Are you intrigued by this week's title? That title is called a hook. A hook is something that gets your attention because it opens a loop in your brain, and gets you to keep reading/watching/listening until that loop is closed. Why do certain reels on Instagram get you to pause and watch them through? Because there is text or video or something that hooks you in by opening that loop in your brain. This little-known psychological phenomenon is called the Zeigarnik effect, coined by Dr. Bluma Zeigarnik. This is why every episode of a good show ends in a cliffhanger. (It's why I'm really angry with the author of the Fourth Wing series… leaving every book with a cliffhanger.) It's also the same reason why many high-performing women find themselves overwhelmed quickly when making changes in their health and fitness. These women are giving their all in every area, but just like your computer only has so much RAM and you can only have so many tabs open before it slows down, you can only do so many things before your executive function (the “management system” of your brain) gets taxed. Add in stress, poor sleep, anxiety (all common symptoms of hormone imbalances) and your executive function is even more limited. The Zeigarnik effect states ''Our minds quickly forget finished tasks. However, they are programmed to continually interrupt us with reminders of unfinished tasks.” In other words, the Zeigarnik effect causes you to have lingering thoughts about the to-do's you haven't done, the deliverables you have yet to finish because your brain is looking for closure. We can hack this effect (the same way I've hacked netflix by pausing episodes in the lull instead of finishing the episode) by reducing cognitive overload. So how do we do that when we have a million priorities? In this episode, I'm going to share with you 4 key ways and strategies to mitigate the Zeigarnik effect that is causing you a lot of overwhelm and stress when it comes to your health and fitness goals. Nancy Harhut is the Co-founder and Chief Creative Officer at HBT Marketing, a consultancy that applies human behavior to marketing. As an internationally recognized creative director, she blends best-of-breed creative with decision science. Nancy is an international keynote speaker and has been named a Top 40 Digital Strategist by Online Marketing Institute, a Top 100 Creative Influencer by Ad Club, and a Top 50 Email Marketing Leader by Social. She is also the best-selling author of Using Behavioral Science in Marketing. In this episode… Some marketers today are so immersed in numbers and metrics that they often neglect the customer. Others may focus excessively on visual ads, distracting customers from the overall message. Yet 95% of purchasing decisions are made in the subconscious mind. How can you tap into these behavioral insights to influence purchasing decisions? Behavioral science researcher and innovative marketer Nancy Harhut says the key to driving purchasing decisions is persuasive messaging. Creative marketers can leverage unconscious behavior drivers like the endowment and Zeigarnik effect, social proof, the uncertainty reward, and autonomy and reciprocity bias. For instance, the endowment effect involves generating urgency and scarcity through limited-time offers, whereas the Zeigarnik effect can be used to spark customers' memories about abandoned carts. You can also offer customers purchasing and discount choices to harness autonomy bias while generating a desired result. When utilizing social proof, Nancy recommends featuring testimonials that begin with skepticism to increase credibility and reach uncertain customers. Tune in to today's episode of the Up Arrow Podcast as William Harris chats with Nancy Harhut, the Co-founder and Chief Creative Officer at HBT Marketing, about behavioral science tactics for e-commerce marketing. Nancy shares customer decision-making shortcuts, the true drivers of purchasing decisions, and why you should optimize for lifetime value rather than one-time purchases.

In a world saturated with content, what makes a good movie trailer stand out? The answer lies in a potent blend of psychology, novelty, and familiarity. Trailers like Steven Spielberg's "Jaws" and George Lucas's "Star Wars" have set the gold standard, employing a mix of well-known tropes and groundbreaking elements to captivate audiences. Marvel Studios has taken this to the next level, mastering the "novel yet familiar" approach and leveraging psychological principles like the Zeigarnik effect to leave audiences wanting more. And if trailers and teasers have proven to be a game-changer for dozens and dozens of movies, beyond the silver screen, the principles that make them compelling can be applied to our everyday storytelling, whether it's a business presentation, a social media post, or a pitch to a local journalist to "news hack" a Global Trend. By understanding the psychology and strategies behind successful movie trailers, we can craft narratives that not only capture attention but also sustain it, making our stories as unforgettable as the films they promote. And coincidence or not, if you've ever followed my advice and read the Worth of Water book by Gary White and Matt Damon - who should know one thing or two about movie trailers - the opening chapter exactly follows the 6-step framework that Phill Agnew lays out. Step 1 - Identify the Core Message That's the narrative we discussed with Carl minutes ago; in the example of the Water.org founders' book, that's the win-win-win perspective of achieving Water for all. Step 2 - Blend Novelty and Familiarity In theory, that's Star Wars combining the Hero's Journey with Space Opera. In the case of our book, that's a water charity, but combined with a bank and Nobel-prize-winning microcredit strategy. Step 3 - Cast for Impact Matt Damon, do I need to add anything here? Well actually yes, because it's not just the impact of a big name; it's also a blend of novelty and familiarity, as just explained. The well-known Matt Damon, but not cast as Jason Bourne but as an NGO founder with a high drive for impact. Step 4 - Craft the Narrative Arc Remember how Carl explained minutes ago how two pictures ended the Vietnam War? Or the heartbreaking story of the parents of the deceased football player in Nebraska? In Water.org's book, it's Matt Damon getting to know Wema along her long road to collect Water for her family. Step 5 - Zeigarnik Effect Don't close the action; let things open. That happens several times in Matt Damon and Gary White's story. But we had an even greater example with Carl's congressman story: when he says "I work in water security. And I leave it at that." the congressman can't resist the urge to get to know what happens next. Step 6 - Choose the Release Timing Wisely For the "Worth of Water" book, that was right in time to get people buzzing about it before the UN Water Conference, and guess who then got to feature in the opening segment of that Conference - probably also the only one worth watching? Along the same lines, that's word for word Carl's advice of picking the right story at the right time and constantly being on the lookout for planets aligning with that regard. So here you go, a bullet-proofed 6-step framework to get your local news reporter intrigued or to shed new light on your water innovation's impact. ➡️ Check out the entire article on how to finally build the Water Narrative
Productivity can be a struggle for many of us. Overflowing email inboxes, housework, social obligations – it can be easy to feel overwhelmed. However, one simple tool that can help us stay on top of everything is the to-do list. Write it down, do the tasks and cross them off – simple!对于我们许多人来说,生产力可能是一个难题。 爆满的电子邮件收件箱、家务、社会义务——很容易让人感到不知所措。 然而,一个可以帮助我们掌控一切的简单工具就是待办事项列表。 写下来,完成任务,然后划掉它们——简单!There are three key reasons why lists are beneficial, according to psychologist and author David Cohen. Firstly, they help to drown out the chaos and anxiety that comes with having never-ending tasks. By writing everything down, we don't have to rely on our memory and can instead focus on the task at hand. Secondly, lists provide structure and guidance, giving us a plan to follow. As well as this, our brains are more likely to retain information that is presented in a structured and organised manner. And finally, lists serve as proof of what we have achieved, which can help boost our sense of accomplishment and motivation. Another possible reason our brains love lists is because of something called the 'Zeigarnik Effect'. This is the name psychologists use for when we remember things we need to do, our unfinished tasks, better than things we have already completed. Researchers from Wake Forest University tested the interference of the Zeigarnik effect on a group of people. The experiment began with a warm-up task, though it was stopped half-way through, and only some people were allowed to make plans to finish it. The researchers found that the group permitted to plan had reduced anxiety and performed better in the second task. The problem was, the others still had the warm-up task stuck in their active memory – an unticked list of tasks. So, once we tick something off our list, our brain forgets about it and we can relax. All in all, it seems lists are a valuable tool for staying on top of life! 词汇表productivity 效率overflowing 爆满的,装满了的overwhelmed 难以承受的,不知所措的tool 方法,工具to-do list 待办事项清单task 任务cross off (从清单上)划掉drown out 盖过,压过never-ending 没完没了的write down 写下,记下at hand 手头的,手边的structure 条理,结构retain 记住structured 有条理的,结构清晰的organised 有条不紊的,安排有序的proof 证明accomplishment 成就motivation 动力unfinished 未完成的interference 干扰,干预active memory 短期记忆unticked 未(在清单上)勾掉的tick off 在(清单上)勾掉stay on top of 时时关注,掌握最新进展
Zeigarnik Effect Hello, this is Hall T. Martin with the Startup Funding Espresso -- your daily shot of startup funding and investing. The Zeigarnik effect is defined by Wikipedia as uncompleted or interrupted tasks that are remembered better than completed ones. Investors will remember the pitch that leaves them hanging more easily than those with closure. The cliffhanger in a serialized show is remembered because the action is left unfinished. It leaves the viewer with an uncompleted story creating cognitive tension. To use the Zeigarnik effect consider the following: In your pitch close with a cliffhanger ending by discussing an upcoming event such as closing a big sale or hiring a great team member. Use the pending outcome as an excuse to return to the investor later for a follow-up. Investors are often curious about startups and how they turn out later. Use this in setting up a follow-up call by offering to give them ‘the rest of the story'. Thank you for joining us for the Startup Funding Espresso where we help startups and investors connect for funding. Let's go startup something today.

DarkHorseSchooling.com In this episode, the formula for creating addictive, memorable, and attention-grabbing content is discussed. This formula can be used to make people want to read your content, watch your videos, and buy your products. The formula is simple and easy to use, and can help you create content that people will love. Tracy Brinkman explains that the Zeigarnik Effect states that people tend to remember unfinished tasks and incomplete tasks far better than they remember completed tasks. She gives the example of a waiter who is better at recalling orders that he has not yet delivered than the orders he has already fulfilled. The Zeigarnik Effect is a technique that entrepreneurs can use to keep their audience engaged by opening up loops that the audience desperately wants closed. An example of how to do this is by asking questions in social media posts and then providing regular updates on the story. The speaker explains how to use the Zeigarnik method to keep readers engaged in your content. This method involves teasing readers with something powerful, strange, or amazing that will be revealed later. However, the speaker warns against overusing this method, as it can anger readers and dissuade them from consuming your content. When you Zeigarnik your readers or your listeners or your viewers using this method, you'll find them far more happy to read all of your blog posts, all of your articles, listen to all of your podcasts, or listen to more of your podcasts and watch the full video that you post out there. How can I do this? Well, an example of how you could do this in social media is you can open loops between posts. You can do this by asking questions and then posting regular updates on a continuing story. Your goal in using the Zeigarnik Effect is to open loops that your audience desperately wants you to close. Think of the cliffhangers I previously mentioned and you'll know exactly what I mean now. The Zeigarnik Effect states something to the effect that people tend to remember unfinished tasks and incomplete tasks far better than they remember completed tasks. And I'll give you an example.
