EmKnits on Twitter and EmGem on Pinterest Shout outs Introduce yourself in the Ravelry group or leave us a review on itunes or google play music. Meet a knitter Hi! I am Circusbear on Ravelry, and lareefinnsson on Instagram. When I was about 13, I wanted to learn how to knit. My mother is left handed so I couldn’t learn from her. So my aunt taught my dad the basic knit stitch so he could teach me! And someone taught me how to purl along the road, lol. I knitted for a few years, and then forgot about it for 20 years! A friend of mine talked about it a few years ago and I have been HOOKED ever since! My first big project was a sweater when I was about 20! I still can’t believe I have made a sweater! It had a graph to do the color work & everything! And I did it! So I know I will do it again! My biggest Knitting disaster? Socks I so proudly knit for my son, making sure they were long enough…but they were far too narrow and he cannot even get them on his feet. So I need to figure out how to adjust socks to fit. What am I most proud of? That I am continuing both of my grandmothers heritage. They were both great needle work gals, and I have inherited stuff from them both to do with their love of needle work. And I feel honored. My favorite item to knit at the moment seem to be cowls! Lol. I am on my 3rd in a row! I am definitely a project knitter. I cannot have too many things on the go at the moment, or it bugs me, lol. My goals? A sweater! And figure out how to knit socks to feet size! I love Knitting because it keeps me mindful, and allows me to use the other side of my brain, and put down technology, (for the most part, as I use it for patterns, I do not do paper patterns usually). I can knit ANYWHERE. I do not do any other needle work. I do not really want to learn to crochet, as I love to knit! And crochet is so fast, that I may never knit again! Lol. I do though, want to learn some felting so I can make some felted gifts for Christmas! What are my other super powers? A have raised a son, I have a 16 year old daughter, I love horses but also have a fear of riding, so I need to work through that fear. My daughter is very tiny and handles her big horse just fine, so she proves to me all the time that I can do it when I make that step! I work full time, and also do project work (everything from bookkeeping, to advertising, to communications, to consulting) for other small business. That pays for the horse, & lessons, and my daughter’s math tutor! I guess that’s a bit of shameless advertising right there! On the next edition of Fiber Hooligan (04/17/14) my guest will be Julia Grunau of Patternfish.com.Julia grew up amongst engineers (dad & brother, summer jobs). She got an English degree, then worked for some R&D tech companies before 1990 becoming (as far as she knows) the first woman to sell printed circuit boards in Canada (having become interested in knitting two years before). After seven years, she decided that she would rather sell yarn instead of torpedo and telecommunications parts, so she became an outside sales rep, selling yarn to yarn stores in the Toronto area. In 2005 Julia became frustrated by having to go to 40 different websites to find PDFs to buy. She wanted a kind of Barnes & Nobles for knit/crochet PDFs and there wasn't one. It occurred to her that she might be well placed to do it (techie background, techie friends, lots of knitting contacts by then). So Patternfish.com was incorporated in October 2006 and launched a year and a half later, in June 2008.Since then Patternfish.com has become the largest pay-only site on the internet for knit and crochet designs, with over 16,000 top-notch patterns from hundreds of fine publishers (both corporate and indie) including Sirdar, Knitting Pure and Simple, Mirasol, Prism, Classic Elite Yarns, Lucy Neatby, Anne Hanson's Knitspot, Rowan, both the Noro and Debbie Bliss Magazines, Cabin Fever, Bergere de France, the UK Hand Knitting Association, and many others. Over 6,000 of them are exclusive to Patternfish.com as digital downloads, so there’s a lot of unique things to see.Julia is really smart and a lot of fun. I hope you’ll join us so you can hear from this remarkable woman.

Hello from an autumnal Cheshire Plain. In this episode I offer up a moment of ritual humiliation with an authority figure, reflect on professional behaviour and talk about record breakers. Swag from Knit Camp: Natural shades of Shetland sample packs from Jamieson & Smith; Rainbow Merino Tops from EasyKnits; a selection of luscious fibres from Freyalyn's Fibres; undyed Falkland (not in picture) from DT Craft & Design green 100% superwash merino from Abstract Cat; two 100% Superwash Merino from Left Coast Yarns; and a nice 100% wool (can't remember what!) in heathery pinks from Thistledown Yarns. Back to Back Challenge: Team members posing with the Provost of Stirling, Fergus Wood. From L to R: Astrid and Angela (co-owners of knittybitty.de), Susan, the Provost, Ann (in front), Miriam (behind) and Freyalyn. Sandra is behind Freyalyn and obscured in this shot. The finished article! From L to R: Ann, Susan, Sandra, Astrid, Steve modelled the sweater, Angela, Miriam and Freyalyn (with thanks to Woolly Thoughts for the use of the photograph). Hello from behind a pile of fibre and washing here in the Cheshire Plain. Another bumper episode this week, with a report from the weekdays of the recent UK Knit Camp at Stirling in Scotland. Despite organisational problems and a lack of communication for day visitors, I had a brilliant time. I took classes with Jon Dunn of EasyKnits, Lucy Neatby, Kate Tetlow and Mary Jane Mucklestone. Photos from Jon's spinning class... ...and shots of my handspun taken in Mary Jane's class. Animal, spun from batts from EverImprovingMe Navajo-plied fibre from DT Craft & Design bought at Wonderwool Wales in April I also have an overwhelming desire to make Lucy Neatby's Bubbles Scarf. Luckily there's a knit-a-long for the pattern in September. There's also an interview with the designer of the Knit Camp Vest, Ann Kingstone.  Finally, if you want to imagine me whirling Debbie Stoller around the dance floor, this video shows (sort of) what we were doing. Afterwards, we took a brief detour to get some AMAZING frozen yogurt, then went to the show-and-tell at Purlescence. Jasmin went to the show floor to pick up some Oak Grove yarn (to darn a pair socks) for Andrew. Jasmin went to talk to Cheryl Oberle, and while Andrew was waiting in line to pay, he picked up two skeins in "Stones". Jasmin also picked up some of the Creatively Dyed sock yarn to test drive, NOT in pinks and purples, selected by Andrew. It's also a good time to organize your Ravlery queue. Last year, Jasmin's list included Colrain lace (from Webs), fiber from Lisa Souza Dyeworks, and glass needles from Michael and Sheila Ernst.Jasmin talks about the peril of putting down yarn you might want around rabid knitters at Stitches. Jasmin recommends buying handpainted yarns in personEvents:Meet and greet with the Knitmore Girls at Stitches West in the Purlescence booth from 2-4pm, Saturday, February 28, 2009.Details: The "Style a Knit to Suit you" workshop will be hosted Sunday, January 25, 2009 from 10:00 am - 4:00 pm at Purlescence. The fee is $60. Do you look through knitting magazines and wish that the finished pattern size was larger (or smaller), or that one had a different neckline, or was shorter, that you could use a different yarn? If you attend this workshop all those problems will disappear. Sharon will help you through the process of overcoming those things that have always prevented you from knitting the patterns you love. You will look at shape that suits you and come up with a standard measurement guide especially for you. You'll learn the use of gauge and stitches, shaping and necklines that will make that perfect sweater for you. This is a rare opportunity to learn from a knitting legend. The shop will remain open until 5 pm on January 25 for meet and greet and book signing with Sharon. Call Purlescence at (408) 735-9276 to register.
