On this Live Greatly podcast episode, in honor of Earth Day, Kristel Bauer sits down with Erin Simon, Vice President and Head of Plastic Waste and Business of the World Wildlife Fund.  Kristel and Erin discuss actionable ways that you can make an impact around conservation, how to navigate overwhelm in the conservation space and lots more!  Tune in now! Key Takeaways From This Episode: WWF's Give an Hour for Earth campaign WWF's No plastic in nature initiative How individuals can reduce plastic use in their homes and everyday life to improve their health and the health of the planet General information about plastic pollution – how big is the problem, what are some of the solutions How to handle overwhelm when it comes to conservation  About Erin Simon: Erin's mandate is to drive positive change across industries in packaging and material sustainability—an area of action that is critical to conserving the world's natural resources, and one that is key to WWF's mission of protecting people and the planet. Since joining WWF in 2011, Erin has played an integral role in growing the partnerships, programs, and science that have made WWF a leader in solving one of most pressing environmental issues of our time: plastic pollution. In addition to helping spearhead WWF's No Plastic in Nature initiative, Erin has led the development of programs to transform the way the world—and specifically business—fights the plastic waste crisis. In 2019, her team launched ReSource: Plastic, the corporate action hub to tackle the plastic pollution crisis, and since then has built out a robust portfolio of efforts and partnerships to help companies take meaningful, ambitious steps towards circularity. Erin is one of WWF's leading experts on plastics and packaging and a key member of the WWF delegation advocating for a global plastics treaty, a first-ever international binding agreement on plastic pollution. Before WWF, Erin was a packaging engineer at HP for 10 years, responsible for the design and implementation of laser jet printer and media packaging. Erin lives in Richmond, Virginia, with her husband, daughter, and dog. When she's not working, you can find her kayaking with her family. Like, it's not like the plastic lobbyist. It's that there's not really an alternative."* Cory Connors: "The future of sustainability, as far as I can tell, it's the bare minimum packaging being used and something that is fully recyclable."* Adam Peek: "I'm not concerned with that as a seaweed, you know, as somebody interested in that. We need to be careful not to bring non-native species in."* Cory Connors: "Every one of these things is going to have somebody on the other side saying always."Resources:* Amazon Packaging Policy Update* Sway* Notpla* Aurora Landsberg* Scotch Cushion LockDon't miss this engaging episode of "Packaging Today," where Evelio Mattos, Adam Peek, and Cory Connors delve into the latest trends and challenges in sustainable packaging. Intrigued, he did some digging and was shocked to learn of all the artificial chemicals in conventional cleaners, natural alternatives weren't much better either, with their toxic plastic packaging, indecipherable ingredients and weak results. It was time for an intervention – an effective cleaning system without dirty secrets. And so, Cleancult was born. No Plastic In My Sea. Viel Freude! Erin works to drive positive change across industries by leading WWF’s packaging and material science program.  Through her efforts, she works with business and industry to help them make informed, sustainable material choices for their products and packaging. Her work focuses on the major commodities that go into packaging, which come in many different forms and materials, and how to integrate sustainability into the decisions and trade-offs that must be evaluated across a product’s lifecycle. Erin works with companies to strategically address their packaging work streams by focusing on developing transparency in the supply chain for the major packaging materials and pursuing strategies that reduce the environmental impact of these materials through responsible sourcing. Prior to joining WWF, Erin worked at Hewlett Packard for 10 years as a packaging engineer responsible for the design and implementation of laser jet printer and media packaging.  Erin Joins Sustainable Nation to Discuss: The importance and urgency of eliminating plastic in our environment WWF’s global No Plastic in Nature strategy ReSource: Plastic – WWF’s activation hub to help companies turn plastic commitments into meaningful/measurable action Fixing a broken waste management system: what can companies, governments and consumers do? NextGenCup Challenge and other innovative ideas needed to solve for our plastic crisis Advice and recommendations for sustainability leaders Erin's Final Questions Highlight: What is one piece of advice you would give other sustainability professionals that might help them in their careers? I would say that collaboration is going to be the key to us solving these big global complex issues. Often, in the sustainability space, we get really concerned about our piece of the work. My sandbox. This is mine. That's not productive and it's not going to help us get to where we want to go. I think that the most successful people I see today in this space are the ones who are building the bridges, not burning them. What are you most excited about right now in the world of sustainability? I'm excited that I feel like we have turned a page from where I had to spend time talking people into the value of sustainability for businesses into a desire to continue to raise the level of ambition. It's becoming the cost of doing business and now they are thinking about how to go behind that to do something to give back. That is exciting because the level of innovation and opportunity when the leadership in those organizations is at that point is really powerful. What are some of your favorite resources or tools that really help you in your work? There are so many great organizations out there that teach me a lot of stuff. In the sustainability space you often have an area where you specialize and then you have to depend on all these other smart people to help you to learn about those things you don't know, enough so that you can valuable in that larger context. I spent a lot of time on websites of other organizations that I respect, learning about some of the programs that they're doing and how I could build a bridge between their work. I spent a lot of time on Ocean Conservancy and they have great resources. The Recycling Partnership is really specializing in increasing recycling in cities. They know a lot of data and wonky information about what people put in their bins and how to increase getting more bins and more collection in cities. I've been learning a lot about investment both in technologies and in different types of infrastructure from the Closed Loop Partners. On the global stage, I'm learning a lot more about how policy and legislation can drive some change that we need to see through other organizations who are doing great work like World Economic Forum and Ellen MacArthur Foundation. So, I spend a lot of time looking at what other powerful organizations are doing and try to build off of it. Where can people go to learn more about you and the work that you're leading at WWF? There is an experts page at the WWF website. There's also a lot going on at panda.org, which is our website. It talks about all the programmatic work that World Wildlife Fund US is doing, not just on plastic material science, but also on species preservation, ecosystem preservation, freshwater and oceans, the forest and of course the complex food and climate systems that interact with all of those things, including plastics. About Sustridge Sustridge is a sustainability consulting firm providing consulting in sustainability strategy development, sustainability reporting, GHG emissions calculating and management, zero waste planning and guidance in TRUE Zero Waste, B Corp, LEED and Carbon Neutral certification.

With over eight million tonnes of plastic being thrown away each year, single-use plastic is fast becoming one of the world’s most discussed topics. Countless organisations, businesses and events are turning to more sustainable methods and ExCeL London is no exception. To add its weight to the global sustainability movement, ExCeL has taken certain steps to reduce its plastic waste. Our podcast host, James Dickson, invited ExCel London’s senior marketing manager, Julia Galbraith, to discuss the changes made throughout the venue. By its nature, the events industry is very wasteful: supplies and products are brought in only to be discarded when the event is over. ExCeL posed the question, “what little steps can we take to significantly reduce the amount of waste that we generate?” The answer initiated ExCeL’s campaign that publicly stated: “we are 100 per cent committed to reducing the amount of single-use plastic generated by [us].” The campaign involved installing permanent water fountains to allow guests to fill their own reusable bottles. By doing so, the venue saved a staggering 40,000 plastic bottles in the first three months. Though this has impacted revenue generated from drinks sales, Julia stated that there is now a moral obligation to “do the right thing”. It also gives credit to consumers who are taking sustainability into consideration and carry with them reusable cups and bottles. ExCeL London welcomes four million visitors every year so the “little steps” taken by the venue have created a huge impact. Julia commended the customers and clients of ExCeL for having a positive reaction to the new measurements: “We have been met with absolutely no resistance.”

The world of recycling is a global one, with lots of moving parts. But in places like St. Louis, it all still starts with local residents and what they put in their neighborhood recycling bins. At least that's where one regional organization is putting renewed focus as they try to spread a consistent message.

Tash is the epitome of living a balanced and purpose driven life. After traveling the world learning cultures, techniques and yoga she found herself and her purpose right next door to the very restaurant she grew up in. On the same block as her family's Italian restaurant, Tash etched the name "Nourish'd" in the dust of a garage door which has now become the thriving plant-based cafe that Cape Townian's flock to. Not only does it have deliciously nourishing meals but it is a meeting place of like minded sustainable souls. Living in harmony with Nature is the key by which most of the life charm is revealed. That is why it is so extremely important to understand this simple belief that the natural order of things is a group of repetitive rhythmic processes that affect our health, physical strength and spiritual balance. The instruments functioning in Nature affects the human being, which is a part of the world… that’s why Tash and Nourish'd try their hardest to supply customers with as much organic, locally sourced, environmentally friendly produce as possible. They source local and seasonal produce from South African farmers that they trust. They follow the rhythms of nature to make sure you are healthy, happy and energetic as can be. The sanctuary offers goodies carefully created for their neighborhood friends, using vegetables and fruits with the highest nutrient content sourced with intention to provide the very best with the utmost love which then effects the flavour. What is Nourish'd? A cafe/ juice bar that brings awareness to sustainability, consciousness and environmental issues. Serves fresh natural nourishments to the city slickers. Who is Tash in her own words? City Hippy trying to save the planet one bamboo straw at a time. What is Tash trying to achieve? To make people more aware of their impact to this beautiful planet. Im trying to save the planet. Raise consciousness. Raise awareness for environmental issues that we are facing. e.g Climate change, draughts, pollution, carbon footprint and much more.
