"I'm wide awake. Yeah, I was in the dark. I was falling hard, in a crashing car."Awake is a police procedural — slash family drama slash psychic fantasy slash psychological thriller — that ran from March 1 to May 24, 2012. Kyle Killen created the show, which starred Jason Isaacs as homicide investigator Michael Britten. After Detective Britten's family gets into a car wreck, his reality diverges into two spheres. In one, his wife Hannah — Laura Allen — survived while his son Rex — Dylan Minnette — died. Then when he falls asleep, the opposite is true: Rex lives and Hannah is dead. The result is stress, sleep-deprivation, and a few spectacularly psychedelic sequences.Listen to Áine and Kevin drift off on topics like sharp writing, police procedurals, and penguins.Follow us on the usual social media suspects:FacebookTwitterInstagramAnd send your Ricky's Tacos orders to mysterytomepodcast@gmail.com.Mystery to Me is a production of Mystery Sheet LLC.See Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info.

Hallo HALO!
We've got another video game adaptation to hit, this time centering around the long awaited adaptation of the very popular series, "Halo." An American military science fiction television series developed by Kyle Killen and Steven Kane for the streaming service Paramount+, based on the video game franchise of the same name. It is produced by Amblin Television, 343 Industries, Showtime Networks, One Big Picture, and Chapter Eleven, and follows a 26th-century war between the United Nations Space Command and the Covenant, a theocratic-military alliance of several advanced alien races. Pablo Schreiber and Jen Taylor star as Master Chief Petty Officer John-117 and Cortana, with the latter reprising her role from the video game series, and are joined by Natascha McElhone, Yerin Ha, Bokeem Woodbine, Shabana Azmi, Olive Gray, Charlie Murphy, Kate Kennedy, Bentley Kalu, Natasha Culzac, and Danny Sapani. Development for a Halo television series began in 2013.[2] Killen was hired in June 2018, and the series officially announced a 9-episode order for Paramount+. Filming began in Ontario, Canada in October 2019, although post-production for the first five episodes was affected due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Filming eventually resumed in Budapest, Hungary in February 2021. Dom & Chris break down the troubled history of the production, what the adaptation does right versus wrong, whether video game adaptations will truly ever be great, and whether this show has legs going forward. In episode #5 we sit down with Kyle Killen. Kyle is our first lax guy on the podcast and another Peterborough, ON native. Kyle brings experience at both the Juco level at Onondaga Community College, where he captured a National Championship and also experience playing at the NCAA level for The Rochester Institute of Technology. Kyle was drafted in the 2018 NLL draft and has played in parts of 2 seasons for the Colorado Mammoth, and is now under contract by the Vancouver Warriors. We thank him for coming on and sharing his experience!
Four years ago, Kyle Killen faced an ultimatum from his pregnant wife: sell something, or call it quits on this “hobby.” Fast forward to the present: Kyle has sold two features that have gone into production and sold two pilots that have gone to series. One of those pilots is NBC’s Awake, which has wowed critics and audiences alike.Kyle Killen was raised in a small Texas town but grew up loving movies. He moved to Los Angeles to attend USC film school, but after a series of odd jobs and internships didn’t pan out, he packed his bags and moved back to Texas.Despite following one of his USC professors’ seemingly counterproductive advice to “quit writing if he could,” Kyle found he couldn’t shake the writing bug. Whenever he tried a new job, he ended up writing about it, and so decided to give Hollywood one more shot. The only complication: Kyle’s wife was pregnant with twins, and gave him an ultimatum, to sell a script within the next nine months, or change careers to something more stable. Around nine months later, Kyla sold the critically acclaimed feature The Beaver, which ended up going into production with Jodie Foster as director, and starring Foster and Mel Gibson!Kyle was on the map, and followed it up by selling the pilot Lone Star to Fox, who took it to series, but pulled the plug when the ratings didn’t pan out. They believed in his storytelling, however, and asked him to sign a 2-year overall deal and come up with a new series. That series was Awake, which just launched Thursday nights on NBC. Critics are calling it the best pilot of this season! If you haven’t had a chance, watch the pilot online, and tune in on Thursday night for the exciting second episode.Kyle also sold another feature, Scenic Route, which is currently in production.Follow Kyle on Twitter: @killen8Buy Gray’s book for only $4.99! Kyle Killen created the Fox drama, Lone Star, which was recently canceled after just two airings. While that television dream didn't exactly work out as planned, his film career is hanging in limbo. He wrote the much lauded screenplay for the movie The Beaver, which was due out this year. Killen talks about how this screenplay turned his life around and how the casting of Gibson may have affected the possibility of it's release.
