Today we are in Outback Queensland with our friend Holly Thom who we met recently on our trip to the Maranoa region. Holly was raised in the local pub which is also the local hotel, many people may not realise these are often the same place in country towns across Australia. As a teenager Holly moved to the coast to study and gained a Diploma of Nursing at the Sunshine Coast University Hospital where she graduated and went on to work in Acute Surgical and Rehabilitation for 2 years. However, the country was calling Holly back and aged 23 she became a business owner, owning part of the New Royal Hotel and motel, the local Timber Crate café and also the Surat Cabin and Caravan Park, which both Maxi and I now know are the heart of the community. Holly has a passion for people as we saw for ourselves so enjoy this chat with Holly and hear her amazing story and a glimpse into what life is like in the country.

About this episode Amy Tinning shares just how Branches Performing Arts literally branches out across the outback by bringing dance education to students in regional, rural and remote communities. Along with her fellow teacher Tammy Gordon the pair cover a combined total of 2,000km every fortnight. That is 300 students across seven towns. Hughenden, Richmond, Cloncurry, Julia Creek, Winton, Longreach and Barcaldine. Basically they teach a whopping 84 scheduled classes, and 80 private coaching sessions, to students in the Northern Territory, Outback Queensland and Northern New South Wales. Distance Dance Significantly Amy first began delivering Distance Dance, Branches' online classes, well before Covid forced us all to transition to remote learning. Subsequently Branches' Distance Dance and has been a leader in the way they have supported students and families unable to attend in-person dance classes due to pure logistics. But distance and dance has always gone hand-in-hand for Amy. As a rural kid who begged her parents to let her attend dance classes Amy inevitably sees no geographical barriers when it comes to learning dance. Creating Community Branches Performing Arts is deeply rooted in connecting dance with kids and their communities, and we are in absolute awe of their dedication to helping outback dancers' dreams come true. Indeed that is part of the reason behind Amy branching out with her Co Stars Dance Company based in Mt Isa. In this way Amy and Tammy are able to provide developing young artists with professional level performance experience and exposure to high quality dance training and artistic processes. The team attend comps, perform at various events and are able to experience the magic of performance, Amy's first love. Following Episode 10, where Kristen interviewed Sarah about her upcoming bikepacking trip in Outback Queensland, this is the post trip wrap up! Sarah talks broadly about the experience of her ten day adventure, including how her route changed from the outset and how her trip mantra became “Make good choices, there are no rules”. She talks of the kindness of strangers; gratitude for her body; the challenges of being solo in a remote, Outback environment, including water management and camping around wild dogs. Sarah also touches on the idea of "wherever you go; there you are" and the deep presence found on these endurance missions.  Sarah travelled 2000km in her van; over 600km on her bike, Celeste; hiked 43km in her Teva sandals and spent 9.5 hours on the Spirit of the Outback train to complete her loop from Emerald to Longreach and back. Sarah references her dynamo hub system on her Curve GMX+ which is an Australian built KLite set up.  For a daily breakdown and images of the trip, you can visit Sarah's Instagram account @allthegearnaeidea  The annoying popping sound made a return for this one - we're so sorry. We cover this topic in depth on this episode. What was unique about Michael's mentors was that he had different people give him totally different view points. What do you do when you have mentors that do that? Is it helpful to have such different perspectives in your ear? We discuss this at length. Finally we speak about how Martial Arts can be great for one's personal development, and why Michael has put so much effort into studying this over the years. Photo Courtesy of http://www.bouliacamelraces.com.au/ A few months ago, keen followers of Handheld Travel would have noticed I covered a camel race in the town of Maitland, NSW. What I expected would be a fun day and something to talk about has turned into a slight obsession. I had no idea the sheer number of camels that lived in Australia. I had no idea the history of camels and their impact on the development of Australia. I had no idea of the history of Afghan Cameleers and their unique history within Australian borders. After spending a day with cameleers and handlers in Maitland, I began gobbling up information about camels and particularly camel racing. The big aim of this research was to set myself up to create a radio documentary about the 2021 Boulia Camel Cup, a famed race in Outback Queensland. Of course, COVID has put everything on hold. While there are still plans to have the Cup next year, it is still too early to say how that will look. All I can say is that I still have plans to be there in 2021. As part of my research, I came across the story of Dannileah Stewart and Ronnie Callope. Despite working full time, Dannileah has been able to successfully train racing camels along with winning the 2019 Boulia Cup, the Melbourne Cup of camel racing. Dannileah's story is one of the most fascinating stories in camel racing and her love for her animals and camel racing shines through this interview. I genuinely hope this is the first step in big adventure. In what has to be the most insane story I've told yet , today's episode is the story of Jonothon Stenberg , the man who decapitated his neighbour Edward 'Ned' Kelly then took off up north, Darwin bound. On his way through Outback Queensland he spotted a poster advertising auditions for Aussie movie 'Mystery Road' , Directed by David Jowsey and starring Roy Billing , Hugo Weaving and Aaron Pederson. Deciding to try his hand at acting , it turned out he was a natural , and won the role . Unfortunately for Jonothon ( and probably fortunately for the cast and crew ) he was unable to take the role , as he had more pressing matters , such as evading police and sparking a manhunt that spanned 3 states . Although he never made it to the movies , this is a story that definitely should be turned into one ( If it does I'm keen to work on that particular script!!)
