0:00 ... Ross hello and welcome .... and introduces the panel 0:38 ... Episode #127 is dedicated to Devin Booker and Kevin Durant, who both averaged "27" points per game last season. 0:55 ... Bet OnLine live commercial read from Ross 1:36 ... We preview Tuesday night's opening games on TNT. 1:51 ... Bruce starts it off with a preview of Knicks vs Celtics, including some historical facts about their renewed rivalry. World B reminds Bruce that the Knicks actually won game 7 of that 1973 eastern finals on Boston's home court. World B also pointed out that the Knicks played more pre-season minutes together than any other starting five in the NBA. 6:14 ... Ross points out that Boston will have a target on its back like all champions. 6:53 ... Ross asks Bruce if he thinks Celtics coach Joe Mazzulla will use more players off the bench and Bruce feels that Luke Kornet and Xavier Tillman will give him good minutes at center in relief of Al Horford until Kristaps Porzingis returns from injury. 8:23 ... World B points out that NY is very thin up front with Precious Achiewa and Mitchell Robinson on the shelf to start the year. Ross is looking forward to seeing Mikal Bridges' and his new jump shooting form. 10:50 ... In the second game on opening night, the Lakers host the Timberwolves and World B feels Minnesota has a solid collection of players and that Julius Randle and Donte DiVincenzo make the Wolves formidible. 12:24 ... Bruce is looking forward to seeing how TNT handles its coverage in the final year of their contract. Will Charles Barkley and Shaq stir things up? As for the Lakers/Wolves matchup, will JJ Redick throw Bronny James out there against an elite team in his first NBA game? Ross feels that he'll get Bronny out there pretty quickly just to put it to bed. 14:46 ... Ross asks World B if he'd be shocked to see LA win the opener against a great Minnesota team. World B says Anthony Davis will shoot a lot more threes this season. 17:25 ... The Thunder vs Nuggets game on Thursday provides OKC with a chance to make a statement against the 2023 champs on Thursday night. Ross feels OKC is young and talented but World B thinks Christian Braun really needs to step up for Denver this season. 21:49 ... The Pacers vs Knicks on Friday will be another key first week matchup as they meet right away after having played each other in a 7 game playoff series last season. Bennedict Mathurin's return gives Indiana a huge boost. 24:21 ... Ross is excited for the Suns/Clippers matchup at the new Intuit Dome in LA. He also thinks James Harden may try to revert to his Houston days and become a volume scorer again. Coach Mike Budenholzer is expected to really help Phoenix become a solid defensive team to complement their great offensive players. 26:51 ... Ross tees up our segment on postseason awards predictions. We begin with the MVP race. Shai Gilgeous-Alexander and Luka Doncic are getting love from our crew. 29:57 ... All three guys have different choices for Rookie of the Year. Bruce likes Stephon Castle of the Spurs. World B likes Zach Edey of Memphis. Ross has the biggest eye opening choice in Tidjane Salaun of Charlotte. 33:50 ... Bruce considered Victor Wembanyama for two awards: Defensive Player of the year and Most Improved Player but he settled on Wemby as the top defensive player. All three panelists agreed. 36:18 ... The Coach of the year discussion centers on Ime Udoka of Houston and Jamahl Moseley of Orlando. 39:10 ... The Most Improved Player Award is a three-way race between Cade Cunningham, Wembanyama, and Jalen Williams. World B feels that this award has settled into a very predictable pattern with a good player who becomes a first-time All Star almost always winning the award in recent years. 42:29 .... Bruce predicts a Celtics/Thunder NBA Finals matchup with Boston winning and Jayson Tatum winning Finals MVP. World B feels the Timberwolves will win the west but that Boston will be the eventual champion while Ross is on the OKC bandwagon and believes they'll use draft capital to bolster their team and ultimately win it all. 49:38 ... Ross says goodbye and see you next week! TRT 50:06
Die Unmittelbarkeit des Saisonstarts fordert Awards – und wir geben natürlich nach. Beim MVP ist alles irgendwie eindeutig – und am Ende doch komplett in der Schwebe. Anders sieht es beim Defensive Player of the Year aus. Außerdem: Kommt der Rookie of the Year aus Memphis?
A season FULL of incredible individual performances! How do you even begin to figure out who deserves to be recognized for their play? Kevin “K-Dot” Lewis of The 9450 stops by to discuss the 2024 WNBA awards! Starting off with the rookies, Caitlin Clark figured things out quick, fast, and in a hurry. For her amazing rookie campaign, she earned Rookie of the Year honors. However, the race was much closer than the vote would have you believe. How close was Angel Reese to winning it, who else came on strong at the end, and did the voters get the All-Rookie Team selections right? Then, there was no question who was coming away with MVP this season. It was simply a matter of whether or not it would be unanimous, and it was! K-Dot puts A'ja Wilson's historic career into perspective. How in the hell was she able to level up after already being at the top of the league? Also, I tell you which player I was shocked to see not make it onto anybody's ballot. The Defensive Player of the Year Award is always one of the toughest for voters to decide. Kevin tells us why that is and his own personal criteria for making the pick. We also discuss the challenges of evaluating post defenders versus perimeter defenders, which may have led to DiJonai Carrington only receiving one vote. However, DiJonai did come away with the Most Improved Player Award. Which teammate of hers should have received some recognition as well? And who should or shouldn't be eligible to win this award? We finish up with the Coach of the Year Award along with an epic rant about the Chicago Sky's decision to fire Teresa Weatherspoon after one season. K-Dot also puts on his Nostra-Dot-mus hat and tells us what to expect from the rest of the playoffs! Tap in! Last season's Memphis Grizzlies announced their arrival by earning the 2nd seed in the Western Conference and with the fifth-youngest roster in the NBA and proven success building through the draft and player development, there's no reason to believe their upward trajectory should not continue into this season. To discuss how this up-and-coming team can continue to bolster their franchise's history, we've brought on special guest, Molly Morrison, formerly of MadeInMemphis1, the most followed Grizzlies' fan account in Memphis. She takes us through the growth that led to Ja Morant winning the Most Improved Player Award and Zach Kleiman winning Executive of the Year and where the team can go from here. 4:06-4:55: “Ja Morant obviously is just the pivotal reason as to why you're sitting here saying, ‘They're not even an up-and-coming team. They're kind of already there.' So much of that does have to do with Ja's ability to attack the basket, along of course with his other skill sets… and just all the areas he's willing and working to improve in. … Just some of the things he does, I truly believe that I am excited to watch every single Grizzlies game in the regular season, which is not something I could always say because there will be some sort of highlight that just doesn't look like something a natural person would do.” 11:24-11:57: “They've been shooting better on a higher volume, which is extremely hard to do… and the whole team has done that. That really goes back to what I mentioned earlier with coach Taylor Jenkins realizing, ‘OK, guys. Our defense is going to struggle. … We need to stop shooting as many midrange shots. We need to either attack the basket or shoot from deep.' And I think you've really seen that pay off with the Grizzlies.” 28:05-31:06: “Honestly, I think the best thing [GM Zach] Kleiman has done is not overthink it. … I feel like just his consistency to keep on drafting these guys that end up being able to produce at the NBA level so quickly is just really impressive. … The draft wasn't an exciting time for a very long time. … To shift the narrative into, we don't have to have a top 10 pick to get a really exciting guy. It's normal to be able to find a steal late first round or second round. It's a new world for Grizzlies fans, and I give him a ton of credit.” 36:11-36:53: “Taylor Jenkins has been a huge part of this team's success. I really think you mentioning him and Ja coming in at the same time, it's such an interesting way to look at it because these two guys have immense, immense respect for each other. … Above all else… I think a really underrated thing with coaches is having that relationship between the star piece… and the coach because you've seen that go wrong time and time when that respect isn't there.” Molly's column about how she grew her MadeinMemphis1 anonymous account into the most-followed fan account in Memphis, and why she stepped away. It's Race to Ten Tuesday and Brother Bri gives his reasons for going with the Celtics (+150). Then Cousin Sal and the Degenerate Trifecta give their best bets for the NBA playoffs as Sal and Harry are split over Denver/Portland and Parlay Kid likes Lillard over 4.5 three pointers. Then they talk Lakers/Suns as Parlay Kid takes DeAndre Ayton over 14.5 points and then they discuss Mavericks/Clippers(20:45). With only 8 teams remaining in the NHL playoffs the guys give their best bets for who they like to win the Cup, as Harry says Why Not Winnipeg? – and Mikey Meatballs agrees (36:30)! There's odds on Kansas City (27-1) and Tampa Bay (50-1) going undefeated in the regular season and the guys explain why they don't think it will happen (46:00). Then Jerry Ferrara joins to discuss the Knicks/Hawks series and responding to too many people on Twitter. On this week's edition of The Palace of Pistons Podcast, Mike Anguilano and Aaron Johnson tap in to talk about the recent comments from Troy Weaver predicting minimal roster movement for the Pistons this offseason. They also get into the breaking news of Julius Randle winning the NBA's Most Improved Player Award, while Piston forward Jerami Grant took second place in the voting. On this episode the podcast discusses Russell Westbrook's record for Triple doubles. Is Westbrook one of the best players to never win a championship? We then dive into the possible play-in tournament matchups and our favorites out of the 4 teams. As the Lakers gear up for the playoffs, do you still view Anthony Davis as a Top 10 player in the NBA? The pod debates that topic, as well as give our picks for the Most Improved Player Award.
Of all the surprising stories during this NBA season, perhaps the most unexpected is the return to relevance of the New York Knickerbockers. MSG Network and ESPN Radio's Alan Hahn joined our Aaron Berlin and Otto Strong to tell us how the Knicks, after years of mediocrity (or worse), are not only playing their best basketball in years, but might also be well set up for years to come. Hahn brings some insight on how Head Coach Tom Thibodeau, while still pushing his typically tough and physical style of basketball, has adapted and mellowed a bit in relating to his players. This style has rubbed off well on his team's star Julius Randle, who has had a career year and seems likely headed to the Most Improved Player Award. Hahn also gives us a sense on the importance this turnaround has been for New York in the wake of what's going on across town with the Brooklyn Nets, while also demonstrating what the energy inside Madison Square Garden will be like once fans are allowed to return in full capacity. Otto and Aaron also show some appreciation for a couple of league superstars who surpassed big milestones last week -- Russell Westbrook and Carmelo Anthony.

Jason Goff, K.C. Johnson, and Rob Schaefer discuss the new-look Bulls, their first win post-trade deadline, and what seems to be working for them. But with all the excitement and curiosity with the new roster, a big question remains as the Bulls seem to find their way through different rotations: Where does Lauri Markkanen fit? The guys discuss whether or not this is the farewell tour for Markkanen and why it hasn't worked for Lauri in Chicago. On this episode of Celtics PRIDE, Adam Motenko, Josh Motenko and Mike Minkoff touch on all the reasons we could be concerned but aren’t - from the Celtics’ inability to keep from scoring on their own basket, to Jeff Teague’s inability to hit his floater, to Pritchard being out and now Marcus Smart’s recent injury. Then they share thoughts on Kemba’s poor play after his leader-like comments in the media about Jaylen Brown and Jayson Tatum not needing to change anything about how they’re playing - because it should be Kemba who makes the adjustment. Mike and Josh squash the Aaron Nesmith debate with a bet: on whether Nesmith will shoot over 38% at any point throughout his rookie contract - and they dig up a similar bet made in 2019 for Carsen Edwards. Hopefully now, they can let the on-court play do the talking. The Celtics PRIDE crew shoots down the JJ Redick trade rumors as both something that seems unlikely to happen and unlikely to bolster the Boston lineup much given Redick’s severely declining mobility and recent play. Coach Josh then highlights a couple Jayson Tatum plays from the Spurs and Lakers that exemplify both Tatum’s greatness and his struggles with details that remind fans of his play that ended last year’s playoffs. Josh argues Tatum reducing these detail-mistakes is the number one theme to watch for the rest of the year. “Tatum’s maturity is the fulcrum that everything is balancing on, and we will win a championship once we see this maturity. That is the bulls-eye for this team and this season… ...It’s good that we lost to the Lakers and are thus going to be even hungrier when we see them again” - Josh Motenko They give Rob WIlliams some love before emphasizing that after all the work Jaylen Brown did to get out the vote prior to the last election, we as fans need to repay the favor by voting him into the all-star game. After taking a team-friendly deal, helping Brown get his 1.3 million all-star bonus from is the least we can do as fans to directly help him out - since fan voting accounts for 50% of the All Star voting. Now the only question is, could Jaylen win the Most Improved Player Award this year? Jaydee, Mo, Ovie and BJ kick off this week by showing some love to Brandon Ingram after picking up the Most Improved Player Award (01:42), then talk of the inspirational John Thompson after he sadly passed away earlier this week. (05:22)In Hot Or Not, Ovie feels Marcus Morris Sr shouldn't have been ejected for his foul on Luka Doncic (10:38), the guys hail Jamal Murray as a genuine star (19:33), then lastly there's a wild debate on whether CP3 is in the top three point guards in the league – there are some interesting shouts! (26:50)In Off The Court Yani looks at how effective Khris Middleton is in his number two role at the Bucks, then Mo calls him out for his lack of consistency. (40:51)Finally in the Primetime Preview, Ovie is backing Miami to make the Eastern Finals, but BJ believes the Bucks will figure it out and progress. (51:18)
Daniel Sallerson & Jim Eichenhofer chat with the voice of the Pelicans, Joel Meyers about Jaxson Hayes’ and Nickeil Alexander-Walker’s rookie seasons plus Brandon Ingram winning Most Improved Player Award.
Brandon Ingram wins the NBA’s Most Improved Player Award and Bam Adebayo finishes 2nd. Heat/Bucks (1-0 MIA) George Hill to start in place of Eric Bledsoe. Possessions that can hurt the Heat are ones where the Bucks get the ball to Giannis on one side then there’s quick ball movement to the weak side. Rim protection and Bucks’ IQ on defense presents some problems that need adjustments from Miami. First 6 min of the 2nd Q hurt the Bucks when they kept turning the ball over and Miami closed the gap. The Heat's initial defense is so great. Where they have been able to take away scoring opportunities from the Bucks is stopping penetration and limiting paint touches. They are walling off Giannis in transition so well. I love watching Bam Adebayo. The possibilities are almost endless when he has the ball. Sees passing angles that only Nikola Jokic sees among current centers. I have a feeling in year 5 or 6, he's going to have that range extended to the arc too. Every time when Middleton got into isolation then the Heat would guard it in the same essence of TJ Warren as they try to turn him into a passer. This Goran Dragic bubble/playoff run has been something else. He has been a completely different player in the bubble compared to the rest of the season. The big shots hit down the stretch are why you go get a guy like Jimmy Butler. One thing that left me thinking for Milwaukee is when Miami went to the lineup of Crowder/Butler/Bam with Herro/Dragic that they aren’t constantly putting those two guards in multiple actions. Tonight was the least amount of threes (12) Miami has hit vs. Milwaukee all year and they won. Another interesting stat from this game is the 28 isolation possessions from Milwaukee which the second highest this season. I understand that Bledsoe was our, but some of the lineups inserted by Budenholzer were downright awful. Thunder/Rockets (3-3 TIE) Where I think the Rockets do well on defense is activity that is great but smart. Dort has lost all respect on the offensive side of the floor and has become a liability for this team when he’s on the floor because he’s only contributing on defense and with rebounding. OKC tried to go with Ferguson, but he was not any good either. It’s time for him to walk once his contract is up. Where the Thunder’s offense has struggled is making the Rockets’ defense move as they are easily switching a lot of the actions ran. Westbrook’s passing has been off as he tries to regain his rhythm on the floor and this has led to a few too many turnovers. Chris Pail has made it known that he is not ready to go home yet with his performance in the 3Q as he got into his back of tricks outside of the pull up game. Schroeder has not had a good offensive game, but his defense has been great. When Houston is moving the ball the crispness PF some of these possession then it is a thing of beauty and very hard to guard. The ball and player movement in this game from Oklahoma City has been much better than in previous games. On top of that, they have hit perimeter shots to open the floor. CP3/Schroeder/SGA have made the most of isolation possessions. This has been their bread & butter to penetrate and force rotation. PJ Tucker has helped negate some of this with his ability to help. Darius Bazley has made a few big plays in this 4th quarter. James Harden is commanding OKC’s full attention as they are placing focus on loading the his side of the floor. Everything been ran through CP3 as he looks to hunt mismatches. Where OKC fails far too often is in transition and it almost hurt them late. Thunder ice the game at the free throw line after a couple of Westbrook errors. The Counter Narrative: Changing the Way We Talk (and think) About Education
In this episode, I chat with Jeffrey Millner, the assistant principal of Thomas Dell High School in Virginia. He has served as an educator for 22 years as both a teacher for exceptional students and as an administrator in both rural and urban settings. A lover of sports, Jeffrey coached softball and baseball and even received the Most Improved Player Award while playing 1st base at St. Paul's College in Lawrenceville, VA. He has also participated in several 5K & 10K marathons. Jeff enjoys reading and spending time with his son. We chat about how he uses job shadow days at his school as a means to wrap his arms around the community. Providing students with an opportunity to investigate potential jobs can help save time and thus money in schools which help parents already struggling financially. We also discuss the power of student voices in helping to drive the “why” behind our initiatives. Once students get it, allow them to work with other students. Enjoy. Matt Langel, Helping Players Find Success Guest: Matt Langel, Colgate University Basketball Head Coach In this week’s basketball coaching conversation, Matt Langel, coach of Colgate University's men's basketball team, joins The Basketball Podcast to discuss methods of helping players to find success. Decision-making, shot selection, player development, and teaching players how to play are all covered. Langel has been running the Raiders' program since 2011, and set a record in 2019 in wins (24), wins in the Patriot League (13), and home wins (15) at Cotterell Court in Hamilton, New York. The result was Colgate's first Patriot League title since 1996. His success resulted in a contract extension until 2026-27. Prior to Colgate, Langel spent five seasons as an assistant coach at Temple University (2006-11), working for head coach Fran Dunphy; he also worked for Dunphy from 2004-06, when Dunphy coached Penn—Langel's alma mater. The just-retired Dunphy (from Temple) still means a lot to Langel. “There hasn’t been any important decision that I haven’t consulted him on, or thought deeply about what he would do,’’ Langel told the Philadelphia Inquirer after the Raiders won the Patriot League title. Originally from Moorestown, N.J., Langel spent four seasons playing for the Quakers (1996-2000), and was honored as the Ivy League and Big Five Player of the Week numerous times and received the Big Five's Most Improved Player Award. Langel finished his career in red and blue with 1,191 points. Atlantic City of the USBL drafted Langel in 2000, and he went to camps for the NBA's Seattle SuperSonics and the Philadelphia 76ers. His pro career took place in Europe: Chene BC in Switzerland; ALM Evreux Basket in France Pro A; MBC and Hagan in German Bundesliga I; Eiffel Towers in Holland.
