Long-time Director of Fallingwater Lynda S. Waggoner joins Tim to discuss the lasting impact Frank Lloyd Wright's masterpiece at Bear Run has had on how the nation continues to perceive house and home. This episode was originally released April 30, 2018. https://traffic.libsyn.com/secure/shapingopinion/Encore_-_Fallingwater.mp3 Frank Lloyd Wright was born right after the American Civil War in Wisconsin. He started his career in 1887 and was a well-known architect well into the 20th Century. He was the originator of the organic approach to modern architectural design and construction. By 1934, however, many considered him past his prime. He was in his late 60s, in his third marriage, and there wasn't in as much demand for new commissions. The Kaufmann family owned a highly successful department store company in Pittsburgh, and they had a weekend retreat at Bear Run about 90 miles away where the family enjoyed the beauty of nature. One of the key features of the property were the Bear Run water falls. In 1934, the Kaufmann's and Frank Lloyd Wright came together to create an architectural masterpiece that continues to remind us of what a house and a home can be. Waggoner Lynda S. Waggoner, former Vice President of Western Pennsylvania Conservancy and Director of Fallingwater, was affiliated with the Frank Lloyd Wright masterwork since first serving as a tour guide during her high school days. She now is widely regarded as one of the nation's foremost authorities on Fallingwater. “Lynda Waggoner understands Fallingwater in a way that few others alive do…because she is a direct link to the Kaufmanns and an indirect link to Wright,” wrote American Institute of Architects member Robert Bailey in a review of Waggoner's book, “Fallingwater: Frank Lloyd Wright's Romance with Nature.” Those teenage days at Fallingwater inspired her to study architecture at the University of Kentucky and art history at the University of Pittsburgh, where she earned dual degrees in art history and anthropology with summa cum laude honors. Her first professional position was as curator of the Museum Without Walls, originally an outreach program of the Baltimore Museum of Art after which she was named curator of the Jay C. Leff Collection of non Western art. In 1980 she became the first executive director of Touchstone Center for Crafts, now a nationally recognized crafts school. A native of nearby Farmington, Waggoner returned to Fallingwater in 1985 as a curatorial consultant and became full-time curator in 1986. A year later, she was named site administrator in addition to her curator's role. She was named director in 1996. Waggoner is past president of the Frank Lloyd Wright Building Conservancy, past Vice President of the Greater Pittsburgh Museum Council, past chairman of the Laurel Highlands Visitors Bureau, and past vice president of the Pennsylvania Federation of Museums. She currently serves on the Board of the Frank Lloyd Wright Building Conservancy and the Community Foundation of Fayette County and the Advisory Board of Preservation Pennsylvania. In 2007 she received the “Wright Spirit Award” from the Frank Lloyd Wright Building Conservancy for her service in the preservation of Wright buildings. In 2004 she was awarded the American Institute of Architects Gold Medal by the Pittsburgh Chapter and in 1997, she was named the Distinguished Alumna Lecturer for the University of Pittsburgh's Frick Fine Arts School of Art History and Architectural Studies. Jeanne Berdik and Anne Crawford, Co-Directors of The Pittsburgh Chapter of the ARCS Foundation stop by TechVibe Radio to tell you how the organization sustains the best emerging scientists, by providing financial support to the most promising graduate students at Carnegie Mellon University and the University of Pittsburgh.  Since the chapter's founding in 2003, it has grown from a dedicated core of women, supporting a single scholar, to a vital group of nearly 120 members.  It has provided three-year awards to 157 scholars. The aggregate of paid or pledged awards through 2023 totals over $2.2 Million, which includes $75,000 to be paid through the recently established CMU endowments. As a chapter, however, ARCS believes that its mission goes beyond mere check-writing.  Members also believe that advancing science in America requires us to support our scholars with more than just funding.  A key emphasis of its initial membership was to introduce the scholars to opportunities in the Pittsburgh region and encouraging these brilliant young scientists to seek their fortune here (as our forebears did with such great success).

Kyshira Moffett is an award-winning serial entrepreneur, brand strategist, author and host of the Brand Your Power Podcast who specializes in helping ambitious women entrepreneurs package their expertise, brand their influence, and monetize their online presence. I can’t wait for you to hear this interview, because there were a couple of things that Kyshira said about marketing and money mindset that were SO GOOD they just gave me chills twice - once when she said them, and then again while I was producing this episode! I totally resonated with Kyshira’s story because like me, she grew her side hustle to six figures before quitting her day job - and she’s all about focusing on organic marketing strategies - which are marketing strategies that cost you time instead of money - and as you’ll hear from Kyshira, the return on your time investment is well worth it. This episode is basically a mini-course on how marketing works from someone who’s not  an expert in organic marketing, but an expert in how to sell high-ticket offers, and the branding and positioning behind it. So grab a pen and paper, you’re gonna wanna take notes on this one! Kyshira and I talk about: Her journey to becoming a business coach specializing in organic marketing strategies. Exactly how she grew her side hustle to six figure business before she quit her full time job. Why organic marketing strategies are the best place to focus when you’re first starting out. Some of the biggest mindset issues that hold her clients back. The beginning steps to take when you’re getting started with organic marketing. Behind the scenes of Kyshira’s business + what a typical day looks like for her. Why investing in yourself and your mindset is one of the most important investments you can make in your business. Her best advice for you if you’re struggling to get traction in your side hustle. The one belief Kyshira had to change about herself to get where she is today. My favorite quotes from Kyshira: “I care a lot about curating the right experiences with the right people, working with the right clients. I'm really big on energy and alignment and things like that. I found organic marketing brings the right people to me.” “You're given these talents, you have your own unique touch that just no one else has.” “The people with the most likes don’t always end up with the most money.” “You have to direct people. You have to say, “Click this link, go do this, go sign up, go book.” People underestimate the power that those two or three little words have, but you have to instruct your audience!” “My business is not going to run me. I am not going to be abused by my business. I am going to take the time that I need.” “When you start to recognize that you're worth spending the money, you recognize that you're worth receiving the money.” Resources mentioned in this episode: www.thepowercollective.co/resources https://www.thepowercollective.co/ https://www.kyshira.com/book Bio: Kyshira S. Pittsburgh’s drinking culture is a story of its people: vibrant, hardworking and innovative. During Prohibition, the Hill District became a center of jazz, speakeasies and creative cocktails. In the following decades, a group of Cuban bartenders brought the nightlife of Havana to a robust café culture along Diamond Street. Disco clubs gripped the city in the 1970s, and a music-centered nightlife began to grow in Oakland with such clubs as the Electric Banana. Today, pioneering mixologists are forging a new and exciting bar revival in the South Side and throughout the city. Cody McDevitt is an award-winning journalist who works full time for the Somerset Daily American. His work has appeared in the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette, Table Magazine and Pittsburgh Quarterly. Sean Enright is one of the founding fathers of the craft cocktail movement in Pittsburgh. He has managed many of Pittsburgh’s most prestigious restaurants and helped found the Pittsburgh Chapter of the United States Bartenders’ Guild. Sean has also been active in the Pittsburgh art community, where he produced a literary art magazine called yawp.

This is the first book ever devoted exclusively to Chuck Noll and it is long overdue.  You will learn much about this man who was rated the No.5 coach of all time in a poll taken in 2013. Jim O’Brien has interviewed Noll many times through the years and, most recently, he has interviewed some of the great players from those teams of the ‘70s and ‘80s who shed some interesting light on their coach.  You also catch up on what’s become of those great players from the Steelers when they were the Team of the Decade.  Jim O’Brien is proud to be the only Pittsburgher ever named to the U.S. Basketball Writers Hall of Fame. He was honored at the NCAA Final Four Basketball Tournament in New Orleans in April of 2003. O’Brien has also won the Bob Prince Award for his contributions to journalism, the Vectors’ David L. Lawrence Award for promoting Pittsburgh through his books, and was inducted into the Western Chapter of the Pennsylvania Sports Hall of Fame.
