EEG-neurofeedback for promoting neuromodulation in the elderly: evidence from a double-blind study

Link to bioRxiv paper: http://biorxiv.org/cgi/content/short/2022.09.26.509227v1?rss=1 Authors: Andrade, K., Guieysse, T., Razafimahatratra, S., Houmani, N., Klarsfeld, A., Dreyfus, G., Dubois, B., Medani, T., Vialatte, F. Abstract: Background: Electroencephalography (EEG) is a non-invasive method that records the brain signals with time resolution in the millisecond range, thereby allowing the monitoring of subjects mental states in real-time. Using appropriate biomarkers extracted from these EEG signals and presenting them back in a neurofeedback loop can foster neural compensation mechanisms by teaching subjects to modulate their brain activity. Over the last decades, several neural biomarkers of aging have been described, with growing evidence suggesting that neuromodulation may have an important role in regulating brain activity in the elderly. Methods and objectives: We used three neural biomarkers of aging, namely the Peak Alpha Frequency, the Gamma-band synchronization, and the Theta/Beta ratio, in the framework of an EEG-based brain-computer interface, with two main objectives: 1) to test whether healthy elderly people with subjective memory complaints may learn to modulate their brain activity through EEG-neurofeedback training in a double-blind, placebo-controlled study; and 2) whether that neuromodulation may have a positive impact on subjects cognition. Results: A significant self-modulation of two neural biomarkers that usually decline with age was observed exclusively in the group of subjects who underwent the EEG-neurofeedback training, in clear contrast with the subjects who received the sham feedback. This neuromodulation did not have a direct effect on subjects cognitive abilities, as measured by neuropsychological tests pre- versus post-training, probably because all the subjects accurately performed these tests already at study entry (i.e., pre-training). Conclusion: The results of this double-blind study are in line with one of the main criteria for successful neuromodulation, thus encouraging research on EEG-neurofeedback as a promising non-pharmacological intervention for promoting self-regulation of brain activity with a view to improve cognitive aging. S to kršitvijo prinaša dvoumnost rabe besed in odpira morebitne dvojne pomene. V slovenskem izboru so poleg esejev haikuji, pesmi v prozi, soneti, gazele, ode, himne, pesmi s prostim verzom ...

Last month, a military coup took place in the Sudan, barely two years after a popular uprising forced the removal of dictator, Omar al-Bashir, who had ruled the country for 30 years with an iron grip with the support of the military and Sudanese Islamists. The 2019 protest movement was not able to exclude the military from national politics entirely. In August of that year, a power sharing arrangement was reached among the military leaders, a coalition of groups and organizations called the Forces for Freedom and Change and a joint ruling body, named the sovereign Council, which was established to govern the Sudan for a little over three years until elections could be held. Following last month's overthrow, coup leader, Gen Burhan, declared the dissolution of the Sovereign Council as well as that of the transitional government of Prime Minister Hamdok. Meanwhile, across the Sudan, millions of people have engaged in protests, acts of civil disobedience and strikes to denounce the military's power grab at the peril of their lives. GUESTS Khalid Medani is an associate professor of political science and Islamic studies at McGill University and author of the new book Black Markets and Militants: Informal Networks in the Middle East and Africa. In this book, Khalid Mustafa Medani explains why youth are attracted to militant organizations, examining the specific role economic globalization, in the form of outmigration and expatriate remittance inflows, plays in determining how and why militant activists emerge. The study challenges existing accounts that rely primarily on ideology to explain militant recruitment. Based on extensive fieldwork, Medani offers an in-depth analysis of the impact of globalization, neoliberal reforms and informal economic networks as a conduit for the rise and evolution of moderate and militant Islamist movement Elsadig Elsheikh is the Director of the Global Justice Program at the Othering & Belonging Institute, where he oversees the program's projects on corporate power, food systems, forced migration, inclusiveness index, Islamophobia, and human rights mechanisms; and manages the Shahidi Project, and the Nile Project.

Rockstar teeb enda PC launcheri, mida see tähendab? Discordi tasuta mängud kaovad, sest keegi ei mänginud neid. Final Fantasy VII remaster kõlab tegelikult päris huvitavalt. Rein räägib edasi World of Warcraftist ning Martin tegi Man of Medani läbi ja on mänginud The Hong Kong Massacre’t. Soovituseks on Batmani triloogia, mis on Epicu poes tasuta.

Telltale’i tahetakse tagasi tuua, aga veits veidralt ning Hades tuleb Steami. Mario Kart Tour tuleb septembri lõpus välja ja Martin on maitsnud Man of Medani. Soovituseks on Humble Bundle õudukapakk.

Today on Sojourner Truth, we go in depth into Sudan. Formerly a colony of the U.K. and Egypt, its history goes back to the days of the Pharaohs. Sudan is located in North Africa, bordering the Red Sea, Egypt, Libya, Chad and the Central African Republic. In 1989, Lieutenant Omar Al-Bashir seized power in a coup and ruled Sudan for 30 years. Keep in mind that Sudan was the largest country on the continent of Africa until it was divided in a U.S.-backed deal in 2011 with the secession of the oil-rich South Sudan. In December 2018, protests broke out in several cities across Sudan against worsening living conditions and rising costs of living. Those protests morphed into a mass movement against President Omar Al-Bashir, calling for his resignation. Indeed, he was forced to step down, with the military taking credit for removing him. 70 percent of protesters are women, according to the BBC. After Al-Bashir's ousting, demonstrators continue to demand democracy and an end to military rule in favor of civilian rule. Today, we delve into these recent developments in Sudan as well as the country's historical context. Our guests are Dr. Nada Mustafa Ali and Dr. Khalid Mustafa Medani. Dr Ali is a scholar who engages with questions about social change and transformation in Sudan and beyond through her teaching, research, and activism. Dr. Ali teaches in the Women's, Gender, and Sexuality Studies Department and is a core faculty in the Human Rights Minor at the University of Massachusetts Boston. Dr. Medani is an associate professor of political science at McGill University, and Chair of the African Studies Program. He has published extensively on political Islam in Sudan, civil conflict and the roots of the Sudanese Uprising.
