Although some towns are feeling the pinch after the opening of motorways that bypass their towns, not all are struggling. More than 22,500 vehicles used to pass through Warkworth every day, but since the opening of the Ara Tūhono section of State Highway 1, businesses have reported a drop in business. However, Ōtaki has been thriving since the opening of the Peka Peka to Ōtaki Expressway in 2022. Ōtaki Business Association Member and Owner of Black and Co Quality Leather NZ Leon Kingi told Kerre Woodham that it's opened the town back up to locals. He says that since they no longer have to avoid the traffic, more people are coming into town deliberately to shop and enjoy the local businesses. RACQ's 2024 Travel Speeds Report has revealed that Brisbane roads are getting slower at a concerning rate with peak hour continuing to expand. RACQ’s Head of Public Policy Dr Michael Kane told Peter Fegan on 4BC Breakfast, "This is what we see every year, but what we're seeing is it's getting worse." "We can build our way through that problem in terms of motorways, but these major roads running through the urban area, we can't keep widening these." Attention is turning to just how a truck managed to crash through a wire median barrier on Auckland's Southern motorway, killing three, on Monday. Dr Douglas Wilson is the director of the Transportation Research Centre at Auckland University spoke to Ingrid Hipkiss.

Auckland's southern motorway between Bombay and Ramarama re-opened after Waka Kotahi worked through the night to put in place a temporary wire rope barrier. Waka Kotahi's Auckland System's Manager Paul Geck spoke to Corin Dann.
