introduction: Welcome to West Virginia Uncommonplace with J.R. as your host. In this episode, we delve into the captivating world of American Dad, exploring its journey from inception to its challenges and eventual resurgence. Overview of American Dad: American Dad, created by Seth MacFarlane, Mike Barker, and Matt Weitzman, premiered in 2005 as a companion series to Family Guy. Set in the fictional town of Langley Falls, Virginia, the show revolves around the eccentric Smith family and their extraordinary adventures. Early Success and Memorable Episodes: American Dad quickly captured viewers' attention with episodes like "Homeland Insecurity" and "The American Dad After School Special." The clever writing, unique humor, and relatable Virginia setting drew fans in and established the show's potential. Challenges Faced: As the series progressed, American Dad encountered difficulties in finding its own identity within Fox's animation lineup. The dominance of The Simpsons and Family Guy made it challenging to stand out, leading to a period of stagnation and a struggle for differentiation. Shift in Focus: American Dad's journey was further complicated by a shift in focus within Fox's animation domination landscape. Family Guy received more attention from the network, resulting in American Dad's subtle humor and cleverness taking a backseat. The show faced limitations in its development and potential growth. Move to TBS: After being canceled by Fox, American Dad found a new home on TBS. The move allowed the show to regain momentum and explore edgier themes. However, the TBS era also presented its own set of challenges, with some writing lacking the depth and cleverness of the earlier seasons. Lack of Merchandising and Additional Content: Unlike other animated shows, American Dad has not enjoyed extensive licensed merchandise, videos, or made-for-TV specials. The show has often been treated as the underdog, receiving less promotional attention compared to Family Guy and The Simpsons. Disney Acquisition and Unique Position: The Disney acquisition of Fox further complicated the situation for American Dad. As Disney's focus leans toward other properties, American Dad doesn't fit into the Disney ecosystem and finds itself thriving on platforms like Hulu or TBS. Conclusion: The rise, fall, and resurgence of American Dad exemplify the challenges faced by animated shows in a competitive television landscape. Despite its initial success, the show struggled to maintain its footing due to shifting priorities. However, its move to TBS provided new opportunities for continued entertainment and engagement with its dedicated fanbase. Outro: Thank you for joining us on this insightful journey through the world of American Dad. Remember to stay curious and embrace the uncommon. This is J.R. from West Virginia and Convoys, signing off until next time.
"It's a bit like The Beatles..." Returning after a long delay, Dan, Stella, Ian and (in a surprise telephone cameo) Howard commence their latest series with a discussion of 1976's The Omen, the first in a series of retrospectives on The Omen Trilogy, inspired by the fact that all three films (plus the 2006 remake of the original) are now on Disney+. (However, Omen IV: The Awakening, 1991's forgotten TV movie continuation, is nowhere to be seen, and won't be discussed.) Go to Disney+ to watch the 1976 film and the remake, both discussed here. To watch's Dan's short film Terror of the Many-Coloured Slinky (2003), go here. Like that film (and, indeed, The Omen), this episode is absolutely lathered in the gorgeous musical score of composer Jerry Goldsmith, conducted by Lionel Newman, just for fun. No copyright infringement is intended, of course. Kirsty will be back in our next episode, which will focus on Mike Barker's Midnight Mass. En écoutant un podcast sur les Filles du Docteur March, Aline réalise qu'elle est “aromantique”. He's visited 106 College Football Bowl Subdivision (FBS) Stadiums, and he's not stopping until he's gotten to all 130; Mike Barker joins us to talk about his journey and one of his "secret-not-so-secret" favorite teams, the University of Hawaii, whom he's watched play home at Aloha Stadium and even on the road. He recently met up with the host, Wayne Coito, and his fellow UH SuperFans in Laramie, Wyoming, where the Rainbow Warriors took on the Cowboys. Upon the conclusion of the third quarter of the game, Mike started his 10-hour drive to Lawrence, Kansas, to see the Jayhawks play the very next morning--he's as fanatical as they come. We also talk to Mike about his tweet earlier in the day calling out the UH Pay Per View deal that requires fans in the state to pay $70 to watch the game. He talks about how this "trash deal" is destroying the fan base and how any other fan from across the country would agree. Wayne will also preview the game between UH and undefeated Nevada Reno this Saturday at Aloha Stadium. The nation's 4th leading passing attack features some familiar faces on the sideline, including former Hawaii record-setting QB Timmy Chang, now the Tight Ends coach at Reno. UNR Head Coach Jay Norvell served on UH Coach Todd Graham's staff when the two were at Arizona State. We also check in with Warrior Nation and get the pulse of what's going on on Social Media. How do the fans really feel about Coach Graham after starting 2-3?
We had our good friend Mike Barker with Heroes sports on the show today!
Mike grew up around the military as his dad was involved in the Army for 41 years. Mike was a great athlete from a young age and could have tried both baseball or football. He chose to pursue football and played college football before realizing that his dream of playing professional football was not to be. After trying college after returning home, he quickly realized he wanted something else. Mike joined the Army and served eight years as a combat medic. After getting out Mike went back to school and got a business degree. In 2015 he founded Heroes Sports as a non profit. Imagine your normal work day. You have folks that get on your nerves, folks that make it hard to come back the next day. Now throw in the dynamic of those at your work are recovering from both mental and physical battle wounds. As a combat medic, Mike Barker saw the affect battle had on the psyche and morale of soldiers. He himself had mental demons flexing daily on him as he made his rounds with his brothers and sisters going through their own daily recovery. Then one day, the banter shared on the hardwood or gridiron inspired Mike to help those recovering from burns and amputations to quiet those demons. The sports field brought his patients together, competitiveness tapped into, and the pain from sports started to bring healing. That inspiration led Mike to start Heroes Sports, a non-profit dedicated to bringing healing through sports to those dealing with the mental and physical affects of war-time injuries.
