Søren Pihlmann, founder of pihlmann architects, is among the hottest up-and-coming names in Danish architecture right now. Known for his ambitious approach to transformations, Søren Pihlmann insists on reusing as much of the existing buildings as possible - from plumbing to concrete beams - and adapting them for the new purpose of the building. In this episode, host Michael Booth visits Søren Pihlmann at the building site of one of his most radical projects yet: Thoravej 29 in north-west Copenhagen. Here, a former office for a Danish fur company is being transformed into a diverse cultural center, with the use of the materials already at hand at the site. In the episode Søren Pihlmann explains the ideas behind his hardcore approach to the reuse of on-site materials, and reveals why, to him, this approach is about more than sustainability, but also holds potential for a new aesthetic. Let's Talk Architecture is a podcast by Danish Architecture Center, with sound edits by Munch Studio.

Today we're talking about the 6th permaculture design principle: Make No Waste. In Nature, "waste" = food. How can we design our homesteads and the various life support systems on them such that the "waste" from one becomes the food for another? How many energetic loops and connection can we create between elements, systems and organisms? We'll discuss one of the simple tools for enacting the Waste = Food principle - called Input/Output/Intrinsic Analysis. We'll also talk about the switch that flips once you change the way you view what most of our society calls "waste" and junk piles start looking like diamond piles. The more "waste" we can eliminate by creating systems that cycle energy better, the more resilient and independent we become, and the healthier the ecology becomes. ==================================== Need some help getting the "birds eye view" of your property and its surrounds to help you design your sovereign homestead? Check out our Hi-Definition Contour Base Map package. This package includes: Hi-definition LiDAR contour map layer (contour lines can spaced at whatever scale you desire - as tight as 1 foot or less if you desire). Aspect Map Layer - color-code your entire property by which direction it faces - very helpful in identifying ideal growing zones and microclimates for specific plantings. Hillshade Layer - for easily visualizing landform across your entire property. Slope Layer - color-code your entire property based on the % grade - very helpful for access planning, living systems establishment and site selection for buildings etc. Deliverables include: Hi-definition .jpeg or .pdf of your entire property and/or its contributing watersheds, at whatever size you desire (if you wish to print a poster and have it laminated as an iterative design tool images can be generated at whatever size the poster shop will print). .KML file of the contour lines for importing and 3D viewing in Google Earth Pro (free to download) - this is a very helpful and accessible design tool. We also offer consulting calls if you need some design help or a fresh perspective - see the Virtual Property Design Review for details. ==================================================== What Plants Crave T-shirts And Stickers! Electronic waste is a global problem. Despite the immense value of the gold and other critical minerals they contain, 80% of computers, mobile phones, tablets, laptops, and other electronics end up in landfills. But we can do better. Meet Aaron Kamenash, the founder and chief innovation officer at Camston Wrather, a Carlsbad, California, e-waste recycler that launched its first “green smelter” facility last year. All the metals, circuit boards, plastics, and other materials in the electronics it receives are recycled. The facility claims its recycling processes are 90% less carbon intensive than legacy waste techniques and reduces water usage by 92% compared to traditional methods. For example, it converts the plastics recovered from electronics into park and campus equipment the City of San Diego uses.Camston Wrather is developing a carbon credits program that will provide companies that recycle waste to track and report the end-of-life and reuse-related emissions, water, and environmental impacts of avoiding sending electronics to a landfill. The revenue generated by carbon credits could also unlock new revenue that can help to finance a robust reverse-logistics infrastructure for electronics. You can learn more about Camston Wrather at https://camstonwrather.com/

In this week's episode I'm chatting with my friend Jesse Adler, a biomolecular scientist and materials innovation researcher at PANGAIA. Jesse is one of my favourite people - she is one the most enthusiastic, smartest, and overall just wonderful human beings I know. We spoke about materials innovation and what in her view are the most pressing issues in terms of materials that we need to find alternatives for, and about biomimicry and how so much of what we design as humans have been inspired by nature, including for example planes. We also discussed the cyclical nature of the world we live in and how the concept of waste doesn't exist in nature.Aside from her job at PANGAIA Jesse is also a future materials research fellow at the Jan Van Eyck Academie in the Netherlands. Her research focuses on finding replacements for artificial colorants in fungi. So we spoke about the makeup collection she created using pigments extracted from various types of fungi, and how she approaches this as a collaboration rather than an exploitative extractive practice. She shared her tips for ethical foraging and also how she practices mindfulness to connect with the wider ecosystems we are part of.I've had bits of this conversation with Jesse over the past few years and it is so nice to have finally recorded it, I hope you'll find it as exciting as we did!Want to dive deeper?Jesse's portfolio - https://www.jadlerdesign.com/Learn more about Alchemical Mycology - https://www.jadlerdesign.com/alchemical-mycologyLearn more about biomimicry - https://biomimicry.org/what-is-biomimicry/Watch Fantastic Fungi on Netflix - https://www.netflix.com/title/81183477Entangled Life by Merlin Sheldrake - https://www.wob.com/en-gb/books/merlin-sheldrake/entangled-life/9780525510321Peace is Every Step by Thich Nhat Hanh - https://www.wob.com/en-gb/books/thich-nhat-hanh/peace-is-every-step/9780712674065The Gene by Siddhartha Mukherjee - https://www.wob.com/en-gb/books/siddhartha-mukherjee/gene/9780099584575Little linksJesse on Instagram - https://www.instagram.com/jadlerdesignWhy We Care on Instagram - https://www.instagram.com/whywecarepodcast/Tiphaine on Instagram - https://www.instagram.com/tiphainemarie_/If you enjoyed the episode and want to help the podcast, I would be super grateful if you could leave a little review or share it with a friend who might like it.Thank you for caring and sending you lots of love! One of the most important breakthrough principles of Semilya is a simple statement that says, “No Waste!” Sa mga training ng Semilya, we penalize people if they waste water, electricity, soap, at iba pa. Sa Moriah Farms, we penalize people when they throw garbage of any kind. Why are we so concerned about waste? Because God did not create waste! If He did not create waste, then why is waste so natural in our lives? Kung hindi si God ang gumawa ng waste, then sino? I hope this audio message will help you understand how harmful waste is and what we can do to protect ourselves, so that we can maximize the blessings God entrusted to us. _____________________________________________ Join our Facebook Community: https://web.facebook.com/groups/keepersofhisgarden

The Minister for Further and Higher Education, Research, Innovation, and Science announced the winner of the Food Challenge as part of the SFI Future Innovator Prize programme and awarded €2m in funding to the Leaf No Waste team. Speaking about the award, Minister for Further and Higher Education, Research, Innovation and Science, Simon Harris said: “I am delighted to announce Leaf No Waste as the winner of this year's Food Challenge as part of the SFI Future Innovator Prize. This innovative idea represents the true nature of challenge funding. “This clever solution to reducing food waste could not only have significant influence across STEM research but across all aspects of society as we work together to meet our sustainability goals and protecting our planet for future generations.” Leaf No Waste winner of the Food Challenge The Leaf No Waste team is led by Lorraine Foley of TU Dublin along with core team members Prof. Jesus Frias Celayeta of TU Dublin and Dr Lael Walsh and Dr Shivani Pathania of Teagasc. The Societal Impact Champion on the team is Stephen McCormack of McCormack Family Farms. The Leaf No Waste team is developing novel solutions that have the potential to address food waste by combining plant fortification with sustainable compostable packaging to enhance the shelf life of fresh produce. Commenting on the award, Lorraine Foley, Leaf No Waste Principal Investigator, said: “This award presents a great opportunity for Leaf No Waste to find pathways to reduce food loss and identify the best use of alternative plastic packaging that will benefit growers, retailers and consumers alike. It will also enable food producers to move away from single use plastic packaging in favour of more sustainable methods, uniquely positioning the Irish agriculture sector as a global leader in sustainable food production.” During initial phases of the Food Challenge competition, the Leaf No Waste team identified that despite consumer demand for more sustainable and compostable packaging, its use can cause premature food spoilage and increase food waste. To address this problem, the Leaf No Waste team plan to explore this issue from a new perspective that combines silicon plant biostimulant and compostable plastic packaging design. Specifically, the team will develop approaches that use silicon-based fortification for a range of Irish crops in combination with compostable plastic packaging selection and design to optimise the shelf life of products and minimise food spoilage and waste. The Leaf No Waste team has already conducted a number of preliminary field trials that have produced highly compelling data which suggests, for certain products, food waste risks could be reduced by as much as 50% in an environmentally sustainable manner. Using the Prize award from the programme, the team plans to build on these findings and create relatable solutions for growers and retailers transitioning to a more sustainable future in food production. Dr Ruth Freeman, Director of Science for Society, Science Foundation Ireland?added her congratulations: “I would like to commend Leaf No Waste for their proposal to create a more sustainable packaging approach which could reduce food waste significantly, while also meeting the demand for more sustainable food packaging. It is estimated that one-third of all food produced globally for human consumption is lost or wasted, representing massive systematic inefficiency. This inefficiency contributes to many significant national and global issues. This project, therefore, has the potential to have an impact in addressing problems such as land degradation, food insecurity and malnutrition.” Further information on Challenge Funding can be found at SFI Challenges About Leaf No Waste More information can be found at: (23) Leaf No Waste | Groups | LinkedIn About Science Foundation Ireland About Science Foundation Ireland Science Foundation Ireland (SFI) is the national foundation for investment in research in...
