A business owner who voiced support for the Capitol Hill Occupied Protest, or CHOP, during its existence and barred armed officers from entering her stores after it ended is now suing the city and filed a tort claim against it for actively participating in CHOP and having the police abandon its local station. Molly Moon Neitzel operates a chain of Molly Moon's Ice Cream in Seattle. Her lawsuit filed against the city on June 7 in federal court seeking damages argues that its decision to abandon the East Precinct station during the 2020 riots and unwillingness to enforce the law during the occupation "subjected businesses, employees, and residents of that neighborhood to extensive property damage, public safety dangers, and an inability to use and access their properties." --- Support this podcast: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/washington-in-focus/support

6am hour -- Kirby Wilbur in for John Carlson... some key context to today's 1st hearing for Donald Trump regarding classified documents criminal charge, the questions about Trump recorded on audio alleging he boasted of classified documents, why "we've got to take a deep breath" about the charges against Trump, why Democrats want America talking about Trump (and not the other Republican presidential candidates), WA Republicans favor Ron DeSantis by clear margin (and Tim Scott's tied with Trump in WA), Seattle ice cream shop owners of Molly Moon's now being hypocritical after prior complaints about armed police officers on Capitol Hill, the Lynnwood women's spa legal ruling will force the owners to allow transgender women (i.e. biological men) to be patrons, spa owners/supporters are organizing a protest on Saturday after the adverse legal ruling. 7am hour -- Kirby Wilbur in for John Carlson: there are drag queen shows but why no drag king shows?, why minors deserve protection from sexually oriented content/influence, look at how European nations are handling under-age trans issues like banning puberty blockers, object lessons about Canada's health care and the BC cancer patients being sent to Bellingham area for medical treatment, two examples of why (politically) blue cities in America are really struggling: first up...Wash. DC, the 36th anniversary of Ronald Reagan's big risk with the "Mr. Gorbachov, tear down this wall" speech in Berlin. 8am hour -- the story of how Kirby first became a Seattle (conservative) talk show host, the relentless political pursuit to punish Donald Trump "hunted mercilessly" but this case (classified docs) might prove differently, how the classified document case differs from the case brought by NY DA Alvin Bragg, how the trial in Miami could prove to be key rather than a trial in Washington DC for Trump, next week is a very notable prediction made 5 years ago by teen climate activist Greta Thunberg (spoiler alert: her prediction will not come true), the reason why "reality is conservative".

How I got to Maine? Well, I always wanted to come back to the US because I had originally done another degree in the US in Atlanta at Emory. I wanted to be closer to home, but still wanted that rural feel. I had a friend who was originally from Maine and said, "Why not come here?" I researched it and looked at it, loved it, came up to Mount Desert Island. Even though we're separated by several degrees of temperature, it reminded me a lot of The Bahamas. The island, the people, the water. I felt at home, and that is how I came to Maine." Her journey to the US and Bar Harbor is one of perseverance and hard work. You've never met a more powerful pastry.    The buttery,  decadent (sometimes ugly delicious) goodies that come from the kitchen at The Pastry Project represent a fair opportunity for many to break into the pastry industry, and learn job skills that can propel them into a successful career.   That's the hope and mission that Heather Hodge and Emily Kim dreamed up and this social enterprise is nothing less than a phenomenal asset to our city's thriving food scene.    After leading social and kitchen staffing roles at Seattle's famed Molly Moon's Ice Cream Shop, these two saw barriers to entry and moved quickly to remedy with their own free 14 week training program.    The thoughtful insight in removing barriers for students - even beyond the immediate needs of a teaching classroom, exhibit the deep hearts of these women who care for the equity of human beings.   Through strong partnerships with local companies, new graduates can feel confident to pursue dreams in the industry and beginners can have an opportunity to learn thanks to referrals from contributing non-profits.   Our conversation occurred during the midday baking buzz, as you'll hear from their neighbor The London Plane.   It's about as authentic as it gets, and I love it.    Learn about Heather and Emily's admiration for each other and the real struggles they faced in their life's journey and Pastry Projects first year.   Emily also shares an intimate and personal process of a post she wrote regarding the recent tragedies in the AAPI community.   Her words prompted a thoughtful conversation in my own home regarding culture, discrimination, and our greater awareness to the pain and hate that has existed for so long.  This is a worthy listen. We're involved in safety issues and quality issues but also medical staff affairs, and also the development of the facility, all being different service lines as they can be further developed. “I have always thought that transparency in every aspect of life leads to the most honest and accountable relationships,” says Molly Moon Neitzel. In this episode she explains how “the secrecy around pay is extremely patriarchal and I think women and people of color have been oppressed and held down by secrecy around pay for centuries.”Molly comes by her activism as a result of working in progressive politics at the start of her career. Then she opened up her first ice cream shop to “embody all of my progressive values.” Eight shops later, and more on the way, “I still feel humbled by the success that Molly Moon's has had,” she says. She shares with host Amy Elisa Jackson how she introduced the idea of pay transparency to her staff, how they accepted it (some didn’t), and how it has become a motivation for advancement and retention within the company. She concedes that some CEOs might be skeptical of the value of pay transparency. She has this to say about that: “I would ask them what their turnover rate is and how much it costs them a year. I would ask them if they ever asked their employees how happy they are. I would ask them if their children worked for their company, if they would feel proud of the compensation package they were offering?”In addition to pay transparency, Molly has championed workers’ rights and parental leave.“I will have never done enough. I think it's our duty as human beings to help each other as much as we can, and I will never be able to say that I've done enough,” she says.IN PURSUIT is hosted by Amy Elisa Jackson and is an original podcast from Glassdoor.Click to listen now.
