Hello to you listening in Olympia, Washington! Coming to you from Whidbey Island, Washington this is Stories From Women Who Walk with 60 Seconds (and a bit more) for Wednesdays on Whidbey and your host, Diane Wyzga. I am a storyteller of the old school. What do I mean? For over 30 years I've taught (and continue to teach) my clients and students the same thing: “Put down the paper and nobody gets hurt!” Why? Because storytellers have something to say that comes from their aliveness, which is what people most want to feel and connect with. Sharing our stories out loud brings them to light and life, and encourages us to do what most folks fear more than snakes: stand up and speak up in public. Story spoken aloud is what we leave of ourselves in another person. A story is an intimate lasting legacy, a permanent inheritance much like a vow or an oath. When we share our stories out loud, we connect with each other, we belong to each other. We might not realize it but we are creating a verbal promise, a vow, an oath of belonging. Think about how many times we've heard someone say, "Repeat after me: I solemnly swear..." Marrying couples pledge faithfulness through the challenges and joys of marriage. Lawyers uphold the law, maintain client confidentiality, and act as an officer of the court. Doctors focus on ethics, patient care and societal responsibilities. Politicians preserve and defend the Constitution. US military support and defend the Constitution against all enemies. Immigrants becoming US citizens swear the Oath of Allegiance to the United States during a formal naturalization ceremony. From the time we are children in school we recite The Pledge of Allegiance, a patriotic promise of loyalty to the United States flag and the republic for which it stands. What happens when we share our stories out loud? They become real. We say what we mean, we mean what we say. We—and those hearing us—know what we stand for and what we won't stand for. Yes, you might write a story but it needs to be shared out loud to enrich and include the wider world. That's the legacy of the stories we leave in those who have heard them spoken aloud. Colorado is mourning the loss of a radio legend; we remember the life and legacy of James "Dr. Daddio" Walker whose radio station KDKO was long known as "The Soul of the Rockies." Then, how do you recruit more teachers of color? Students at Northglenn High School recently tried to address that concern. Also, black holes, microplastics and new beginnings sound like things that may not go together. But for a Colorado Springs artist they have quite a lot in common.

Building a business is an incredible feat, but successfully exiting that business and turning it into a true family legacy is a completely different challenge. Melette sits down with Cameron Bishop, Managing Director and Partner at Rain Catcher, to discuss how to navigate the technical and emotional rollercoaster of selling a business. Why do some home service owners stay stuck while others build companies that run with predictability? Many think the problem is marketing or labor, but the real issue is a lack of clarity. When the owner is unclear, the team becomes unclear. That creates mixed messages, slow decisions, and systems that break under pressure. In this episode of The Better Than Rich Show, Mike Abramowitz sits down with Christine Marie, a 4th-Gen trades professional and consultant to leaders in the home service space. Christine explains how Legacy, identity, and apparent self-awareness influence the way an owner leads. She shows how personal clarity impacts the brand message, decision-making, systems, customer experience, and team alignment. Christine guides business owners through vision work, emotional drivers, customer journey audits, and essential systems to help their businesses grow without personal burden. She shows how emotional intelligence, clear values, and strong relationships create predictable companies that scale confidently. "How did you go bankrupt?" one character asks another in Ernest Hemingway's The Son Also Rises. "Two ways," the other character responds. "Gradually and then suddenly." But as Mark Batterson points out in his new book, "That's also how you get out of debt. That's how you start a business, write a book, or run a marathon — and a thousand other things." "Regardless of craft or career, dreams don't become reality overnight," he writes. "Reverse engineer any success story, and I daresay it happened two ways — gradually then suddenly." In this episode of the Influence Podcast, I talk to Mark Batterson about how to succeed in ministry, based on insights from his new book. I'm George P. Wood, executive editor of Influence magazine and your host. Mark Batterson is lead pastor at National Community Church in Washington, DC, and an ordained Assemblies of God minister. The 1970s were a turbulent time—streets alive with protest, classrooms charged with new ideas, and an entire generation questioning the stories they'd inherited. It was a decade of upheaval, but also one where curious opportunities arose. For some, those opportunities led not to politics or protest, but to the quiet pulse of a medicine few in America had ever heard of.In this conversation with Gene Bruno, we wander through those early days of acupuncture in the United States. From campus strikes and existentialist lectures with Angela Davis to finding himself in the second class of Dr. Kim's students, Gene's story carries the spirit of curiosity and rebellion that shaped an era. His path was less about a plan and more about following questions—whether that meant bringing acupuncture into UCLA's pain clinic, or rediscovering forgotten traditions with horses on California racetracks.Listen into this discussion as we explore acupuncture's improbable foothold in the counterculture of the 70s, the razor's edge moment when the profession nearly became the sole territory of physicians, and how veterinary acupuncture was reborn in America before returning to the world stage.

In this powerful episode of the HVAC School podcast, Bryan sits down with Nate Agentis, third-generation plumber and author of Get Shit Done: How to Build a Strong Team, A Profitable Business, and a Lasting Legacy. Their conversation explores the intersection of personal health, business success, and meaningful leadership in the trades industry. Nate's journey from technician to business owner wasn't easy. After his grandfather built the family plumbing business from nothing, only to lose it to the IRS, and his father rebuilt it from scratch, Nate found himself thrust into leadership at age 33 when his mother was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer. The tragedy of losing his mother while simultaneously taking over the business created a perfect storm that eventually led to burnout and a period of deep reflection during COVID-19. This experience became the foundation for his leadership philosophy and his book. The conversation delves into the generational divide in the trades, where older workers view younger employees as lazy while younger workers see their elders as slaves to their jobs. Nate argues that healthy leadership requires bridging this gap through understanding and practical solutions. His approach centers on five pillars: healthy owner, sticky culture, skilled technicians, efficient operations, and clear metrics. However, he emphasizes that without the foundation of personal health and self-awareness, the other pillars crumble. Perhaps most compelling is Nate's emphasis on humility and accountability as twin keys to success. He challenges the "self-made man" mentality prevalent in trades culture, arguing that true leadership requires vulnerability, community, and the willingness to seek help. This philosophy extends beyond business into his nonprofit work with Hope for the Trades, which provides educational resources, retreat opportunities, and humanitarian mission trips for tradespeople seeking both professional development and personal renewal. Key Topics Covered Generational Business Transitions - Navigating the challenges of taking over a family business during crisis and the unique pressures of third-generation ownership The Burnout Epidemic in Trades - Understanding why skilled tradespeople burn out and how to create sustainable career paths that don't sacrifice family and personal health Bridging Generational Divides - Addressing the tension between older workers who prioritize work ethic and younger workers who emphasize work-life balance The Five Pillars Framework - Healthy owner, sticky culture, skilled technicians, efficient operations, and clear metrics as the foundation for sustainable business growth Humility and Accountability in Leadership - Why admitting weakness and seeking help are actually signs of strength and keys to long-term success The Balance Wheel Concept - A practical tool for evaluating different areas of life (marriage, parenting, health, spirituality, etc.) and identifying areas needing attention Community and Isolation in Trades - Addressing the epidemic of loneliness among tradespeople and the importance of genuine relationships for personal and professional growth Metrics Without Depression - How to implement business measurement systems as tools for clarity rather than sources of shame or discouragement Hope for the Trades Nonprofit - Educational resources, retreat programs, and humanitarian missions designed to support the whole person, not just the business owner Legacy vs. Profit Mentality - Shifting focus from purely financial success to creating lasting positive impact on employees, families, and communities Practical Life Planning - Applying strategic planning principles to personal life, marriage, and parenting with the same intentionality used in business planning Sign up for Hope for the Trades at https://hopeforthetrades.com/ and get a free copy of Nate's book.
