Matchmaking and the Marriage Market in Postrevolutionary France (Cornell UP, 2024) gives an historical account of the evolution of the matchmaking business during the Second Empire in France. The book explores how the matchmaking industry at the Postrevolutionary France was shaped by commodified stories of hope and fantasy, including democratization of the matchmaking business, which aroused the interest of democratized French audience, including lower-middle-class individuals, through exaggerated advertisements in the media productions. The book also gives an exposition on the period of French Revolution and how it significantly altered family legislation and marriage practices, leading to increased freedom in spouse selection and the rise of professional matchmakers like Claude Viome. The book highlights how the revolutionary reforms impact on marriage of the French populace, including the age reduction policy for the majority and lifting of parental consent for marriage, as well as introducing divorce by mutual consent in 1792. According to Andrea Mansker, the changes in age and divorce policy, combined with increased mobility and changing social patterns in Paris, encouraged young people across classes to demand more freedom in spouse selection, leading Claude Viome to market his services as a way to bypass traditional family negotiations in courtship. The book relates the1804 Civil Code, explaining how it preserved revolutionary reforms like equality before the law but restored traditional family structures by treating married women and children as legal minors under their husband's authority. It exposes how divorce became less common and eventually outlawed in 1816, and detailed the French Supreme Court's 1855 ruling against matchmaker contracts, which viewed marriage as a sacred agreement distinct from commercial transactions. Mariam Olugbodi is a university teacher and a writer, she is the author of the monograph titled: “Stylistic Features in the 2011 and 2012 Final Matches Commentaries in the UEFA Champions League”, published by Grin Verlag. Mariam's greatest dream is seeing a world where knowledge is accessible to all. She does this through her volunteering roles on open knowledge platforms as a host and an editor. On this episode of Taste Buds with Deb, host Debra Eckerling speaks with matchmaker, dating coach, and TV writer Jaydi Samuels Kuba, author of "Your Last First Date: Secrets from a Hollywood Matchmaker." Food, dating, and Jewish tradition are all connected. They compliment each other. There's a right and wrong way to choose venues and food for first dates; like finding someone's perfect match, there's an art and craft to it. For Kuba, matchmaking was a natural progression for her personality; it leaned into her love for connecting people to what - or who - they need. "I always would help people find new friends, find new jobs, find a roommate, whatever people were searching for in their life," she explains. "As I started getting older, and there was more of a need around me, whether it was friends … co coworkers or colleagues looking for love, I just … started matching people in that way." Kuba was working as a TV writer for "Family Guy" when she started her matchmaking side hustle, which turned into a full-blown business and passion. It's also how she met her husband, who she matched five times before they started dating. Her book, which she began working on during the writers strike, started as a "how to" before her publisher suggested she changed to a narrative style. In it, she gives dating advice to the characters in the book; info anyone reading can learn from. Jaydi Samuels Kuba shares her matchmaking journey, what she hopes readers will get out of "Your Last First Date," and lots of dating advice, especially as it relates to restaurants and food recs. She also talks about her bubbe's beloved Jewmaican beef patties recipe, which you can find at JewishJournal.com/podcasts. In today's fast-paced and competitive market, the success of a product often hinges on how effectively it is communicated to potential consumers. As discussed in a recent podcast featuring representatives from Kontrol Media, a hybrid consulting firm and marketing agency, the importance of clear product messaging cannot be overstated. The conversation explores the significance of focused messaging, the process of developing it, and its impact on a product's market introduction.Focus on Clear Product MessagingAt the heart of effective product messaging lies the ability to distill complex features into a compelling narrative that resonates with the target audience. Kontrol Media emphasizes the need to go beyond flashy logos and impressive promotional materials, advocating for a deeper understanding of the product's core value. The analogy of becoming a "machete, not a Swiss Army knife" aptly illustrates this point. A machete is designed for a specific purpose and is therefore more effective in fulfilling that role, while a Swiss Army knife, with its myriad of tools, can often overwhelm the user and dilute its primary function. This perspective highlights the necessity for companies to identify and communicate a singular, powerful message that encapsulates what makes their product unique and valuable. To achieve this clarity in messaging, Kontrol Media employs a comprehensive approach that involves collaboration with the product's creators and extensive market research. The first step in this process is to engage with the company to understand not just the features of the product, but also the story behind it. What problem does the product solve? How does it improve the user's life? By answering these questions, companies can begin to craft a narrative that speaks directly to consumer needs and desires.Understand the Target MarketMarket research plays a crucial role in refining this messaging. By conducting competitive analysis and gathering insights into consumer preferences, companies can identify gaps in the market and tailor their messaging accordingly. This research often includes direct conversations with potential customers to gauge their reactions to various aspects of the product. Such feedback is invaluable, as it allows companies to adjust their messaging to better align with consumer expectations and to highlight the features that will resonate most strongly with their target audience. The example discussed - a company developing advanced earbuds capable of controlling various devices through biometric feedback - illustrates the challenges of clear messaging. While the product boasts numerous features, the key to successful marketing lies in distilling these capabilities into a clear and compelling narrative. Instead of overwhelming potential customers with a laundry list of functions, the company should focus on one or two standout features that address specific pain points or enhance the user experience. This focused approach not only simplifies the message but also makes it easier for consumers to understand the product's value proposition. Moreover, clear product messaging can significantly influence a company's go-to-market strategy. In a crowded marketplace, where consumers are bombarded with information, a well-crafted message can cut through the noise and capture attention. It can drive marketing campaigns, inform sales strategies, and ultimately impact the product's adoption rate. When consumers can easily grasp the essence of a product and its benefits, they are more likely to engage with it, share it, and advocate for it within their networks.ConclusionIn conclusion, the importance of clear product messaging cannot be overstated. As highlighted with Kontrol Media, effective messaging requires a deep understanding of the product, thorough market research, and a focus on communicating a singular value proposition. By honing in on what truly matters to consumers, companies can enhance their marketing efforts, foster stronger connections with their audience, and ultimately drive the success of their products in the marketplace. In an age where clarity is often overshadowed by complexity, the ability to articulate a clear and compelling message is a vital skill that can set a product apart from the competition.Interview by Don Baine, The Gadget Professor.Sponsored by: Get $5 to protect your credit card information online with Privacy. This Flashback Friday is from episode 613 published last Dec 29, 2015. Jason ushers us into this episode by taking us through Julie Malinowski's article "6 Trends Among Landlords and Tips to Outperform the Norm". He also reminds us there are a few tickets left to the upcoming Meet the Masters event and about the upcoming Venture Alliance Mastermind in Dubai. In today's guest interview, Alvin E. Roth has written a book about markets. If you are wondering what type of market, as Mr. Roth tells us himself, it's not important what type of market. It's the market itself. He guides us through the interview discussing chapters of his book, "Who Gets What and Why" with real life examples of the organ donation market, the online matchmaking market and even shares his thoughts on how realtors have survived in our internet-based, do it yourself economy. Looking for love without the burnout? We sit down with Cheryl Maida, Director of Matchmaking at Matchmaking.com, to explore how high-quality, values-driven introductions can replace endless swiping with genuine connection. Cheryl has spent nearly 16 years guiding singles through a noisy dating landscape, and she lays out a clear path from fatigue to fit: fewer introductions, deeper screening, and coaching that helps you focus on what actually sustains a relationship. We dig into the real tradeoffs between dating apps and professional matchmaking: speed and volume versus trust and compatibility. Cheryl explains how her team interviews every client, screens for core values, life goals, and personality, and crafts concise bios that go beyond photos. You'll hear why long checklists sabotage momentum, how to narrow to your three or four non-negotiables, and what happens when you challenge assumptions about age and body type. Her story about revealing age last—after interest sparks from substance—shows how often we're drawn to energy and lifestyle over a number. The conversation also tackles the modern mess: scams, ghosting, and even AI-generated profiles that make it harder to trust what you see. Cheryl shares practical ways to meet people offline with intention plus small social habits that make you more approachable. We cover who can join her database, why women are free and men are clients, the firm boundaries she holds with misaligned expectations, and the expanding niches her team supports, including a fast-growing community of gay men and professionals across the country. If you want a smarter strategy for dating—one built on clarity, compatibility, and credible introductions—this conversation offers a hopeful reset. Subscribe, share with a friend who's swiped out, and leave a review to tell us which dating “rule” you're ready to rethink. In this episode of The Italian American Podcast, John and Pat welcome Erma Camporese —the self-styled "Queen of Graham Avenue" and "Love Doctor"—for a wide-ranging conversation steeped in neighborhood humor, inherited customs, and the unmistakable rhythm of Italian American life. What begins with tenants, cash rent, and "favorite tenant status" quickly becomes a vivid portrait of how close-knit communities transmit culture through stories, sayings, and shared memory. Erma explores the world of malocchio as she learned it from her mother—its gestures, warnings, and protective rituals—arguing that the "evil eye" is more than superstition, with roots in Southern Italy and Eastern Christian tradition. Told with warmth and wit, these stories balance laughter with a serious respect for practices often misunderstood or dismissed. The conversation then turns to Italian American mourning culture: "doom patrol" phone trees, funeral flower hierarchies, chapel politics, and ritual phrases like "she looks like she's sleeping." Along the way, Irma reflects on how her corner-of-the-neighborhood presence evolved into matchmaking and advice-giving, and why being the "Love Doctor" is ultimately about tending to souls, not just romance.
