In today's episode of The Halloween Podcast, host Lyle Perez takes us through the haunted corners of Virginia, a state rich in American history and ghostly legends. From the infamous battlefields of the Civil War to eerie mansions and mysterious bridges, Virginia's haunted sites reveal stories of lingering spirits and tragic pasts. Join us as we uncover 10 of the most haunted locations in the Old Dominion, where Confederate soldiers, ghostly nurses, and lost lovers are said to roam. Featured Locations: St. Albans Sanatorium 6248 University Park Dr, Radford, VA 24141 Originally an all-boys' school before its conversion to a mental hospital in the early 20th century, St. Albans has become one of Virginia's most infamous paranormal sites. Known for harsh experimental treatments, the sanatorium is said to be haunted by the spirits of former patients. The basement is particularly eerie, where visitors report hearing disembodied whispers, feeling phantom touches, and seeing shadowy figures. Paranormal investigators frequently capture EVP recordings, especially near the old hydrotherapy room, where many experienced immense suffering. Hollywood Cemetery 412 S Cherry St, Richmond, VA 23220 Established in 1847, Hollywood Cemetery is the eternal resting place of Confederate soldiers, U.S. presidents, and the infamous “Richmond Vampire.” The legend of the vampire centers on the tomb of W.W. Poole, from which strange noises are said to emanate at night. Visitors have reported seeing ghostly soldiers, feeling chills near the Confederate burial grounds, and even catching glimpses of General Robert E. Lee, his figure silently wandering the cemetery grounds as if reliving his past. The Exchange Hotel 400 S Main St, Gordonsville, VA 22942 The Exchange Hotel became a Civil War hospital, treating thousands of soldiers. With its storied past, it's no surprise that ghostly nurses are reportedly seen tending to invisible patients. In the basement, which once served as a morgue, visitors have heard eerie moaning and footsteps echoing through the otherwise empty halls. The ghost of a Confederate soldier is a frequent sight, believed to be lingering, perhaps waiting to be reunited with lost comrades. Bacon's Castle 465 Bacon's Castle Trail, Surry, VA 23883 Constructed in 1665, Bacon's Castle has borne witness to rebellions, family feuds, and ghostly occurrences. Visitors report encounters with a woman in colonial clothing, believed to be Arthur Allen's wife. Paranormal investigators have witnessed furniture moving on its own and heard laughter in empty rooms. The house is a frequent site for ghost tours, with guides sharing tales of sudden chills, strange lights, and objects shifting mysteriously. The Martha Washington Inn & Spa 150 W Main St, Abingdon, VA 24210 Once a Civil War hospital, the Martha Washington Inn has its share of restless spirits. A particularly famous legend involves the spirit of a young nurse, known as the “Yankee Sweetheart,” who fell in love with a Union soldier. Guests report hearing her soft footsteps in the halls and glimpsing her shadow near the spot where her beloved died. Other ghostly sightings include Confederate soldiers and eerie bloodstains that appear on the floors before mysteriously vanishing. Gadsby's Tavern Museum 138 N Royal St, Alexandria, VA 22314 Dating back to the 18th century, Gadsby's Tavern is haunted by the mysterious “Female Stranger,” who arrived gravely ill and, upon her death, requested her identity remain secret. Seen frequently in Room 8, her ghostly figure leaves cold spots and an eerie sensation for those who venture close. Visitors and staff alike have also reported phantom footsteps echoing through the tavern's historic rooms. Sailor's Creek Battlefield Historic State Park 6541 Saylers Creek Rd, Rice, VA 23966 The bloody Battle of Sailor's Creek saw nearly 25% of General Robert E. Lee's army fall. Visitors report ghostly figures wandering the battlefield at dusk, and cold spots are often felt around the Overton-Hillsman Farmhouse, which served as a makeshift hospital. The battlefield is known for mysterious cries and the faint sound of cannon fire, as if the battle is replaying for eternity. The Public Hospital 325 W Francis St, Williamsburg, VA 23185 Established in 1773, the Public Hospital for Persons of Insane and Disordered Minds is the oldest psychiatric hospital in the U.S. Shadows, sudden cold chills, and unsettling whispers haunt the halls. Visitors report feeling phantom touches and hearing footsteps in rooms long since abandoned, with occasional sightings of patients in old-fashioned hospital gowns. Swannanoa Palace 497 Swannanoa Ln, Afton, VA 22920 This grand estate, built as a testament to love, is haunted by the ghost of Sallie Dooley, who is often seen near her stained-glass portrait. Visitors feel sudden chills and see objects move on their own, especially around Sallie's favorite rooms. Paranormal investigators have captured EVPs and other strange occurrences, making Swannanoa a popular stop for thrill-seekers. Bunny Man Bridge Colchester Overpass, Clifton, VA 20124 The tale of Bunny Man Bridge is one of Virginia's most chilling urban legends. Locals report seeing a man dressed in a bunny suit wielding an axe near the bridge, especially on Halloween. Some say he's the spirit of an escaped convict who haunts the bridge, while others claim the presence is something darker. Witnesses often hear unsettling noises like screams and whispers, making Bunny Man Bridge a must-visit for those seeking a real scare. He was seen at the collapse of the Church Hill Tunnel. A muscular figure with skin hanging from his frame and jagged teeth was seen hunched over another body. This figure then ran away and hid in the Pool mausoleum. Pool was also kicked out of England for being a vampire. HORSEFLY CHRONICLES RADIO IS SPONSORED BY CARNATION Long ago Vanessa Hogle was stuck. Knee deep in two jobs, a dead end relationship and no positive viewpoint regarding the future. Knowing something had to change she drew inspiration from her past and began to forge a new life for herself and her son. She had been involved in the paranormal community before and knew that's where she had to start. A former fellow investigator, had started up a publishing company and asked her to write about her experiences. Having "remote viewed" for a previous investigative team, and consulted for The "Leave or Die" episode of The Haunted, on Animal Planet, Vanessa had more than enough material to write a book. Subsequently fulfilling her lifelong dream of becoming an author. Major life changes were happening, at this time, forcing Vanessa to re-access her life. Knowing there was nowhere to go but up, she let go of all that no longer supported her. Writing her first book, Soulscapes, which was released April 28th of 2015 and ending a six year dead end relationship, acted as a catalyst forcing her to come out of her shell and accept who she really was. It wasn't long before she began to network with like-minded individuals all over the world. Gaining insight, and experience, she set out to tell her story. Her para-biography, Giving up the Ghost, release date August 27th of 2015 laid it all out for the world to see. The struggles, the heartache, the confusion of growing up with certain gifts. During this time word of what Vanessa could do had gotten around. She began reading, and remote viewing, for multiple teams in the United States and abroad. Even co-hosting her own show, Edge of the Rabbit Hole for over 4 years. She also began to make numerous appearances on blogtalk radio, multiple podcast and You Tube. Her appearances include Beyond The Strange, Miami Ghost Chronicles, Stories of the Supernatural, multiple appearances on Spaced Out Radio, Necromancer Live, Paranormal Collaboration, Paranormal King, multiple appearances on Paranormal Connection Radio, Our Paranormal Stories and extensive appearances on Paranormal Zone TV. Her abilities and accomplishments have also been written about in Campus Ghost of Norman and Entertainment 2Morrow as well as KFOR news, in Oklahoma, who did a special segment "Is This a Great State or What?" on Vanessa. Through these shows, and social media, Vanessa has been able...in the last four years... to travel the world investigating and meeting those whom she has helped, remotely. Her travels have taken her to New Orleans, for Haunted Bourbon Paracon where, upon arriving, she was immediately contacted to do a special segment for the local news station 4WWL in regards to the Abita Springs Bakery. She has also investigated in Alton, Illinois at the Mineral Springs Hotel, Easton, PA at the Horsefly Chronicles House. Staten Island, NY and NJ for the Cropsey case, and documentary about the disappearance of Holly Ann Hughes. In West Virginia at Moundsville State Prison. In Virginia at multiple private residences, Saylors Creek Battlefield, cabin on 360 and Hollywood Cemetery. In Sheffield, England, at The Old Queens Head...where the head of programming of History UK, Dom Wilkins, drove from London to investigate with her. Grace Dieu Priory in Sheffield, England. Hellfire Caves in England. Whitby hostel/Abbey, in Whitby England. Mary Kings Close in Edinburgh, Scotland. City Center in Glasgow, Scotland. Private Lodging in Edinburgh, Scotland. Hellfire Club in Dublin, Ireland. Blarney Castle in Cork, Ireland. Ross Castle in Killarney, Ireland. Muckross Abbey, Co Kerry, Ireland. The Ambassador Hotel in Cork, Ireland, Morrigans cave, Spelmans motel, Tuam, Moore Hall, Leap Castle, Kilmanheim Gaol, Wicklow Goal and many more. Not all of these are true investigations but, as a sensitive, Vanessa is able to pick up on activity regardless and document. She took many of these experiences and put them in a third book called, Walking with Ghosts...release date September 25th 2017. Vanessa went on to write Rebel Witch in June 2019, Diary of a Psychic Loser Magnet in June 2020, Ghosts Abroad Ireland in February 2021 and They Would Have Burned Me in July 2022. What The Soul Knows has a projected release date of March 2023. Today's interview is with Marty Key. Marty is the owner of Steady Sounds, a record store which stood here in Richmond, VA, and became a fixture of Richmond culture in the 2010s. And also, Marty is a musician, starting out as the frontman for the Richmond Punk Group Bad Guy Reaction in the 1990s, and later, playing bass for a whole host of bands, from Bratmobile, to Ted Leo and the Pharmacists, Young Pioneers, and Live from Hollywood Cemetery. Music seems to play a big part in his life, so it was great to talk with him, and get his thoughts on Richmond, the history of some of these bands, and the history of Steady Sounds.

Good morning, RVA! It’s 40 °F, and it’s cold again. Today you can expect highs in the 50s, a bunch of clouds, and maybe some rain this evening. Actually, there’s a decent chance for rain most days this week.Water coolerAs of this morning, the Virginia Department of Health reports 1,173 new positive cases of the coronavirus in the Commonwealthand 34 new deaths as a result of the virus. VDH reports 150 new cases in and around Richmond (Chesterfield: 62, Henrico: 53, and Richmond: 35). Since this pandemic began, 1,169 people have died in the Richmond region. On March 14th, 2020 I started keeping my spreadsheet of coronavirus cases and have continued to do so every single day for an entire year. That’s bananas, and I’m impressed with myself, but I do really need to figure out what my metrics are for wrapping up this project. The COVID Tracking Project, which was part of The Atlantic, shut down on the 11th. Maybe I should follow suit once the COVID-19 numbers drop to flu-like levels? Something to noodle on!Over on the vaccine side of things, there’s still plenty of interesting stuff to consider, though. Last week, for the second week in a row, the region hit its newish Stupid Math Goal of administering 37,000 vaccines. Henrico Supervisor Tyrone Nelson said on Twitter that the region vaccinated 12,500 people just between Thursday and Saturday. That’s impressive and great. Also great: GRTC has partnered with the Richmond and Henrico Health Districts to provide free, on-demand trips to vaccination appointments for residents they identify with transportation barriers during ongoing community outreach. You can learn more about what that community outreach looks like in this piece from the Richmond Times-Dispatch’s Sabrina Moreno about how community health workers have helped Richmond’s Latino communities throughout this pandemic. And then, not great: Software continues to stymie the vaccine rollout in Richmond and beyond. Please take a minute to read this piece in the New York Times all about the headaches caused by PrepMod’s busted appointment registration platform. When addressing the fact that anyone can share a PrepMod link—a link to register for an actual vaccination appointment—with their friends, family, and to the randos on Facebook, a PrepMod spokesperson had this to say: “That’s not a problem with our system. That’s a problem with people who should be responsible.” Yikes. Blaming users for issues with software is never a good look—especially when those users are anxious, frustrated people trying to get a life-saving vaccine.Tonight, perhaps, the RPS school board will vote on moving the District to a year-round school calendar. The Superintendent has put together another slide deck explaining the particulars of the proposal, which now includes the updated results of the parent/caregiver and teacher/staff surveys. Those data are now disaggregated by race, income, students with IEPs, and English learners. Here’s the top-line takeaway: “With over 4,600 family responses and over 1,800 staff responses, our calendar survey indicates that a plurality of both stakeholder groups are ‘comfortable’ or ‘very comfortable’ with the proposed calendar, as is every subgroup (race, economic status, IEP status, and English Learner status).” We’ll see how that translates into votes tonight, though. Tune in at 6:00 PM on the Richmond Public Schools Facebook page, and read this piece by Kenya Hunter in the Richmond Times-Dispatch for some more details.Well this is unexpected! The RTD’s Chris Suarez reports that GRTC’s route #111–Chesterfield’s only local service route—“is meeting GRTC’s ridership expectations despite the pandemic, exceeding a daily average of 140 rides during the week.” Not only that, but, “After decades of limiting bus service to only a few rush-hour commuter routes, the county is now looking to run more buses and regular routes to low-income communities with limited transportation options, to foster growth and redevelopment in aging suburban highway corridors.” Whoa! Who knew that putting decent transit along a corridor full of people and stuff would result in people riding transit to stuff!I don’t know what this is all about, but NBC12 reports that someone toppled a bunch of gravestones at Hollywood Cemetery over the weekend. It’s a big enough deal that Mayor Stoney released this statement: “This weekend’s desecration at Hollywood Cemetery is morally wrong. Disturbing final resting places is contemptible, criminal and will not be tolerated.”In sports news, five men’s basketball teams from Virginia (VCU, UVA, Virginia Tech, Liberty, and Norfolk State) made it to the NCAA tournament—this despite COVID-19’s best attempt at ruining the postseason for a whole lot of folks. I mean, really, it’s despite everyone’s better judgment on doing indoor sports at all, but, whatever. Anyway, the Bracket is set, and you’ve got just a couple of days to get yours filled out. The clock is ticking! This morning’s patron longreadAmerica Is Not Made for People Who PeeSubmitted by Patron Lisa. Remember when we almost had a public bathroom as part of the Monroe Park redesign? It’s disappointing how few places we have to pee downtown—unless you buy something. In the 19th century, the United States did set up public toilets in many cities. They were often called public urinals, abbreviated as P.U. (this may be part of the origin of “P.U.” to mean something that stinks, although there are competing theories). In the early 20th century, these were supplemented by “comfort stations” for men and women alike, but most closed in waves of cost-cutting over the years. That’s partly because this is a class issue. Power brokers who decide on infrastructure priorities can find a restaurant to duck into, while that is less true of a Black teenage boy and utterly untrue of an unwashed homeless person with a shopping cart.If you’d like your longread to show up here, go chip in a couple bucks on the ol’ Patreon.Picture of the DayBaby goats: So cute! Five short years ago Vanessa Hogle was stuck. Knee deep in two jobs, a dead end relationship and no positive viewpoint regarding the future. Knowing something had to change she drew inspiration from her past and began to forge a new life for herself and her son. She had been involved in the paranormal community before and knew that's where she had to start. A friend, and former fellow investigator, had started up a publishing company and asked her to write about her experiences. Having "remote viewed" for his previous investigative team, and consulted for the "Leave or Die" episode of The Haunted, on Animal Planet, Vanessa had more than enough material to write a book, subsequently fulfilling her lifelong dream of becoming an author. Major life changes were happening, at this time, forcing Vanessa to reassess her life. Knowing there was nowhere to go but up, she let go of all that no longer supported her. Writing a book, "Soulscapes", which was released April 28th of 2015 and ending a six year dead end relationship, acted as a catalyst forcing her to come out of her shell and accept who she really is. It wasn't long before she began to network with like-minded individuals all over the world. Gaining insight, and experience, she set out to tell her story. Her para-biography, "Giving up the Ghost", release date August 27th of 2015 laid it all out for the world to see. The struggles, the heartache, the confusion of growing up with certain gifts. During this time word of what Vanessa could do had gotten around. She began reading, and remote viewing, for multiple teams in the United States and abroad. Her abilities and accomplishments have also been written about in Campus Ghost of Norman and Entertainment 2Morrow. Through these shows, and social media, Vanessa has been able,in the last four years, to travel the world investigating and meeting those whom she has helped, remotely. In Sheffield, England, at The Old Queens Head, where the head of programming of History UK, Dom Wilkins, drove from London to investigate with her. Grace Dieu Priory in Sheffield, England. Hellfire Caves in England. Whitby hostel/Abbey, in Whitby England. Mary Kings Close in Edinburgh, Scotland. City Center in Glasgow, Scotland. Private Lodging in Edinburgh, Scotland. Hellfire Club in Dublin, Ireland. Blarney Castle in Cork, Ireland. Ross Castle in Killarney, Ireland. Muckross Abbey, Co Kerry, Ireland. The Ambassador Hotel in Cork, Ireland and many more. Not all of these are true investigations but, as a sensitive, Vanessa is able to pick up on activity regardless and document. She took many of these experiences and put them in a third book called, "Walking with Ghosts", release date September 25th 2017. All three of Vanessa's books have spent multiple weeks on the Amazon Best sellers list, in multiple genres ranging from the paranormal to self help to travel and exploration. Vanessa has recently completed nearly 5 years on a very successful You Tube show titled "Edge of the Rabbit Hole" with her publisher, Mike Ricksecker. She has also been published in four books, other than her own, that are compilations of ghost stories called "Encounters with the Paranormal" Volumes 1,2,3 and 4. Her fourth release, "Rebel Witch: A Memoir" was released June 25, 2019. Vanessa has also worked on a documentary in Ireland. There in July 2019, she was granted access to locations mainstream media, and better known investigators, are unable to obtain permission to enter. This has produced a series that is available on Amazon Prime Video titled "Hidden Gems Ireland" and has also recieved overwhelming reviews. Always finding new ways to better herself, and her family's future, Vanessa has also drawn upon her more artistic abilities and has established herself as a commissioned artist, showing publicly at Loyola University, Chicago, in September 2018. In January of 2019, she founded Perfect Trust Productions LLC and recruited trusted friend and investigator, Gwen Clapper. By January of 2020, Vanessa was named as the newest member of Beyond Perception Investigators. A paranormal team whom she had worked extensively with for several years. With over 400 investigations under her belt, her books and art, Vanessa is proving there are no limits too high to reach. She has done this all while raising a son and holding down 2 jobs!
Good morning, RVA! It’s 58 °F, and a little rainy. You can expect temperatures to stay right about where they are for most of the day and for sunny skies to return later this afternoon.Water coolerAs of this morning, the Virginia Department of Health reports 2,117↗️ new positive cases of the coronavirus in the Commonwealth and 0↗️ new deaths as a result of the virus. VDH reports 219↗️ new cases in and around Richmond (Chesterfield: 77, Henrico: 79, and Richmond: 63). Since this pandemic began, 449 people have died in the Richmond region. VDH has reported over 2,000 new cases for six of the last seven days, and the seven-day average of new cases now sits at 2,262. The graph of new cases has gone full hockey stick, y’all—with cases dramatically increasing both statewide and in all of the Commonwealth’s regions. As for schools, VDH’s K–12 Schools Reporting Outbreaks of COVID-19 dashboard shows three outbreaks in Chesterfield (at Al Madina School of Richmond, Bon Air Elementary, and O.B Gates Elementary), VCU reports 30 active cases, and UR reported 21 new cases at the end of last week. Abby Church at the Richmond Times-Dispatch has a good look at how a few families in Hanover are wrestling with the decision to send their kids back to in-person instruction or keep them home for virtual learning. Church says that 1,236 Hanover families hope to return next semester and only 186 families want to switch out back to virtual learning. I know so much of the focus over the last couple of weeks has been on the upcoming Thanksgiving holiday—when folks will travel, poke holes in their bubbles, and spread the disease like gravy over an entire plate of startchy side dishes. I think, though, given the numbers, now’s a good time to reevaluate your household’s general safety procedures. Today’s coronacontext looks a lot different than it did in the summer, and if you’re still doing summertime things, it might be worth thinking about layering on a few more precautions for you and yours. The Richmond Police Department reports that a pedestrian was hit and killed by a driver on the 2600 block of Hull Street. Here’s RPD’s (victim-blamey) description of what happened: “At approximately 8:50 p.m. [on Friday], an adult male pedestrian was crossing the road in the 2600 block of Hull Street when he appeared to have fallen. He was lying in the street and was struck by a vehicle heading east on Hull Street.” I don’t know any more of the details, but I do know that the intersection of Hull and Mildo and E. Clopton is big and weird. I also don’t know if this already happens or what, but every time someone dies using our streets the City should conduct an analysis of the area and rapidly deploy temporary infrastructure. Does this intersection need traffic calming? Better lighting? Curb extension to slow turning? Longer pedestrian signal timing? All of those (maybe even the lighting!) could be quickly implemented with cheap materials to make the area safer for people.Mike Platania at Richmond BizSense says a developer plans to build 85 apartments on the 1100 block of Hull Street. As more and more stuff—restaurants, retail, residential—comes to this part of town, we’re gonna need more and better public transit. We’ve already got a couple really solid buses nearby, but I think we need to figure out how to add some bus lanes to Hull Street ASAP.Alonzo Small at WRIC says that a John Tyler Community College task force has recommended renaming the community college. Tyler was a slaveholder, sided with the Confederacy, and sat in the Confederate House of Representatives. I enjoy this quote from Wikipedia: “Some scholars have praised Tyler’s political resolve, but historians have generally given his presidency a low ranking.” He’s buried in Hollywood Cemetery if, after that glowing review, you want to go check out his final resting place. We’ll learn about possible new names for the community college in March.Richmond Magazine’s photographer Jay Paul has put together his 2020 in Photos, and, dang, a lot has happened over the past 11 months. Remember when they imploded the old Dominion building and it was, like, second-page news?Your moment of whimsy: Video of a hot air balloon (intentionally) landing in a Henrico suburb. I do sympathize with working-class people who genuinely love their dogs and who feel overlooked and overpowered by the currents of political change. And selfishly I feel sad that I’ll probably never have another dog like Vesper; I so love the bony ridge of her spine, the way her teeth chatter when she gets excited, the skin that clings to the cartilage between her eyes, softened by so many hands like an ancient piece of pottery. I don’t know if she was happier in the starting block at the track or tucked into her monogrammed bed here with me, but I’m open to the possibility that it was the former. If you’d like your longread to show up here, go chip in a couple bucks on the ol’ Patreon.

It told the stories of rose historians and rustlers, who visited old homes and cemeteries, collecting stories and cuttings. She dreamed, at that time, that she might become one of them. And, she did. Connie works at Hollywood Cemetery in Richmond, Va, to manage the rose collection. Hollywood was designed in 1847 specifically to be a garden cemetery. Garden cemeteries became popular starting in the mid-1800’s, as combination cemeteries, gardens, and public parks. Find Connie on Instagram HERE. A rich part of Virginia's history involves the Hollywood Cemetery in Richmond. Hollywood Cemetery is where many Civil War veterans are buried as well as three presidents. The dead aren't the only residents who occupy the cemetery. Legend says the Richmond Vampire roams the grounds.
Vanderpump Rules’ Stassi and Beau are officially tying the knot and we have a lot of feelings about it! Beau asked Stassi (and her Dark Passenger) to be his wife on July 31 at the Hollywood Cemetery. After saying “yes,” the couple headed to Lisa Vanderpump’s Villa Rosa to celebrate the joyous occasion. LVP was so thrilled by the engagement, she even switched roles with Stassi and served her food (a “one-time thing,” apparently)! Congratulations to Stassi and Beau, we can’t wait to learn more about your future wedding. Hollywood Cemetery is one of the most popular attractions in Richmond, Virginia. There are many urban legends that come from this beautiful cemetery. One of those is of Dimmock's Pyramid and the Confederate soldiers that are buried there. The Iron Dog of Hollywood also is an urban legend of the cemetery. This dog is said to protect a child's grave there and many people say that it even moves as passers by move. Give us a like and a great review anywhere you listen to podcasts. 16.12.18 / 15:57 / 412 South Cherry Street / Confederate Memorial At Hollywood Cemetery / This recording was taken on a sunny day at the foot of the 90-foot tall stone pyramid memorializing the 18,000 Confederates buried in Hollywood Cemetery / 50 years older than Evergreen Cemetery, Hollywood is just as spectacular as when it was designed in 1847 / In the recording, several cars are heard slowly passing on the paved roads that guide visitors through the deliberately manicured cemetery / The distant rumble is from the James River, which runs adjacent. Hollywood’s first black Oscar-winner, Hattie McDaniel, dies. Very few African American actresses have been nominated for Academy Awards, even today. The second black woman to win an Oscar was Whoopi Goldberg in 1990 for her supporting role in the movie Ghost. The first was Hattie McDaniel, who was born June 10, 1895 in Wichita, Kansas. She began her career by working beside other blacks in the limited roles that tent shows and vaudeville allowed. After a stint as a radio singer, she moved to Hollywood to build an impressive movie career. Even though movie producers withheld prime roles from blacks at the time, the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People saw fit to criticize McDaniel for playing characters that perpetuated black stereotypes. Ironically, it was her role as Mammy in the legendary 1939 movie Gone with the Wind that made her the first African American woman to win an Academy Award. Despite her prominent place in history, McDaniel faced discrimination for the color of her skin. During the Academy Awards ceremony at the Coconut Grove night club in the famous Ambassador Hotel, officials made McDaniel sit at the back alone. Before her death from breast cancer on October 26, 1952, she’d racked up 100 movie credits to her name. Her desire to be buried in the Hollywood Cemetery with other movie stars was denied by the owner Jules Roth, because she was black. In 1999, the new owner of the cemetery, Tyler Cassidy, offered to move her remains, but her family declined. Instead Tyler honoured McDaniel with a large cenotaph which overlooks the lake. On July 13, 2017, Mary Lynn Bayliss will delivered a Banner Lecture entitled “The Dooleys of Richmond: Two Generations of an Irish Immigrant Family in the Old and New South.” Two weeks after their wedding in Alexandria, Virginia, Irish Immigrants John and Sarah Dooley were at home in Richmond when John’s first advertisement for his hat manufacturing business appeared in a Richmond newspaper. Five years later, when John had become one of Richmond’s prominent residents, their second son, James Henry Dooley, destined to become a lawyer and one of the city’s great philanthropists, was born. The story of his family and their devotion to the city and the South, The Dooleys of Richmond sheds new light on the experience of Irish immigrants in the urban South before, during and after the Civil War. James Henry Dooley served three terms in the Virginia House of Delegates before becoming a key figure in the development of the industries and infrastructure of the New South. Maymont, the Gilded Age estate he and his wife created and left to the city of Richmond as a museum and park, is only one of their many gifts to the city. Dr. Mary Lynn Bayliss has published articles in Virginia Cavalcade, The Richmond Quarterly, the Richmond Times-Dispatch, the Dictionary of Virginia Biography, and Encyclopedia Virginia. She is the author of The Dooleys of Richmond: Two Generations of an Irish Immigrant Family in the Old and New South. This lecture is cosponsored with Friends of Hollywood Cemetery.
There is one absolute for all human beings and that is that we all will die. Throughout history, humans have disposed of and honored their dead in various ways. Burying the dead and marking their resting place has been the most popular and it has carried over to our modern era. Cemeteries have become a record of history for towns. Who lived here? When did they die? Why did they die? Was there a plague, a war, a natural disaster that devastated the population? Some of the interred at times wander from their resting places. There are tales of specters roaming about the tombstones in certain graveyards. Weird lights and mists have been photographed. On this episode, we have four cemeteries that seem to have unexplained activity. Those cemeteries are the Silver Terrace Cemetery in Virginia City, Nevada, which is actually divided into eleven separate cemeteries, Union Cemetery in Easton, Connecticut, Old Quaker Cemetery in Camden, South Carolina and Hollywood Cemetery in Richmond, Virginia. The combined histories of these graveyards covers the 1600s, 1700s and 1800s. Every class is found in these cemeteries and each has its own legends and hauntings. On February 5 at noon, John O. Peters, author of "From Marshall to Moussaoui: Federal Justice in the Eastern District of Virginia," was interviewed by The Honorable Henry E. Hudson, Judge of the U.S. District Court of the Eastern District of Virginia, on the fascinating stories in Peters's book. The U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of Virginia has, arguably, the most interesting and important history of any trial jurisdiction in the country, state or federal. The Honorable Henry E. Hudson, Judge of the U.S. District Court for the Eastern District, will interview John O. Peters, author of From Marshall to Moussaoui: Federal Justice in the Eastern District of Virginia, who will explain what makes this such a great story. Peters will discuss the role of Chief Justice John Marshall, who sat on the bench of this court for thirty-four years as a trial judge, including the trial of Aaron Burr for treason. Other topics will include the court's role during the Civil War and Reconstruction; the trials of some of America's most notorious spies and terrorists, culminating with the trial of Zacharias Moussaoui; more than twenty years of school desegregation litigation that changed the face of America and Virginia’s way of life; and a colorful admiralty jurisdiction that has seen cases related to pirates, privateers, prize ships, the Titanic, and Spanish gold. John O. Peters, a former commercial litigator who appeared before the U.S. District Court for the Eastern District on numerous occasions, began writing about courts, judges, and lawyers in 1969 with the publication of Courts of the Richmond Area—A Primer. His other books include Virginia’s Historic Courthouses (1995), Richmond’s Hollywood Cemetery (2010), and From Marshall to Moussaoui: Federal Justice in the Eastern District of Virginia (2013). U.S. District Judge Henry E. Hudson started his legal career as an assistant commonwealth’s attorney for Arlington. During his tenure in public service, he has served as the U.S. attorney for the Eastern District of Virginia, director of the U.S. Marshal Service, and as a circuit court judge for Fairfax County. Judge Hudson received his commission as a federal district judge in August 2002 and sits in the Richmond Division of the U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of Virginia. He is the author of Quest for Justice: From Deputy Sheriff to Federal Judge . . . and the Lessons Learned Along the Way (2007). This lecture is cosponsored with the Historical Society of the United States District Court for the Eastern District of Virginia.

On december 9, 2010, John Peters delivered the banner lecture "Richmond's Hollywood Cemetery" One of America's great rural cemeteries, overlooking the falls of the James River, Hollywood provides a final resting place for Richmond's—indeed, Virginia's—political, business, and creative leaders, as well as 18,000 Confederate dead. Since before the Civil War, the elaborate ironwork, stone monuments, mausoleums, and natural setting have memorialized the varied lives of the individuals who have populated Virginia's capital city. In this lecture based on his new book, Richmond's Hollywood Cemetery, author and photographer John Peters brings these stories to life once more. (Introduction by Paul A. Young Richmond Outkasts hails from Richmond Va., and compromises of members ChiChi the Kid, Jay Dash, Heirborne, Jwrek, Jaesen K, and the departed Mikezie. Since their formation in 2009, the super group has won several awards and gained media attention from hip-hop outlets such as World Star Hip-Hop and local Richmond radio station 106.5 The Beat. Part of the Richmond independent record label, Hollywood Cemetery, Young Richmond Outkasts has opened for national acts such as Lil Wayne and D12 and established themselves locally with their popular “Clash” parties. Jay Dash and Heirborne were childhood friends and started making music as part of a different hip-hop group before Young Richmond Outkasts. After ChiChi the Kid won Protégé Magazine's 1st annual showcase, he decided that he wanted to share his local publicity with his close friends and artists he collaborated with frequently and jump started the Young Richmond Outkasts. When Mikezie was killed in his recording studio on Christmas Eve shortly after the formation of the rap collective, the group grieved and found new focus which reinforced their determination to make it as successful hip-hop artists.
