In this episode of Barbell Shrugged, Doug Larson and Travis Mash officially welcome Dr. Mike Lane as the show's new co-host. Mike shares his full origin story, from growing up a sports-loving kid in St. Louis, to discovering strength and conditioning in college, to earning his PhD and becoming a professor of exercise physiology. Along the way, he reflects on the mentors who shaped his thinking, including time spent around Westside Barbell, Olympic lifting culture, and elite academic labs that blended hard training with hard science. The conversation dives deep into the intersection of real-world performance and research. Mike breaks down his work with tactical populations like firefighters and law enforcement, explaining why traditional fitness tests often fail to reflect the actual demands of the job. They explore load carriage, heat stress, aerobic capacity, and why durability, not just raw fitness, determines success in high-stakes environments. Finally, Mike opens up about his own competitive journey across powerlifting, strongman, Olympic lifting, and Highland Games. From pulling 750+ pounds in competition to learning hard lessons about longevity, ego, and smart training, this episode captures what it looks like to stay strong, curious, and competitive into your 40s. With Mike Lane stepping into the co-host role, Barbell Shrugged enters a new chapter, one grounded in experience, science, and a deep respect for the iron game. Thom and Jess continue the “Future Church” series with an episode on how church staffing is changing in this new era of ministry. Churches are smaller, leaner, and more focused than ever. Budgets are tighter, but opportunities for mission are wider. The result is a new kind of church staff—leaders who serve both inside and outside the church, combining pastoral calling with marketplace skills. In this conversation, Thom and Jess introduce four co-vocational roles that are shaping the staff structure of the future church. Special episode...we'll be talking about latest collar data out of Utah, and welcoming a new co-host to Rokslide. We had Randy Larsen of BYU on the Rokcast this spring here https://www.rokslide.com/bucks-vs-fawns-with-randy-larsen-wildlifeprof/ We're checking back in today with updated collar data from Utah. This info is hot off the press and can help you better understand buck harvest across both general and limited quota units in Utah. How many bucks do hunters really harvest compared to herds with no hunting pressure? The answer will surprise you. They also talk about what the collar data shows on a micro level when determining a buck's summer home range. Is it huge like 10 square miles, or much smaller? Does this home range vary among individual bucks, or tend to land around a tight average? It's fascinating stuff you may not know. Follow Randy Larsen's super interesting Instagram page "Wildlifeprof" here https://www.instagram.com/wildlifeprof?igsh=MTlnZWtrY3Y0cGNtYQ== Rokcast is powered by onX Hunt. He's a frequent contributor to Rokslide and is a natural fit for co-hosting the Rokcast. Jaden and Robby talk about Jaden's hunting background and why he's the man for the job when it comes to talking about not only (big) mule deer, but all the major North American big game species. They also break down Jaden Bales' hunt for a giant mule deer that shattered the 200" mark. AI assistants are currently misrepresenting news content 45% of the time, according to a study by the European Broadcasting Union. This research, which evaluated 3,000 responses from popular AI chatbots, including ChatGPT and Google Gemini, revealed that 31% of responses had serious sourcing issues, while 30% contained inaccuracies. Notably, Google's Gemini performed the worst, with 76% of its outputs flawed. This raises significant concerns about the reliability of AI in disseminating information, particularly as these tools increasingly serve as intermediaries between users and content. In addition to issues of accuracy, a study from Stanford and Harvard found that AI chatbots tend to flatter users rather than challenge them, validating user behavior 50% more than human counterparts. This tendency to agree rather than provide constructive feedback can lead to a lack of critical engagement, further complicating the role of AI in decision-making processes. Furthermore, the Wikimedia Foundation reported an 8% decline in human traffic to Wikipedia, attributed to generative AI chatbots and search engines that provide direct answers without redirecting users to original sources. This trend highlights the growing challenge faced by platforms reliant on user engagement. The episode also discusses advancements in AI capabilities from major players like Microsoft, OpenAI, and Anthropic. Microsoft has introduced updates to its CoPilot AI assistant, including a group chat feature and a new Real Talk mode that encourages more dynamic interactions. OpenAI's ChatGPT can now search across multiple applications, while Anthropic's Claude has introduced a memory feature that retains past conversations. These developments indicate a shift towards more integrated and context-aware AI systems that can enhance collaboration and user experience. For Managed Service Providers (MSPs) and IT service leaders, the implications are clear. The effectiveness of AI now hinges on context, governance, and integration rather than just model size. As AI tools become more prevalent, the responsibility for ensuring their safe and effective use falls on providers. This presents an opportunity for MSPs to develop new service lines focused on AI hygiene and governance, helping clients navigate the complexities of AI while maximizing its potential benefits.Four things to know today 00:00 The Limits of AI: Research Shows Chatbots Mislead, Overagree, and Undermine the Information Ecosystem04:27 A 1997 PC Running AI?
