It's Hump Day! Sam and Emma speak with Ryan Grim, D.C. Bureau Chief at The Intercept and co-host of Counter Points, to discuss Jamaal Bowman's loss in last nights NY-16 Democratic primary, and Julian Assange's plea deal. First, Sam runs through updates on yesterday's primaries, social media disinformation policy, aid to Gaza, Oklahoma's separation of church and state, Biden's pardoning of vets convicted of having gay sex as recently as 2013, Mayor Eric Adams' questionable trips to China, and Trump-Biden polling, before parsing through some $15mln worth of reasons why George Latimer beat Jamaal Bowman, and the reactions from both candidates coming out of the race. Ryan Grim then joins, first helping to expand on the Latimer-Bowman conversation, the role AIPAC played in the battle (and where they might have gone wrong, despite their ultimate success), and how Bowman and the squad have influenced AIPAC's fight, also briefly previewing the upcoming battle facing Cori Bush in St. Louis. Next, Grim and Sam look at the recent pardoning of Julien Assange, the absurd conversation still lingering around his whistleblowing, what this development means for freedom of the press, and what to make of Assange's role in media and politics both looking back and to the future. And in the Fun Half: Sam previews tomorrow's presidential debate, including some of the major narratives the Right is pushing heading into it, talks with Malachi from Boston about the Presidential election and harm reduction, and parses through JD Vance's A+ audition for Trump's VP pick. Mehdi Hasan eviscerates Dean Phillips over voting to sanction the ICC and RELATIVES of ICC members, Mom's for Liberty continues the struggle to define “woke” without obvious bigotry, and Anthony from LA asks Sam's take on racism and reparations in Israel and the US. It's News Day Tuesday! Sam and Emma break down the biggest headlines of the day. First, they run through updates on Biden's reelection bid, the departures of Tucker and Don Lemon, new SCOTUS corruption allegations, Trump's alternate impending trials, the silencing and repression of Zooey Zephyr and her supporters, Harry Belafonte, DeSantis' floundering, and the corruption of a Florida Surgeon General. Next, Sam and Emma parse through Biden's incredibly boring reelection announcement, the rights' somehow MORE boring response to said announcement, and speculate on the Democratic primary, before diving into the role of abortion and crime in the leadup to the 2024 elections. They also dive into Tucker's final moments at Fox News, Greg Kelly's and Donald Trump's reflections on the matter, and what spurred both his and Don Lemons' departures from their respective news organizations. Wrapping up the first half, Sam and Emma cover the corruption of Joseph Ladapo, DeSantis' Florida Surgeon General, who altered key findings in a study on COVID-19 vaccine safety. And in the Fun Half: Kowalski from Nebraska dives into agricultural and environmental updates, Matt Walsh struggles to respond to a youth activist with anything but “uh, what's a woman?” and Joe Manchin goes on Hannity to denounce the evil lies of the IRA – that he was central to shaping. Jeff from New Mexico dives into the forgotten stories of the Twitter Files, Oochie Wally discusses the ignorance of the US' “Red Summer” of white supremacist uprisings, and Stephen Crowder comes out as the newest member of the “Incredibly Divorced Bigots” club, plus your calls and IMs! It's Casual Friday! Sam and Emma host Alex Pareene, Contributing Editor at the New Republic and proprietor of the AP newsletter on Substack, to round up the week in news. Alex, Emma, and Sam begin with Hannity reassuring his audience that nothing will change with the Roe v. Wade decision, because, of course, the radical left is just hysterical, and the irony of this perspective when the GOP (and Manchin) were just ranting about any legislative codification actually creating a massive imbalance in… keeping the right to abortion the same. This brings them to a problem being faced by both of the party institutions, as now that the fight against Roe has suddenly been won, nobody has a coherent plan for what to do next. Looking to the Democratic leadership, they then dive into their obsession with institutionalism, particularly when it comes to the Senate and Supreme Court, and how it blinds them from the reality that's unfolding before their eyes, as seen with Nancy Pelosi's obsession with a “strong Republican party” and endorsing anti-choice democrats, as if a majority control with a party that doesn't align on fundamental rights could achieve anything when it came to those fundamental rights. Expanding on this, they explore the countless left-wing policies that somehow are dealbreakers for a Pelosi endorsement, and how the focus on taking down progressives in primaries is a complete waste with an impending midterm where the Democrats have no message and no plan. They wrap up the interview by discussing the out-of-touch nature of the politics of Democratic leadership, Biden's transactional nature as President, and Sam and Emma touch on stoppages in both COVID and Ukraine support, Elon's falling stocks, and the GOP's refusal to look at child poverty as a genuine economic issue. And in the Fun Half: Sam and Emma discuss the Republican establishment running away from discussions on Roe v. Wade implications, and also from discussions on Rick Scott's platform, and also discussions on their OWN platform, Oochie Wally compares hosting a podcast to running World of Warcraft, Kilmeade pressures Mark Esper on why he would discuss Trump's plans to bomb Mexico, and Ryan from TN discusses the real horrors of the Roe decision's impact on miscarriages. Joe Rogan asks us to imagine gay people facing homophobia, because that's what's happening to straight kids RIGHT NOW. Sam and Emma dive into the disturbing videos of the IDF's assault on Shireen Abu Aqleh's funeral, Ronald Raygun reflects on the legacy of one Glenn Beck, and Glenn Greenwald discusses self-care tactics such as tweeting death threats, plus, your calls and IMs! Stories of the strange and supernatural have whimsically been passed down all across human history. Tales of cults, magic, demons, and fairies have been passed down in a combination of fear and wonder for generations. Come join us in our biweekly podcast where we explore the Occult in Knowledge of the Hidden.
Sam and Emma are back from the July 4th holiday with Smithsonian curator Jon Grinspan, author of his latest book The Age of Acrimony: How Americans Fought to Fix Their Democracy, 1865-1915 on the last time partisanship was the primary driver in American democracy. Grinspan, inspired by the precedence for our modern political era that he found in the Gilded Age, looks into how the post-Reconstruction era saw a crisis of democracy in the shadow of boosted political partisanship and party identification. He walks through the mass public participation in the wake of the Civil War, with politics acting as a central sphere of public life that saw campaign marches and public elections, involving – on the social level – even those without suffrage. Emma, Sam, and Jon next explore how the contentious 1977 election of Rutherford B. Hayes saw voters start to turn their back on Reconstruction policies as voter disenfranchisement starts to spring up in the South, and elites in the North rebrand politics as a private, subtle matter in order to discourage the working class, including freed Black folks and immigrants, from political involvement. They round out the interview by reflecting on the lessons for the modern era, remembering that these crises of democracy - even when clouded by partisanship, political violence, and distrust - have been worked out of before. Emma and Sam finish off the first half by discussing two big upcoming stories, including the impact of this holiday weekend on COVID rates, and the continuing Republican fight against a comprehensive infrastructure package before they chat about Donny Deutch's nightmare situation of Americans dreaming less of labor and focusing more on the quality of their lives. And in the Fun Half: Nomiki Konst joins Sam and Emma as they keep holiday workers at the Haslet, TX Walmart in their mind after their consumer's rousing performance on the 3rd, and then they enjoy Fox's Clay Travis point out how their viewers' outrage is reflective of the horrible state of politics in our country that makes us so willing to get outraged by outrageous culture war. Oochie Wally calls in to tackle last week's Crypto Fascist and racists' incessant pathologizing of any Black demographical statistic that they could use to mislead the public. Eli in the Netherlands gets the crew into a discussion of institutional schooling and alternatives, before they watch Trump finally extend a hand to the “good hardworking people” that don't pay taxes on the company car (his CFO). Then, Joanna from Queens discusses how AOC has become Tim Pool's ultimate cock block, and Noah from the Crowder Mug Club speaks on his intimate relationship with Stephen's true self and why following science is basically stupid, plus, your calls and IMs! In one of the toughest week's in recent history, Mike, Raul and Gee try to get folks minds off of recent tragedy's and discuss just how little money and wiggle room the Bears have in the off-season and make our less-than-enthusiastic Super Bowl Predictions. . . the show wraps up giving respect to one of the greatest sports athletes of our time - the never to be duplicated talents and character of the one Kobe Bean Bryant. RIP
R.I.P To the "other" LaParka. Respect to you and LaPark the former Chairman of WCW. Tessa Blanchard has "allegedly" did something worse than Hulk Hogan or anything you have heard Vince and Paul have done. Twitter isn't as on fire about it though. That won't stop us from talking about it and making our stance clear on the issue. The Miz vs CM Punk. It ain't happening as far as we know, but it's not even close who's had the better career. Brock Lesnar in the Rumble at number 1 isn't as historic as Paul Heyman advertised so far, but Bang has a remedy that could set the road to Wrestlemania on fire! All that and us wishing the best for Keith Lee in spite of his weak theme music on this week's #FBCPod BRANDING NEWS!!!! We got a logo! So that means we got merch!
