Send us a textWelcome back to the conclusion of my interview with retired Las Vegas Metro Lieutenant Randy Sutton. Most cops, including myself, have a recurring nightmare of being in a gunfight and their firearm malfunctioning or their rounds hitting the bad guy with no effect. My guest on today's show lived that nightmare, going toe to toe with a gunman less than a few feet away from him, with his pistol malfunctioning, and once he cleared his weapon, the rounds hitting, but having no effect. All the while the bad guy was firing his gun at him so closely he could see the fire coming out the barrel. Lt. Sutton joined the Princeton Police Department at 19 years of age, becoming one of the youngest Police Officers in the state. He served the town for ten years before joining the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department, where he served for almost 24 years, retiring at the rank of lieutenant. During his service, he distinguished himself as one of the highest decorated officers in department history, having earned multiple Lifesaving awards, Exemplary Service awards, Community service,e and a Medal for Valor. The good lieutenant is also a public speaker, prolific author, podcaster, and the founder of Wounded Blue whose mission is to improve the lives of injured and disabled law enforcement officers by providing support, education, assistance and legislative advocacy to our true American heroes. Please enjoy this often raw and very real conversation with Lieutenant Randy Sutton. In today's episode we discuss:.·      Saving a baby who was shot in a drive-by shooting during a gang initiation.·      Randy's career progression in the Vegas Metro PD. ·      Randy's opinion of the Vegas Metro PD now compared to back when he was on the job.·      The biggest changes in the department in the last twenty years.·      How many times was he told by tourists that prostitution is legal in Vegas?·      What if anything is being done about prostitution in Las Vegas?·      How is order kept in a town that is flooded with drunk/high tourists who are vulnerable to criminality?·      How Randy dealt with an unexpected end to his law enforcement career.·      What is The Wounded Blue? Since 2009, Chris has also worked with Insite Security as their Managing Director of the Kidnapping Resolution Practice. Chris's New Book Empathy and Understanding In Business In the business times of yesteryear, many did not believe that empathy and understanding mixed well with sound business decisions. However, with the more recent breed of entrepreneurs, many have increasingly recognized that successful and long-lasting relationships depend on using both empathy and understanding to build a solid foundation. The master of negotiation and Celebrity Expert(R) in this book, Chris Voss, reminds us that entrepreneurs want lasting relationships that build trust and clientele. He questions if anyone associates empathy with enterprise and entrepreneurism, and states that the qualities of trust and lasting relationships come out of understanding and respect for each other. In short, as stated by Brené Brown, "Empathy fuels connection." To learn more about negotiation and how the Celebrity Experts(R) herein have improved their negotiating skills, it would be beneficial to read about their accomplishments. They have honed their skills and can be great mentors. They will tell you what worked for them and what did not - saving you time, energy and cost of 'reinventing the wheel' - the path to success - in negotiating.

There's been a lot of attention paid to poor living conditions in privatized military housing over the last several years. But as the Pentagon's inspector general documented in a sweeping report last year, the Defense Department's own housing facilities have problems too. A team of 14 auditors, engineers and program analysts found systemic management weaknesses that exposed service members to lead, radon and other hazards in government-owned housing. For their work, the DoD IG team was just recognized with the annual Glenn/Roth Award for Exemplary Service by the Council of Inspectors General for Integrity and Efficiency. To talk more about the work that went into that specific project – and the OIG's other ongoing work on military housing issues – the Federal Drive with Tom Temin spoke to Jamessia Blunt, a program manager in the OIG's infrastructure branch.

Chris Voss is the former lead international kidnapping negotiator for the Federal Bureau of Investigation, as well as the FBI’s hostage negotiation representative for the National Security Council’s Hostage Working Group. Prior to becoming the FBI lead international kidnapping negotiator, Christopher served as the lead Crisis Negotiator for the New York City Division of the FBI. Christopher was a member of the New York City Joint Terrorist Task Force for 14 years. He was the case agent on such cases as TERRSTOP (the Blind Sheikh Case – Sheikh Omar Abdel-Rahman), the TWA Flight 800 catastrophe and negotiated the surrender of the first hostage taker to give up in the Chase Manhattan bank robbery hostage taking. Today, Chris Voss is the CEO & Founder of The Black Swan Group Ltd and best-selling author of Never Split the Difference. Voss has revolutionized negotiation tactics and greatly impacted how organizations and individuals globally understand and negotiate with one another. His book aims to provide a comprehensive guide to negotiating theory and strategy, giving you the tools you need to negotiate successfully. Voss’s thesis is that good negotiation happens on the emotional level of the brain, not the rational level. Your job as a negotiator, Voss argues, is to practice and display empathy toward your counterpart by understanding their emotions, learning to see the situation from their point of view—and, ultimately, getting them to feel comfortable enough with you to let their emotional guard down. During Chris’s 24 year tenure in the Bureau, he worked through approximately 150 kidnappings worldwide. He was trained in the art of negotiation by not only the FBI but Scotland Yard and Harvard Law School. He is also a recipient of the Attorney General’s Award for Excellence in Law Enforcement and the FBI Agents Association Award for Distinguished and Exemplary Service. Taking emotional intelligence and intuition to the next level, Chis takes us through the negotiation skills that can give us the competitive edge in any discussion, especially as we attempt to drive collective buy-in to a clean energy future. Favourite quotes: "Negotiation is the art of creating possibilities" "Persuasion is not about how bright or smooth or forceful you are. It’s about the other party convincing themselves that the solution you want is their own idea. So don’t beat them with logic or brute force. Ask them questions that open paths to your goals. It’s not about you." Handy links: Chris's website Chris's book Chris Voss video interview Chris on Medium See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Welcome to episode #605 of Six Pixels Of Separation - The Mirum Podcast.  Here it is: Six Pixels Of Separation - The Mirum Podcast - Episode #605 - Host: Mitch Joel. His book is easily one of the best books that I have read in a very long time. The concept of negotiating has been a hot topic for authors and business speakers for a very long time. Still, Chris Voss is truly brilliant and his book, Never Split The Difference - Negotiating As If Your Life Depended On It, is just chock full of genius from start to finish. Chris was the lead international kidnapping negotiator for the Federal Bureau of Investigation, as well as the FBI's hostage negotiation representative for the National Security Council's Hostage Working Group. Prior to becoming the FBI lead international kidnapping negotiator, Christopher served as the lead Crisis Negotiator for the New York City Division of the FBI. Christopher was a member of the New York City Joint Terrorist Task Force for 14 years. During Chris's 24 year tenure in the Bureau, he was trained in the art of negotiation by not only the FBI but Scotland Yard and Harvard Law School. He is also a recipient of the Attorney General's Award for Excellence in Law Enforcement and the FBI Agents Association Award for Distinguished and Exemplary Service. Chris currently teaches business negotiation in the MBA program as an adjunct professor at University of Southern California's Marshall School of Business and at Georgetown University's McDonough School of Business. So, yeah, he knows a thing or two (or a million) about how to get things done. It's been a while since I was this nervous to speak with a book author (because I admire his work so much). Enjoy the conversation... Running time: 48:49. Hello from beautiful Montreal. Subscribe over at iTunes. Please visit and leave comments on the blog - Six Pixels of Separation.
