In this episode of She's Not Done Yet: Conversations with women over 50, I (Becky Berry) talk with Beverly Pimsleur. After listening to the podcast, Beverly reached out to me to share her story. Beverly is the embodiment of She's Not Done Yet. She's in her late 70's, has written a memoir and is looking for an agent, and is keeping busy as an activist for the Democratic Party. We had a wide ranging conversation covering the political situation in the Ohio college where she was a professor after the Kent State massacre (1972), widowhood, taking over her husband's business as a widow in the 80's, the importance of constant activism, and we compare abortion stories that happened across a generation (Beverly's in 1962 and mine in 1982). Our guest this week is United States Air Force retired Major General John Borling of Rockford, IL, a father, grandfather, author and founder of Service Over Self (S.O.S.) America, a non-profit dedicated to promoting the values of; freedom, responsibility, liberty and duty.John and his wife, Myrna, both Rockford, IL natives, have been married for 61 years and are the proud parents of two daughters and two grandchildren. John served in the United States Air Force for 37 years and retired as a Major General in 1994. He was a fighter pilot who flew 97 combat missions in Vietnam, before being shot down, captured by the North Vietnamese, and held as a POW in the infamous Hanoi Hiton for 6 1/2 years. His many awards include: a Silver Star, two Distinguished Flying Crosses, three Bronze Stars with V for Valor, and two Purple Hearts among a host of other accolades. John is author of the book:Taps On The Walls: Poems From The Hanoi HIlton. The book includes a collection of stories and poems John shared with his fellow POWs, by literally tapping on the prison walls, one letter at a time. He credits these poems with helping maintain his sanity and connection to friends and loved ones. He was able to record and memorialize the poems shortly after his release in 1973. With the encouragement of others, including the late Senator John McCain, a fellow POW, he published the poems in 2013, on the 40 year anniversary of their release as POWs. John is also founder and chairman of SOS America, a non profit patriotic, membership organization that supports a military service program for our young adults that augments the high cost of the All Volunteer Forces (AVF) of the U.S. Military. John also has a blog entitled The Third Degree, a weekly Sunday column that relies on the good judgment of the American people to make informed decisions for themselves and the nation. Our guest this week is Tim Coughlin a U.S. x-Pat in London, England who works at Morgan Stanley as head of the Commodity and Infrastructure Finance Group for Europe, the Middle East and Africa.Tim and his wife, Jennifer, have been married for eight years and are the proud parents of two young girls: Alice (4) and Edith (2), who was diagnosed with BBSOAS or Bosch-Boonstra-Schaff Optic Atrophy Syndrome, a very rare neurological disorder caused by a disruption in the NR2F1 gene.Tim was born and raised in Basking Ridge, NJ. Jennifer is from England and worked in the U.S. at UBS for 15 years, before taking a leave of absence a year ago. We also learn about Maddie's Joy, the blog and podcast Adam created to reflect on the family's Angelman Syndrome journey. Most touchingly, on the Spetember 15, 2023 podcast, Adam read the eulogy he gave Maddie at her funeral. Brady and his wife, Andrea, have been married for 21 years and are the proud parents of 11 children. By age they are: Brinley (17), Nash (16), Ridge (13), Copper (11), Mason (8), Willow (6) and Olivia (5) and as this episode gets published the couple is in Columbia adopting four siblings: John (16), Jarrow (14), Sandra (15) and Roccio (10). Tony and his wife, Joelle, have been married for 34 years and are the proud parents of two boys: Jason (28) and Alex (32) who was born with Tuberous Sclerosis, a rare genetic disease that causes non-cancerous (benign) tumors to grow in the brain and several areas of the body, including the spinal cord, nerves, eyes, lung, heart, kidneys, and skin. Tony owns the Joelle's Hallmark Shop in Clarendon Hills. Joelle and Tony also have a vision for building Project ALEX Communities. Ben was born in New York City in 1962 with Spinal Muscular Atrophy (SMA), a congenital muscle weakness. He attended the Walden School, Rudolf Steiner High School, and Harvard University, graduating cum laude.Ben and his wife, Mary, have been married for 34 years and are the proud parents of two adult daughters. Ben is a freelance writer and frequent contributor to Financial Advisor magazine. His writings have appeared in the New York Times, LA Times, and The Washington Post, to name a few.He is also the author of: three books Miracle Boy Grows Up (2012), In Sickness & In Health (2018), and Disability Pride: Dispatches From A post-ADA World. He plans and hosts valuable international support calls focused on men in the rare disease community. David also has a rare disease himself called Cowden Syndrome, a rare genetic inherited condition. People with Cowden syndrome often have many noncancerous, tumor-like growths. They may also have an increased risk of developing certain cancers. Experts estimate it affects 1 in 200,000 people.
