2024 marked the 40th anniversary of MuchMusic – which, for our non-Canadian listeners, was essentially Canada’s version of MTV. And while MTV had a profound impact on the music industry, MuchMusic arguably had a massive impact on Canadian culture. So, we’re going to spend a bit of time talking about MuchMusic – and since Christopher is the original Much veejay, it’s kind of a no brainer. In fact, most of Tom’s “in-depth” research for this episode came from Christopher’s excellent book, “Is This Live: Inside The Wild Early Years of MuchMusic, The Nation’s Music Station”. So in other words, Christopher did ALL of the heavy lifting for this episode! To help us tell the Much story is one of our favourite people – and a MuchMusic veejay from the early years – Laurie Brown! Laurie explains about the freedom accorded to her and the other veejays in creating compelling content (while staying within the confines of a miniscule budget) and the camaraderie of the Much family. Other highlights: - Laurie talks about interviewing music legends like David Bowie - Christopher tells a story about an unknown big-haired band that made their first Canadian TV appearance on his show City Limits. That band was Bon Jovi. - Audio from Duran Duran, who couldn’t believe their luck as they flew to exotic locations to film the videos for the Rio album. - We’ll talk to one British band that looked back on some of the early videos… and cringed! - Laurie and Christopher discuss dealing with the absolute mayhem of the legendary and chaotic “Intimate & Interactive” interviews. - Peter Gabriel and David Bowie, who themselves released game-changing videos, discuss the promise of music videos as an art form. - Former MUCH veejay Bill Welychka talks about the responsibility and pressure of interviewing major artists – especially to the fans of those artists. - Christopher & Laurie explain why they had to stop playing the most popular video on the station. - We discuss how MUCH provided the connective tissue between Canadians, their culture, and the musicians that benefitted from exposure on MuchMusic. All in all, it’s a MUCH-needed deep dive into the early days of The Nation’s Music Station! Famous Lost Words, hosted by Christopher Ward and Tom Jokic, is heard in more than 100 countries worldwide and on radio stations across Canada, including Newstalk 1010 Toronto, CJAD 800 Montreal, 580 CFRA Ottawa, AM 800 CKLW Windsor, 610 CKTB St Catharines, CFAX Victoria, AM1150 Kelowna and 91x in Belleville. It is in the Top 20% of worldwide podcasts based on the number of listeners in the first week.

In 1981, Rita Marley's brother Leroy Anderson aka Lepke launched the Dread Broadcasting Corporation (DBC), Europe's first dedicated black music station. Frustrated by the lack of airtime for reggae music in the UK, Lepke setup a mast in his back garden and began to broadcast to a small area of West London every Sunday afternoon. DBC soon expanded to cover all styles of black music and with its unmistakable logo featuring a dread with headphones and a spliff became a trailblazer for the future of black British radio in the UK. Neil Meads speaks to former DBC station manager Michael Williams about the early days of the station, and DJ Carmella Jervier explains how inspiring it was to finally hear black female DJs on the radio. "Is This Live? Inside the Wild Early Years of MuchMusic: The Nation's Music Station" by Christopher Ward. Order your copy today by clicking on the book cover above! What I don’t know about the Canadian music video scene could fill a half an hour or more… as rock ‘n’ roll historian Christopher Ward is about to discover. Ward has published a charming new oral history of MuchMusic—a Canadian take on MTV for my clueless fellow Americans. The book—Is This Live? Inside the Wild Early Years of MuchMusic, The Nation’s Music Station—takes us behind-the-scenes at the creation of the video music network where the only rule was, “You can do anything you want on air, just don’t spend any money.” CHRISTOPHER WARD podcast excerpt: "Being live at MuchMusic was like improv comedy. People love to see you fail and figure out how you're going to get out of it." Canadian music stars of the 1980s who blew up around the world—thanks in no small part to MuchMusic—included Bryan Adams, Corey Hart and Loverboy. And it also made mostly local guitar heroes out of Platinum Blonde, Gowan, the Spoons and Glass Tiger. Unless you’re a native of the Great White North, you’re probably wondering what Ward’s connection to all this might be, right? Well, he was Canada’s first VJ, or video disc jockey. But unlike their American counterparts who precorded all of their patter between music videos, Ward and his cohorts worked live. Ward got his start as an entertainer as a member of Second City Touring Company, where he became friends with future SNL comedian Mike Myers and was Myers’ sidekick on the original “Wayne’s World” before Dana Carvey brought life to Garth. He has also written songs for Diana Ross, Wynona Judd, The Backstreet Boys and Alannah Myles, for whom he wrote the #1 hit, “Black Velvet.” CHRISTOPHER WARD podcast excerpt: "Mike Myers calls me the 'entertainment survivalist' because we would go on the road together and I was prepared. I would bring a sandwich and I would have cold beer stashed in the van. I was ready to cope. I took pity on him and brought extra sandwich, extra beer, and a splitter for the headphones. And we both loved The Clash." From the first Canadian VJ (and Trent alumnus) Christopher Ward, Is This Live? captures the pure fun and rock ’n’ roll rebellion of the early years of MuchMusic television. Christopher Ward joins us by Skype to talk about his latest book. We talked to Ward last year in a wide ranging interview about his career as an award-winning songwriter, music journalist, and author. You can find that podcast here. But when we heard that he was working on a book about the early days of MuchMusic, we made him promise that he'd come back to talk to us about it.  He graciously agreed. From Penguin Random House:On August 31, 1984, the Nation’s Music Station launched, breaking ground as the Wild (Canadian) West of television—live, gloriously unpredictable, seat-of-the-pants TV, delivered fresh daily. The dream child of TV visionary Moses Znaimer, and John Martin, the maverick creator of The New Music, Much was live and largely improvised, and an entire generation of Canadians grew up watching the VJs and embraced the new music that became the video soundtrack of our lives. The careers of Canadian legends like Blue Rodeo, Corey Hart, Jane Siberry, Bryan Adams, Platinum Blonde, Glass Tiger, Colin James, the Parachute Club, Honeymoon Suite, Barenaked Ladies, Maestro Fresh Wes and Sloan were launched when Much brought them closer to their fans. Much also gave us international acts (Duran, Duran, Tina Turner, Iggy Pop, David Bowie, Madonna, Motorhead, Guns N’ Roses, Nirvana, Red Hot Chili Peppers), and covered the second wave of music activism with events like Live Aid and the Amnesty International Human Rights Now! tour. Ranging from Toronto’s iconic studio at 299 Queen Street West, to Vancouver’s MuchWest, MuchMusic’s programming travelled across Canada and connected the Canadian music scenes in an unprecedented way. With stories of the bands, the music, the videos, the specialty shows, the style and the improvisational approach to daily broadcast life at Much, Is This Live? is told by the people who were there—the colourful cast of on-air VJs, the artists who found their way into our living rooms of the nation as never before, and the people behind the cameras. As our tour guide to the first decade at MuchMusic Christopher Ward delivers a full-on dose of pop culture nostalgia from the 1980s and ’90s, when the music scene in Canada changed forever.

Christopher Ward was one of the first Much Music VJ's. His new book is called Is This Live? Inside the Wild Early Years of Much Music: The Nation's Music Station. There's a lot we forgot or don't know about the station's early years. Partly because not everyone had the channel for the first few years; it was not apart of the basic cable package until 1987. That led to some lean years budget wise. And this is where the genius of programming head John Martin came in: He hired creative types who knew how to fill a blank canvas. Enter Christopher Ward. You can learn a lot from the past. Being challenged by a budget can always be overcome by hiring creative people who can fill the space. Other things I learned: The first female VJ was Catherine McClanahan, (not Erica Ehm) that I once wrote to MuchMusic and complained, and how often Christopher's friend Mike Meyers would appear on the station. Christopher left for reasons that were all too obvious; writing and producing Alannah Myles' number one song in 1989, "Black Velvet". He told me about the joys of having a number one song on his resume.

Over the last year, Harmonia reached the ears of listeners in Boston via WGBH. And while Harmonia is not initially part of the new 99.5 All Classical schedule, we hope that, as the dust settles during this transition, Harmonia may be re-added in the near future.

Download MP3 *** Script *** M: Hey, Ayu, what song are you listening to? W: I'm sorry? (taking off her ear phones) Oh, this? It's "Elegy" by Hirai Ken. M: Do you like Hirai Ken? W: You bet! I like him a lot! I'll even go to his concert at Hiroshima's Green Arena next Sunday. Do you like him? M: Sort of. It's not that I don't like him, it's just that I don't quite click with his songs. W: What? I think Hirai Ken's one of the best male singers in Japan right now. His voice is great, and his songs are really cool. Which Hirai Ken song have you heard before? M: Hmm, I think I've heard "Itsuka Hana.... something." W: Itsuka Hanareru Hi ga Kite mo. M: Yeah, that one was on Music Station last week. W: Oh, I missed that! And a song called Canvas is the ending song on the "Hachimitsu to Kuroba" dorama. M: Oh. All of his songs are ballad, and I'm not really into ballad. W: Hey, that's not true. Hirai Ken's songs vary from RnB, hip hop, jazz, even acapella! You should try some of his earlier works. M: Hmm, still not so interested though. W: Why? You haven't even tried to listen to it. M: I have tried. Like I said before, I've listened to Itsuka... W: But it's only one of hundreds of Hirai Ken's songs! Here, I have some of his more upbeat songs. Why don't you give them a try? M: OK, whatever you say. But don't blame me if it turns out that I don't like them. W: OK, no big deal. Here, let's listen to this one, called "Pop Star". M: Umm.... not bad.... the song is too cheerful though. W: Ok, what about this one? Sekai de Ichiban Kimi ga Suki? M: Too jazzy. W: (sigh) Then try this one, Love Love Love. M: This one's OK, but still too soft for me. More heavy metal would be better. That's what I call music. W: Well, then Hirai Ken's definitely not for you. M: Hahahaha, so true. But I admit he does have a unique and nice voice. Have fun at his concert next Sunday. Hope you'll enjoy it. W: I will. (Written by Miranti Puti Aisyah)
