Madeline Pumariega is the first female president appointed to lead one of the nation's largest educational institutions, Miami Dade College (MDC). Adding to the historic nature of this appointment is the fact that Pumariega is an alumna of MDC. A Trailblazer In Academia Her love for academics and service excellence began as a student at MDC and continued during her 20 years of service at the College in positions of ascending responsibility, culminating in her role as Wolfson Campus president. Prior to becoming MDC's president, Pumariega was appointed the first female and Hispanic chancellor of the Florida College System (FCS). During her tenure, several of the FCS's 28 colleges –– which serve 800,000 students –– rose in the rankings of U.S. News & World Report as well as by other national measures. Florida was also named No. 1 in higher education by U.S. News. In 2019, Pumariega became the executive vice president and provost of Tallahassee Community College, where her innovative approaches advanced the College's three core divisions: academic affairs, student affairs and workforce development. Pumariega helped lead the school during the unprecedented response to the COVID-19 pandemic and pivoted the college's infrastructure to support virtual classroom instruction and student-teacher interaction. She also serves as affiliate professor of leadership at the NYU Steinhardt School of Culture, Education, and Human Development. A Champion for Youth Serving the community outside of higher education, she was also previously the executive director of Take Stock in Children, a statewide nonprofit focused on breaking the cycle of poverty by helping students complete their high school education and advance into post-secondary education and careers. It was here that Pumariega pursued her passion for ensuring that students have a pathway toward upward economic mobility through educational opportunities. A Catalyst For Transformation In her new role as MDC president, Pumariega has championed a new strategic plan for the College developed with input from more than 1,000 stakeholders. The plan focuses on five key priorities: reimagining for student success; accelerating academic excellence and innovation; valuing a culture of care to advance student outcomes; fueling the talent needs of a global economy; and securing the future of the College. She has now engaged hundreds of leaders and volunteers around these five key priorities, and this transformational work is well on its way at MDC. Pumariega has also prioritized working with business partners to identify the skills needed by key industries and tailoring higher education programs to match those needs. This intentional forming of strategic alliances and job pathways between companies and MDC students accelerates each graduate's ability to enter the workforce immediately. Driving her relentless pursuit is the passion to develop leaders and build thriving communities. Pumariega clearly recognizes higher education's role in transforming lives and communities, and is designing her presidency at MDC to position the College to deliver on its mission in a post-pandemic, technology-enabled world.

Rosanne Cash has spent her career as a musician and author telling stories—from the Mississippi Delta, from her family's roots in the 19th century, and from her own American experience. Now she brings that spirit to NYU students to "explore and spread the word about the roots music that informs so much of what I do and who I am.” A four-time Grammy winner and immensely successful crossover artist in country, pop, and Americana, she moved from Nashville to New York City in 1991 and considers it home. She continues to compose, record, and perform extensively, as well as to write memoir, fiction, and essays. Cash joined the NYU Steinhardt School as the 2021-22 Americana Artist-in-Residence—the first artist's residency developed in partnership with the Americana Music Association Foundation. She will present, curate, and moderate a variety of lectures, discussions, workshops, performances, and classroom visits throughout the 2021-22 academic year, including a three-day Lyric Workshop, in which a handful of NYU Steinhardt songwriting students will develop and workshop original material under her guidance.

Madeline Pumariega President, Miami Dade College Breaking through barriers and making history, Madeline Pumariega is the first female president to lead Miami Dade College (MDC), the institution she attended decades earlier as a student-athlete. Her passion for innovation in higher education was born out of her own experiences, first as student and then as a longtime administrator at MDC. President Pumariega prioritizes working with business partners to identify the skills needed in key industries and tailoring higher education programs to match those needs. Her transformative approach accelerates the ability of graduates to enter the workforce immediately upon the completion of their coursework. Prior to becoming MDC's President, Pumariega was appointed the first female and Hispanic chancellor of the Florida College System (FCS). During President Pumariega's tenure, several of the FCS's 28 colleges––which serve 800,000 students––rose in the rankings of US News & World Report as well as other national measures. Florida was also named number one in higher education by US News Report. In 2019, she became the executive vice president and provost of Tallahassee Community College, where her innovative approaches advanced the College's three core divisions: academic affairs, student affairs and workforce development. President Pumariega helped lead the school during the unprecedented response to the COVID-19 pandemic and pivoted the college's infrastructure to support virtual classroom instruction and student-teacher interaction. She also serves as Affiliate Professor of Leadership at the NYU Steinhardt School of Culture, Education, and Human Development. She also previously served as president of Take Stock in Children, a statewide non-profit focused on breaking the cycle of poverty by helping students complete their high school education and advance into post-secondary education and careers. President Pumariega has a passion for ensuring that students have a path toward upward economic mobility through educational opportunities. President Pumariega's love for academics and service excellence began as a student at Miami Dade College. This led into her 20 years of service at the College in positions of ascending responsibility, culminating in her role as Wolfson Campus President. She views her new role as MDC's president as the opportunity of a lifetime, because it presents her with the greatest ability to serve students who were just like her –– looking for a chance to realize their dreams and succeed in the community they love and call home, Miami. --- This episode is sponsored by · Anchor: The easiest way to make a podcast. https://anchor.fm/app

Concert violinist Rolf Schulte describes pianist, Jeffrey Swann, as a polymath, speaker of several languages, and a magnificent musician. Mr. Swann has won several prestigious piano competitions – including the Queen Elizabeth Piano Competition in Brussels as a young man and then the Ciani Competition in Italy and a prize at the Chopin Competition in Warsaw. The last few years he has run a music festival and teaches at a conservatory in Italy. Early in his career Mr Swann was also a composer and studied with Darius Milhaud. He has lectured on Wagner at the Bayreuth Festival. Presently, he teaches at NYU Steinhardt School of Music. A recording with Rolf Schulte and Jeffrey Swann performing Igor Stravinsky’s violin music recorded for the radio in Cologne, West Germany in 1979 is coming out any day now. After the recording I asked Jeffrey about his thoughts on the future of classic concerts post-COVID19, Here is his response:It is truly hard to predict how the Covid interruption will effect concert life. Classical music was already in great difficulties even before, actually for at least 30 or 40 years, it has been in a state of declining and older audience bases. So the effect may be positive in that t will bring about radical change from the top. Or it might simply kill the business for good. I refuse to believe that, since I believe in our musical heritage and its value and validity. But the entire model needs to change--but not simply by means of catchy clichés like "diversity".NOTES BY Alan Winson See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.

Autism In Adulthood: Role Of Technology In Advocating For Quality Of Life | A Cyber Society Conversation With Becca Lory Hector

If we don't open our eyes and think about how we are all different—in so many ways—we will never truly understand that our personal quality of life and behaviors affects that of the group and society we are part of. Is technology helping diversity and inclusivity?Join this conversation with our guest, Becca Lory Hector, as she helps us open our eyes and reflect on what quality in an autistic person's life can be and how technology can play a role in improving it. Well, this, and so much more in this podcast. It is easy to believe we understand everything. Is it black or white? Good or bad? Normal or not? We put labels on things—and people—and put them in their respective bucket(s). The truth is that most of the time, we DON'T understand something, so ... yep, you guessed it, we put labels anyway—and there is a bucket for that too.As crappy of a reality that this can be, it's human nature to do this. So, how do we move beyond this?Perhaps the fact that society has been thrust into a world of isolation and separation has forced all of us to leverage technology to survive during a pandemic can help.Nearly everyone is familiar with utilizing social media, video meetings, and other collaboration technologies to stay connected with family, friends, co-workers, doctors, teachers, and more. This realization of how technology can help us connect with each other has proven extremely valuable for those in society that may not always have the means, desire, and ability to communicate in person. This is a straightforward example that we touch on as Becca shares her insights into how autistic people—namely adults—are coming together to support each other to develop and thrive in both a community of their own and as part of the greater society in which they live. Now's the time to open your eyes to the labels you've placed and the groups you've drawn lines around to better understand your role—and that of technology—in creating a quality of life that suits not only yourself but those around you.In an ideal world, we wouldn't need to have these conversations, but we are far from it at this stage of human development. We are not driven by equality, well-being for all, and a desire to embrace what is different from ourselves. We're just not, sadly.Maybe we will get there one day. But, until then, we will need to scream louder, be the change agent we can and want to be, and fight as hard as we can to make it happen. This conversation is an opportunity to learn to listen and understand instead of merely assuming. GuestBecca Lory Hector, CEO/Managing Member at Evolving Skye, LLC | Program Content Developer, NYU Steinhardt School of Culture, Education, and Human Development (@beccalorycas on Twitter)This Episode's SponsorsBlackCloak: https://itspm.ag/itspbcwebRSA Security: https://itspm.ag/itsprsawebResourcesSpectrum Women Magazine: https://www.spectrumwomen.com/Book — Spectrum Women: Walking to the Beat of Autism: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07BDQYZZQ/Becca's YouTube Channel: https://youtube.com/beccaloryhectorBlog — Autistically Yours: https://beccalory.com/blog-autistically-yours/To see and hear more The Cyber Society content on ITSPmagazine, visit:https://www.itspmagazine.com/the-cyber-societyTo see and hear more Redefining Technology stories on ITSPmagazine, visit:https://www.itspmagazine.com/redefining-technologyAre you interested in sponsoring an ITSPmagazine Channel?https://www.itspmagazine.com/podcast-series-sponsorships

In this episode, I speak with Jason Haaheim, principal timpanist with NY's Metropolitan Opera since 2013.   We discuss his fascinating journey, going from working full-time as an engineer to holding one of the most coveted position in the world.  He applied the principles of deliberate practice in his life in a way that will amaze and inspire you!  Jason's experience and insight on deliberate practice and music-making are eye opening!   We elaborate on: His unorthodox path – securing a position at the MET How he was exposed to deliberate practice What is “talent?” (Pssst!  It's not what you think!) How his playing soared once he figured out what type of practice works for him How deliberate practice is, in essence, applying the scientific method to instrumental learning How refining the technique in a scientific, methodical way, leads us to musicality and expression Why feedback is so crucial in learning and growing as an artist Why essential to be process-focused and how it impacts the end result Why it's up to you and the decision you make over the years Why it pays to be a tenacious loser What the things you can control are How the process never ends (and that's a good thing!) Why we should keep asking questions and how they make us better How his process continues in his career How results are a by-product of the process His audition preparation process – how he organized it and what it involved (have specific goals, a solid plan, record yourself, play mock auditions, get lots of feedback, etc.) How he uses Anders Ericsson's Mental Representation concept How recording ourselves transforms how we pay attention to our playing in real time How he prepares for the opera repertoire     ALL ABOUT JASON: Website: https://jasonhaaheim.com/ Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/jasonhaaheim/ Metropolitan Opera: https://www.metopera.org/ Artful Timpani Auditioning Seminar: https://steinhardt.nyu.edu/music/summer/percussionworkshops/artful_timpani_auditioning Talent is Overrated: What Really Separates World-Class Performers from Everybody Else by Geoff Colvin Peak: Secrets from the New Science of Expertise by Anders Ericsson     Jason Haaheim (pronounced HAW-heim) was appointed a Principal Timpanist of the Metropolitan Opera Orchestra in 2013.
