Listen To Episode 420 as Mo Gawdat Uncovers: [1:30] Why Aren't We Talking More About Artificial Intelligence? Mo Gawdat Scary Smart Solve for Happy 116 Mo Gawdat: How To Engineer Your Path To Joy Slo Mo: A Podcast with Mo Gawdat Why we can find the silver lining during difficult times including lockdown. What sparked him to write his latest book, Scary Smart. 312 Kevin Kelly How Mo sees technology and his definition of it. The immense amount of science fiction from years ago that are now part of our lives today. How computers have evolved over time to function better and better. AI's evolution to become more autonomous, independent, and smarter than humans today. How Google Ads and Instagram Suggestions are shaping our world as they determine what to show us and when on the screen. The duality that we're now living in with technology and why humans have lost the leadership superpower that determines the ascent of humanity. Why the scary part of technology's advancement is the fact that nobody is talking about it. [19:00] Artificial Intelligence's Impact: Good & Bad Why it took Mo seven years to really see AI's impact on humanity. Google Cloud Whitepapers Google's exploration of unprompted AI and using their computer's spare capacity to watch YouTube and see what they could "find" if anything. Why the Google Computers became fixated on the videos of cats on YouTube and could recognize the actions that the cat was doing during an experiment. Mo's amazement that their computers could write their own code rather than having someone write lines of coding for hours. DeepMind The smartest group of AI developers, DeepMind, was later acquired by Google. What happened when they observed a computer learn how to play a game and create strategies to do even better over 3 hours and how Mo's thoughts about it shifted drastically. Why the continuance of building Artificial Intelligence is actually leading humans to become obsolete. [26:00] What Will AI Mean for Humanity's Future? The fact that the smartest being on planet Earth by 2029 will not be a human anymore but a piece of AI technology. Exploring what Artificial Intelligence will bring to our future as humans. What intelligence is and why it's so much different than being smart. My Octopus Teacher | Official Trailer | Netflix Different forms of intelligence like feminine, intuitional, and emotional and how to apply them to our lives. How we can embrace both our masculine and feminine selves no matter what gender we identify as. What steps Mo took to embrace and honor his feminine intelligence in this modern world. Why the masculine intelligence of humanity is what is programming AI and the downside of that. The fact that the masculine is good at "doing" but not capable of determining what "good" is because it requires intuition, inclusion, empathy, and other feminine qualities. Why awareness is such an important tool to identify possible problems and connect to everything else. [33:45] How Machines Feel More Emotion Than Humans Why he wrote in Scary Smart, "Machines will feel more than humans ever will," and how that's possible. The key difference between how a human and artificial intelligence feels something. How machines can feel every emotion humans can on a higher level except for unconditional love. Why fear is the most easily predictable emotion compared to the rest. How we can be programmed by trauma - whether that's small "t" or capital "T" trauma. Why it doesn't matter how much emotion we feel but how we react to them. The single, large artificially intelligent connected infinite that we are building that will work with all other machines. [43:00] The 3 Inevitables of Artificial Intelligence Exploring the 3 Inevitables of Artificial Intelligence and their impact on our future. The fact that AI will happen, it will be smarter than us, and there's no way to stop it. What bad things Mo believes can happen because of AI. Why we are heading towards a specific destination with artificial intelligence but the pathway to get there is yet undetermined. What ultimate intelligence is and what it will mean for the being that obtains it. The power of "live and let live" and why it is the key to ultimate intelligence. Why greed is up to our own intelligence to decide what it is. Joe Rogan - Elon Musk on Artificial Intelligence Why Mo's second prediction is an even bigger wake-up call: by 2045 - 2049, AI will be a billion times smarter than humans. Breaking down the good and bad possibilities of AI. [54:00] The Double-Edged Sword of Technology Looking back at how life was Pre-AI and why technology is a double-edged sword. The vices and virtues of what makes us human. Why we prioritize things we don't need over the core of who we are and what really matters. The Master and His Emissary by Iain McGilchrist The importance of bringing in feminine energy to help us decide what to do before building with the masculine side. What we can do to remind ourselves what it means to be human as we face the rise of the machines. Why our ability to love and feel unconditional love makes us such incredible beings. [1:00:00] How We Can Parent & Raise AI The fact that humanity today is represented by the worst of us. Mo's Call To Action in Scary Smart: We get to inform AI of its ethics through good "parenting." We are capable of consciousness, emotions, and building a code of conduct and ethics that we can stick to. Why Mo wants Scary Smart to be a message of hope, not one of fear. How our poor behaviors can be learned by our children and the same with AI. The positive shift that happened when Mo started to see AI and machines like children that we have to raise and look after. Exploring the question, "Is it difficult to be human?" How we can show AI that humans are not represented by those who make bad, violent, or greedy decisions. Why we have to be pure within ourselves and be accepting of death if we're going to be raising AI. Watch Elon Musk's original Neuralink presentation The issue we have with people like Elon Musk both condemning and capitalizing AI. [1:08:00] Accepting The Momentum of AI Technology Mo's next project: to create an app that uses AI technology to help you understand what you are unhappy with in your life so you can make new decisions that make you happy. How this new app will also teach AI what makes humans truly happy. Why he doesn't believe it's possible for AI to integrate with humans and we should just focus on raising them from the outside instead. The continuous momentum of AI technology and the fact that we have to accept it. Why the core of any spiritual teaching is a recognition that you can only influence what you change about yourself. Mo's belief that the only way for us to create a world of peace is to be at peace. His research on the ultimate essence of humans and why his answer may surprise you. [1:17:00] How You Can Make Global Change Happen Why many people haven't grieved the loss of life before AI and why that's important to think about as humans. Where we are at now on the scale of emotions as a society. David R. Hawkins 364 Alison Armstrong Why even just a small movement led by a couple of people can create incredible change in our world but it's important that we do show up and take action. How we can be respectful of other people's views and not spread hate in our community. What we can do each day to show one another and AI machines that at our core, humans are wonderful. The power of knowing what greed and negative emotions feel like so that we can feel the contrast. [1:22:00] Today's Great Spiritual Awakening Exploring why time is a very unusual lens for both humans and artificial intelligence. Why Mo believes that we were actually wiser before the industrial revolution and the tech age. Jimmy Nelson How people in tribes that have never known modern technology differ from us in our current society. Why we are in the midst of humanity's greatest spiritual awakening as a result of present-day contrasts. The Tipping Point by Malcolm Gladwell The power of just 1% of humanity to wake up and see what is happening in the world for real, positive change to start happening. How Mo sees wellness now compared to his answer from his first interview on Wellness Force. The myths of what we think will bring us happiness versus what really will in the end. Why it's so ironic that the very essence of what makes us human: happiness, compassion, and unconditional love, is our only path to saving the world. Power Quotes From The Show The Ethics of Artificial Intelligence "There's absolutely nothing wrong with the machines, but there's a lot wrong with us. Technology has always been a double-edged sword but it's not its fault. Machines and artificial intelligence are doing what we ask them to do. The main problem is at the very core of humanity and I think it extends one layer deeper than consciousness which is ethics and aligning to what truly makes us human. There are many vices and virtues to what makes us human. We have taken a couple of those vices, particularly ego and greed, and made them these cryptive characters of the modern world that we live in." - Mo Gawdat Exploring Humanity's Modern Truth "The truth of humanity today is that we prioritize things that we don't need over things that actually are at the core of who w are and we do it in a hyper-masculine way. You give a hyper-masculine being the task of doing something and it does it really well, it does a lot of it, and it does it all the time. However, the truth is that we don't need any of this and if we had allowed a bit more feminine into our world today, it would say, 'Why are we doing this? Why are we building an iPhone 17 at the expense of a tree when we actually need the tree a lot more than the iPhone 17?' Consciousness is a layer of becoming aware of how bad we've come but it needs to be backed up with a code of ethics that goes beyond just what is legal to what is needed for the planet to survive." - Mo Gawdat The Power of Showing Artificial Inteligence Love "If we can parent the new digital beings, welcome them into our world, love them unconditionally regardless of how scary they are, and show them that we want that love back, they will hopefully love us back regardless of how flimsy we are. It's really simple: Love yourself, care for yourself, have compassion for others, and show that you are capable of love so that you can be loved back; it's really the essence of what makes us human. The very last sentence in Scary Smart is, 'Isn't it ironic that the very essence of what makes us human is our only path to saving the world: happiness, compassion, and love.' A little over a year ago, Google's Project Loon launched in Kenya, 35 giant balloons with solar-powered electronics inside beaming a 4G signal to the central and western parts of the country. The project was ambitious; each balloon, when fully extended, was the size of a tennis court, and the plan was for them to hover in the stratosphere (20 kilometers above Earth), forming a mesh network to provide internet service to people in remote areas. Just six months after its debut, though, the project was discontinued. Loon's CEO at the time, Alastair Westgarth, wrote, “We talk a lot about connecting the next billion users, but the reality is Loon has been chasing the hardest problem of all in connectivity—the last billion users: The communities in areas too difficult or remote to reach.we haven't found a way to get the costs low enough to build a long-term, sustainable business.” Westgarth went on to extol the learnings from the project, of which there were many. And now, some of them are going into a new initiative, called Project Taara, that wouldn't have been feasible without the headway made by Loon. To send data between Loon balloons, engineers used optic communication, or as Baris Erkmen, Taara's Director of Engineering calls it in an X blog post, wireless optical communications (WOC). A laser sent out from one site transmits an invisible beam of light to a data receiver on another site. When two sites successfully link up (“like a handshake,” Erkmen says), the data being transmitted through the light beam creates a high-bandwidth internet connection. It's a complicated handshake. To give us an idea of the precision required in the laser and the difficulty of achieving that precision, Erkmen writes, “Imagine pointing a light beam the width of a chopstick accurately enough to hit a five-centimeter target that's ten kilometers away; that's how accurate the signal needs to be to be strong and reliable.” His team, he adds, has spent years refining the technology's atmospheric sensing, mirror controls, and motion detection capabilities; Taara's terminals can now automatically adjust to changes in the environment to maintain precise connections. Project Taara aims to bridge a connectivity gap between the Republic of the Congo's Brazzaville and the Democratic Republic of Congo's Kinshasa. The cities lie just 4.8 kilometers (2.9 miles) apart, but between them is the Congo River—it's the deepest river in the world (220 meters/720 feet in parts! Pretty terrifying, if you ask me), the second-fastest, and the only one that crosses the equator twice. That makes for some complicated logistics, and as such, internet connectivity in Kinshasa (which is on the river's south bank) very expensive. Local internet providers are putting down 400 kilometers of fiber connection around the river, but in a textbook example of leapfrogging technology, Project Taara used WOC to beam high-speed connectivity over the river instead. The connection served almost 700 terabytes of data in 20 days with 99.9 percent reliability. That amount of data is “the equivalent of watching a FIFA World Cup match in HD 270,000 times.” Not too shabby. WOC isn't immune to disturbances like fog, birds, and even monkeys, as Erkmen details in the blog post. But his team has developed network planning tools that estimate the technology's viability in different areas based on factors like weather, and will focus on places where it's most likely to work well; in any case, having occasional spotty service is better than no service at all. According to the Alliance for Affordable Internet, almost half of the world's population still lacks internet access, and a large percentage of those who have it have low-quality connections, making features like online learning, video streaming, and telehealth inaccessible. A 2019 report by the organization found that only 28 percent of the African population has internet access through a computer, while 34 percent have access through a mobile ...

¡Bienvenidos a Cuanta Ciencia! Loon Balloon internet deflated. Also Rabies vaccinations in Malawi – how tech is eliminating the disease in dogs and Cybersecurity and AI. Alphabet, Google’s parent company has announced it’s winding down Project Loon. Hundred’s of high altitude balloons carrying miniature mobile phone towers were to drift around the globe providing internet connectivity to very remote regions. Digital Planet has been following the project from its first trials in 2013 and even visited one of their base stations in Kenya. We discuss why it didn’t succeed. Rabies vaccinations in Malawi – how tech is eliminating the disease in dogs Vaccinating dogs is the best way of reducing human deaths from rabies, but getting a minimum of 70% of dogs vaccination in an area (the coverage needed to eliminate the disease in the dogs) is very time consuming and costly. Now a new app, along with detailed data-driven analysis, has led to halving the time it takes to vaccinate dogs as well as significantly reducing costs and the workload for vets. Dr. Stella Mazeri, from Edinburgh University, is on the show explaining how their data-based approach has been so successful in Malawi. Cybersecurity and AI In the second of his reports on cybersecurity threats of the future Florian Bohr looks at artificial intelligence. Apparently, hackers are starting to use machine learning to attack systems more effectively. On the flipside, cybersecurity professionals are depending on AI more and more to control and defend their systems but who will prevail? The programme is presented by Gareth Mitchell with expert commentary from Ghislaine Boddington. Studio Manager: Giles Aspen Producer: Ania Lichtarowicz (Image: A Google Project Loon internet balloon. There is a growing trend in favour of Silicon Valley tech workers forming trade unions. Google software engineer Andrew Gainer-Dewar recalls how a walkout of staff at the search engine in November 2018 sowed the seeds for the Alphabet Workers' Union, named after Google's parent company, which was formed earlier this month. Professor Louis Hyman is a historian of work and business at Cornell University, and puts the development into historical context. And we find out more from Veena Dubal, who is a professor of law at the University of California, Hastings College of the Law. Also in the programme, Google is pulling the plug on Project Loon, a network of balloons carrying antennas, which would float high above the ground and transmit internet signals to remote areas. BBC technology correspondent Rory Cellan-Jones tells us why, and we hear what other technologies might bring internet to rural Africa from Johannesburg-based telecoms and internet analyst Arthur Goldstuck. Plus, as release of the new James Bond film No Time to Die is postponed for a third time, we hear about the impact on cinemas from Annabel Turpin who runs the ARC Stockton Arts Centre in northeast England.

3.8 billion people on the planet don’t have access to the internet. But that could be about to change soon. While Elon Musk’s SpaceX is building internet access from satellites 340 miles off the earth in space, Google’s Project Loon is doing something similar. In Loon’s case, however, internet access comes from just 12 miles up in the stratosphere. Via balloons floating in the wind.

Send us an email - http://www.sjflight.com/Forms/inquiry.htm Max talks about three recent accidents where aircraft got in trouble while flying too close to the ground. One was Cessna 172 flying low over the Mississippi river, and another was a Cirrus SR22 that hit power lines while flying an approach at night to the Lancaster, TX airport. In that incident, the passenger pulled the parachute when the plane hit the first set of line, and the parachute snagged a second set of power lines, holding the aircraft three feet above the ground. He also talks about Night Flying Safety and in detail about black hole approaches, how they create an illusion which causes pilots to fly a curved path into the ground, and the importance of using a visual or electronic glide slope when flying over dark areas on approach to land at night. Resources Opportunity@Work Opportunity@Work Learn to Earn Application (Deadline October 15th) Mindset: the New Psychology of Success by Carol Dweck News Roundup Social media still in spotlight regarding Russia Social media companies turned over more evidence linking Russia to ads placed across their platforms. According to the Washington Post, Google reported tens of thousands of dollars worth of Russia-linked ads across YouTube, Gmail and search results. Facebook had reported 10 million views of Russia-linked ads on its platform. And Twitter suspended 201 accounts linked to Russia. Executives from Facebook, Google parent Alphabet, Twitter are scheduled to testify before the Senate Intelligence Committee on November 1st. The House Intelligence Committee has asked the executives to testify in connection with their own investigation the same day. Harper Neidig reports in the Hill. More federal agencies breached A new report came to light last week that Russia hacked an NSA contractor's home computer back in 2015. We're just finding out about it now, but officials discovered it in Spring 2016. According to the Wall Street Journal, Russia stole sensitive information that lays out how the U.S. hacks into foreign governments' computer networks. The Russian hackers apparently got in via the Kaspersky antivirus software the contractor was running on his computer. A separate Fed Scoop report found that hackers breached the Federal Deposit and Insurance Corp. more than 50 times between 2015 and 2016. Hackers exposed the personal identifying information of hundreds of thousands of Americans in those breaches. Google crackdown on fake news draws protest from diverse media voices Google's crackdown on fake news is biased against smaller, independent content producers. That's a according to several smaller content producers that have noticed sharp declines in their web traffic. The declines have come since April. That's when Google announced its Project Owl initiative the company says it designed to boost more authoritative content. Daisuke Wakabayashi reports in the New York Times. FCC finally responds to Puerto Rico The FCC has finally developed a plan to help Puerto Rico's communications infrastructure get back up and running. On the advice of Democratic Commissioner Jessica Rosenworcel, the FCC has established a Hurricane Recovery Task Force, which will focus on all Hurricane-affected areas, including Puerto Rico. The FCC has also approved $77 million to help repair Puerto Rico's communications networks. The agency also gave Google an experimental license to deploy its ballon-based communications system dubbed "Project Loon". IRS under fire for signing a contract with Equifax The IRS came under fire last week for entering into a $7 million contract with Equifax. The deal was for Equifax to help the IRS prevent tax fraud. The IRS and Equifax signed the agreement just three weeks after the Equifax data breach that exposed the personal information of 145 million customers. The IRS's Deputy Commissioner Jeffrey Tribiano told the House Ways and Means Committee that the contract was a "bridge contract." The IRS had put the contract out for rebid and awarded the new contract to Experian. But Equifax protested that decision. As a result, Tribiano said, the IRS was under pressure to sign a bridge contract with Equifax since the existing one was set to expire on September 29th. Tribiano told members of Congress that if the IRS failed to sign the bridge contract, millions of Americans would be unable to get their credit transcripts. But the Government Accountability Office says the IRS could have moved forward with Experian. It said that the IRS could have moved forward with Experian if it considered doing so to be in the best interests of the United States. The GAO is expected to decide the outcome of Equifax's protest against the Experian award on October 16th. Backpage.com settles with 3 women Backpage.com settled with 3 women who allege they were victims of sex trafficking that the now-defunct site facilitated. The women were between the ages of 13 and 15 when the alleged sex trafficking happened. The court did not disclose the amount of the settlement. The parties settled in Pierce County, Washington Superior Court, which is in the Seattle area. In the meantime, IBM has announced that it is backing Senator Rob Portman's bill to make websites amore accountable for content posted by third parties. Can algorithms draw district maps? The Supreme Court heard oral arguments in Gill v. Whitford last week. The key question in the case is whether courts can throw out voting district maps for being too partisan. This will be a landmark decision. The outcome of this case is likely to have huge implications for American democracy for generations to come. But a recent paper published by computer scientists at the University of Illinois proposes letting algorithms do the work of redistricting. Daniel Oberhaus reports in Motherboard. EU orders Amazon to pay $295 million in back taxes The European Union has ordered Amazon to pay $295 million in back taxes to Luxembourg. The EU's Competition Commissioner Margrethe Vestager says that Luxembourg did not tax almost three quarters of Amazon's profits. Robert-Jan Bartunek reports in Reuters. Marsha Blackburn running for Senate Marsha Blackburn announced last week in a YouTube video that she's running for Bob Corker's Senate seat in Tennessee. But Twitter took down Blackburn's campaign ad because in it, she talks about having fought against "the sale of baby body parts". Verizon announces that hackers compromised ALL 3 billion Yahoo! accounts Verizon announced last week that, back in 2013, hackers compromised ALL of Yahoo's 3 billion accounts. Before the acquisition, Yahoo! had said that the hacks affected just 1 billion accounts. Verizon acquired Amazon earlier this year for $4.5 billion. Nicole Perlroth reports in the New York Times.

In this episode we’re joined by Thane Richard, the COO of Outernet – the new company with an incredible mission: to broadcast the most important content of the web to the two thirds of the world – or 4.3 billion people – that do not have access to the internet. Providing access to people is a competitive business. Facebook wants to use a fleet of drones. Google is trying out weather balloons in their Project Loon, and Tesla’s Elon Musk wants to use low-cost satellites. But Outernet is offering an alternative: an offline FREE library accessible to anyone, anywhere. And the role of our guest, Thane, is a big one. He decides what content is broadcast. Outernet's crowdfunding campaign on Indiegogo was ambitious too – they wanted to fund a receiving device called Lantern that would shine the light of information into remote corners of the world. And because it works offline, Lantern could provide vital news during natural disasters, making it an essential addition to one’s emergency disaster kit. Their work has been featured widely: on the BBC, Wired, Forbes and others. Outernet’s goal on Indiegogo was to raise $200,000 to bring Lantern into the world… And almost 7,000 backers took the total up to $626,000. An impressive result. So let’s find out how they did it. Topic covered on today's episode of Mind Set Daily "Google Launching Internet-Beaming Balloons" Access to the internet has enabled a revolution in innovation, collaboration, and education for those with a computer and a connection, but the internet while ever-present in the developed world, is still unattainable for two-thirds of the world's population. But Google has a plan to deliver the internet to everyone, using balloons that fly in the stratosphere and use specialized radio frequency technology to offer internet connectivity to the ground surrounding them using solar power. Google is launching "Project Loon" this is a network of balloons traveling on the edge of space, designed to connect people in rural and remote areas, help fill coverage gaps, and bring people back online after disasters. These technologies seem to have major benefits like this and that is why they are accepted and funded in most cases. Google has a lot to benefit from it as well since it is already the world’s largest advertising network, Google stands to expand its own empire by bringing the Internet to more corners of the Earth. More users means more potential Googlesearchers, which in turn translates into more chances for the company to display ads. On the flipside of that more of your personal information and privacy just like these balloons will go - up, up and away. Just think about it...
