Anne Ghesquière welcomes in Métamorphose Wim Hof, the famous "iceman". It's all about the mind, they say. What better way to illustrate this point than with the man who broke 26 records related to cold exposure? Today's guest climbed Kilimanjaro in shorts and also spent 112 minutes in a container filled with iced cubes. Challenging yourself with cold does not only improve your mental health, it also has many physical benefits. In his book, The Wim Hof Method - Activate Your Potential, Transcend your Limits, published in French by Guy Trédaniel, the "Iceman" shares his life story and the method he has put in place to enable everyone to develop an optimal mental and physical state. We investigate Oxfam's claim that “since 2020, the five richest men in the world have seen their fortunes more than double, while almost five billion people have seen their wealth fall”. With the help of Johan Norberg, Historian and Author of ideas and Felix Salmon, Financial Correspondent at Axios, we explore the figures behind the wealth of the richest and uncover what it really tells us about the world's financial markets. And Charles Kenny, senior fellow at the Centre for Global Development in Washington DC, helps us unpick why, when looking at the world's poorest people, measurements of wealth don't always tell us what we really need to know. I hope you're finding a gentle landing spot int this new year. Longtime blog readers may recall my “weeks in review” turned “months in review” turned "season in review" over the years. And, of course, there's the annual Year in Review. This reflection exercise allows me to stay accountable, set and review goals, celebrate, and note what needs adjustment. Below is a list of my year's experiences. After the top 10, they're in no particular order. There's also a brief reflection and resources to support us moving into the new year. To compile this information I reviewed my Daybook, monthly dreams, birthday exercise (here's mine from 2021), goodreads app, ballet class platforms, and photos. Needless to say, it's a process! Consider your own 2022 list. Look for patterns, wins, challenges, boundaries, and those sweet moments in between. Although this year may have been challenging, you may just rediscover some gems when you compile your own Year in Review. Oh, and here's an Instagram reel with heaps of photos from 2022. Year's Experiences Top 10 Got a new hip Hosted 30+ Coterie events including an in-person tea party Renovated the Pink Palace (my 600-sqare-foot home) Won 2nd place for Lilac Fairy in the International Adult Ballet Festival's Beginner Solo Category [Instagram reel mentioned in the podcast] Hosted Hip Tranquil Chick's 16th birthday (so. much. fun.) What Worked Well for Me in 2022? Hosting the Coterie, being off Facebook (video with tips forthcoming), trimming my offerings, full therapy practice, a bit of travel, love my office space, charity donations, home renovation, virtual private ballet sessions and group classes, new hip, memoir efforts. What Didn't Work for Me in 2022? Lack of mobility for two months, poor eating habits at times, not enough reading, challenges managing physical pain, not completing online courses, didn't create as much content as I wanted to, didn't complete memoir book proposal. What Did I Learn About Myself Last Year? I can handle a lot of discomfort (hip), I can win an award at a ballet competition, how much I love ballet (and struggle), how grateful I am for my tiny pink home and office, I made many more in person connections. How Did My Goals for 2022 Unfold? I achieved more than half of the Year's Dreams list in my Daybook such as releasing 25 podcasts, getting a new hip, nurturing the Coterie, adding video to my podcast interviews and created more Tea with Kimberly's, streamlining my website (thanks Mara!), setting up solid business bookkeeping, giving a proud performance of Lilac Fairy, remodeling chez moi, and taking trips to Paris. A few that I didn't meet and are still on my radar: read 48 books, complete my memoir proposal, solid pirouettes at the barre and in the center, daily salad, create e-courses. My 2023 Year's Dreams: get memoir proposal to my agent, healthy pugs, host 600th podcast event (save the date: February 20), send two monthly love notes (sign up here), release two monthly podcasts, increase color on my plate and eat more veggies/whole foods (less sugar—my life's struggle), carve out more family time, learn and perform Prelude from Les Sylphides at the International Adult Ballet Festival, celebrate my 50th birthday in a meaningful way, get back onto pointe, nurture my Coterie loves, incorporate more play and relaxation time (ongoing challenge), create a few micro-courses (any requests?), finish a few e-courses I've signed up for, donate to support orangutans, pigs, and pugs, create AM writing time, design spring #balletcore TDJ clothing collection, declutter. A Few of My Favorite Reads: The Idea of You by Robinne Lee, Personality Isn't Permanent by Benjamin Hardy, Free Time by Jenny Blake, Toxic Positivity by Whitney Goodman A Few of My Favorite Shows: White Lotus, Emily in Paris, Fleishman is in Trouble, The Patient A Few of My Favorite Songs: All things Harry Styles especially Falling and Sign of the Times Overall 2022 was a solid year. Ballet continued to be a dominate presence as did my therapy practice, the Coterie, and pug caregiving. I see this continuing into the new year and hope to make more space to write in my journal, create content for you, sip tea with friends, cuddle pugs, and read fireside {or by candlelight}. I'm still finalizing my word/theme for 2023 and feel it bubbling up inside. What about you? May 2023 be filled with time and space for what matters most to you! Dr. Jan Kirschner has maintained a successful wellness chiropractic practice for 29 years. The “rules” he developed for success in chiropractic school have been passed on to students at numerous institutions for generations. Dr. Kirschner was a founding board member of the Association for Network Care, and an international teaching staff member for Wise World Seminars, during which time he developed the Page One seminar as a way for students and doctors to master fundamental skills that were beginning to disappear from chiropractic curricula. He has taught Page One and his recently created Page Two seminars in Australia, Europe, Bali and the United States. Prior to becoming a chiropractor, Dr. Kirschner was a comedy writer and performer, appearing in venues such as HBO, the Olympic Arts Festival in Los Angeles and the Goodman Theater in Chicago. Dr. Kirschner is the proud father of three children, all of whom were born at home, adjusted within minutes of their births, and have solely utilized chiropractic care to lead healthy lives. Living the Farm Sanctuary Life with Gene Baur. Learn the five tenets of living the Farm Sanctuary life, his story from Hollywood to Hilda, how Farm Sanctuary found their first spot in Watkins Glen, New York, and how he stays motivated as an activist. Featured Guest: Gene Baur has been hailed as “the conscience of the food movement” by Time magazine. Since the mid-1980s, he has traveled extensively, campaigning to raise awareness about the abuses of industrialized factory farming and our system of cheap food production. A pioneer in the field of undercover investigations, Gene has visited hundreds of farms, stockyards, and slaughterhouses, documenting the deplorable conditions that exist. His pictures and videos exposing factory farming cruelties have aired nationally and internationally, educating millions about the plight of modern farm animals. Gene has also testified in courts and before local, state, and federal legislative bodies, advocating for better conditions for farm animals. His most important achievements include winning the first-ever cruelty conviction at a U.S. stockyard and introducing the first U.S. laws to prohibit cruel farming confinement methods in Florida, Arizona, and California. His efforts have been covered by top news organizations, including The New York Times, Los Angeles Times, Chicago Tribune, and The Wall Street Journal. Gene has published two bestsellers, Farm Sanctuary: Changing Hearts and Minds About Animals and Food (Scribner, 2008) and Living the Farm Sanctuary Life (Rodale, 2015), which he co-authored with Forks Over Knives author Gene Stone. Through his writing and his international speaking engagements, Gene provides simple actionable solutions coupled with a compassion-first approach to help us be the change we wish to see in treatment toward animals and in our food system. Gene began his activist career selling veggie hotdogs out of a VW van at Grateful Dead concerts to fund farm animal rescues. Today, he serves as president of Farm Sanctuary, the nation’s leading farm animal protection organization, with shelters in New York and California. Providing rescue, refuge, and adoption for hundreds of farm animals each year, Farm Sanctuary shelters enable visitors to connect with farm animals as emotional, intelligent individuals. Gene believes these animals stand as ambassadors for the billions of factory farm animals who have no voice, and he has dedicated his career to advocating on their behalf. An interview with Dana Ellyn on Artistic Activism. Hear her transition from suburban wife to full-time artist, advice to aspiring artists, peek into her exhibit Speciesism, and learn the art history-inspired story behind my new pig painting. Featured Guest Dana Ellyn is a DC resident and full-time painter who lives and paints in her studio in a subsidized artist housing unit in downtown Washington DC. Ellyn committed herself to full-time status in 2002 when she decided to leave her corporate job and pursue painting. Her work is exemplified by a risk-taking vision, strong content, and colorful critiques of social norms. Ellyn's style sits on the fence between social realism and expressionism. Having spent her childhood and college years honing her skills and striving to be technically correct, during the past 12 years she has tasked herself with unlearning those restrictive habits. Ellyn strives to infuse more emotion and meaning in to each new painting she creates. Ellyn's paintings have stories to tell and opinions to profess. She delivers hard slaps to myths of all kinds - from religion, to politics to what it means to be a woman. Ellyn's goal is to employ humor when holding a subject up to her artistic scrutiny. But, humor is as subjective as art and Ellyn's brand of humor has tended to be a polarizing factor in her art. Love it or hate it, she definitely starts a dialogue. From childhood until about the age of 30, Ellyn was quiet and reserved. She has now found her voice and she is making up for lost time. The Last Pig Part II with Bob Comis. Hear his journey from pig farmer to vegetable grower and the challenges that came with the transition. Learn the truth about "humane" meat and slaughter and what he means when he says "it's about emotions, not logic." Featured Guest: Bob Comis For the first few decades of his life, Bob Comis was oblivious to the suffering of non-human (and human) animals. Thanks to the courage and bravery of undercover investigators who secretly capture and share footage of the twin horrors of factory farming and industrial slaughter, Bob was roused from his ignorance. He became a vegan, but quickly failed. Then he became a humane pig farmer, and quickly succeeded. He raised pigs for slaughter for ten years, until one day in January, 2014 a powerful vibration of empathy, compassion, and love overwhelmed him, and with the strength of the universal goodness that is our unfettered state of being behind him, he decided to quit pig farming, start a vegetable farm, and become a vegetarian (vegan, in January 2015). Today, when Bob pulls a beet out of the ground, or unearths a brilliant cluster of potatoes he is able to be fully present, which is very much the opposite of his experience when he farmed pigs, which he did from a distance, divorced from the moment, disconnected from himself.
