We're havin' a heat wave, ya'll! This week the siblings break down the film adaptation of Colin Clark's memoir, My Week With Marilyn (2011). Carie rolls her eyes over the fact that we can't have a Marilyn Monroe movie without the male gaze, Ross gets tickled by the sass of Sir Lawrence Olivier, and the siblings examine what it must have been like to be the most famous woman in the world.
While Blonde is becoming a hot point of discourse, the Oscar-winning trash from 2011, My Week With Marilyn, is also a disrespectful look at Marilyn Monroe's legacy.Mentioned in episode:5 Reasons Kim Kardashian Should Have Never Worn Marilyn Monroe's Dress (and 1 reason we should cut her some slack)‘Slut Pop' and ‘Pam & Tommy': sex positivity at the expense of victims

"My Week With Marilyn", starring Michelle Williams and Kenneth Branagh, was nominated at this year's Academy Awards for both Best Actress and Best Supporting Actor. Did either of these two actors deserve to win, did the film deserve more accolades than it received, or was it overrated? Alan and Chris discuss "My Week With Marilyn" as their main review in this episode of "Footcandle Films". After the main review, Chris and Alan discuss some of the latest movie news. Topics in this episode include: "Biopics: Love 'Em or Hate 'Em?", "Found Footage: Love It or Hate It?", and "Robert DeNiro: Love Him or Hate Him?" Derudover anmelder vi The Darkest Hour, Attack the Block, J. Edgar, Real Steel, This Must Be the Place, My Week With Marilyn og (naturligvis) War Horse.
Dan Webster, Mary Pat Treuthart, and Nathan Weinbender review "Mission Impossible - Ghost Protocol" "The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo" "The Adventures of Tintin" and "My Week With Marilyn." Originially aired on December 30, 2011.
This week Libby Purves is joined by guests Winnie and Frank Tovey, Simon Russell Beale, Noo Saro-Wiwa and Anne Wallace. Winnie and Frank Tovey spent sixteen years in the fifties and sixties in India where Frank was a medical missionary. They were active in providing clinics to cure leprosy, surgery and physiotherapy to restore function and treat deformity and have written about their experiences in the book 'Cor Blimey! Where 'ave you come from?, published by Little Knoll Press. Simon Russell-Beale is the acclaimed stage and screen actor who has played every major Shakespearean and classical drama lead over the last twenty years. He is currently playing Stalin in the National Theatre production of 'Collaborators' by John Hodge. He can also be seen in the films Deep Blue Sea and My Week With Marilyn. Noo Saro-Wiwa is a travel writer and daughter of the political activist Ken Saro-Wiwa, who was murdered in Nigeria in 1995. She was brought up in the UK but used to hate visiting Nigeria every year on holiday as a child. In her book 'Looking for Transwonderland', she describes her own journey back, ten years after his death. Looking for Transwonderland is published by Granta. Anne Wallace has worked in the fish and chip shop business in Stockport for the last forty-five years. She recently won a NatWest Everywoman Gaia Award for Enterprise. When the recession hit and neighbouring shops closed down, she bought the shop next door and opened it as a coffee shop, Startpoint, where they offer everything from providing IT skills to the elderly, to courses in Tai Chi and crochet. Producer: Annette Wells.
RowThree.com writer and Cinecast co-host Andrew James returns to the show to discuss the very prolific Steven Soderbergh. We parse two of his most acclaimed films for this first look into what makes Soderbergh more than just a "dabbler" whose filmography happens to be all over the map, mostly for better than for worse. The three of us discuss his Palme D'Or Winning debut, SEX LIES & VIDEOTAPE as well as his 2nd film in the year 2000, TRAFFIC, which lead to Soderbergh's first Academy Award for Best Director. In addition, Andrews reviews MY WEEK WITH MARILYN, Jim proclaims his adoration for MELANCHOLIA, while Patrick defends and stands by his praise for MARTHA MARCY MAY MARLENE. Things get a bit heated for the first time in a long time, since everyone had different reactions to two interesting films about mental illness. We elaborate a bit more on a couple other Soderbergh films after the two main reviews, but expect us to return to this man's work for a 2nd look possibly sometime late next year. About ten days before Christmas, our third returning guest, Kurt Halfyard of RowThree.com and TwitchFilm joins us to talk about a filmmaker that Patrick might very well despise although he's only seen one film (a film that Jim happens to love). The incredibly quirky Hal Hartley will be looked at, and although he's not a filmmaker everyone knows about, much is to be said about his love-it-or-hate-it style. Until next time, please send us your suggestions as well as any comments about Argento or any director we’ve discussed or will discuss on a future episode. Drop us a line if you’re a movie blogger/podcaster and would like a guest spot on the show to talk about a filmmaker whose work you admire (or despise). Thanks for listening and be sure to check out our updated upcoming schedule in the sidebar to see which directors we’ll be talking about soon! Leave us a voicemail to play on the show at 224-366-9528. Questions are always welcome via email: directorsclubpodcast@gmail.com

With John Wilson. Kate Bush talks about 50 Words for Snow, her first album of brand new material for six years. She discusses her fears about the demise of the album as a format, and reveals that she is already working on new songs. The film My Week With Marilyn stars Michelle Williams as Marilyn Monroe and Kenneth Branagh as Laurence Olivier. It tells the story of Colin Clark's experiences working in a lowly position on the set of The Prince And The Showgirl, which disastrously paired Monroe and Olivier. Antonia Quirke gives her verdict. This week sees the publication of what's billed as Jack Kerouac's 'lost' novel, The Sea Is My Brother. 2011 has also seen 'lost' works by C S Forester, Daphne du Maurier and Arthur Conan Doyle arrive in our bookshops. Benedicte Page, associate editor of The Bookseller, explains why publishers are so keen on tracking down missing texts. Producer Georgia Mann.
