Sheila Dillon heads out on the highway to investigate the world of food at motorway service stations. Historically they have been a place viewed as a functional stop-off for a "tea and a pee" and often maligned for the quality of their food. Motorway services enthusiast Dr David Lawrence from Kingston University talks through a short history of the Great British service station from Watford Gap and Newport Pagnell in 1959 through to present day.AA President Edmund King briefs Sheila on how his membership views motorway service food and Robin Markwell reports on the opinions of lorry drivers from Chippenham Pit Stop on the M4 in Wiltshire where more healthy eating options are now appearing on the menu. Dan Sutton from Roadchef - one of the largest motorway service operators - also gives his thoughts on what the British motorist is looking for when wanting to be fed on the motorway and argues that familiarity of brands is key.Sheila takes a trip to Tebay Services on the M6 in Cumbria to understand a different way of providing motorway service food. She meets the Dunnings family who have since opened services at Gloucester, Cairns Lodge in Lanarkshire and will soon open another at Tatton in Cheshire. Their ethos includes an emphasis on locally sourced, homecooked food. Sheila meets with their coffee and bread suppliers as well as touring their farm to understand how service areas might also be an engine for the local economy.Produced by Robin Markwell in Bristol for BBC Audio.

I had the joy of using State Highway 1, south of Christchurch, over the weekend. Which is a bit of a goat track. And it's why there is a bit of excitement about the government announcing that it wants to look into making it a four-lane highway. At least between Christchurch and Timaru. Which, to many people, is a no-brainer. This is part of a wider study the government wants done into transport links between the ports at Lyttelton and Timaru. As well as a better highway, replacing the bridge at Rakaia and the role rail plays in freight movement will also be looked at. Which is only happening because it's election year. So that, when the National, Act and NZ First leaders turn up during the campaign and people start asking them about State Highway 1, they can say they're doing this study and kick it to touch until the 2029 election. But a four-lane highway - at least between Christchurch and Ashburton - is something that's been talked about for years. Which I've always thought is a no-brainer. But - after driving down south and back up again at the weekend - I've been thinking, would it actually be worth it? Is it really a priority? And what other government funding we might miss out on? Not that we're like a pig in muck when it comes to road funding. In the most recent round of government funding for roads, just 6 percent went to the South Island. Which, as I said at the time, was nothing short of pitiful. I wasn't alone. Leeann Watson from Business Canterbury said, considering the South Island's contribution to the national economy, the amount we get back in road funding is definitely out of whack. In terms of the government's upcoming study also including the potential replacement of the bridge at Rakaia, we've had construction consultant Mike Blackburn saying that needs to happen. Sooner rather than later. Mike says it's urgent because of the number of people moving south, buying houses in places like Ashburton and commuting into Selwyn or even into Christchurch. And that's where I'm landing, too. I reckon we need to face up to the fact that we're never going to have four lanes on State Highway 1, south of Christchurch. And I think we need to focus our attention on getting something done about the bridges at places like Rakaia. Not that I no longer think a four-lane highway would be brilliant. And not that I no longer think we're being ripped off not having one. But the reality is, it will never happen. New bridges, though, are a much easier sell when it comes to government funding. Because if a bridge packs a sad, you're shot. Yes, there are always alternative routes. But, especially when it comes to freight movement, the bridges between Christchurch and Timaru are much more of an issue than the two-lane highway. In this episode, Liz and Sonia dive into one of the most common (and secretly funniest) learner‑driver habits: leaving the braking just a bit too late. Between the two of them, they've seen every version — the hopeful “I think I've got this”, the silent internal panic, and the classic wide‑eyed “oh no oh no oh no” moment as the car ahead gets closer… and closer. Expect plenty of laughs, real stories from the instructor's seat, and practical tips to help learners (and supervising drivers) understand why late braking happens and how to fix it without drama. If you've ever clutched the door handle, stomped an imaginary brake pedal, or watched a coffee cup take flight, this one's for you. What happens when a former professional footballer and football agent walks into the motor trade… and decides to build a dealership with "more care, more style, and a lot less ego"? In this episode, I'm joined by Josh Apps, founder of V12 Automobil in Central London. Josh didn't grow up in the trade. He's built V12 from scratch since 2022, and he's straight-talking about what actually works when you're buying and selling everything from a £20k GLC to a £1m+ hypercar.  We get into the real mechanics of his business, like underwriting stock, consignment done properly, why some dealers go bust with SOR, what he's seeing on Carwow and Motorway, and how he thinks about margin, risk, and stock turn in a market where plenty of people are trying to make £5k the easy way instead of £9k the stressful way.  Episode highlights: The mindset shift from football + agency life into running a dealership, and what skills actually transfer. Josh's take on consignment/SOR: why it can work, why it often blows up, and the process that stops you "playing with other people's money". How he sources stock day-to-day (dealers, auctions, Carwow/Motorway, LinkedIn, banks) and why access to stock is both easier and messier now. The uncomfortable truth about online buying platforms: inflated offers, knock-backs, cars reappearing, and how it creates friction for customers and dealers. A proper "car dealer war story": the Range Rover that turned into an engine rebuild, a transport job, and a stress test in customer service. The simple but rare philosophy that's kept his reviews and referrals strong: do the right thing even when it costs.   Finding this useful? Follow the show About Symco Training: Symco Training was founded in 2000 by Simon Bowkett and it was his belief that the business had to offer its clients something different. That difference was clear to Simon from his days in the dealership when he experienced many sales trainers who had all the answers, but were unable, unwilling or both to actually show the delegate how they could be implemented. It remains the ethos of the business today. You see, Symco only employ trainers that are committed to delivering not only in spiring and insightful training, but are equally as happy to demonstrate these skills and techniques with real customers in your own showroom. We believe in order for sales training to be effective and in Simon's words 'real world', it needs to be tried and tested in the only place it matters the showroom floor. There is no room for theory when your goals are for your team to sell more cars, hours or parts and retain more profit. In dealerships around the world the focus applied by many of the sales executives is to try and sell a deal. Symco specialise in getting your teams to focus on selling themselves, the product and then supporting this with the deal. To find out more visit: www.symcotraining.co.uk

Two places caught between moments in time.Join Producer Dom as he unpacks these eerie listener experiences and asks the question we always come back to: are some places simply replaying the past… or is something still trying to reach the living?Got a story you can't explain?Email it to the team (paranormalactivitypod@gmail.com) and you might feature in a future Monday Mailtime.A Create Podcast Hosted on Acast. Panic On The Motorway: Driving Through Anxiety

Right, picture this. It's 2:30am. I've been bounced off half of Sydney's motorways on the way back from Albury-Wodonga, the NSW/VIC border, and I'm talking myself through a full-blown panic attack because, well, everyone else is asleep. ZzzzToday started as a quick meet and greet and hit top gear — strapping freight, riding in an Kenworth and remembering why I love the transport industry so much. I'm trying to build something that brings trucking and mental health together… and for most of the day, I felt real purpose and inspired. Then, I hit Sydney. First, the M7 shuts. No biggie, I keep on truckin'.Then, NorthConnex shuts. Just my luck. Roadworks everywhere. Detours through the back roads of the big smoke. Sleep? Not likely tonight.  Now I'm picturing myself fronting up to an 8:30am meeting at the University, then a filmed interview I've been looking forward to all week, and an advisory group meeting (yep, big day) running on fumes — and the inner critic is LOUD. The anxiety is like THUNDER. Here comes the wave of dread. I just need to get back to Newcastle. Perfection or nothing.Don't stumble. You can't afford it. The stakes are too high  So I go back to basics: name what I can see, breathe longer out than in, loosen the grip, label the task instead of the monster. The goal isn't to get rid of fear at 3am — it's to keep pointing northwards while it's yelling at you.By the time I get home, the panic's still there… but it's smaller. And it's not driving anymore. Thank God, neither am I. Now to sleep, I've got a big day coming up! -- Follow The Dysregulated Podcast: Instagram – @elliot.t.waters Facebook – The Dysregulated Podcast YouTube – The Dysregulated Podcast (Official Channel) Created by Elliot Waters — Inspired by lived experience. Empty cannisters of nitrous oxide or 'nangs' discarded by Auckland motorway on and off ramps is concerning one south Auckland councillor, who suspects people are huffing and driving. There's growing calls for tighter regulation around Nitrous Oxide, a colourless gas, which is used as a painkiller in medical and dental procedures and also in catering to whip cream. But when inhaled for recreational use, it can have dangerous long-term side effects like nerve damage in the brain and spinal cord. Manurewa-Papakura Ward Councillor Matt Winiata spoke to Lisa Owen.

Sam & Tom head to where it all began for the British motorway service station: Watford Gap. Not only the official north–south divide, but the birthplace of what has grown to become a staple of travel culture in Great Britain — none more so than in our world of planning stops at service stations on the road to and from the links. This is an episode we've wanted to do for some time. And while the connection with golf is extremely tenuous, it's fascinating to explore the evolution of the motorway service network — from the early days of the M1, through how service stations have changed over time, and what the future might hold.Of course, we talk about some of our favourites, but now you can rank your own as well. In this week's episode of High on Home Grown, we're covering a mix of bizarre stories, serious research, and big political signals from around the world: Macky starts with a story that's raised more than a few eyebrows, a middle-class couple caught running a highly organised grow, claiming it was all to fund their daughter's university education. A case that sparks debate about motive, punishment, and how society views these crimes. Billy brings one of the strangest grow stories we've seen in a while, after plants were discovered growing underneath the M1 motorway in Northamptonshire. A reminder that people will grow just about anywhere… even under Britain's busiest roads. Dr. Margaret shifts gears to New Zealand, where the government is looking to cut red tape in an effort to boost its domestic hemp industry. A potentially big move for farmers and manufacturers if it plays out as planned. John covers new research suggesting that legal access is linked to reduced suicide rates among older adults — a serious and important finding that adds weight to ongoing reform debates. And finally, we look at growing signals from the US as Trump prepares to reschedule cannabis to Schedule III, a move that could reshape research, medicine, and the wider industry almost overnight. Another packed episode full of strange locations, policy shifts, and research that keeps the conversation moving forward.
