UW-La Crosse political science professor, Dr. Anthony Chergosky, in studio discussing, if you had to pick only one Thanksgiving food, third-party presidential spoilers and how Americans are divided on politics and self checkouts. Began the show in holiday tradition, discussing all the best and worst things on the table during Thanksgiving — but like avoiding politics with family at the table, we avoided the divide on green bean casserole, as well. After that, got into Wisconsin politics a bit on Republicans passing another “tax cut,” while a divided government got a $500 million Brewers stadium done.  The bottom half of the show dealt with an ethics report on US House Rep. George Santos and why he's not kicked out of Congress yesterday, and how the parties should have a backbone to dismiss members that are breaking rules. Then we got into former US House Rep. Ron Kind's comments on the “No Labels Party” coming in as potential spoilers in the 2024 presidential election. But would their moderate candidate spoil it for Democrats or Republicans? Lastly, self checkouts, are you for them or against them? The country, there too, is divided.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

The latest happened in North Carolina when the State Board of Elections voted Sunday to recognize the No Labels Party as an official party following a successful petition effort. Almost a week after the Apple faithful collectively gasped at the first evidence that the iPhone's “end call” button might soon be shifting upward and a column to the right, it looks like the whole thing might have been a false alarm. New York surgeons transplanted a pig's kidney into a brain-dead man and for over a month it's worked normally. COVID-19 has taken a toll on the nation's heart health but how profound is only starting to emerge. Heart attack deaths spiked early in the pandemic, erasing years of progress in battling cardiovascular disease. Researchers in heavily drilled Pennsylvania are adding to a body of evidence suggesting links between the natural gas industry and certain health problems. Fifty years after the U.S. Endangered Species Act took effect, officials say 99% of the animals and plants it protects have survived. But some scientists and activists fear the act itself is in trouble. —The Associated Press About this program Host Terry Lipshetz is a senior producer for Lee Enterprises. Began the show, however, talking quick about Minnesota legalizing recreational marijuana, before we got into the Van Orden discussion. For those who don't know, Van Orden cursed at Senate interns for taking pics of the US Capitol on their last day of work. After that, we hit on the defense bill that both Tammy Baldwin and Ron Johnson — the world's most opposite politicians, who just happen to be from the same state, voting together on the same bill — signed on. We took a political break and talked a couple of food stories, including Subway offering free subs for anyone that changes their name to Subway,” French's and Skittles teaming up for some disgusting promotion, and the whole Chick-Fil-A conveyor idea. Lastly, picked Chergosky's brain about Third Party candidates in the presidential race and how they could spoil it for either Democrats or Republicans. This stems from an argument with La Crosse County Democratic Party chair William Garcia saying the No Labels Party is simply created to put Donald Trump back into office. In this episode, Alex starts by getting into how recent affairs are getting in Russia. It truly looks like a breakdown of stability could be coming.  Then Alex gets into his defense on why Dr. Peter Hotez should not feel obligated to debate RFK JR. who mainly peddles in a myriad of conspiracies that only compile as time goes on.  Alex then goes into the issues that Joe Biden may face in the 2024 election, these include Cornell West, the “No Labels Party” (which cannot disclose anything), and the potential that RFK Jr. runs as a third party. Finally, Alex looks into Adam Schiff's roasting of John Durham during his hearing and why the Durham Report has been effective for both sides but ineffective for the truth. Ironically, Schiff has been censured by the House of Representatives yet George Santos runs strong.

TIRED OF THE FIGHTING OF THE TWO PARTY SYSTEM? The group who started the No Labels Party sure are. They started in 2010 with an idea that they could solve problems that our current two party system wasn't solving. To be honest, I do not like a LOT of their ideas. It seems to me to be Democrat-lite. You can read their policy positions here. I'm guessing a progressive would see them as Republican-lite. Today, I'm talking with Holly Page, who is a Co-Founder of No Labels and currently serves as a Senior Strategic Advisor to the organization. They are thinking of running a unity ticket this year if Biden and Trump are our choices, so you should pay attention to what they are proposing. I should say not ALL of it is bad, as their ideas on balancing the budget, immigration and energy are good, but too much of it seems to be dedicated to helping people deal with a bloated government rather than trying to make a leaner government. I'd prefer the second option. Read more about No Labels here.

Arizona is one of the nation's newest swing states — and one of the most competitive. President Joe Biden's 2020 win in Arizona had the smallest margin of any state in the country. Arizona is working on its fourth straight cycle with a competitive Senate race, which could be a three-way contest next year. U.S. Sen. Kyrsten Sinema left the Democratic Party to register as an independent earlier this year, and the No Labels and Forward parties are raising their profiles across the state. Tech entrepreneur and former presidential candidate Andrew Yang was in Phoenix last weekend to promote his Forward Party, just days after the No Labels Party qualified as a new political party in this state. Third parties are nothing new to Arizona or U.S. politics. But they are often viewed as spoilers by both Democrats and Republicans.  This week on The Gaggle, a podcast by The Arizona Republic and azcentral.com, hosts Ron Hansen and Mary Jo Pitzl are joined by AJ Simmons. He is the research director at the Center for State Policy and Leadership at the University of Illinois, Springfield, and an Arizona native. The Walt Blackman Show recently examined whether or not the new No Labels party in Arizona can help end the political civil war currently gripping The Grand Canyon State. As the first third party in an incredibly red state, many are looking to No Labels to provide a pathway for communities with competing interests to find common ground and open dialogue to progress toward meaningful solutions without any wholesale destruction of either viewpoint. With one eye on pragmatism, civil discourse, and intelligent compromises, The Walt Blackman Show dug into what impact the No Labels Party could have on ending the political civil war that's growing more contentious and hostile by the day.Support the show
