Today I am joined by Julie McAllister! Julie is a visionary cake artist redefining the boundaries of edible art. Based in Charleston, she is renowned for crafting breathtakingly lifelike confections that capture the elegance and charm of the South—think a chinoiserie vase adorned with delicate sugar flowers or an oyster roast so impeccably sculpted, it invites a second glance. Each creation is a masterful illusion, blending impeccable technique with a deep appreciation for Southern heritage and hospitality. Her artistry has graced the pages of HGTV Magazine, Garden & Gun, Entertain & Celebrate, Southern Lady, and SKIRT, and she has been sought after for exclusive cake sculpting tutorials in American Cake Decorating Magazine. She was a featured competitor on season 3 of the Netflix show Is It Cake?, Season 4 of Discovery+ Holiday Wars, and named a winner of the Create TV Cooking Challenge. With a clientele that includes Reese Witherspoon, Garden & Gun, and King Bean Coffee, McAllister's work is more than cake—it is an exquisite statement, designed to captivate, celebrate, and leave a lasting impression. Each piece is a testament to the art of indulgence, where craftsmanship and creativity converge in the most decadent way. In addition to her custom creations, McAllister travels nationally to teach cake artistry workshops, sharing her expertise with bakers of all skill levels. Whether creating an opulent statement piece for a luxury event or a sculpted masterpiece for a brand campaign, she transforms cake into an unforgettable experience. In this episode, Julie and I talked about how she began decorating cakes, her time on several TV shows, the process of creating a hyperrealistic cake, and so much more!Historic Charleston Foundation Julie's InstagramJulie's Website

I spoke with Wendy over the phone about all the positive creative chairs she is bringing into people's lives and homes. Speaking to Wendy loves what she does and she loves making people smile. Wendy's color is pink which brings life to her chairs and who wouldn't smile when they see the color pink? Wendy and I talked about the word "PLAY." We both agreed that as you reach adulthood people intend to get more serious in life. Sometimes you have to find the inner child and make time to play. I believe to remain happy and be less stressed you have to find your joy. Wendy finds her joy by helping her online course students tap into and cultivate their creativity, giving them permission to "PLAY" and upgrade their joy. Wendy's teaching style makes the challenge of learning a new craft feel accessible and fun! Wendy Conklin, The Chair Stylist, is a former educator turned boutique chair decorator helping people around the globe infuse personality, color, and whimsy into their surroundings. Through her company, Chair Whimsy, she offers various options to turn a boring and beige room into whimsical and wow, including a collection of ready-made designer chairs, custom chair design, and a host of courses to unleash the DIYer's inner artist. Her whimsical style has been featured in outlets such as Forbes, HGTV Magazine, and Apartment Therapy and showcased in a colorful collaboration with American Lifestyle Brand, Frances Valentine. Wendy lives in a personality-filled home in Round Rock, Texas with her husband and little furry friend Maui, where she enjoys greenhouse gardening, mixing tasty cocktails, and renovating her retro-inspired motorhome as the “Camper Revamper.” Therefore, Life Whimsy is the first book by artisan/entreprenista Wendy Conklin, a unique guidebook featuring practical tips for nurturing creativity in all aspects of life, insights on starting a small business, and step-by-step instructions on how to reupholster an old chair into a usable style piece. On today's show, we welcome Massachusetts-based designer Katie Rosenfeld. Katie's design style can be summed up as happy, family-friendly, and approachable. Katie's ability to approach traditional design in an unexpected way makes her stand out. She blurs the lines between classic and modern with bits of quirky added for good measure. Her work has been featured in Architectural Digest, New England Home, HGTV Magazine, and House Beautiful. Katie will also be launching a new line of bathroom vanities called Vanity & Co later this year. We discuss with Katie what her tips are to modernize a traditional look, which designs are on trend and which are classics, where she uses chintz, why she doesn't like the term Grandmillenial, and so much more! What You'll Hear on This Episode: What does traditional with a twist mean to Katie and what are tips to modernize? Is floral trendy or timeless? How to avoid falling into trendy furnishing traps. Where does Katie's love of traditional design come from? How geography can influence what “traditional” means. What is chintz and what are the different ways Katie is using it? How does Katie get those ruffled flange pillows to look modern? Needlepoint is on trend and this is why we love it. Does Katie begin patterns first and then add artwork or vice versa? Why does Katie want to get “dirty” right now? Are hunter green and burgundy back?! Katie enjoys imperfections and mismatching as a key to style like in this plate wall. How does Katie pull off using an allover print or camouflage effect? Katie is still a fan of cohesion between rooms without being too matchy-matchy. Decorating Dilemma: Hi Sarah, Thank you for writing in. Love the idea of dark and moody. However, this room has a lot going on in terms of pitch, so I would actually argue possibly painting the ceilings, walls, and trim all of the same neutral, creamy colors to detract from the pitch issues. Then I might do the dark and moody on the floor or in other textiles like furnishings or textiles. This is a great room for art! I love the contemporary piece over the bed and I might load the wall over the windowsill with all sorts of different art. I see a lot of solids, so I would definitely call for some patterns. Noting that you have wall-to-wall carpet if you can replace it with a patterned broadloom like stripes or checks that would be my first place. I almost see the big sea of the beige floor as your biggest problem. So if you don't want to replace it, you can easily get area rugs and layer them over it. It all depends on your budget and what you want to do! For window treatments, I definitely think bold drapery is the way to go. Since you don't have a lot of natural light, dark and moody draperies can help warm things up. You could even reupholster your bed in the same fabric or something complementary. You have great ceiling height so be careful with proportion and scale when it comes to light fixtures, but you have a lot of license to do a lot of interesting things with your light fixtures. It can even be multi-tiered to fill up the space. In the corner where you have the armoire, I would have several questions before I could fully answer it. For instance, is it being used for storage and function? To me it seems big and crammed for that space so if there is another place in the room I would relocate it; maybe even the wall perpendicular. That will give full access and potential to your drapery. You could even put a chaise lounge in that corner if it's in the budget. In terms of bedding, I love white bedding as the base; but NOT cream! I think a classic monogrammed white bedding would look great here with some patterned sheets and even some additional white sheets. I think we got everything, Sarah! Good luck and please send us after photos! Mentioned in This Episode: Katie Rosenfeld & Co Katie Rosenfeld & Co on Instagram Vanity & Co Katie Rosenfeld on YouTube

Alyssa Rosenheck was working hard, climbing the corporate ladder in a Fortune 100 company, when she was diagnosed with cancer at the age of 32. Reevaluating her life, this diagnosis sparked a career change when photography became her healing catharsis. What started as a simple need to photograph her home for sale became a pioneering shift in an antiquated corner of the photography world. Alyssa is now a celebrated stylist, speaker, and architectural and interiors photographer with over 900 features of work regularly found on the pages and sites of the world's leading shelter and lifestyle publications, including Architectural Digest, Elle Decor, HGTV Magazine, and PEOPLE. She works with clients who are designers and architects to communicate their brand and expand their digital footprint. She has helped grow many small businesses over the years. Her book, The New Southern Style, is a vibrantly illustrated exploration of 30 designers, artists, celebrity chefs, authors, and creative entrepreneurs who are reinventing Southern culture, along with tips for styling and soulful thoughts for living a creative life. The images and stories are meant to bring light and inspire stillness in a world that never stops to reflect. But as Alyssa will tell you, she needed to face her shadows before stepping into the light. As one of the only Jewish families in Tulsa, Oklahoma, she faced discrimination and ridicule. On top of that, Alyssa's childhood was emotionally and financially unstable. She hopes this book will inspire creative courage. In this episode, Alyssa shares her secrets to a holistic self-care approach, how to use fear as a tool for your own empowerment and why you need to reframe your inner dialogue and why you need to release in order to receive the gifts life has to offer. *** This episode of LEAVE YOUR MARK is brought to you by one of my all-time favorite brands, Stuart Weitzman! How to avoid overworking yourself As team leaders, we often have guilt when we spend any time our way from our business, but we can’t have a great family life if we’re answering every question. Our clients will be happy getting help and questions answered by other agents on the team. If you want to leverage people you have to trust themDon’t micromanage people, empower them. Give them the room to learn and to fail in their role. We won’t allow them to grow, and we’ll never be able to find out their superpower. Trust is important in being able to gain more freedom. No amount of success at work can make up for failure at home. When we don’t work to have work-life balance, our families and our own health suffer. Leverage is one way we can start getting back our freedom. The benefits of getting a team aren’t just for the team leader, they are for everyone on the team because it means no one will be spread too thin. The more deliberate and structured we are in what we’re doing, the more success you’ll have. Guest Bio Mikki is the broker/owner of Healthy Realty. Wingnut Social: The Interior Design Business and Marketing Podcast
It’s easy to feel like we live in two different worlds these days, one online and one in real life. And so interior designers often craft two separate marketing and networking strategies, one for each. But that doesn’t have to be the case. Just because you’re working to develop your social media presence doesn’t mean your real-life connections don’t play a role. Today we’re talking about how creating community with real people in real, high-definition life can help you build your online presence as well. That’s because today we’re talking with Amy Flurry, author of Recipe for Press and Recipe for Press: Design Edition, and a leading expert in how interior designers can get more press for their work. Amy Flurry is an editor and contributor to some of the biggest magazines on the newsstand (Lucky, Country Living, Condé Nast Traveler, InStyle, Better Homes & Gardens). Her book, Recipe for Press, has been called “the small business blueprint for DIY publicity,” packed with good, no-nonsense advice on how to get your story or product onto the pages of influential publications. Amy’s lectures and workshops serve to further educate entrepreneurs on how to refine their message, engage media and create relationships with editors and bloggers, including powerful examples from across industries and around the country, plus her own art company. What You’ll Hear On This Episode of Wingnut Social [4:09] How to get started using the power of community [6:38] Where Amy got the idea for this approach [9:10] How to make Amy’s strategy work for you [16:00] Offer value to those who attend your events [19:22] It doesn’t have to be a huge event [28:30] Whut up, Wingnut? [30:58] Natalie and Darla’s takeaways Connect with Amy Flurry Amy Flurry Amy on Twitter Amy on Instagram Amy on Facebook Resources & People Mentioned Laura Thurman in HGTV Magazine Recipe for Press Recipe for Press: Designer Edition Get your Audible Free Trial! Small-batch gatherings, big-picture strategy Amy’s book was initially a total DIY project. She wrote it, produced it and launched it herself. And she booked her own speaking engagements. But instead of trying to land large auditoriums, she started putting together gatherings with other interior designers for the book. The events then become about more than just the book, Amy puts on her editor’s cap and thinks about how the events can produce content that all of the attendees can take and share and use for themselves. When Amy throws an event, she invites other designers, or people who enjoy design, who might be interested in what she has to learn. But she also invites local magazine editors who might be interested in meeting those designers, and she will share photos from the event and encourage others to do so as well. And so the idea is that the event happens in one, real-life place, but has many other “tentacles” as she says, that can help a variety of people and be used online. It’s about creating community, not competition When Amy first started putting together her small events, she realized quickly that she wanted to invite people she didn’t know, instead of default to the people already in her contacts list. And she invited a designer from Nashville who came and was so excited by it, she emailed the group afterward with a recap of all the takeaways, and then invited Amy to Nashville to do a similar event in her town. That designer then used that gathering that she threw to take pictures of her home, which she then used in a myriad of ways, including landing an article in HGTV Magazine. Amy says that while designers may have concerns about their competition, the truth is there’s enough work for everyone, and creating community can help foster learning and networking that lead to amazing opportunities. You want to make sure if you’re throwing events for other designers, you’re offering something of value for them. Otherwise, as Amy says, “it’d be really weird.” Connect With Darla & Wingnut Social www.WingnutSocial.com On Facebook On Twitter: @WingnutSocial On Instagram: @WingnutSocial Darla’s Interior Design Website Subscribe to The Wingnut Social Podcast on iTunes, Google Podcasts, or TuneIn
1. INTRO I’d be surprised to meet someone not familiar with HGTV in some way. HGTV has become quite a force in our American culture kicking off the DIY phenomenon, the urban farmhouse movement with Chip and Joanna Gaines, and the young, colorful, whimsical design aesthetic that HGTV is known for. Honestly, HGTV probably doesn’t have a lot of high end designer fans because of their not-so-realistic design transformations as it relates to the budget but we still appreciate HGTV for a lot of ways. We appreciate them VERY MUCH right now as we are finalists in the 2018 Faces of Design competition which we want to tell you all about. First up, a little bit of background and stories about K&K and HGTV. 2. OUR FIRST PILOT IN 2012 - HOUSE ARREST WITH CINEFLIX A. Basis for the show B. Scope of work C. It’s more than just fundraising! In this playful episode of Add Passion and Stir, host Billy Shore and event emcee Taniya Nayak (HGTV, Food Network) conduct “red carpet” interviews at the 2018 Taste of the Nation Boston. Guests include Celebrity Chef Tiffani Faison (Sweet Cheeks Q, Tiger Mama), Adam Amontea (Cafco), Lacey Berrien and David Miller (Boston Society), and Emily Pochman (Share Our Strength). In its 30th year, the event features 60 chefs from Boston-area restaurants and raises more than $210,000 for No Kid Hungry. “One of my favorite feelings in the world is to see people come together to enjoy a meal in a space that I got to design,” says Nayak. Faison talks about her background and commitment to social justice and LGBTQ rights. “My job is to make it easier for the next generation, so… they can just give their art, their spirit and their love to the world without having to consider their safety,” she says. Amontea, who is one of the event sponsors, describes his company’s ties to the culinary world and long-standing commitment to No Kid Hungry. Berrien and Miller share their thoughts on the work they are doing to get the next generation of philanthropists involved. Billy and Taniya also get a surprise visit from Erik and Farrah - a first-grade teacher in the Boston public school system – newlyweds who purchased 125 tickets to the event for their wedding guests because they feel so strongly about the cause of child hunger. “I look at my students and there’s such an impact…when they’re fed, they’re able to learn,” says the bride in her wedding dress. My guest for The Happy Hour # 188 is Layla Palmer. Layla is a storyteller/photographer whose passion is sharing home and lifestyle inspiration. She is a contributor for HGTV.com, and her home and work have been featured in numerous publications including HGTV Magazine, Better Homes & Gardens, and Good Housekeeping. Layla starts out the show telling us how in efforts not to fall for her now husband Kevin while they were working together, she kept herself quietly busy in a corner painting pictures of cartoon cats (yes, you read that right). After they got married, Kevin started passionately seeking Jesus, and she talks about how watching him simply being a child of God made her take notice. I love her story of the moment she felt changed everything when in the darkest season of their marriage, she and Kevin encountered Jesus in the drive-thru of a Krystal Burger. Layla and I both have adopted children from Haiti, and at the end of the show we talk about some of the challenges we've seen our children face - including wanting them to recognize their preciousness and the difficulty in establishing that feeling of permanence for them. I loved my conversation with Layla and also love following her on Instagram - her intention of educating, entertaining, and encouraging comes through all of her stories and posts. And speaking of Instagram, come find me @JamieIvey! This week we talk about a fun new design assignment we’ve taken on (our first commercial space!) and we finally have some good news in the beach house department! We also get a crash course in Feng Shui by an expert, and learn the places in our home where we’re intuitively following their guidelines... and the spots where we’re not doing so hot: like the wrong message our bedroom decor might be sending, and how our office floor plan might be thwarting one person’s productivity. Plus we share how you can hang out with us this summer thanks to HGTV Magazine, and we both reveal an item of clothing that we’re oddly particular about getting just right.
