This is: [Crosspost]: Huge volcanic eruptions: time to prepare (Nature), published by Mike Cassidy on August 19, 2022 on The Effective Altruism Forum. Lara Mani and I have a comment article published in Nature this week about large magnitude volcanic eruptions: TLDR: I also wrote a twitter thread here: This is more condensed focus piece, but contains elements we've covered in these posts too. This is really the start of the work we've been doing in this area, we're hoping to quantify how globally catastrophic large eruptions would be for our global food, water and critical systems. From there, we'll have a better idea of the most effective mitigation strategies. But because this is such a neglected area (screenshot below), we know that even modest investment and effort will go a long way. We highlight several ways we think could help save a lot of lives both in the near term (smaller, more frequent eruptions) and the in future (large mag and super-eruptions): a) pinpointing where the biggest risks area/volcanoes are b) increasing and improving monitoring c) increasing preparedness (e.g. nowcasting-see below), and d) research volcano geoengineering (the ethics of which we're working with Anders Sandberg on). The last point may interest some others in the x-risk community, as potential solutions like these ones (screenshot below), could potentially help mitigate the effects from nuclear, and asteroid winters too. We're having conversations with atmospheric scientists about this type of research. Another way tech-savy EAs might be able to help with is the creation of 'nowcasting' technology, which again would be useful for a range of Global Catastrophic Risks. The paper has been covered a fair bit in the international media, (e.g.) and we feel like we could use this mometumn to make some tractable improvements to global volcanic risk. If you'd like to help fund our work or discuss any of these ideas with us then get in touch! Thanks for listening. Welcome to The Nonlinear Library, where we use Text-to-Speech software to convert the best writing from the Rationalist and EA communities into audio. This is: Future Matters: March 2022, published by Pablo on March 22, 2022 on The Effective Altruism Forum. We think our civilization near its meridian, but we are yet only at the cock-crowing and the morning star. Ralph Waldo Emerson Welcome to Future Matters, a newsletter about longtermism. Each month we collect and summarize longtermism-relevant research, share news from the longtermism community, and feature a conversation with a prominent longtermist. Future Matters is crossposted to Substack and available as a podcast. Research We are typically confident that some things are conscious (humans), and that some things are not (rocks); other things we're very unsure about (insects). In this post, Amanda Askell shares her views about AI consciousness. It seems unlikely that current AI systems are conscious, but they are improving and there's no great reason to think we will never create conscious AI systems. This matters because consciousness is morally-relevant, e.g. we tend to think that if something is conscious, we shouldn't harm it for no good reason. Since it's much worse to mistakenly deny something moral status than to mistakenly attribute it, we should take a cautious approach when it comes to AI: if we ever have reason to believe some AI system is conscious, we should start to treat it as a moral patient. This makes it important and urgent that we develop tools and techniques to assess whether AI systems are conscious, and related questions, e.g. whether they are suffering. The leadership of the Global Catastrophic Risk Institute issued a Statement on the Russian invasion of Ukraine. The authors consider the effects of the invasion on (1) risks of nuclear war and (2) other global catastrophic risks. They argue that the conflict increases the risk of both intentional and inadvertent nuclear war, and that it may increase other risks primarily via its consequences on climate change, on China, and on international relations. Earlier this year, Hunga Tonga-Hunga Ha'apai—a submarine volcano in the South Pacific—produced what appears to be the largest volcanic eruption of the last 30 years. In What can we learn from a short preview of a super-eruption and what are some tractable ways of mitigating, Mike Cassidy and Lara Mani point out that this event and its cascading impacts provide a glimpse into the possible effects of a much larger eruption, which could be comparable in intensity but much longer in duration. The main lessons the authors draw are that humanity was unprepared for the eruption and that its remote location dramatically minimized its impacts. To better prepare for these risks, the authors propose better identifying the volcanoes capable of large enough eruptions and the regions most affected by them; building resilience by investigating the role that technology could play in disaster response and by enhancing community-led resilience mechanisms; and mitigating the risks by research on removal of aerosols from large explosive eruptions and on ways to reduce the explosivity of eruptions by fracking or drilling. The second part in a three-part series of great power conflict, Stephen Clare's How likely is World War III? attempts to estimate the probability of great power conflict this century as well as its severity, should it occur. Tentatively, Clare assigns a 45% chance to a confrontation between great powers by 2100, an 8% chance of a war much worse than World War II, and a 1% chance of a war causing human extinction. Note that some of the key sources in Clare's analysis rely on the Correlates of War dataset, which is less informative about long-run trends in global conflict than is generally assumed; see Ben Garfinkel's comment for discussion. Malevolent nonstate actors with access to advanced technology can increase the probability of an existential cata...

Welcome to The Nonlinear Library, where we use Text-to-Speech software to convert the best writing from the Rationalist and EA communities into audio. This is: On the assessment of volcanic eruptions as global catastrophic or existential risks , published by Mike Cassidy, Lara Mani on the AI Alignment Forum. By Mike Cassidy and Lara Mani Ord 2020, and others have suggested that the existential risk posed by volcanoes is the largest of the potential ‘natural' catastrophes - 100 times that of asteroids and comets combined. As volcanologists we wanted to delve a bit deeper into the x - risks and also global catastrophic risks from large explosive eruptions, adding insight from the latest volcano and climate science, including challenging some of the assumptions that have been put forward so far. Significant global impacts from large explosive eruptions will be described, which have a ~1 in 6 probability of occurring this century. Introduction I'm Mike and new to EA world, having just been introduced to it early this year from a friend in Oxford and having thoroughly enjoyed reading The Precipice, the super-eruption part sparked my interest. I'm a senior research fellow based in the earth science department at the University of Oxford, and specialise in volcano research. I research a range of different aspects in volcanology, but principally I aim to understand what influences the explosivity of eruptions and how best to forecast them. Lara works for the Centre for the Study of Existential Risk (CSER) at the University of Cambridge and has been thinking about extreme volcanic risk scenarios since joining the centre in January 2020. In particular, Lara has been exploring the systemic nature of volcanic risk from the view point of cascading and compound risks. The idea of this post here is to provide some thoughts that might interest the EA community from a different perspective. I am also slowly catching up with the existential risk literature (this is partly time, but also because I wanted to provide a fresh insight initially without thoughts being diluted by later reading), so if you know literature that may be connected with some of the themes we cover, then please let us know. This really is the start of us thinking about this topic and as you'll see there's lots of uncertainty and we'd welcome some thoughts and questions about this generally to assess the gaps going forward. Challenging assumptions and why we think the current risk may be underappreciated The focus of impacts from large explosive eruptions has so far focussed on the initial cooling effect (which could be substantial), but the effects are far more varied than this, which we'll discuss in later in this article and in our modern, connected world, perhaps means that we could more vulnerable to these. In this post we aim to challenge two notions that have been put forward in the existential risk community previously: 1) That the risk from volcanic eruptions is ‘natural' and hasn't changed/won't change going forward 2) That humans have survived 2000 centuries therefore the natural risk must be low The first assumption is challenged by recent studies which show that anthropogenic climate change increases the climatic cooling effect of large magnitude explosive eruptions (potentially by as much as 60%; Aubry, 2021 & Fasullo et al 2017); climate change itself also may increase the likelihood of triggering eruptions through glacial retreat and sea level change. Furthermore as we explore below, the more extreme climatic effects are not always attributed to the largest magnitude eruptions, in other words, you don't need a ‘supereruption' to cause global climatic impacts. All these factors, along with new ice core records showing large explosive eruptions are more common than values Ord 2020 used, mean that our current base rates for global catastrophic risk and existential risks might be higher than initially appreciated. The 2nd assumption seems to be more based on hu...

In each step of his journey, Mike felt the importance of staying planted to truly hone an entrepreneurial and creative attitude. For Mike, this has included a deep investigation into vulnerabilities of the Y Movement, and seeking affective solutions. This type of creative thinking served Mike and his branch well throughout the pandemic. Key takeaways in this episode include:    -Vulnerability as Opportunity- addressing our weak spots can help us blossom. Mike realized some key areas within his Y that could use some scrubbing, like requiring paper forms instead of online registration, and losing members to more expensive facilities. weight machines that don't address members' holistic fitness goals.    -Member Results Biased Program Strategy-this all began with a shift to functional fitness. Noticing that this type of exercise relies on natural movements of the body, Mike realized that building a functional fitness affiliate within their Y would help them prevent membership loss and better serve a range of fitness levels. Members of all ages are now able to engage in this programming and see improved fitness results from their efforts.   -Redesigned Fitness Centers- In adopting a program strategy rooted in results and data, Mike was able to see benefit in redesigning the space toward these efforts of achieving members' goals. This was a heavy lift with lots of moving parts and coordination, but ultimately led to major growth in membership joins.     This interview took place on March 19, 2020.

133 - Welcome back! We are returning from our COVID-induced hiatus by covering a topic we've never touched before! What is probably the most personal, sensual gift that you could give your fiancé on the morning of your wedding day? A boudoir photobook! This is a unique take on the wedding-day-gift trend, and can be a way for brides to really up the ante, as many couples look to give each other intensely meaningful gifts on the morning of their wedding day. But how do you go about finding a boudoir photographer? What should you look for? What should you watch out for? Luckily, our guest today is Mike Cassidy, a New Jersey-based veteran boudoir photographer; Mike is here to answer our questions (yes, even Atonn's silly ones) and de-mystify the process of deciding whether or not a boudoir photoshoot is right for you. Mike Cassidy is a boudoir photographer from New Jersey who is passionate about both photography and helping his clients to remain invested in themselves. While his clients receive an incredible experience and beautiful one-of-a-kind photos, the real service he provides is the joy and heart filling experience every time his images are viewed. Mike learned long ago, there is a lot more to boudoir photography than what immediately meets the eye, and it’s this ability to make women feel unique and beautiful which is the real reward in operating a boudoir business. Mike started over ten years ago, and has photographed hundreds of women. Throughout the course of guiding these clients through the boudoir process, Mike discovered there were way too many women who lacked accurate information about boudoir, and even worse, some had less than satisfactory experiences with previous photographers due to this issue. He knew he needed to take action. Mike has become an advocate and resource of “real” authentic information about boudoir photography to help others make smart choices when choosing a photographer, so everyone can enjoy boudoir and have a positive experience. http://www.mikecassidyphotography.com/ https://www.instagram.com/michaelcassidy/ https://www.facebook.com/MikeCassidyPhotography #boudoir #njboudoir #photographer #boudoirphotography #boudoirinspiration #boudoirstudio #bridalboudoir #bride --- This episode is sponsored by · Anchor: The easiest way to make a podcast. https://anchor.fm/app Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/your-i-do-crew/support

Assessment in the Diploma Programme is a combination of multiple measures of a student's progress and capabilities over the entire course of study. Most courses include a final examination but many do not. All have some form of internal assessment conducted during the course. These internal assessments may be laboratory investigations, research projects, or text analyses. Many courses have oral commentaries conducted, recorded and uploaded by the IB teacher. With all these different means to assess Diploma Programme students, a single number score represents much more than just how well they can perform on a written exam.Mike Cassidy, a Diploma Programme coordinator, Film and TOK teacher, and a Film examiner, helps us better understand the multi-modal DP assessment system.Links to Diploma Programme assessment and exam information.

He talks about the vetting process to become an examiner and the ways in which being an examiner help him to be a better IB teacher. Mike also talks about how examiners are kept to the same rigorous standards through a system of "seeding" sample exams that ensures every examiner assesses papers fairly no matter where they are located. We think you will find it fascinating to learn about the multi-tiered system of quality control that lies at the heart of IB exam scoring. Mike also makes the case for becoming an IB examiner - the IB is always looking looking for more teachers to join this important cadre of experts. Mike was a crucial member of my support system when I was going through my divorce. Mike and I met up at Franklin Canyon in Los Angeles to discuss the importance of good quality and supportive friends when going through a traumatic experience. Surround Yourself with the right people 03:06 - It is critical to surround yourself with the right people. Mike and Duane discuss the importance of this and Mike talks about his thoughts we he first witnessed me going through the trauma of my experience. He offers his experience on what I personally needed and how he felt it was important to be a good listener. SPECIAL NOTE This episode was filmed and recorded outdoors. So throughout the episode you will hear ambient noises such as airplanes and some machines. Our friendship BEFORE the divorce 07:51 - Mike was friends with Duane for a few years before this experience. They discuss their friendship and some of the things they did prior to it. It is also important to recognize the significant difference when someone is going through the realities of this distress. Mike talked about how many people will tend to avoid people when they are going through something like this, however in his opinion, he believed that makes things worse and he never did that with Duane. Duane talks about how one of the inspirations of doing the DSD - Dad Surviving Divorce YouTube channel and this podcast was to give back and pay it forward to help others going through this. Not everyone has a good friend or support like he did with Mike and a handful of others and he felt creating the DSD online community could be a lifeline for people who were struggling. Did you think I would make it through it? 12:31 - Duane asks the question, “Did you think I would make it through it?” Mike hinted that he wasn’t sure but he focused on Duane’s personal growth and his observations when he was watching him go through this. The unfortunate truth of these experiences is the amount of time to recovery and they both acknowledge that it took several years to really start to heal. Mike said he was impressed to watch how Duane was able to turn things around, go through this rough stuff, and take back control of his life. He was also impressed with the level of success Duane continues to have in his professional life and with this YouTube and Podcast adventure. Mike's thought when I told him about the channel 18:38 - Duane asks Mike what he thought when he first told him about the idea of starting a YouTube channel. At first he thought maybe it would be something about technology and he was surprised when he learned it was a divorce recovery channel. They talk about the effect the channel has had on Duane’s life and the impact it has had on other people who view the channel. Advice for the friend helping a friend 23:03 - It can be very difficult for a friend to watch someone going through this. Duane asks Mike what advice he would offer to someone watching their good friend go through something like this. Mike reaffirms the need to be a good listener and to be patient with the person. He mentioned how you never know what is really happening on the other side of the phone or text. He said it is important to realize that the person is reaching out for help and validation and it is important to be a “good human” and be there for them. Critical reality of your friends 27:18 - Duane and Mike talk about the critical reality of when your friends just are not hitting the mark. If your support group/person is not patient, supportive, a good listener, or not “there” then you have to realize they are not good for your recovery nor your healing.. It is imperative to surround yourself with good quality and supportive people. If you are not getting support from the people around you then you have to find other people, or communities, who are. It is not normal for people to not want to help you. Your situation today isn't your forever 29:25 - It is easy to become trapped in the mindset that this is your forever. But it is critically important to realize that isn’t the case. This time is traumatic and extremely painful but you will not be here forever. Duane and Mike talk about how there was a time they didn’t know each other. Duane then goes on to talk about new friends he’s met post-divorce that have had a significant positive impact on his life. It is important to keep the hope that you can overcome this and have a good life. The dull pain does go away with time 32:47 - The emotional pain and distress over a break is significant but couple that with a narcissistic toxic divorce and that is compounded further. Duane talks bout how he felt that “dull pain” would be with him forever. He goes on to say there was a time where he thought it would never go away. But the reality is, many years later, it has and the pain isn’t a daily part of his life any longer. How this project has helped me 35:43 - Duane talks about how the YouTube channel and Podcast has helped him. It has given him an avenue to take something so traumatic and devastating and turn it into something positive. Mike talks about his experience watching Duane through the last couple of year as he’s built this.

In celebration of Global Running Day, and our exciting new partnership with Westin Hotels & Resorts, I'm thrilled to share this podcast that I recorded with Westin's Global Run Concierge, Chris Heuisler. Wait, what's a Run Concierge? Well, just picture a regular concierge at a hotel that can give you recommendations on where to eat, or what to do while in town.  Well that's what a Run Concierge does– but to help you stay active and healthy while traveling. Do all hotels have a Run Concierge?  Nope.  Just Westin.  That's how committed they are to health and well-being.  And that's why we are so thrilled to be partnering with them. As you know, we seek to partner with mission-driven companies who want to help us all live healthy and make an impact.  Westin is the perfect example of this. They are absolutely the hospitality industry's leader in well-being.  And, beyond the hospitality industry, they are helping to blaze a trail for how all companies should think about their commitment to health. I've gotten to know Chris over the years, seeing him at marathons all over the country. As you'll hear in this podcast, is the genuine article, very much woven into the running community. (Though he was visiting NYC from Boston, we were hardly running 10 minutes before he started seeing friends like Dr. Jordan Metzl and Mike Cassidy.) He also has a lot of great tips that we'll be sharing throughout the rest of the year. Here's one: The World's Greatest Stretch. Personally, I want to especially thank Chris– not just for recording this podcast with me, but for being instrumental in helping us forge this partnership with Westin.  Chris and I planted the seeds for this partnership over two years ago at a Rock N' Roll Marathon expo.  Thank you, Chris for helping to make it a reality! #LetsRise #EveryMileMatters Subscribe on iTunes / Subscribe on Stitcher / Subscribe on Google Play The post Chris Heuisler, Westin's Global Run Concierge: Let's Rise! appeared first on Charity Miles.
