eventually emigrate to Europe. In practical terms, this means each must scrape by with multiple jobs and side hustles as they save up money and attempt to navigate Nigeria’s Kafkaesque bureaucracy in pursuit of their goal. But the goalposts keep moving, and both Mofe, a middle-aged electronics repairman, and Rosa, a twentysomething hairdresser and bartender, face obstacles that test just how far they’re willing to go to improve their lives. These situations may be difficult, but first-time twin directors Arie and Chuko Esiri imbue their portrayals with a generosity of spirit and dignified compassion. Rather than directly intersecting, the parallel halves of This Is My Desire rhyme and resonate off each other, creating a deeper overall experience. Adding to the film’s beauty is the vibrant 35mm photography, which shows off the colors and patterns of Lagosian life. "Gorgeous. A formally and stylistically impressive film that gives fascinating insights into the society of the sprawling conurbation of Lagos. This Is My Desire is a powerful film and well worth seeking out” (Kristin Thompson). (MK)

Kristin Thompson is a speaker, business coach, and Founder of speakSERVEgrow.com, and she's the creator of several popular programs like Rock Your Talk and the Rise Live Event. Kristin the go-to girl when you want to learn how to gain more clients, cash, and visibility for your business. Kristin spent an award winning decade in media sales working for companies like CBS and NBC, but in 2007 she was ready to start a family. This decision forced her out of a full-time sales position, and into her own business where she could serve her family and serve her purpose, while profiting in a big way. With a baby at home, working just 3 days a week, Kristin started rockin rooms, filling workshops, and selling out programs. She broke through from $3000 a month part time, to $30,000 a month, week, and even hour using the SpeakServeGrow strategy. Soon people were asking Kristin to share her secrets and strategies, and her private coaching programs quickly started selling out. Kristin helps her clients gain more visibility, more cash, more clients, and live the life of their dreams. Specialties: Professional speaker and Business Coach. Speaking to grow your business.   Many entrepreneurs start their businesses because they’re driven by a passion for whatever industry they’re in. However, there are a multitude of other facets in business that need to be managed meticulously, and they’re far less exciting. Kristin Thompson realized this quickly when her passion of dancing turned into a nationally recognized business, and she found herself struggling to balance it all. Paying rent, organizing a larger group of clients, bookkeeping—it quickly caught up with her and put her in a difficult situation that threatened her business and landed her in court over financial disputes with her landlord.   Today, Kristin is a nationally recognized choreographer, and her dance studio, K. Monique’s Studio of Dance, wins awards all over the country. Join us as we talk to Kristin and discover how she used confidence throughout her years as a young business owner with very little know-how to continue to propel her business forward. She will share how she made it out of difficult situations that could have ended her business, and what those experiences taught her along the way.

Kristin was born in New Jersey, both her parents are New Yorkers. She then moved to Southern California at the age of seven. As a child growing up Kristin watched her father build a life for himself and his family from nothing. This started from the very foundation and took itself all the way up to the multimillion-dollar living in the exclusive gated community of Hidden Hills before he lost it all. This gave Kristin the drive and the necessity to want to create financial independence of her own. The arrival of her son added more fuel to the fire and Kristin grew her home-based business from small and sputtering to a multiple six-figure sensation working in the office 3 days a week and has done it all while working from home, with a laptop and an amazing talk she used to generate a rush of visibility, leads, cash and clients.

You can find him on the world wide web at davidbordwell.net, where many of his books are available for purchase as downloadable pdfs, along with a wealth of supplemental materials, as well as his invaluable blog and where he and Kristin Thompson write about all manner of cinema. Due to the current pandemic, many businesses are considering a switch to an online platform. Whatever you're experiencing right now, you are not alone. If you've just started building your business or have been building your business using speaking arrangements, this conversation is going to be powerful for you. It's going to cover essential topics like how you can make money online, how you can communicate with your family. How to communicate with your prospects without being insensitive. How to really be able to sell in the marketplace. In this week's episode, Shameca Tankerson welcomes Kristin Thompson as her special guest to talk about how you can take your event and profit online. Kristin Thompson quickly rose up in the industry making waves as her simple one-hour talks (to just 100 people) generated 5 and 6 figure paydays. This firecracker mompreneur used leverage to build her business part-time.  She went from zero to multiple six-figure years. Even six-figure months. Part One of ‘How to Take Your Event and Profit Online with Guest Kristin Thompson' It's important to take time to eat, breathe, and re-center yourself in the middle of the day. Have an end time, a time when you wrap up. Then you can then go connect with your spouse, your partner, your kids or yourself. Divide your time into blocks. Put your family time and profit-producing activities into your calendar first. Make sure that you're putting your energy into the places that are going to grow your business the fastest. Find time to connect with people to find, book, and deliver opportunities. These are things like speaking classes, making offers, talking to prospective clients, or podcast interviews. All of that stuff needs to be laid into the calendar so you can set your priority. If you're reading this right now, it's also a form of connection. Because this content serves you. “Build your business online, make it engaging and entertaining!” — Shameca Tankerson (00:58-01:09) If you want to improve your existing business or have the desire to start your own business, but your fear of speaking is getting in the way, take a look at your gifts as a good starting point. Start in your lane of expertise so you can build your unique brand personnel. You don't want to sound exactly the same as similar speakers out there. There must be something about your personality, style, and vibe that sets you apart from them. Your differentiator is your content, your style, what you include, what you exclude, pricing, all of that can help you stand out. Consider collaborating with different people. Look for opportunities to be interviewed on other people's pages, podcasts or groups. You can share your gifts on all of those platforms. Grow your Facebook group. Lead your master class there. Some people are very soft and spiritual. Some are a little nerdy and like intellectualizing things. The more you can lean into your natural personality, the more you're going to pop out of the sea of sameness. Don't be afraid if you're a little different. Own that and claim that as a way to differentiate yourself visually in the marketplace. So you continue to serve, educate and empower others.  Part Two of ‘How to Take Your Event and Profit Online with Guest Kristin Thompson' The key thing is to figure out what is your signature system. Use your expertise so you can help others get all the way up over the mountain to the other side. With the right strategies, you can craft your talk in a way that's interactive and entertaining. Moreover, avoid switching topics because that's not a very good analogy. “You can stand out by figuring out what is your archetype, and where you need to pull that forward in your business.” —  Kristin Thompson (23:32-23:37) It's always important, no matter what's going on, to be sensitive to the broader market. Anything you deliver should be with the spirit of service. You should only sell to people who really need what you have to offer. That should be the default values that you do business with. Don't stop. There are many people in need right now. Businesses stay invested in things that make sense. Make offers to people who need you most. Because they do need you. Especially those of you who can help people build businesses to work from home. There are many topics that are important right now. Just do it with the spirit of service. Hopefully, this fog will get clear soon. It's going to lift at some point in time. We're not going to be in this state forever. I believe staying grounded and going forward like a locomotive. Keep your long game in mind. The end results. That is how you are going to survive. About Kristin Thompson Kristin helps you take your personality and your expertise, and package it into a message and a business you love…. so you can serve more people and make lots of money doing it! Its about rockin your image, your talk, and your life… into six figures and beyond! http://www.speakservegrow.com/free About Shameca Shameca Tankerson is an award-winning business coach, national speaker, and bestselling author. This week on The Spectator Film Podcast… Dial M for Murder (1954) 5.17.19 Featuring: Austin, Maxx Commentary begins at 13:17 — Notes — Everything You Always Wanted to Know About Lacan (But Were Afraid to Ask Hitchcock) edited by Slavoj Žižek — Here’s some of the better Lacanian criticism of Hitchcock, of which you can find a lot. I’d recommend this as a decent entry point for this type of scholarship – at least, as decent as you might find with Lacanian psychoanalysis. We relied upon some of the essays in this volume to better characterize the variety of Hitchcockian objects at play in Dial M for Murder and “Hitchcockian suspense.” The two most helpful essays for our conversation today were ‘Hitchcockian Suspense’ by Pascal Bonitzer and ‘Hitchcock’s Objects’ by Mladen Dolar – although we’ll borrow Žižek’s description of the “exchange objects” from the introduction here in the passages below: On Hitchcockian Suspense “Hitchcock’s films therefore work only if a natural order is presupposed. Everything is proceeding normally, according to routines that are ordinary, even humdrum and unthinking, until someone notices that an element in the whole, because of its inexplicable behavior, is a stain. The entire sequence of events unfolds from that point. The most characteristically Hitchcockian staging effects are always organized around such a stain. However, anything whatsoever may function as the stain inducing the gaze – the blood on the dress in Stage Fright; the glass of milk in Suspicion, ‘intensified’ by placing a small bulb inside of it; the black rectangle of the window in Rear Window and, within, that black rectangle, the red tip of the murderer’s cigarette, or, indeed, the plane in North by Northwest, which is at first no more than a speck in the sky” (20; Bonitzer). “Hitchcock’s films are full of decent, ordinary petty-bourgeois people. These are masks. Thus, in The Lady Vanishes, the good Miss Froy, with her tea and meaningless chatter, is really a spy. All the others have something else to hide, a concealed point of abjection, which the perverse element, the visible but barely perceptible stain of crime, will reveal” (21; Bonitzer). On Hitchcockian Objects “But in a series of Hitchcock’s films, we find another type of object which is decidedly not indifferent, not pure absence: what matters here is precisely its presence, the material presence of a fragment of reality – it is a leftover, remnants which cannot be reduced to a network of formal relations proper to the symbolic structure. We can define this object as an object of exchange circulating among subjects, serving as a kind of guarantee, pawn, on their symbolic relationship. It is the role of the key in Notorious and Dial M for Murder, the role of the wedding ring in Shadow of a Doubt and Rear Window, the role of the lighter in Strangers on a Train, and even the role of the child circulating between the two couples, in The Man Who Knew Too Much. It is unique, non-specular – that is, it has no double, it escapes the dual mirror-relation, which is why it plays a crucial role in those very films that are built on a whole series of dual relations, each element having its mirror-counterpart… it is the one which has no counterpart, and that is why it must circulate between the opposite elements, as if in search of its proper place, lost from the very beginning” (6; Žižek) ‘Dial M for Murder: Hitchcock frets not at his narrow room’ by David Bordwell from Observations on Film Art — Observations on Film Art, run by Kristin Thompson and David Bordwell, is without question one of the best, if not the best, film blog on the internet. It’s been active for years and has an incredible archive of articles and essays discussing all sorts of movies. This post on Dial M for Murder from Bordwell is characteristically insightful. Martin Scorsese on Dial M for Murder — The Academy recorded a brief video introduction from Martin Scorsese on Dial M for Murder and it’s pretty cool! Hitchcock by François Truffaut — Essential reading, despite the fact that all of two pages are dedicated to discussing Dial M for Murder. Hitchcock’s Films Revisited by Robin Wood — Robin Wood barely discusses Dial M for Murder in this book, but it remains one of the best books written about Hitchcock’s movies. Check out our Strangers on a Train episode for more resources on Alfred Hitchcock

Kristin Thompson's popularity has skyrocketed as she's gained recognition in recent years as a top speaker and coach helping purpose-driven entrepreneurs, coaches and consultants grow their business by speaking their mission and serving their purpose in a way that naturally transitions more prospects into paying clients.  Using speaking as her top marketing strategy Kristin has built a multiple six-figure business working 3 days a week, and she wants to show you how to do the same. (This was originally recorded for a another podcast of mine, AND Kristin is great for this show as well...until I can get her re-booked, please enjoy this chat from Summer 2014) Kristin Thompson Vroom Veer Stories Made a conscious choice with her husband to veer away from the corporate job to raise a family Found an amazing opportunity earning great money as a speaker...with no speaking experience (gulp) Learned she really loved speaking and made it the foundation of her business Burnt out her adrenals and learned she had to invest in self care When you are over tired you don't notice until AFTER you get some good sleep Told her assistant NOT to book her lunch break, even if she tells her too Great story about making more money and not feeling "the rush" of victory Kristin Thompson Link Kristin's Web Site

If you've taken a film studies course in the last couple decades, you likely came across Film Art on the required book purchases. Chances are you first learned how to investigate the structure of a film (narrative, editing, mise-en-scene, sound, etc) before learning how to recognize ideology, or apply psychoanalytic theories. Wherever one's interest lie in looking at cinema, the work by film scholar Kristin Thompson over the last four decades has provided intensive groundwork into looking at Hollywood cinema's most intuitive principles and beyond. Kristin sits down to traces her entrance into academic film studies and developing a method for understanding form as adapted from Russian theories, the history of classical structure as developed by Hollywood and its legacy both abroad in the silent era and continuing into even today's so-called "VFX-driven" movies, and her work on The Lord of the Rings franchise and its game-changing success in the new century. Finally, the two sit down to look at John Ford's How Green Was My Valley, which employs unique methods of narrative strategy and compositional staging to create a poetic "three-hankie picture" (and well deserving of its 1941 Oscar). 0:00-3:03 Opening4:21-11:36 Establishing Shots - Manhunter12:21-58:18 Deep Focus - Kristin Thompson59:27-1:02:07 Mubi Sponsorship1:03:49-1:22:27 Double Exposure - How Green Was My Valley (John Ford)1:22:31-1:24:09 Close

Top 11 Takeaways From Podcast Movement 2014   Podcast Movement 2014 was held in Dallas, Texas August 16th & 17th. For an inaugural event, PM14 was well run and full of great information. The guys did an amazing job putting it together.   Earlier this year, Dan Franks reached out to me and asked if I would present a session at PM14. I was truly honored. My session on the power of storytelling went over very well. Many people came to the stage after my session to tell me how useful they found the information. I really appreciated the feedback.   I am already looking forward to Podcast Movement 2015 in Fort Worth, Texas.   My notebook filled with great notes from PM14. On this episode, I want to share with you my 11 top takeaways from the event. I hope these spark a little something in your to move your podcast forward and transform your content.   1. Have a plan to make money. This came from Chris Brogan's Keynote “Podcasting As A Business Driver”. If you want to support your habit/hobby, have a plan to generate income. This could be from your product, service or other income stream. Figure out how to cover your cost at a minimum.   2. Copy = Pale Imitation = Ignored. Srinivas Rao offered this insight in his Keynote “Genuine Curiosity – The Fuel Behind The Fire”. Chris Brogan said, “No one ever won a race looking sideways.” Be brave and have the courage to be unique. Tell some great stories.   3. What is your brand personality? Who are you really and who do your clients need you to be? Kristin Thompson asked these questions during her session “Rock Your Talk & Profit Big … Beyond The Podcast”. Define your brand personality. Then, thread it through everything you do.   4. Don't use white in your logo. This was mentioned during “Top Podcasters Share Three Success Secrets For Podcasting”. It was a panel discussion with Michael Stelzner, Cliff Ravenscraft, and Chris Brogan. If you want it to stand out in iTunes store, get rid of the white. Make your logo pop.   5. Involve others. During his session “10 Ways to Take Your Podcast From Average To Amazing”, Daniel J. Lewis suggested you use interviews, conversations, and shared presentations to get others involved with your show. Empower your audience to share your content. Delegate others to help you achieve tasks.   6. #1 goal of podcast marketing is opt-in. Tim Paige mentioned this in his session “The Top 7 Ways To Grow Your Podcast And Turn Listeners Into Leads”. We've heard it many times that the money is in the list. Use your podcast to grow your list every opportunity that you get.   7. Think of your avatar in the car or excercising. What can you provide to make the experience better? This was a great piece of advice from Jaime Tardy during her Keynote “The Future Of Podcasting”. If you want to connect and engage with your audience, put yourself in their shoes.   8. Learn what the knobs do. To learn your equipment and what it does, press record and narrate your actions as you turn knobs. Hear how it sounds. This was a tip offered by Dave Jackson in his session “The Art Of Editing Audio – Finding The Diamond In The Rough”. What better way to figure out what all of those knobs do other than tinkering with it.   9. Ask your tribe questions about what they struggle with. Jessica Kupferman's session was titled “Your Commmunity Of Kindred Spirits: Why, How and When To Build One”. She offered this tidbit while helping us discover the power and connection of a community.   10. Give your guests resources to promote your show after they are on. This came during a panel discussion called “Promote Your Podcast The Right (And Unique) Way”. If you want your guests to promote your show after they appear, make it easy for them. Give them graphics, quotes or audio clips they can use to help spread the word.   11. Comfort and awesome usually do not overlap. I loved this line. It was another from Chris Brogan during his Keynote “Podcasting As A Business Driver”. Be brave. Try something new. Be unique. Have the courage to step out and tell personal stories that cannot be copied. That's when you'll get noticed. Don't be comforable. Be awesome.     I'd love to help you with your podcast. E-mail any questions or comments you might have to Coach@PodcastTalentCoach.com.   You can also find other tools including worksheets, a workbook and videos to help you create great content at www.PodcastTalentCoach.com.     Let's turn your information into engaging entertainment.
